Outdoor theater ready for star-studded summer Property upgrades, new offerings add to appeal of movie nights this season
Nothing screams summer like taking in a movie on a giant screen under the stars. And at the McHenry Outdoor Theater — which launched its open-seven-days-a-week season with “Top Gun: Maverick” over Memorial Day weekend — the experience just keeps getting better. Along with making numerous improvements to the grounds and concession area, theater owner Scott Dehn invested about $40,000 this spring on refurbishing the six-story-high, 100-foot-wide screen at the southeast corner of Chapel Hill and Lincoln roads. Another $10,000 went into new lighting and lenses for the digital projector. And the result? It’s a movie-lover’s dream. “It’s gorgeous,” Dehn said. “I never thought we would have a clearer, brighter picture. But we do. It’s beautiful.” And it’s just in time for the return of a stellar crop of first-run features after a pandemic-prompted dearth of new films over the last couple of years. First-run blockbusters scheduled for the Outdoor this summer include “Jurassic World Dominion,” “Minions: The Rise of Gru” and “DC League of Super-Pets,” to name a few. Adding to the experience for adults will be the addition of the Skyline Tap and Gaming area in the conces-
sion building’s north side. Beer and wine will be available for purchase until intermission. Those at the wheel on entering the grounds will receive a hand stamp indicating they are the designated driver for the night, and will not be served, Dehn said. “We had many meetings with the Lakemoor village administrator to build in safety standards before obtaining the liquor license,” Dehn said. “All servers will be Basset-trained and certified.” Another change for visitors to enjoy is the addition of a small merchandise shop featuring T-shirts, sweatshirts, blankets, Frisbees, hats and can koozies, with prices ranging from $6 for a koozie to $45 for a sweatshirt. Those looking to view the film from the lap of luxury can rent an inflatable lounger for $7, with a $10 deposit. New concession items have been added as well, including chicken sandwiches and soft serve ice cream, along with cappuccino and hot chocolate for those brisk summer nights. Children and adults will appreciate new movie-themed artwork destined for the area under the screen as well as around the projector and concession buildings. Indeed, special surprises are in store all summer long.
“Any time we’re showing an animated or family-friendly movie, we’ll have a bounce house on the grounds as well as face painting,” Dehn said. “We’re also scheduling some bands to come out and play in the evenings before the movies start, and looking into doing more virtual concerts like
we did with Bon Jovi last summer.” “It’s going to be a great season,” he continued. “The atmosphere here is kind of like a big block party where there also happen to be movies playing. Plus, it’s generational. You have grandpa and grandma with the grandkids — and they’ve all
grown up here. There’s not many places where you can say that anymore.” The McHenry Outdoor opened as the Sky-line Drive-In in July 1951. The property, including an additional 9 acres Dehn purchased to the east of the parking area, was annexed to Lakemoor in 2020.
Admission this season is $12 per adult, $6 for military and seniors as well as children ages 3 to 11, and free for those younger than 3. A $12-per-carload special began May 31 and continues each Tuesday night thereafter. Season passes also are available. For details, visit goldenagecinemas.com.

Illinois rejoins federal Title X family planning program Action comes after Biden reverses Trump administration’s ‘gag rule’
Bison safely captured from Lakewood Forest Preserve A 1,300-pound bison that escaped from a Wauconda farm late last year was safely and humanely removed last week from Lakewood Forest Preserve in Wauconda. Officials believe it settled at Lakewood in early April. For several days, Lake County Forest Preserve officials worked with a professional livestock specialist from Illinois to capture the bison. “We are thankful the animal has been removed from the forest preserve safely before Memorial Day weekend when attendance at preserves
increases,” said Mike Tully, chief operations officer for the Lake County Forest Preserves. “The safety of our users and the animal has been our No. 1 priority throughout this process. Bison are considered domestic livestock in Illinois, therefore roaming free in a public forest preserve is not an appropriate place for it to call home.” On Friday, May 20, Matt Noble, owner of Loose Cattle Caught, was brought in to assist in humanely capturing the bison. He utilized a crew of specialists, a drone, horse and
dog in attempt to locate the bison. She was located and Noble lightly tranquilized the animal. The tranquilizer did not put her in danger or make her fall to the ground. Its purpose was to slow her down. The bison slowly made its way to the barn for food and Noble was able to close the door. He backed his trailer into the barn and was able to relocate the bison to his compound where the animal is healthy and under observation, Tully said. Noble is in the process of contacting the owner of the bison.

