Happenings McHenry County Century Ride Sunday
The 2022 McHenry County Century Ride will be held Sunday, May 29. There are routes from 26-100+ miles available for a bike ride through scenic McHenry County. This 2nd Annual event will showcase the scenic and mainly flat roads of McHenry County. The route has distances for every level of rider. Based on the cloverleaf design for routes, riders choose their distance, double up on one loop or tackle all four loops. Enjoy four loops connected through one rest stop (Union, Illinois) for a fantastic day of riding. The ride takes place rain or shine. Staging for the start and end of the ride will take place in Sunset Park, 5200 Miller Road, Lake in the Hills. The rest area, open from 7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
is located in Union at Veteran’s Park. Riders can join in and eat at the post ride pasta bowl station, enjoy drinks, and be social. Post event food will be served from 11 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Bring your bag chair and enjoy the food, friends, and stories. PM&L Theatre presents ‘Old Ringers’ through June 5
Old Ringers, a bawdy sex comedy by Joe Simonelli (author of Men Are Dogs), opened May 20, and runs Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through June 5.
In this hilarious comedy, prolific American playwright Joe Simonelli spins a farcical yarn about five seniors who come up with a creative way to make some extra cash to combat a shrinking economy and their depleted pocketbooks. After receiving an obscene phone call during a coffee get-together, they decide to go into business for themselves by opening a home phone sex service. The only impediment being protagonist Diane’s (Vivian Moller of Lake Geneva) disproving fundamental Christian daughter Amanda (Hilary Schneider of Antioch) whom they must keep it a secret from. The artistic team for Old Ringers is led by Director Guy Finley (Elkhorn) making his directorial debut after many seasons on stage and
behind the scenes at PM&L. Scenic Design is by Mark Audrain (Round Lake) with costume design by Lindsey Badtke (Genoa City). The show is Stage Managed by Casey Audrain (Round Lake), Produced by Randy Margison (Round Lake), with Jim Behr (Zion) serving as Directing Advisor. Old Ringers will run Fridays and Saturdays, May 27, 28, June 3 and 4 at 8 p.m. Sunday matinee performances will be May 29, and June 5 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available online at pmltheatre.com and range from $10 - $20. A Delmark recording artist, an International Blues Challenge semifinalist and a Chicago Blues Hall of Famer. Add to that a Led Zeppelin tribute band playing that group’s finest blues, a Rolling Stones tribute band, an up-andcoming local band gaining a name for its rockin’ blues and, of course, the perennially most cheerful of blues bands around, and you’ve got the lineup for this year’s Blues, Brews & BBQ — though not necessarily in that order. This year marks the 11th annual Blues, Brews & BBQ. Coordinated by McHenry Area Rotary with D.C. Cobb’s-McHenry as premier sponsor, it will take place Friday through Sunday, Aug. 19-21, at Petersen Park, McHenry. “We’ve got something for everyone this year,” said Don Tonyan, co-chairman of the event along with fellow Rotarian Denis Buch. “It’s a mix of high-energy favorites from past years along with some bands that are all-new to our fest.” Kicking things off at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, as they have for each Blues, Brews & BBQ since 2012, will be the always smile-riling members of the John Todd Band. Jimmy Nick — who not only made the International Blues Challenge semi-finals in 2013 and 2016, but also is an Illinois Blues Challenge champion — takes the stage at 8 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, Aug. 20, the music starts at 4 p.m. with Sharon Lewis & Texas Fire. Lewis has performed across Europe and is a regularly featured headliner on the Chicago blues scene. After her band plays, Led Zeppelin tribute band Kashmir takes the stage at 6:30 p.m. Hot Rocks follows at 9 p.m. And, as Hot Rocks pays tribute to the Stones, the audience will be reminded of how Blues pioneers such as Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry and John Lee Hooker heavily influenced

Those attending Sunday will enjoy the rockin’ blues of Delta Rising at 1 p.m. and the Blues Hall of Fame-stature sounds of the Mike Wheeler Band at 3 p.m. While Todd, Nick and Wheeler have played the fest before, Lewis, Kashmir, Hot Rocks and Delta Rising are new to the Blues, Brews & BBQ stage. “We believe both the blues purists and those who enjoy the more rockin’ side of the blues will find reasons to love this year’s fest,” said Diana Mark, lineup chairwoman. “I love it because it’s all for a great cause.” The money raised at the music, food and craft beer fest supports numerous humanitarian and student leadership programs. In fact, the McHenry Area Rotary has provided $63,415 to 15 grant recipients since last fall, with the vast majority of those funds coming from past Blues, Brews & BBQ proceeds. Landon Keefover, a native of Antioch, IL, and member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, is one of nine Warhawks who will compete
in individual events at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships this Thursday-Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, N.C. Keefover will represent the Warhawks in the 110-meter hurdles with his personal record time of 14.37 seconds. He also competed in the hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Championship.

