Collectors of extremely rare, iconic screen-used cars are about to enjoy the chance of a lifetime Volo Auto Museum is offering during an April 1421 no-reserve eBay auction a 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport replica used by Vin Diesel and Paul Walker in the train heist scene from “Fast 5”; a screen-used ’66 Ferrari GTB replica built for “Ford v Ferrari”; a ’65 Econoline van also built for “Ford v Ferrari”; a 1966 Chrysler Imperial “Black Beauty” used in the 2011 remake of “The Green Hornet”; and more. There’s also a Sony promotional “Ghostbusters” hearse from the 2016 film featuring Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig and Leslie Jones; a 1958 Chevy Nomad that is one of just two built for and used throughout the 2020 thriller “Let Him Go,” featuring Kevin Costner and Diane Lane; and a screen-used 1973 Ferrari Daytona from an upcoming Bradley Cooper film called “Soggy Bottom” — as well as from the TV series “9-1-1.” “Any one of these cars
is a fantastic find and a tremendous investment,” said Brian Grams, director of the museum at 27582 Volo Village Road. “We simply need to make room for some new exhibits, and recoup some of the cost of the upgrades and spectacular new interactive spaces we have been building during the pandemic shutdown.” As is always the case at the ever-evolving Volo Auto Museum, the rarities don’t stop with film-famous cars. This auction will feature at least four immaculately restored and fully functional 1950s kiddie rides, too. Looking to outshine the neighbor’s golf cart? With its eye-catching art-deco styling and flounce-edged bimini top, you may want to place a bid on the 1957 Walker Executive golf cart that also will be included in the auction. A Disney trolley, a 1918 and 1926 Model T and even a 1937 Pierce Arrow camper all will be among the items sold to the highest bidders, with no buyers’ premiums and no reserve, Grams said. “It’s a really exciting grouping,” Grams said. “Winning bidders will walk away with some remarkable treasures. The yellow ‘Ford
v Ferrari’ sports car, for example, was built to replicate an actual racer from the infamous 1966 LeMans — a car that’s worth $40 million today.” Volo’s screen-used No. 57 lookalike features a custom-built chassis built to drive at high track speeds, with a Mustang 5.0 engine and manual 5-speed transmission. Former teacher arrested while allegedly trying to leave U.S. ahead of child sex charges Ilan Gibori, a 46-year old Vernon Hills resident, was arrested Thursday by the Department of Homeland Security at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport while allegedly attempting to evade a Lake County arrest warrant for criminal sexual assault charges. On March 24, 2021, the Vernon Hills Police Department received information from the Department of Children and Family Services that Gibori had sexually assaulted a minor victim on numerous occasions over a period of several years. A preliminary investigation determined Gibori met the victim while he was a teacher at Cooper Middle School in Buffalo Grove in 2017. Gibori left Cooper Middle School in July 2019 and has worked at The House Tutoring Lounge in Glencoe. The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office worked with the Vernon Hills Police Department to quickly obtain an arrest warrant for Gibori. A State’s Attorney’s investigator notified Homeland Security Investigations at O’Hare and Dallas-Fort Worth airports to locate and apprehend Gibori based on the warrant. Expansion of vote by mail, curbside voting will head to governor Bill makes permanent changes from 2020 election

A bill to expand the use of vote-by-mail and curbside voting in future elections passed the Illinois Senate March 25, meaning it needs only a signature from the governor to become law. House Bill 1871, which was approved by the House last week, would revise the state election code to make permanent some of the changes that were widely adopted across Illinois for the 2020 general election in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. If the bill is sent to the governor and signed quickly enough, it would take effect immediately, possibly in time for the April 6 elections. The changes include allowing election authorities to install drop box sites where voters can submit mail-in ballots without postage during and on Election Day. The bill also permits curbside voting where people can fill out ballots outside the polling place during early voting and on Election Day. The bill, sponsored by Democratic Sen. Julie Morrison of Lake Forest, would also require election authorities to accept mail-in ballots with insufficient or no postage. The bill states that ballots turned in after the close of business “shall be dated
as delivered the next day, with the exception of ballots delivered on election day, which shall be dated as received on election day.” Thomas Bride, executive director at Peoria County Election Commission, said this provision was carried out in his county by installing a locked cover on the drop box by 7 p.m. on election night. “At that point, the drop box was locked and any (ballots) that were deposited before 7 p.m. were counted, and then it stopped the ability to leave (ballots) in the drop box after 7 p.m.,” Bride said during the Senate Executive Committee on Wednesday. The bill passed out of that committee on partisan lines Wednesday and advanced to the Senate floor for a vote, where it was approved on a bipartisan roll call with 48 votes in favor and seven against. Drop box use for April 6 election The law authorizing ballot drop boxes and curbside voting for the 2020 election expired on Jan. 1, 2021. But some election authorities, including Cook County, have continued to use drop boxes for the February primary election and the upcoming April 6 consolidated election. Sangamon County, which did not have a February pri-
mary, is using one drop box that is located on the premises of the county building for the April election. The second drop box in Sangamon County that was available during 2020 outside of the county Regional Office of Education is not being used for the upcoming election. Matt Dietrich, spokesperson for the state Board of Elections, said the Election Code is silent on drop boxes, as it is currently written. He said drop boxes were specifically authorized in the election bill for the 2020 general election. “When that law expired on Jan. 1, there was no specific prohibition on their use nor was there any authorization for their use,” Dietrich said in an email. Sangamon County Clerk Don Gray said his office is treating the single drop box outside the county building as an extension of the election office. The state’s election code allows voters to return their mail-in ballots to the election authority office, which is the county election office in Sangamon County. “I can’t stress enough how universally popular and successful this resource was in the November general election,” Gray said in a phone interview. Sangamon County voters from both parties “utilized it often, and resoundingly praised it as a service,” Gray
said of the two drop boxes. “We don’t want to confuse voters,” he said, by taking away a resource that was available to voters in November. “There’s risks in anything but, you know, we believe this to be an accommodation of an extension of our office for people to return their ballots in this unique challenging environment of COVID-19, including for the consolidated (April) election,” Gray said. Larry Suffredin, an election attorney and Cook County Board Commissioner, said he didn’t think any legal challenge would be brought over the ballots returned to the drop boxes on county clerk’s office premises because those ballots remain under the care and control of the clerk’s office. “[County clerks] control the lockbox, they control the access to the lockbox and the law says that your mail in ballot is to be returned to the clerk. So I don’t think that you have a legal issue with what’s going on right now,” Suffredin said. But, given that the April election is expected to have lower turnout compared to presidential elections, the number of ballots being challenged “would be very limited,” Suffredin said. “(The challenge) would not have much impact, but I don’t see where they would have a claim,” he said.