Lake County, Pace Suburban Bus and the Lake County Coordinated Transportation Services Committee (LCCTSC) recently came together with members of the community to celebrate the launch of Ride Lake County, a borderless, countywide paratransit service that provides transportation to anywhere in Lake County for seniors ages 60+ and people with disabilities. The ceremony recognized more than 15 years of steadfast work by various communities, townships, transit partners and community groups to make this service a reality. Previously, there was no cohesive paratransit system in Lake County. Now, residents in need of paratransit services have one number to call, 1-800-201-6446, to enable them to travel around Lake County. Lake County Board Chair Sandy Hart, Division of Transportation Director Shane Schneider, Pace Chairman Rich Kwasneski, Pace Director representing Lake County Lindo Soto, and LCCTSC Chair Kathleen O’Connor shared about how much work community partners have put in over the years to achieve this day and about all the Lake County residents this service will help. “Ride Lake County will allow seniors and those with disabilities the ability to travel to where they need to go across the county and in some cases, beyond,” said Lake County Board Chair Sandy Hart. “This borderless, seamless transportation system will enable people to get to where they need to go for work, shopping, doctor’s appointments, or any other location.” A ribbon cutting introduced one of the many Pace vehicles now part of the Ride Lake County fleet. At the end of the ceremony, attendees were invited to take a tour of the vehicle. “In addition to celebrating the launch of Ride Lake County and a new, accessible vehicle for the service, Pace is pleased to present an additional investment of $200,000 on top of a 15% increase in Pace’s share of Ride Lake County funding this year,” said Pace Chairman Rick Kwasneski. “We have no doubt that these funds will positively impact residents of Lake County and we look forward to continued collaboration on improving mobility and access for those we serve.” As a reservation based program, Ride Lake County vehicles don’t travel in a fixed route each day. Instead, riders schedule their trips in advance and the vehicles provide curb-to-curb service from the rider’s desired pickup and drop-off destinations. Before scheduling their first ride, residents must register through Pace by calling their call center at 1-800-201-6446. Residents can register as either a senior ages 60+ or as an individual with a disability. Riders can schedule a trip any day of the week from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. with the exception of certain holidays. Riders can reserve a trip as far as seven days in advance or as little as two hours in advance. Ride Lake County is sponsored by Lake County and Pace Suburban Bus. the Constitution and therefore cannot become the basis for a right to an abortion, which also is not mentioned in the Constitution. “The slippery slope that will eradicate reproductive choice has already begun,” he said. “First, it’s restricting abortion. Then it will control access to contraceptives.” That was a reference to a 1965 Supreme Court case, Griswold v. Connecticut, in which the court struck down a state law that made it a crime for any person to use a drug or instrument to prevent conception. Then-Justice William O. Douglas wrote in that opinion that the Bill of Rights, when read as a whole, creates “penumbras,” or zones of other rights, including a right to privacy. Others, however, have argued that reversing Roe v. Wade would only allow states to decide their own policies on abortion. In 2019, anticipating the possibility that Roe v. Wade might one day be overturned, Illinois lawmakers passed the Reproductive Health Act which, among other things, declares access to reproductive health care, including abortion services, a fundamental right under Illinois law.

Pritzker also said that even though the Biden administration has lifted the so-called gag rule, he also believes women’s access to reproductive health care and many other rights are in danger due to a soon-to-be released U.S. Supreme Court decision that could overturn the landmark 1973 decision Roe vs. Wade, which legalized abortion nationwide. That’s based on a recently leaked draft opinion in the case in which Justice Samuel Alito, supposedly writing for the majority, argues that the right to privacy, which was the basis behind Roe vs. Wade, is not expressly mentioned in

