Resort cabin gets second life as historic structure Patrick T. King CONTRIBUTOR
The public is invited to join the McHenry County Historical Society for the plaquing of a unique structure: the restored Cabin No. 8 at Pink Harrison’s Resort on the shores of Pistakee Bay. Chicago in the 1920s was a rapidly expanding, heavily congested, noisy and smelly place – especially during the hot Midwest summers. Just two hours north by train, there was a place to escape the busy city, a region of pristine beauty, fresh air, swimming and fishing, known as, the ChainO-Lakes. It was here Anton and Mary Immekus bought a home which they, along with their five children, enjoyed every summer. Eventually their daughter, Christine, married Frank (Pink) HarriSon and together they bought the parents’ Pistakee Bay summer home. In 1932 they purchased a parcel across the street, which came with all important water rights. It was a time of the Great Depression, so more than enough good affordable help was available and construction began immediately on the one- and two-bedroom cabins. One year later Frank and Christine began to rent their new cabins and Pink Harrison’s Resort opened. There were hundreds of fishing cabins to rent along
the Chain-O-Lakes, but few came equipped with such amenities as a sink with running water, linoleum flooring, a gas stove, electric lights, a comfortable bed, and a separate men’s and women’s bath house with flush toilets. There was even linen-service, which consisted of one fresh towel and washcloth per day and fresh sheets once a week. There were fine flat bottom boats to rent, or one could fish off the pier. This parcel was referred to as “The Cabin Lot” and eventually consisted of 13 cabins and a bath house. These cabins were numbered according to their sequence of construction. In December of 1933 Prohibition ended, it was now time to convert the home to a restaurant, the garage into a bar and build a dance hall. All, but the dance hall, are still standing today – directly across the street. As time went on, Pink and Christine purchased one parcel after another until they had nearly 5 acres. In the 1940s they moved the dance hall closer to the water’s edge, made it a dining room, built a new kitchen and a tavern, with a 28-foot bar. By the 1950s, the resort – often referred to as “The Playground of Pistakee Bay” – consisted of 25 buildings, dozens of rental boats, nearly 300 feet

of pier, boat slips, and marine gasoline service. All run with the help of their sons, Herbert and Thomas, and eventually their wives, Paula and Marilyn. Pink died in 1953, followed by Christine in 1957. Bert went on to become a real
estate appraiser. Tom took over the resort, along with the name Pink, or Pinky. Tom, Marylin, and their six children, all pitched in to run the family resort. Tom passed away in July

Martin graduates from Northwestern University Center for Public Safety The Fox Lake Police Department is pleased to announce the recent graduation of Commander Joseph Joseph Martin Martin from the School of Police Staff and Command (SPSC) at Northwestern University. Commander Joseph Martin has successfully completed the ten week Staff and Command program hosted by the Lincolnshire Police Department in Lincolnshire, Illinois, from January 10 March 25, 2022. This program, which was implemented by the Center for Public Safety in 1983, has graduated over 25,000 students both nationally and internationally. Commander Martin was a student in SPSC Class #516 which accommodated a total of 37 students for the ten week period. The School of Police Staff and Command provides upper-level college instruction in a total of twenty-seven core blocks of instruction and additional optional blocks during each session. The major topics of study include: Leadership, Human Resources, Employee Relations,
Organizational Behavior, Applied Statistics, Planning and Policy Development, Budgeting and Resource Allocation. Each student is academically challenged through written exams, projects, presentations and quizzes in addition to a staff study paper that are all required parts of the curriculum. Upon successful completion, students may be awarded a total of 6 units of undergraduate credit from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The Center for Public Safety was established at Northwestern University in 1936 with the specific goal of expanding university-based education and training for the Law Enforcement Community. Since its inception, the Center has broadened its original objective and now provides a variety of courses and programs in the area of Police Training, Management Training, and Executive Development. The Fox Lake Police Department anticipates a variety of benefits from Commander Joseph Martin’s attendance at this program. Many of the program’s graduates do go on to achieve a variety of leadership positions within their respective agencies.