The scholarship, named in honor of the Society’s former administrator, the McHenry County Historical Society & Museum awards a $1,000 scholarship annually to a graduating senior from a McHenry County high school who plans to study education, history, or the social sciences. This merit-based scholarship will be given in the winning student’s name to his or her college / university. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, provide two letters of recommendation (one from a faculty member and one from another representative of the community), show proof of community service, and write a minimum 500word essay relevant to McHenry County. Essay topics are announced each year by the Society. This year’s topic is: At this time of a worldwide health crisis, it might be instructive to look back and see how our county and state dealt with

The McHenry County Department of Health has announced a new process for scheduling appointments to get COVID-19 vaccine. In response to the state’s recent announcement expanding Phase 1b eligibility, MCDH is opening appointments to all Phase 1b and Phase 1b Part 2. However, eligibility does not necessarily mean immediate access to a vaccination appointment. It will take time to vaccinate the remaining eligible population in the county and appointments will be available based on vaccine allotments received. To assist residents in scheduling their vaccine appointment, MCDH is now using the State of Illinois’ COVID-19 Vaccine Registration page at https:// covidvaccination.dph.illinois.gov/. Residents are encouraged to visit the site frequently as new appointments will be posted regularly and are expected to fill up quickly. Those eligible to receive their vaccine at an MCDH clinic will no longer need to enroll, but anyone who received their first vaccine through MCDH will receive an email directing them how to schedule their second appointment when it is due. Those who receive their first vaccine on or after March 22 will be provided instructions on how to make their second dose appointment at the time they receive their first dose. Those with no or limited access to the internet and those who need translation services may schedule an appointment through the MCDH Call Center at (815) 334-4045 or by calling the Illinois Department of Public Health hotline at (833) 621-1284. Until April 12 when vaccine eligibility opens to all residents age 16 and over, MCDH will be working as quickly as possible to accommodate those in the expanded Phase 1b group. COVID-19 vaccinations at MCDH-run clinics will continue to be by appointment only and limited to McHenry County residents and those who are employed at a business in the county. A photo ID and proof of residency or employment within McHenry County must presented at a first-dose appointment. For those receiving the second dose, a photo ID and the vaccination card/record must be presented. If this information is not provided at the time of the appointment, MCDH reserves the right to deny you the vaccine. State and Federal partnerships with retail pharmacies are another option for receiving vaccine. Locations of participating pharmacies can be found at coronavirus. illinois.gov. Mobile COVID-19 testing offered this week in Lake County The Lake County Health Department is announcing that free Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) testing is coming to Mundelein and Highland Park. A mobile testing unit managed by the Illinois Department of Public Health will be stationed in the county according to the following schedule: • Thursday, April 1, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Mundelein Metra Station, 205 N Archer Ave., Mundelein. • Friday, April 2, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Highland Park Metra Station, 1700 St. John’s Ave., Highland Park.
Know Before You Go Testing is free and open to all regardless of symptoms. A phone number and name are required in order to receive testing results. Photo identification and proof of insurance are helpful, but not required. High demand for testing may result in long wait times. On Monday, March 22, members of the Fox Lake Police Department conducted a traffic stop for speeding. During the traffic stop, officers detected a strong odor of fresh cannabis from the vehicle. During a subsequent investigation and search of the vehicle, approximately 400 grams of cannabis were seized. The cannabis was individually packages, in smaller amounts. The packaging was designed to look like the commercially
available cannabis that might have been purchased at a cannabis dispensary. Additionally, $2,875 in U.S. currency was also seized. The driver and passenger were both arrested and charged as follows: Anthony Deshazor, 31, 10000 block of May Street, Chicago was charged with: manufacturing and delivery of cannabis (class 3 felony), and possession of cannabis less than 500 grams (class 4 felony). On Wednesday, March 24, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office announced that a Grand Jury indicted former Vernon Hills Deputy Chief of Police Patrick Zimmerman on two felony counts of official misconduct and two misdemeanor theft counts. The Grand Jury alleged that Zimmerman falsified records related to the Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The STEP program disperses grant funds to local police departments who use the money to compensate officers for additional time spent on traffic enforcement. The STEP program is widely used throughout Illinois and Lake County. Zimmerman resigned from the Vernon Hills Police Department in September 2020, after the department identified discrepancies in his grant documentation. A subsequent internal investigation revealed that Zimmerman had been paid over $4,000 based on false traffic citations he had written. While the allegedly falsified records triggered payment of grant funds by the Village of Vernon Hills, the tickets were never submitted for processing to the village,