No one facing health concerns should also have to worry about receiving inequitable or substandard care because of their LGBTQ+ status. The HEI evaluates and scores healthcare facilities on detailed criteria falling under four central pillars: 1. Foundational Policies and Training in LGBTQ+ Patient-Centered Care; 2. LGBTQ+ Patient Services and Support; 3. Employee Benefits and Policies; and, 4. Patient and Community Engagement. The exceptional progress reflected in the 2022 HEI includes: • 93% of participants met the HEI’s training requirements, completing more than 200,000 hours of staff training in LGBTQ+ patient-centered care. • 82% of participating facilities earned either the Leader or Top Performer. • 99% of HEI participants documented that they include both “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” in their patient non-discrimination policy. • 99% of HEI participants documented that they include both “sexual orienta-
tion” and “gender identity” in their employment nondiscrimination policy. • 81% of HEI participants offer transgender-inclusive healthcare benefits to their employees, up from 75% in 2019, which was the first year this it was required in order to obtain Leader status. 2020. In honor of Mother’s Day, the McHenry High School girls soccer players collected and packed up boxes of gifts for mothers in homeless and domestic abuse shelters, through a partnership with Two Men and a Truck in Crystal Lake. In the weeks leading up to Mother’s Day, collection boxes were out at both McHenry High School buildings to encourage donations. They collected soaps, shampoo, toothpaste and more. Two Men and a Truck’s program, Movers for Moms, is a nationwide project to donate essential care items, such as soaps, shampoo and more, to shelters each spring.

The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center is announcing their “LGBTQ+ Health Care Equality Leader” designation from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC). The designation was awarded in the 15th anniversary edition of HRC’s Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). A record 906 health care facilities actively participated in the HEI 2022 survey. Of those included in the HEI, 496 earned an “LGBTQ+ Health Care Equality Leader” designation, achieving the coveted top score of 100. Another 251 participants earned the “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Top Performer” designation for a total score of between 8095. The fact that 82% of participating facilities earned either the Leader or Top Performer designations demonstrates that the healthcare facilities that participate in the HEI are going beyond the basics when it comes to adopting policies and practices in LGBTQ+ care. “We are honored to once again be recognized with the highest achievement as a LGBTQ+ Health Care Equality Leader,” said Executive Director, Mark Pfister. “Maintaining inclusive care for Lake County’s LBTGQ+ community is and will always be a core part of our mission. The ZBA is established under the statutory provisions of the County’s Code and focuses on zoning in the unincorporated areas of Lake County. Murder charges filed for shooting, killing 14-year-old Monday, May 16, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed first-degree murder charges against 18-yearold Amireon C. Williams for shooting and killing 14-yearold, Lavon’ta Brown on Sunday, May 15, 2022. Wi l l i a m s was arrested Sunday evening, inside the Waukegan Home Depot Amireon C. Williams shortly after the car he was a passenger in fled the scene and crashed in the parking lot of the store. Williams fled the crash attempting to hide in the store but was taken into custody by Waukegan Police Officers. Williams appeared before the Honorable Judge Theodore Potkonjak this morning and is being held on a $3 million bond. Williams also had an outstanding ar-
rest warrant for Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm from a previous incident in Waukegan. His court appearance was on May 19. The North Chicago Fire Department and the North Chicago Police Department responded on Sunday, around 5:15 p.m., to the 1000 block of Jackson Street in North Chicago for a report of shots fired. When police officers arrived, Brown was critically injured and was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after. Investigators from the North Chicago Police Department and the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force said that Brown was walking with his friend when a car, occupied by four passengers, including Amireon Williams, pulled up next two them. Williams was sitting in the rear seat behind the driver when he rolled down his window and began
firing shots at Brown. Soon after the shots were fired, the driver of the car fled the scene. “This is a senseless and outrageous killing. Our office will seek justice for Lavon’ta, and we have reached out to his family to provide further support. We are also engaging State and local officials as well as our law enforcement partners to pro-actively prevent these tragedies,” said State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart. The investigation into this incident continues. Defendants sentenced in separate felony cases
On May 17, a Lake County Judge sentenced a man to 12 years in prison for a sexual assault he committed in 2018. On May 18, an- Luis Rosales other Lake County Judge sentenced a Zion woman to five years for leaving the scene of a deadly accident.
On March Linda J. Ray 23, 2022, two separate juries convicted Luis Rosales, 49, and Linda J Ray, 47 of class 1 felonies. Rosales was convicted of one count of Criminal Sexual Assault by the use of threat of force and one count of Criminal Sexual Assault in that the victim
was unable to give knowing consent. “We are satisfied that Judge Shanes sentenced this offender toward the top end of the sentencing range. This sentence makes Lake County safer. Violent attacks upon anyone will not tolerated, and we applaud the survivor for her courage,” said State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart. Victim impact statements were read during both sentencing hearings. During the Rosales hearing, Assistant State’s Attorney Lauren Walker read a victim impact statement written by the victim. One of the victim’s family members was present at the hearing. Linda J. Ray, 47, was convicted by a separate jury of one count of Leaving the Scene of an Accident Causing Death in March of 2022. During the Ray hearing, the courtroom was filled with Chad Aiello’s friends
and family. There were five victim impact statements written by Aiello’s parents, daughter, sister and girlfriend. Three were read by Assistant State’s Attorneys Lauren Kalcheim Rothenberg and Scott Hoffert and two by the family members themselves. They all expressed the pain they have felt since losing Aiello and how not having him around has left a “hole” in their hearts. Before Judge Charles Smith gave his decision on Ray’s sentencing, he said we cannot keep tolerating people fleeing scenes after tragic accidents. He said that although the sentence does not bring Aiello back, he hopes the family can get closure after today. State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart praised prosecutors on both cases and said our office will keep fighting for victims by bringing offenders to justice.
