Most of us will have varied memories of the strange times we are having right now in the light of COVID-19 and state orders to stay at home. One Lake Villa youngster will have some good memo-

ries because he had “the best birthday ever” despite not being able to have a party. Griffin Filwett turned 6 on Saturday and friends and family showed up to wish him a happy birthday in a new trend, a car parade. When Griffin’s original party at a gymnastic center had to

be canceled, his mom decided to invite family and friends for a surprise car parade in their Lake Villa subdivision. About 25 cars, including a Lake Villa police officer, and many people walking by came to wish Griffin a happy birthday while still social distancing. There was chalk to write

Sam Knab, a native of Antioch, and graduate of Antioch High School, is a member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater bowling team, which is the first-ever Central Intercollegiate Bowling Conference champion following its performance during the 2019-20 regular season. Knab, a sophomore at UWWhitewater, is majoring in elementary education. Knab is also one of three members of the bowling team to be selected to all-conference by the Central Intercollegiate Bowling Conference (CIBC) for 2019-20, the league’s

inaugural season. The Warhawks captured the title during the CIBC’s inaugural season. Following the cancellation of the CIBC Championship earlier this month, UW-W was awarded the championship based on NCAA RPI ranking, overall record, scoring average and winning percentage against conference opponents. UW-Whitewater finished the 2019-20 season with a 54-47 record, regularly facing the top teams in the nation. The team is 16th in the latest National Tenpin Coaches Association poll and third in the NTCA’s most

Healthcare coverage and workforce Gov. JB Pritzker said April 1 that more than 1,100 former health care professionals and those who practice out of state have responded to his call to renew or apply for licenses in Illinois so they can join the workforce treating COVID-19 patients. He said many of the out-ofstate practitioners are actually Illinois residents who practice in border communities just outside the state. “Right now those numbers are running about half-andhalf, with more applications coming in every day,” he said. “It’s really incredible to watch. The people of this state are truly so deeply genuinely caring.”

November election During his daily news conference March 31, Gov. JB Pritzker addressed questions about voting in the November general election. “I do think that we’re going to have to look at, for the general election, the idea that we may have to move to significant amount or maybe all mail-in ballots or at least giving people the opportunity to do that,” he said. But, he said, that’s a decision that would have to be made by the General Assembly, and it is uncertain when the body will meet to discuss such legislation as an operating budget and other must-pass measures. “We have to find a way to get the Legislature together. That’s going to be a decision that gets made by the legislative leaders, along with our public health professionals, to determine how you get 177 General Assembly members in the similar area and vote on things,” he said.

Prison population The Pritzker administration is continuing to review and commute the sentences of vulnerable inmates and those with nonviolent offenses to mitigate potential spread among prison populations. Sentences for pregnant women or those with babies, retail shoplifters and those incarcerated on narcotics chargers have been commuted. “We had more than 1,000 fewer prisoners in prison today than we had on February 1,” Pritzker said April 2. On March 31, the state announced an outbreak at Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill, with 32 cases reported and more tests pending. Ezike said people who were infected at Stateville were moved into a separate part of the facility, and the number hospitalized from the facility decreased to 16 April 2 from 19 April 1. “Again, here’s another glimmer of hope—three people recovered and were released from the hospital,” she said.

Lake County Sheriff’s reports

On April 1, 2020, members of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Team in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals Service – Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force (USMS-GLRFTF), concluded an investigation which resulted in the apprehension of Gregory Vaughn Jr., 32, of the 1900 block of Fox Point Trail, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Vaughn Jr. had active arrest warrants out of Fort Wayne, IN, for attempt murder, robbery, theft, invasion of property, and interference with the reporting of a crime. The arrest warrants allege on March 2, 2020, Vaughn Jr. entered a residence in Fort Wayne, IN, where his children reside with their mother. Vaughn Jr. stabbed the mother of his children, in front of his children. The following day, Vaughn Jr. returned to the residence and shot an acquaintance of the mother of his children numerous times. Vaughn Jr. fled from the scene and has been avoiding apprehension since. On March 27, 2020, USMS-GLRFTF (Fort Wayne Office) contacted the Lake County Sheriff’s Warrants Team requesting assistance in locating Vaughn Jr., as it

was possible he was residing in the Lake County area. The Lake County Sheriff’s Warrants Team and USMS-GLRFTF developed information Vaughn Jr. was staying at an apartment in the 3100 block of West Grandville Avenue, Waukegan. On April 1, 2020, the arrest warrant was served at the apartment and Vaughn Jr. was taken into custody without incident. Vaughn Jr. remains held in the Lake County Jail on $1,000,000.00 bail. He was due back in court on April 7. Sheriff John Idleburg said, “From our 911 dispatchers, to our correctional officers, to our essential clerical staff, to our deputies on the street I have a tremendous amount of gratitude for all of our sheriff’s employees standing strong during this Coronavirus pandemic and continuing to keep our community safe. To everyone in the community deemed essential who continues to work and provide essential services – thank you! We will get through this together.” All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law

