Remembering Our Fallen

“Remembering Our Fallen,” a national, traveling, photographic memorial, is scheduled to arrive at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 12, at North School Park in Arlington Heights, where it will remain until Sunday, May 15. The display features both military and family-centered images of thousands of U.S. military personnel who perished in service to the nation between Sept. 11, 2001, and Aug. 30, 2021, during the Global War on Terror. And while many of those depicted are from distant towns, others, like U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. James B. Stack, are from right here. “Remembering Our Fallen” will arrive via escort by members of Rolling Thunder Illinois Chapter 2 and Knights on Bikes May 12. An opening ceremony takes place at noon that day. Opening remarks will come from Arlington Heights Mayor Tom Hayes, retired U.S. Army Col. Wayne Kirkpatrick of Rolling Thunder, and Jean Harris, support coordinator with Northern Illinois Survivor Outreach Service. Those coordinating the
exhibit’s stop in Arlington Heights — chiefly the Northern Illinois District Knights of Columbus and the village’s Veterans Memorial Committee — hope that its presence will stir, educate and comfort. “Memorials like this are so profoundly moving,” said Greg Padovani, a retired U.S. Army major who is chairman of the Arlington Heights Veterans Memorial Committee. “These are the people who make our freedoms possible — anybody who serves, of course — but those who made the ultimate sacrifice, especially.” Both Padovani and Juan Huerta, chairman of the Knights of Columbus Northern Illinois District Organizing Committee, said the exhibit’s inclusion of both formal military and more casual, personal photos makes it particularly moving. It’s a point on which Gold Star father Bob Stack also agrees. Stack is the father of James B. Stack, who died in November 2010 after his unit took hostile arms fire while deployed in Afghanistan. The Arlington Heights husband and father was only 20, and only a month into his first
deployment, when he died. “This gives people an opportunity to realize that those who serve in the military are not from somewhere else. They are the kid from down your street,” Bob Stack said. “They’re the kid who mowed lawns in your neighborhood. I think sometimes that gets lost. Displays like this remind us of that.” Stack and his daughter-inlaw, Katie Stack, said they and other Gold Star families welcome any community event that keeps their loved ones’ memories vibrant. Both Stacks are scheduled to be among the speakers who will address crowds during 5 p.m. evening ceremonies May 13 and 14 — with Katie Stack on May 13 and Robert Stack on May 14. “Realizing that people still care allows me to keep healing,” said Katie Stack, whose daughter Mikayla, now 12, had just turned 1 a week before her father died. “It allows me to keep moving forward, realizing that my husband’s sacrifice was not for nothing.” “Remembering Our Fallen” will include a daily opening prayer and pledge of allegiance at 7 a.m. May 13, 14

Inclusive playground kick-off set for May 13
This year’s 167 is closer to a typical year, said Dr. John Beerbower, assistant division chair for McHenry High School District 156 physical education, health and driver’s education at Upper Campus. Usually, between 120 to 200 students get the training each year. In the nine years McHenry High School has partnered with Northwestern Medicine to provide the training, 1,681 students have been trained to give CPR, handle choking emergencies and use an AED (automatic external defibrillator). “I’m really happy with this year’s number,” Beerbower said. “Our community is safer because of all this training the kids have gotten.” Beerbower said he’s heard from

On April 8, McHenry High School celebrated 167 students who completed the American Heart Association CPR/ AED training, marking a return to prepandemic class size for the school’s emergency medical training. Officials from Northwestern Medicine McHenry joined high school administrators and physical education instructors for the ceremony to honor the students who completed the weeklong training in March. Last year, due to limited in-person education opportunities because of COVID-19, a smaller group of 26 students was able to get the HeartSaver for K-12 Schools training, plus some additional training during summer school.

McHenry High School held a special ceremony on Friday to recognize the 167 students who completed CPR and AED certification training at school. Since first offering the training nine years ago, McHenry High School has trained 1,681 students in the American Heart Association HeartSaver program.
At the April 22 Special Call County Board meeting, the Lake County Board confirmed Chair Sandy Hart’s appointment of Waukegan resident Steve Snarski to fill the District 8 County Board seat left vacant by the resignation of former board member Bill Durkin on April 18. Snarski was sworn into office and began his duties immediately. Snarski is a third generation resident of Waukegan and life-long resident of Lake County. He currently works as a licensed realtor and previously served as an intern for the Lake County Emergency Management Agency while completing his undergraduate degree at Western Illinois University. Illinois law requires the county board chair, with the advice and consent of the county board, to appoint a qualified individual to fill a vacancy on the county board within 60 days. Per state law, the appointee must be of the same political party as the seat’s predecessor. Accordingly, the chair was required to appoint a Democrat. Following Durkin’s resig-

