A new sponsorship program is filling a pandemic-fueled fund-raising gap while offering benefactors the chance to connect with one of the area’s most visible humanitarian champions: Keeping Families Covered. Called the Changing Table, the program offers sponsorships ranging from $500 to $5,000, with varying perks afforded to those who commit to an annual contribution at the Bronze ($500), Silver ($1,000), Gold ($2,500) or Diamond ($5,000) levels. Already, since the program’s implementation late last year, two diamond, four gold, four silver and four bronze sponsors have stepped up, said Ann Marie Mathis. The mother of seven is CEO and founder of the Waukegan-based nonprofit whose flagship program is providing diapers to families in need. Changing Table sponsors to date include: Diamond ($5,000) - Atturo Tire Corp., and Waukegan Wiilcom, Gurnee. Gold ($2,500) - Busey Bank, Glenview, Equity Creative, Kenosha, Wisconsin Mowery & Schoenfeld, Lincolnshire, and Consumers Cooperative Association (Consumers Credit Union), Gurnee. Silver ($1,000) - Superior Remodeling & Maintenance, Wadsworth, Grand Foundation, Sturtevant, Wisconsin, Plan B Advertising, Chicago

and Joyce Campbell. Bronze ($500) - Great Rooms Designers & Builders Inc., Libertyville, Bob’s Discount Furniture, Manchester, Connecticut, BNI Referrals Express, Gurnee, and Ace Hardware, Round Lake. “These sponsorships help us to keep our shelves stocked so we can provide families with the basics they need to thrive,” Mathis said. “In each of the last two years, our distributions exceeded 1 million diapers, and the need just continues to grow. In 2021, we distributed about 100,000 diapers a month, serving 1,200 families and 1,800 children each month.” The National Diaper Bank Network, of which Keeping Families Covered is a member, estimates one in three U.S. families experiences diaper need. This can negatively affect babies’ health as well as further strain struggling parents, who face difficulty holding down jobs or regularly attending school if they cannot provide an adequate supply of diapers to day-care operators. The Changing Table sponsorship program came to fruition after Keeping Families Covered had to pull off the calendar for the last two years its premier, in-person fundraising event, Bottoms Up for Babies. And though the event is back on the calendar for this fall, the Changing Table offers a way for those supporting the mission of Keeping Families

Covered to maintain not only high recognition at that event, but also a year-round connection. “It’s so important that we maintain community support, especially now,” Mathis said. “Even though we buy in bulk and at a discount, like everyone, we’ve been hit with product and freight price increases.” At the Diamond and Gold sponsorship levels, company logos are featured on the non-profit’s 16-foot trailer or box truck. Logos of top-level sponsors are featured on both. The trailer and truck are highly visible as they travel hundreds of miles each month to Keeping Families Covered mobile diaper pantry sessions in Gurnee, Grayslake, Waukegan, Highwood, Round Lake Park and Kenosha, Wisconsin. All sponsors have their name and logo posted on www.keepingfamiliescovered.org and enjoy social media mentions. Additionally, all receive exposure on a lobby-based TV at the facility’s Waukegan offices and in Keeping Families Covered’s diaper wrapping room, where volunteers package diapers as well as period supplies for distribution. Illinois lawmakers look to address organized retail crime CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

A group of Illinois senators were joined by officials from the Illinois Retail Merchants Association and state attorney general’s office at a recent news conference to outline an effort to combat organized retail crime. House Bill 1091, a collaboration between IRMA and attorney general’s office, defines organized retail crime in law and adds requirements to the information third-party selling marketplaces would be required to collect from their sellers. Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton, D-Western Springs, said the bill defines organized retail

crime as when a person steals merchandise, either from a store or while the merchandise is in transit, with the intent to resell it. It further defines the crime as when an individual “receives, purchases or possesses items for sale or resale knowing or believing the merchandise to be stolen” from a retail establishment, among several other narrow definitions of related criminal acts. Offenses of organized retail crime could be sentenced at various felony that could include restitution. “I believe House Bill 1091 is the appropriate response to reiterate consequences to individuals who threaten local

economic growth and participate in organized retail crime,” Glowiak Hilton said. Third party sellers would be required to verify a user’s identity with a bank account number or other information to prevent stolen goods from being sold online. The selling platform would be required to suspend sellers in violation of the new law. The attorney general’s office would also have the authority to bring action against an entity believed to be engaging in organized retail crime. The attorney general would also be given subpoena authority pertaining to organized retail crime. The bill also provides the AG’s office the ability to prose-

cute through a statewide grand jury. “Make no mistake, these crimes are not random,” Sen. John Curran, R-Downers Grove, said. “They are sophisticated, orchestrated events that exploit gaps in our criminal statutes to help fund gang activity and crime rates.” Sen. Doris Turner, D-Springfield, said organized retail crime is more than just a Chicago issue and that it happens throughout Illinois. Turner said it puts a damper on small business owners who are trying to rebuild the community and economy and that those owners have put in a lot of time, money and resources to do what they enjoy.