Women’s Health Organization, more restrictive laws have automatically taken effect through so-called “trigger laws” in some of Illinois’ neighboring states, including Missouri, Wisconsin and Kentucky. That has led many to anticipate that Illinois could see a large influx of residents from those states coming to Illinois for abortion services. During a June 30 interview with Capitol News Illinois, Pritzker suggested one response might be to expand segments of the state’s health care workforce to take on greater demand. “Again, this is about securing access, making sure we have capacity to handle the needs of people to get procedures,” he said. “We need hospital personnel, health care personnel. Other states, for example, allow certain kinds of professionals to perform these procedures that Illinois doesn’t allow. So we’re going to look at expanding who can do the procedures.” During that interview, Pritzker also said the state would not consider providing aid for out-of-state travel to Illinois for abortions.

Gov. JB Pritzker and top Democratic leaders in the Illinois General Assembly said July 5 that while they still plan to call a special session this year to strengthen abortion rights, they expect to take the “remainder of the summer” to craft policies before lawmakers return to the Capitol. Pritzker first announced his plan for a special session on June 24, the same day the U.S. Supreme Court released a decision overturning Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 case that legalized abortion nationwide. While the governor said at the time he would call the special session with support from Senate President Don Harmon, D-Oak Park, and House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, D-Hillside, he did not set a specific date for lawmakers to return. He said only he would call the session “in the coming weeks.” In a joint statement July 5, the three leaders indicated the return to Springfield could come as late as the fall. “In the coming weeks, as the ripples of the deci-
sion to overturn Roe are felt throughout the nation, we expect to get an acute sense of our needs and how Illinois can play an even more vital role in standing up for reproductive freedom,” the statement read. “We plan to work closely together for the remainder of the summer to assess every possibility of what we can do and convene a special session in the coming months. Illinois already has among the most permissive laws in the country regarding abortion. In 2019, Pritzker signed the sweeping Reproductive Health Act which, among other things, declares access to abortion services a “fundamental right” in Illinois. And in December, he signed a law making it legal to perform an abortion on a minor without notifying the minor’s parents. Illinois also allows public funding of abortion services for people enrolled in the state’s Medicaid program, the result of a 2017 law signed by then-Gov. Bruce Rauner, a Republican. However, as a result of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson

FOID, red flags and restraining orders: How state laws regulate firearm purchases Highland Park shooter was able to buy assault weapon despite previous police run-ins