Joe Piscopo is about to have a bit more in common with Bill Murray than SNL alum status, and members of the McHenry American Legion post can’t wait. A Saturday Night Live cast member from 1980 to 1984 who also starred in 1980s films including “Johnny Dangerously,” “Dead Heat,” and “Wise Guys,” Piscopo will perform stand-up comedy and music in two shows May 14 at the Woodstock Opera House. A portion of proceeds will go to American Legion Post 491 to put toward veterans’ assistance programs. “I’m so very, very honored to be invited to Woodstock for this event,” Piscopo said in a recent telephone interview. “I have such an infinite respect for veterans, including my father who served in
the U.S. Army Air Corps in Italy during World War II.” Piscopo now hosts a conservative radio talk show five mornings a week as well as hosting Ramsey Mazda Sundays with Sinatra on Sunday evenings, also broadcast in New York. A talented drummer whose impersonations of Frank Sinatra earned him the accolade “vice chairman of the board” from Ol’ Blue Eyes himself, the fit 70-yearold also still frequently hits the road to perform. Piscopo described his show as a retro style performance along the likes of Sinatra or Sammy Davis Jr. Show times will be 3 and 7 p.m. May 14, with tickets ranging from $40 to $65. “My influence was Sammy and Mr. Sinatra and the great performers of that day, where they worked the stage and you could feel the energy,” Piscopo said. “I really try to sustain that.” Piscopo added that he’s excited about visiting Woodstock, the town 1970s SNL alum Bill Murray catapulted to fame in 1993’s “Groundhog Day.” Not only will Piscopo perform in the building from which Murray famously leapt, he’ll also stay at the Cherry Tree Inn, the Bed and Breakfast where Murray slept. But the scene Piscopo will play on the Woodstock Square gazebo will involve neither groundhogs nor weather predictions. Instead, at 1 p.m. May 14, Piscopo will be inducted into

Antioch man in critical condition after falling into Fox Lake channel On April 29, at approximately 1:35 p.m. Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a channel in the 38500 block of North Lakeside Place, Unincorporated Antioch, for a report of a person in distress in the water. This is a Fox Lake channel. Sheriff’s deputies arrived as the victim, a 73-year-old man of Antioch, was being removed from the water.
Preliminary investigation shows the victim and a friend, a 74-year-old man of Winthrop Harbor, were in a small watercraft, fishing. One of the men got their fishing line tangled in the weeds. The victim attempted to retrieve the line, but fell into the cold water. He went completely under water for one to two minutes. The 74-year-old attempted to hold the victim’s
head above water from the boat. He was assisted by a good Samaritan, a 48-yearold man of Villa Park, who heard the 74-year-old man’s calls for help and jumped into the water to help. The victim was transported via ambulance to Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital in critical condition. Foul play is not suspected at this time.

The Huntley Police Department, Huntley Fire Protection District, and Southeast Emergency Communications (SEECOM) have created a new program to help increase interactions with community members with developmental disabilities and their caregivers. The Sensory-Friendly Accessible First Responder Experience (S.A.F.E. Huntley) was designed in partnership with Options and Advocacy to provide an inclusive environment for members of the community who might not be comfortable at other events that often include large crowds, loud noises and flashing lights. About 1 in 6 (17%) children aged 3–17 years were diagnosed with a developmental disability, as reported by parents, during a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study period of 2009-2017. These included autism, attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder, blindness, and cerebral palsy, among others. About 1 in 44 (3%) children have been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) according to estimates from the CDC Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network. These conditions can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges, as well as unique safety risks which may increase the chance of encounters with police and other First Responders. For instance, according to 2012 data published in Pediatrics, 49% of children with ASD attempt to elope from a safe environment. This rate is nearly four times higher than their unaffected siblings. To ensure the best outcomes, these individuals and their caretakers should be familiar and comfortable with First Responders. “Huntley First Responders do a great job reaching out to the community,” states Huntley Police Social Worker Meghan Mumenthal. “We in the Police Department have policies and regular training for all staff on developmental disorders and many of our officers are on the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), a program that includes specialized training to respond appropriately to incidents such as those involving an individual with
a developmental disability or delay. The creation of S.A.F.E. Huntley is the next step in our goal to provide the best service to everyone in our community.” S.A.F.E Huntley participants will have the opportunity to: • Meet staff from all the participating agencies • Learn about the services we offer • Become more comfortable interacting with First Responders through conversation and role-playing • See First Responder equipment and vehicles in a sensory-friendly environment (no sirens or flashing lights) • Provide feedback on how the participating agencies can better serve this community • Meet G.G., a trained comfort dog Role playing activities can be very beneficial to those with ASD and other developmental delays. “We have found that if people have a chance to get comfortable with us in a relaxed setting, it can be easier for them to work with us in an emergency,” states Huntley Fire Protection District Chief Scott Ravagnie. Information on services such as Premise Alert and Smart911 will be available at the event, which allow individuals to provide information on the special needs of their household to dispatchers that is available in an emergency. “As the 9-1-1 emergency communications center for the Huntley area, our public safety telecommunicators are often the first voice callers will hear in an emergency,” states Jason Kern, Executive Director of SEECOM. “In the event someone needs our services, we want to ensure everyone feels comfortable and is aware of all the resources available to them.” To make the event comfortable for those with developmental disabilities and/ or sensory processing issues, registration will be limited to reduce crowd size, sounds will be minimized (no sirens or loud radios will be utilized), lighting will be dimmed and no flashing or strobe lights will be used. The space will include fidget toys, coloring stations, yoga balls and floor mats for the participants who need those
