PM&L Theatre welcomes guests back for live performances ‘I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change’ opens Friday PM&L Theatre presents “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” beginning Feb. 4. The show is a musical revue celebrating the mating game. This crowd-pleasing comedy takes on the truths and myths behind the contemporary conundrum known as ‘the relationship’. Act I explores the journey from dating and waiting, to love and marriage, while Act II reveals the agonies and triumphs of in-laws and newborns, trips in the family car and pick-up techniques of the geriatric set. This hilarious revue pays tribute to those who have loved and lost, to those who have fallen on their face at the portal of romance, and to those who have dared to ask “What are you doing Saturday night?” PM&L Theatre is located at 877 Main Street, Antioch. Sheriff’s K9s track, apprehend armed robbery suspects
On January 16, 2022, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a business in the 37700 block of North Green Bay Road, Beach Park, for an armed robbery. The owner of the business, a 52-year-old man, called 911 to report that a man entered the store with a firearm and took money from a cash register. Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene and learned the offender fled on foot. Sheriff’s Canine Duke and Deputy Arrowood arrived at the scene and began an immediate track. Canine Duke tracked to a car stuck in a snowbank, approximately one block away. A man was located in the driver’s seat, Darrell D. Brown, 29, of the 20 block of Lake Street, Waukegan. Brown did not match the description of the offender, however, based on surveillance video obtained from the robbery, was likely the getaway driver. The vehicle Brown was driving was stolen. The registration affixed to the vehicle was also stolen. Additionally, Brown was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested without incident. Sheriff’s Canine Danno and Deputy Martini arrived to continue tracking the offender who committed the armed robbery. While responding to the scene, Deputy Martini spotted the offender in the area of Northern Avenue and Yorkhouse Road, Beach Park. The offender ran into a wooded area. Deputy Martini deployed Canine Danno and the two began tracking the man. Canine Danno located the man hiding near a shed in the 12400 block of West Paddock avenue, Beach Park. The man, Terrell Davis, 30, of the 600 block of Massena Avenue, Waukegan, was initially noncompliant, but surrendered after Danno began aggressively barking. Davis was found to be in possession of proceeds of the robbery, along with a key to the stolen vehicle Brown was driving. Deputy Martini and Canine Danno then began an article search along the path Davis fled. Canine Danno located a knit cap that Davis wore during the robbery, along with the firearm Davis used during the robbery. Davis and Brown were transported to the sheriff’s office criminal investigations division, as detectives conducted additional follow-up.

Upcoming free workshops continue Annual Lake County Rising event to bring art community together “It wasn’t just thanks for the free workshops, they also expressed that they feel these workshops are necessary for the community to come together,” Davis-Salazar said. “We heard things like ‘keep doing this,’ ‘this is awesome’ and ‘this is vital.’” Participation was high, Davis-Salazar said, despite the workshops being new and limitations due to the ongoing pandemic. There will be four more workshops this spring, two each for Artist to Artist (ATA) and Engaging Art Scholars for Excellence (EASE). ATA workshops are geared towards adults. The goal of ATA is to connect local artists with CLC, and then to connect one step further with the community. In each workshop, a CLC instructor will pair up with a talented local artist to teach. This gives those who attend
the workshops the opportunity to create connections with both CLC and someone in the community, as well as others around them. Last fall, local artists enjoyed the opportunity to meet and learn from one another and share their unique skillsets to help each other improve.

Every year residents of Lake County are invited to attend a public event demanding the end of violence against women. Lake County Rising is our community’s version of One Billion Rising, a global movement. In an abundance of caution due to COVID, the gathering will be virtually this year. Join online at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 8, as community members share how the principles of respect, grace, and kindness can result in a safer community for women, and for all citizens. The evening will feature both a poetry and essay reading, presented by high school students who submitted their original work as part of a contest. Round Lake High School’s Ghostlight Theater will share their interpretation of the place that respect, grace, and kindness have in ending violence against women. Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart will attend the event and commented, “This will be an amazing program that highlights the different ways that we can come together as a community to support and raise up those survivors affected by violence.” Resources of interest to individuals experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, and other issues will be available before and after the program (from 6:45 to 7 pm. and again for 15 minutes after the program ends). Lake County Rising is sponsored by the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office in partnership with Nicasa Behavioral Health Services, the College of Lake County’s Women’s Outreach and Programs, Mano a Mano Family Resource Center, A Safe Place, ZCenter, and YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago. Mixed media artist and College of Lake County (CLC) Art Instructor Katrina Davis-Salazar is excited to carry the success and momentum of the first art workshops at the Lakeshore Campus into the next round this winter and spring. The initial workshops last fall exceeded Davis-Salazar’s expectations in bringing local artists together after she saw the comradery between individuals. “Participants not only made connections with the workshop leaders, but also with each other,” she said. “It was awesome to see these connections being made in the community.” While she was happy the participants had fun during the workshops, Davis-Salazar was even more excited about the importance the participants placed on the workshops for the health of our community.

Work at the preserve, set amid bustling suburbs, included the expansion of the Buffalo Creek Reservoir and increasing the region’s resiliency against flooding. The project expanded the capacity of wetland terraces, improved erosion control and added recreational amenities for users. “The most recent public access improvements at Buffalo Creek include the addition of 1.7 miles of trails, seven new boardwalks, two scenic overlooks, and additional parking spaces,” said Angelo Kyle, president of the Lake County Forest Preserves. “Restoration efforts included 19 acres of new wetland, 60 acres of new upland prairie and savanna, 1,000 native trees and shrubs and a massive expansion of the reservoir that will provide an additional 180 acre-feet of flood storage.”