A mass shooting in Highland Park at a Fourth of July parade prompted questions about how the suspect was able to obtain a gun in a state with some of the strictest gun laws in the nation. Law enforcement officials have said that the Highland Park shooting suspect, Robert Crimo III, 21, legally purchased and possessed the Smith & Wesson M&P 15 that he used in the attack that left at least seven dead and dozens injured. Gun laws in Illinois regulate the purchase and possession of guns and ammunition. In order to legally possess a gun, the owner must have a Firearm Owners Identification Card, or FOID card. Despite the existence of two previous reports regarding apparent suicidal and homicidal tendencies exhibited by Crimo, he obtained a FOID card and was legally allowed to purchase weapons and ammunition. In April 2019, Highland Park police responded to a call that Crimo attempted to
commit suicide with a machete one week prior. The report also stated that it was handled by “mental health professionals.” In September 2019, police returned to the home in response to a report that Crimo was using drugs, was depressed and had threatened to “kill everyone.” Crimo and his mother denied that account. Highland Park police initially confiscated 16 knives and one sword. No one was arrested, and Crimo’s father claimed ownership of the knives, which police later returned to him. At that time, Highland Park police completed a “Clear and Present Danger” form. The form states that clear and present danger reporting shall be used by Illinois State Police to identify individuals who, if granted access to a firearm or ammunition, pose an actual, imminent threat of substantial bodily harm to themselves or others. The Illinois State Police Firearms Services Bureau, the administrator of the FOID card program, determines
whether the subject of the clear and present danger report possesses a FOID card or has a pending application. At the time, Crimo had neither. But three months after the September 2019 visit from Highland Park Police, Crimo did apply for a FOID card. Because at that time he was still under the age of 21, he needed a sponsor for approval. His father signed the application, state police have said. After Crimo submitted his application, a background check would be initiated to determine whether there were any circumstances that prohibited him from gun ownership. Illinois law allows state police to deny an application for a FOID card, or to revoke or seize a FOID card, if they find that the current or prospective cardholder is subject to any of the following disqualifications: • Is under 21 years of age and has been convicted of a misdemeanor or found to be a delinquent; • Has been convicted of a felony under the laws of Illinois or any other jurisdiction;
• Is addicted to narcotics; • Has been a patient of a mental health facility within the past five years; • Is mentally or developmentally disabled; • Has been involuntarily committed to a mental health facility; • Intentionally made a false statement on the FOID card application; • Has been convicted within the past five years of battery, assault, aggravated assault, or violation of a protective order in which a firearm was used or possessed; • Has been convicted of domestic battery or aggravated domestic battery. If Crimo would have had a FOID card or had a pending application at the time Highland Park police filed the clear and present danger form, analysts would have had to determine if there was a preponderance of evidence—a burden of proof that is met when it is determined that there is a greater than 50 percent chance the claim is true—to issue a clear and present danger determination.
Crimo had no previous criminal convictions on his adult record. His only conviction was for possession of tobacco by a minor when he was 16 years old. Under Illinois law, juvenile convictions are sealed. Despite the two calls to Highland Park police including the suicide attempt and the threat of violence, Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly said there was no reason for Illinois State Police not to issue the FOID card. State police have said there was no report from a mental hospital or provider that would have triggered a prohibitor. And even though an unidentified resident of the family home claimed they were afraid to return to the home after the September 2019 call to the Highland Park Police, there was no order of protection. Illinois also has a “red flag” law, officially the Firearm Restraining Order Act, which is usually pursued in circuit court in response to various actions, including brandishing of a firearm, threatened use of a firearm, and violation of an
order of protection, among others. While existing prohibitions on firearm possession are determined by an individual’s prior criminal or mental health history, firearm restraining orders are different because they are an immediate but temporary action. Crimo’s FOID card application was one of more than 23,977 received by the Firearm Services Bureau in December 2019, and one of 309,176 received throughout the year. It was approved in January the following year. In addition to the FOID background check, Crimo would have been subject to additional background checks through the federal National Instant Criminal Background Check System when buying firearms. Crimo passed checks on June 9, 2020, July 18, 2020, July 31, 2020 and Sept. 20, 2021. Police said Crimo has confessed to the shooting. He has been charged with seven counts of first-degree murder. He remains in jail with no bond pending trial.

Man arrested on 25 felony charges On July 1, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with Kane County Sheriff’s Office, arrested Andreas Rendas, 21, of Elgin, for Manufacture and Delivery of a Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Unlawful Possession of Cannabis.
Investigators from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Narcotics Task Force and Kane County Sheriff’s Special Operations Group conducted a joint operation involving illegal narcotics being purchased via social media. Investigators were able to purchase illegal narcotics from Rendas and execute a search warrant at his residence. At the time of the investigation, Rendas was

In March 2022, Lake County Sheriff’s detectives received information from the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force that child pornography was being

Sheriff’s detectives reviewed the case with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the following charges against Cloe were approved: Possession of Child Pornography – three counts (Class 2 Felony). Cloe was placed into the custody of the Lake County Jail. A bond hearing was held, and Cloe’s bond was set at $250,000. On July 8, Cloe posted the required $25,000 (10 percent) of the bond and he was released from custody. Cloe’s next court date is July 28.

Bicyclist dies following crash
On July 10, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the area of Saint Marys Road and Terre Drive, Unincorporated Libertyville, for a vehicle versus bicyclist crash with injuries. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found the bicyclist, a 64-year-old woman of Green Oaks, with significant injuries. Preliminary investigation shows a 2005 Toyota 4-Runner, driven by an 81-year-old man of Libertyville, was traveling southbound on Saint Marys Road, approaching Terre Drive. The bicyclist then crossed Saint Marys Road from the west side of Terre Drive and rode directly in the path of the southbound Toyota. The driver of the Toyota was unable to stop in time and struck the bicyclist. The bicyclist was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with critical injuries and passed away hours later. The driver of the Toyota was not injured. The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
