LCDOT holding Cedar Lake Road realignment public hearing May 18 The Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) is hosting a public hearing for the proposed improvement plan for Cedar Lake Road between Nippersink Road and Hart Road in the Village of Round Lake. The hearing will take place on Wednesday, May 18 from 5-7 p.m. at Magee Middle School. The purpose of the meeting is to present the preferred alternative, findings of the environmental studies, and collect public input. The preferred alternative improvement consists of realigning Cedar Lake Road to the west with a new at-grade crossing with the railroad. Improvements to Metra’s Milwaukee District North Round Lake station site, a new bike path and sidewalks are being proposed as well. The meeting will consist of a presentation starting at 5:15 p.m. followed by an opportunity for the public to provide a two-minute statement to a court reporter regarding the project. After the opportunity for public comment, the project team will be available to discuss the project and answer questions.

Newest sheriff’s canines named by Lake County students Sheriff John D. Idelburg and the Lake County Sheriff’s Canine Unit announced the names of the two newest sheriff’s canines. From March 4-25 Lake County youth submitted their suggested names for the new canines. Nearly 400 kids submitted their preferred name for the canines. The names selected for our two newest canines are Canine Axel and Canine Echo. Deerfield High School Sophomore Ethan Jacobs as well
as Vernon Hills Hawthorn Middle School 6th graders Matthew Prigorenko and Carson Alper selected the name Axel. Millburn Elementary School Kindergartener Charlotte Regner selected the name Echo. All four students will be invited to participate in K9 Echo & Axel’s swearing-in ceremony in late-June, following the completion of the initial training. Deputy Tyler Girmscheid was partnered with Canine Echo and Deputy Kevin
Gauer was partnered with Canine Axel. The two deputies and their new canine partners are completing an intense eight-week initial training program at Tops K9 in Grayslake. The training consists of canine psychology, obedience, agility, tracking, scent detection, and more. Sheriff Idleburg said, “We always enjoy getting the youth involved in various aspects of our office and I have to say, the names they submitted were terrific!
Some of the submissions had inspiring meaning behind the names and some of the submissions had us chuckling. We are looking forward to having Ethan, Matthew, Carson, and Charlotte join us at their swearing-in ceremony.” Canines Axel and Echo join their other sheriff’s canine partners Dax, Duke, Danno, Ryker, and Boomer to bring the total number of Lake County Sheriff’s Canines to seven.
About the project LCDOT is currently studying the realignment of Cedar Lake Road in downtown Round Lake. Realigning the road has been discussed since the 1970s as an opportunity for the Village of Round Lake to redevelop its central business district. In 2012, this section of Cedar Lake Road was jurisdictionally transferred to Lake County from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). Since then, Lake County has been working with the Village on the possibility of a realignment project. Currently, the project is in preliminary engineering phase and a preferred alternative detailing the improvements has been established. The public is encouraged to learn more about the project and provide their thoughts on the progress so far at the upcoming public hearing. The meeting is being held at Magee Middle School, 500 N. Cedar Lake Road, Round Lake and will be accessible to individuals with disabilities. Anyone needing special assistance should contact Chuck Gleason, LCDOT Phase I Project Manager at 847-377-7447 at least five days prior to the meeting.

They represent all branches of the military and include Purple Heart recipient Richard Podemski, a Marine who served in Vietnam, and Donald Klisch, who spent 42 years in the Navy and Air Force. Both live in Huntley. “I liked it and I wasn’t about to give it up because I knew at the end of the tunnel there would be a lot of benefits,” said Klisch, 88. “Then they said, ‘You have to get out.’ They wouldn’t let me stay anymore.” Klisch spent 26 years with the Navy, first at Glenview Naval Air Station and later in the reserves. During that time he did electrical work on airplanes, as well as serving a flight engineer, flight attendant and radio man as part of the Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 51 (VR-51). In the Air Force he was assigned to the 928th Civil Engineering Squadron, working on airplanes at O’Hare Field in Chicago. He retired a E-8 Senior Master Sergeant. Gov. JB Pritzker and Illinois Democrats warned of an “end to the constitutional right to privacy” if a leaked U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning the 1973 landmark decision in Roe v. Wade becomes finalized as precedent. “It means women who lose access to the full suite of medical advances that give them choices in how and when they want to start a family are at risk,” Pritzker said at a news conference in Chicago. At the same time, however, the Democrats touted a recent string of Illinois laws aimed at protecting the access to an abortion for Illinoisans and those visiting the state to receive reproductive health care. The news conference was called in response to a May 2 report from Politico that outlined the leaked draft decision that would strike down Roe v. Wade, a decision which has protected abortion rights as constitutional rights for nearly five decades. Justice Samuel Alito wrote in the majority opinion that “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start” and the issue of regulating abortion must be returned to the states. Pritzker said that if the ruling stands as a reversal of 50 years of settled law, the implications on privacy and health care access could be dire. “It’s not just that they’re taking away reproductive rights,” he said. “It’s that this is a slope that they’re headed down that is going to take away all of the rights that were granted as a result of the right to privacy. It’s a constitutional right to privacy, determined by the court 50 years ago and reinforced along the way, and now they’re taking it away.” Advocates said overturning Roe would be devastat- GOP gubernatorial ing for millions who will be candidates respond forced into unwanted pregWhile GOP statements to