“When people are nervous to go to work, scared to go shopping or visit a mall or our small boutique shops in places like downtown Springfield, action needs to be taken to address our community concerns,” Turner said. Monica Zanetti, owner of the Wild Rose Boutique in Springfield, said that as a small business owner who runs her shop alone, she fears smashand-grabs. She said the measure is a comprehensive solution in combating retail theft. Zanetti noted that although she does not experience retail crimes to the extent Chicago stores do, she has had individuals come into her store and take things then go to another store to try and sell what they stole. The measure proposes that if a ring of smash-and-grab thefts happens across multiple counties, prosecutors would have the jurisdiction to consolidate charges against the offender in one county for all the smashand-grab incidents. The bill requires state funds to allow state prosecutors to

investigate and prosecute retail criminal rings. Rob Karr, IRMA President said the necessary funding is about $5 million but those funds would need to be allocated separately in the state’s budget for fiscal year 2023. Karr said the measure addresses organized retail crime from multiple angles and will, if funded, create a “statewide intelligence gathering and sharing platform” that will allow retailers and law enforcement agencies at the local, state and federal level to coordinate in addressing retail theft. At a separate news conference, Gov. JB Pritzker said that he has yet to see the details of the bill but that he is looking forward to reviewing it. The measure is part of a broader package of bills addressing crime being discussed in the General Assembly. Karr noted that IRMA has been in conversation with House Speaker Emanuel ‘Chris’ Welch and other House members regarding public safety bills.

Spring Grove egg hunt scheduled for Saturday The Village of Spring Grove Recreation Department, along with the Village of Richmond and Burton Township will be holding their annual Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 9 at 2:00 p.m. in Thelen Park. Grab your best basket and camera and come meet the Bunny at the annual Egg Hunt. There will be over 3,000 eggs with two special eggs per age group. Find a special egg and win a basket filled with toys and candy. All children must be accompanied by an adult throughout the event. To guarantee there are enough

Man pleads guilty to murder in road rage shooting incident

On Friday, March 25, Sheldon Brown pled guilty to a single count of first-degree murder for the October 2020 shooting death of Dwayne Young, a faSheldon ther of five. Brown Brown’s guilty plea means he will face a sentence ranging from 45 years to life.

On April 1, at approximately 8:00 p.m., deputies from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the 19900 block of Streit Road in Harvard for a check for well-being. Upon deputies’ arrival, a male subject exited the residence with a firearm. An armed confrontation occurred between the subject and the deputies. The deputies discharged their firearms, ultimately striking the subject. No deputies were injured during the confrontation. Lifesaving measures were given to the subject and he was transported by Harvard Fire Protection District to Mercy Harvard Hospital.

Late on the evening of October 9, 2020, Brown and Young were driving separate vehicles that were involved in a minor collision with each other. Brown exited his vehicle brandishing a handgun and approached Young, who was unarmed and seated in his vehicle. Brown fired several times into the car, hitting Young once. Young died at a nearby hospital not long after the incident. Several eyewitnesses identified Brown and Brown confessed to Waukegan Police in a videotaped statement. Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart thanked Assistant State’s Attorneys Dan Lenzini and Russell Caskey and victim witness coordinator Jenna Melloy for their hard work and for their frequent meetings with Mr. Young’s family. Rinehart stated, “This offender, in a fit of road rage, decided to kill Mr. Young. While the family cannot be made whole - they have suffered immeasurably - they

A struggle ensued between all three males and when the Awad brothers broke away to flee Glover discharged the firearm four times, striking Anthony three times and killing him, and injuring Jonathan. Police recovered the gun from a sewer at the site of the shooting after Glover attempted to conceal it. State’s Attorney Rinehart said, “Chiefs Jeff Facklam and Lauren Callinan did an amazing job in this trial. On Friday, April 1, at approximately 9:20 a.m., a silver 2005 Ford Explorer driven by a 29-year-old female from Beach Park was traveling northbound on Sheridan Road north of Chaney Avenue in Beach Park. A 7-year-old male and dog, both of whom were also from Beach Park, entered the roadway on Sheridan Road north of Chaney Avenue and were struck by the northbound Ford Explorer. The driver and sole occupant of the Ford Explorer was not injured and remained at the scene. The child was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with critical injuries. The child will be transferred to Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago for further treatment. The dog was believed to be deceased and was removed from the scene by bystanders. The driver of the Ford Explorer is cooperating in the investigation. Impairment is not believed to be a factor. The investigation will continue through the Sheriff’s Technical Crash Investigation Unit.