SEDOL paraprofessional charged in battery of seven-year-old student

On February 27, 2020, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office was notified of an incident where a paraprofessional from the Special Education District of Lake County (SEDOL) used excessive force while interacting with a seven-

year-old student. The notification came from SEDOL administration and sheriff’s deputies commenced an investigation into the incident. The investigation showed Justin Cole, 35, of the 2400 block of 82nd Street, Kenosha, WI, was in an intervention office with the sevenyear-old boy. The sevenyear-old pushed Cole and Cole responded by picking up a pillow and struck the seven-year-old in the head, utilizing the pillow as a barrier between the boy’s head and Cole’s hand. This caused the boy to fall to the ground and begin crying. SEDOL administration took immediate action and terminated Cole’s employment. Following the investigation, sheriff’s deputies reviewed the facts and circumstances with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office. The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office drafted an arrest warrant for Cole on one count of battery (class A misdemeanor), which was authorized and signed by a Judge on March 27, 2020. On March 30, 2020, Cole surrendered himself to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. He appeared in court and was released on a $25,000.00 Recognizance Bond pending a return court date of May 14, 2020. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Local entities answering the call for COVID-19 related supplies In response to the urgent need for Personal Protective Equipment to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, Lake County entities are responding with generous donations of supplies. Since late last week, North Chicagobased AbbVie Inc., Lincolnshire-based companies Alight Solutions and Van Vlissingen and Co., and North Chicagobased Rosalind Franklin University have all made generous donations. In total, the donations have included more than 2,000 N-95 masks, more than 40,000 surgical and face masks, more than 600 gowns, 450 lab coats, hundreds of gloves, more than 1,000 shoe covers and booties, 400 sleeve covers and more. Lake County will distribute the supplies to local longterm care facilities, many of which have residents or staff members who have tested positive for COVID-19. “We are grateful for the outpouring of support across Lake County. This

equipment will directly help protect our community’s most vulnerable residents and our healthcare workers who are putting themselves on the front line every day,” said Lake County Board Chair Sandy Hart. “These donations are a testament to Lake County’s spirit, and demonstrate how we are coming together as a community to help one another and fight this dangerous virus.” If you or your business have access to PPEs, please consider making a donation. Update on Spring Grove parks Hatchery Park is closed until further notice. A large tree is being removed near the entrance and the parking lot and driveway repair is much more extensive than originally thought, requiring full closure, possibly through the end of the second week in April. If you like to walk, there is a walking path at Thelen Park at 8516 Winn Road. The path goes around the perimeter of the football and small baseball fields. Leashed dogs are allowed at the park. Due to an executive order by the Governor, playgrounds are now closed. Parks and the

outdoors are still open for jogging, walking, biking, fishing & dog walking but not for gathering of groups, sporting games or to party. We are keeping a close eye on the parks to make sure people are respecting the 6-foot social distancing rule. By following these rules, you can help keep the parks open. Benefits for the needy Gov. JB Pritzker announced new measures benefitting the homeless and people on supplemental nutrition programs March 27. The governor announced the expansion of SNAP, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, benefits. response. It fights Vitamin C for priority within the cell, and you don’t want that. Alcohol basically turns into sugar in your body. If you want to keep your immune system in peak condition, you don’t want to treat your anxiety with alcohol. Q: Any other advice for us as we muddle through the uncertainty of the coming weeks? A: Be more deliberate. In more normal times, people may assume that they’re getting their steps in and that they’re eating well. When we’re stressed we’re more apt to grab for whatever’s closest, to eat the comfort food, drink the cocktail. Especially now, when people aren’t going to work and their gyms are closed, they’re not getting in their regular activities, and they may be more likely to reach for a sugary snack. Sugar releases serotonin. But that short-term high is counter-productive to our immune response.