Bailey has received endorsements by the Illinois Federation for Right to Life, Illinois Citizens for Life and Illinois Family Action. GOP governor candidate Jesse Sullivan said in a news release under the headline “prayer works” that he is “overjoyed at what could be a generational change in the soul of our country.” He noted that with the Supreme Court decision putting

Delia Ramirez, D-Chicago, said she worries that Black and Latino communities, which are already disproportionately impacted by lack of health care access, will be targeted and criminalized by anti-abortion laws. “I mourn with the young people who may grow up in a country where our laws tell them that they have no autonomy over their bodies,” Ramirez said. Rep. Kelly Cassidy said uprooting the precedent in Roe could affect interpretations of law regarding birth control and marriage equality. “I feel like my life and my family’s life is teetering at the top of a Jenga tower that we’re watching crash in real time,” Cassidy, D-Chicago, said. “My marriage, my children’s relationship with their other mother, my bodily autonomy, is all in the crosshairs.” While Democrats said overturning Roe would mark a “dark day in our nation’s history,” they also credited their party for creating a “forcefield” to guarantee a women’s right to reproductive health care in Illinois. In 2019, Pritzker signed the Reproductive Health Act enshrining in state law the fundamental right to an abortion. In December 2021, he signed a law ending a requirement that doctors must notify parents of a minor seeking an abortion 48 hours prior to the procedure. House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, D-Hillside, criticized Republicans for implying that “this wasn’t a serious matter” when they voted against abortion protections previously. On Tuesday, he said, the GOP was “eerily quiet” amid the major news.

Village of Antioch transfers senior service operations to Antioch Township The Antioch Village Board has voted to transfer operations of all senior service programs to the Antioch Township overnment. Working collaboratively through this new arrangement, the Township and Village will be able to offer more efficient programming and services to the Antioch community. While services will be managed by the Township government, the Senior Center building will still be owned and maintained by the Village of Antioch. Any non-senior services programming will be run by the Village of Antioch Park’s Department. “This joint effort will allow for better services with cost savings,” said Antioch Mayor Scott Gartner. “This is a win for everyone, especially our seniors” Antioch Township has been working on a revised senior program schedule that combines and includes the long-standing programs and activities that have been a staple at the Antioch Senior Center as well as the robust programs, trips, and events Antioch Township has created and grown
throughout the past three years. “One of the top priorities is to ensure our seniors have a safe comfortable place to gather, with the ability to create recreational activities for all,” said Antioch Township Supervisor Tom Shaughnessy. Antioch Senior Center building repairs: The Village of Antioch has temporarily closed the Antioch Senior Center from May 2 to June 6 for needed repairs and upgrades to the building. Throughout the five-week closure, Antioch Township will continue Senior Center events at their 1625 N. Deep Lake Road, Lake Villa address. The Senior Center building is expected to re-open on June 7 with an updated schedule of events and programs that will be run both at the Senior Center and Antioch Township building. Residents with questions, concerns, or looking to volunteer are asked to call Antioch Township Senior Services at 847395-3378.

Take steps to prevent tick-borne diseases
The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center urges residents to take precautions against ticks, which can carry several diseases, including Lyme disease. “Although we are exposed to ticks year-round, they are most active during warmer months,” said Alana Bartolai, Ecological Services Program Coordinator for the Health Department. “Ticks may be small in size, but we still need to protect ourselves, our families, and pets against the diseases they can carry, especially Lyme disease.” Ticks live in and near wooded areas, tall grass and brush. If infected, ticks can transmit diseases including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Southern Tick Associated Rash Illness (STARI), tularemia, and others when they bite humans or animals. “If you experience fever, headache, fatigue, or a rash after a tick bite, please consult your healthcare provider

Planned Parenthood projected that an additional 14,000 women from Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma and Tennessee would likely travel to southern Illinois for abortion care if Roe v. Wade is overturned. “We will fight like hell, not just for the women of Illinois, but for every person in our state and every person across this nation who believes not in limiting civil rights and human rights, but expanding them,” Pritzker said.