Illinois has resumed participation in the federal Title X family planning program after refusing to take part for the past three years in protest over a Trump administration policy regarding abortion services. Gov. JB Pritzker recently announced that the state has been awarded $5.4 million in federal funding for the upcoming fiscal year and will soon distribute $11.2 million in grants to agencies that operate 98 family planning clinics throughout the state. At issue has been the Trump-era policy, recently reversed by the Biden administration, that prohibited recipients of those grant funds from counseling patients about abortion options or referring them to abortion providers. “Now that the Biden administration has reversed Trump’s gag rule, I’m proud to announce that we have rejoined the federal title 10 program and we’re putting record funding toward our Illinois family planning program,” Pritzker said at a news conference. Prior to the Trump administration’s rule, which took effect in 2019, the Illinois Department of Public Health re-
ceived about $4 million a year through the program. Pritzker announced in August 2019, shortly after the policy took effect, that IDPH would no longer participate in the program while a number of other family planning service providers, including Planned Parenthood of Illinois and Aunt Martha’s Health and Wellness, said they would not comply with the new requirements. For the rest of that fiscal year, IDPH used General Revenue Fund money to fill in what was previously paid for by the federal government. The following year, the agency expanded the program with $5.8 million to fund Planned Parenthood, which had previously gotten its Title X money on its own, and other providers that weren’t previously part of the state’s Title X program. For the upcoming fiscal year, which begins July 1, Illinois reapplied for the federal money and was awarded $5.4 million while the state continues to fund the program with $5.8 million in state funds, bringing the total to $11.2 million. Trial ends with guilty verdicts On May 25, a bench trial concluded in the Lake County Courthouse with “guilty” verdicts on all counts. Andres Leyva, 31, was convicted of one count of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Assault, a Class X felony, and of one count of Crim- Andres Leyva inal Sexual Assault, a Class 1 felony. Leyva was first charged with both counts in September 2020, after the Lake County Sheriff’s Department responded to and investigated a report of a victim who had been sexually assaulted. “Our office dedicated significant litigation resources to this important trial after an excellent investigation by the Sheriff’s Office. I am proud of our trial team’s work in securing justice for the survivor. Our outstanding victim-support professionals who have been working with the survivor since this attack in 2020, will continue to support her” said State’s Attorney, Eric Rinehart. The bench trial began on May 23, lasting three days. Presiding Judge Patricia Fix heard from five state witness-
es, including medical experts. They explained how the victim’s testimony of the assault aligned with the injuries and evidence collected from the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner’s (SANE) examination. The defendant made the choice to testify on Wednesday morning. During the cross-examination conducted by Assistant State’s Attorney, John Brown, Leyva admitted that the testimony he gave on the stand was different than the statement he gave to detectives when he was originally questioned in September 2020. Leyva was held on a $300,000 bond in the Lake County Jail from the time of his arrest until the trial. After the verdict, Judge Fix revoked the ability to post bond. A pre-sentence investigation will be conducted prior to the next hearing on July 12. Under a new law, the SAFE-T Act, going into effect on January 1, 2023, defendants charged with criminal sexual assault (and other violent cases) will not be granted bond before trial if a judge orders them detained. Because Leyva was convicted of all charges, he will face a mandatory prison sentence of 10 to 45 years to be served at 85%.
Volo crash under investigation
On May 26, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 32200 block of Route 12, Volo, for a traffic crash with injuries. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located two vehicles with heavy damage. Preliminary investigation shows a 2011 Honda SUV, driven by an 84-year-old woman of Chicago, was exiting a driveway on the east side of Route 12 and was attempting to turn left onto so uthbound Route 12. As she made the turn, the rear of the Honda did not clear the northbound lanes of traffic. A 2004 Ford pickup, driven by a 19-year-old man of Volo, was traveling northbound on Route 12. The front of the Ford struck the rear driver’s side of the Honda. The driver of the Honda was transported to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry with serious injuries. A front seat passenger in the Honda, a 79-year-old woman of Chicago, was transported to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry with critical injuries and she was subsequently flown via medical helicopter to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where she remains with critical injuries. The driver of the Ford was uninjured. The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.

McHenry High School distributes 277 saplings for Tree-Plenish campaign McHenry High School students and volunteers distributed 277 tree saplings this spring through the first Tree-Plenish campaign led by the school’s Environmental Club and Gardening Club. The 277 trees represent saplings purchased through Tree-Plenish plus those donated through Friends of the Fox. Saplings were handed out and planted by students on April 30. Teams of volunteers went out to deliver the trees, and in many cases, plant them. Volunteers included student members from various clubs as well as community members.
“I’m very happy with how it all turned out,” said Kaley Freund, science instructor and advisor for the Environmental Club. The project is a joint effort between the high school’s Environmental Club and Gardening Club to replace the paper used by the school in a given year. Saplings were sold for $5 each. The three types of trees sold are Eastern Redbud, Northern Red Oak and Bald Cypress. The goal was to plant 345 saplings to offset paper usage at school. School officials estimate that paper use is 20,469,972 pages printed or copied since July 20, 2017, which is the equivalent of 1,555 trees.