Nine parking spaces have been added at the southwest corner of the intersection of Old Hicks and Checker roads. The area connects directly to the Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve trail network. The village of Long Grove owns and maintains the lot. “We were thrilled to work with Long Grove officials to create additional parking at this favored forest preserve,” said Marah Altenberg, Lake County Forest Preserves board member. “After recent improvements at Buffalo Creek, it has become a prominent destination for recreation.”

JB Pritzker on Jan. 24 vetoed a bill that would have provided paid administrative leave for public school and university employees who miss work due to COVID-19-related issues and instead negotiated “compromise” legislation that would provide such leave to only those who are fully vaccinated. “Vaccines are a vital tool in preventing the deadly effects of COVID-19, and those who take the steps to be fully vaccinated against this virus are doing their part to keep everyone safe,” Pritzker said in his veto message. “They deserve to be able to take the time they need to respond to the ongoing devastating impacts the COVID-19 pandemic continues to have on them and their families.” House Bill 2778 passed the General Assembly during the fall veto session with wide bipartisan majorities, 53-1 in the Senate and 92-23 in the House. Child pornography investigation leads to 15 felony charges Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives concluded a child pornography investigation, which led to a Lake County Grand Jury Indictment of 15 felony counts. In August of 2021, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies met a victim who had been unlawfully video recorded at a residence in the 371000 block of Loretto Avenue in Unincorporated Lake Villa. The victim reported to sheriff’s deputies, while living with a family friend, Wilbur J. Maltby, 51, at the home on Loretto Avenue, she found a strange device plugged into an outlet in the bathroom. The device resembled a charging cube, commonly used to charge electronics, but a closer examination of the device revealed it appeared to contain a hidden camera. The victim dissembled the device and found there was a memory card inside of it. An inspection of the contents of the memory card revealed nude footage of her and others inside the bathroom of the home. The victim called the sheriff’s office upon seeing what was contained on the memory card. On November 9, 2021, sheriff’s detectives conducted a search warrant at Maltby’s residence. Sheriff’s detectives seized multiple electronic devices, including devices with electronic storage. Maltby was initially charged on November 9, 2021, with two counts of unlawful video recording at a residence. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Cybercrime Division conducted an analysis on the devices seized during the search warrant, which revealed numerous photos and videos of nude individuals and manufactured child pornography, recorded at three different locations. Further investigation revealed Maltby was responsible for recording the nude images and videos of both children and adults. Following the examination of the electronics seized during the search warrant and additional investigation, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office presented several additional charges to the Lake County Grand Jury. On January 19, 2022 the Lake County Grand Jury re-
turned indictments for Maltby on the following charges: Three counts of manufacturing child pornography (class X felonies), Seven counts of possession of child pornography (two class 1 felonies, three class 2 felonies, two class 3 felonies), and five counts of unauthorized video recording (1 class 3 felony, four class 4 felonies). Sheriff John D. Idleburg said, “Our detectives did a terrific job thoroughly investigating this incident, which ultimately led to positively identifying nine additional victims. Due to their diligence, our detectives have been able to provide the first steps of justice for the identified victims.” Maltby is next due in court on January 24, 2022 at 9:00 a.m.
Special investigations group arrests suspected drug trafficker after investigation
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Group concluded a monthlong investigation into a man suspected of trafficking drugs in Lake County. The investigation concluded with Special Investigations Group Detectives conducting a search warrant at the residence of a convicted felon, Deonte L. Johnson, 34, of the 1500 block of North Avenue, Waukegan. During the search warrant, detectives located and seized: Four firearms, one of which was stolen, 148 ecstasy pills, 58 grams of powder MDMA, over 170 grams of cocaine, amounts of methamphetamine, oxycodone pills, and heroin, and over 28 pounds of cannabis. Nearly all of the drugs were packaged for distribution. Following the investigation, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges for Johnson: four counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, four counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, three counts of unlawful possession
of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to distribute, and unlawful possession of cannabis. The above charges range from ‘class x felonies’ to ‘class 4 felonies.’ Sheriff John D. Idleburg said, “Our Special Investigations Group is doing an excellent job finding those who are trafficking guns, drugs, and people in our community. I am very proud of the number of dangerous people they have arrested and the massive amounts of drugs they have been keeping out of Lake County.”
Man arrested on drug charges after Pedestrian crash attempting to flee investigation results from Dollar Tree store in charges The McHenry County
Sheriff’s arrested Carlo V. Yescas-Noriega, 45 of Carpentersville, on an outstanding warrant for theft. At approximately 1:00 p.m. on January 27, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Investigators followed YesCarlo V. cas-Noriega Yescasfrom his residence, located Noriega on the 2000 block of Limestone Lane, Carpentersville, to the parking lot of the Dollar Tree store located at 1402 E. Algonquin Rd., Algonquin. As investigators approached him, he attempted to flee and was ultimately apprehended inside the store, at which time Yescas-Noriega provided a false name and identification. During his attempt to flee, investigators located 114 grams of suspected cocaine that he tried to hide on a store shelf. While collecting evidence from the scene the store was closed for a couple of hours. No employees or customers were involved in the incident and no injuries were reported. As a result of the cocaine recovered from the scene, a search warrant was conducted at his residence. Carpentersville Police Department assisted with the investigation. A 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe was also seized as a result of his arrest. Charges against Yescas-Noriega are as listed: possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver 100g-400g cocaine (class X), possession of a controlled substance 100g-400g cocaine (class 1), and resisting or obstructing a peace officer (class A). Additional charges may be sought at a later date through the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Members of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigation Unit concluded their investigation into the June 19, 2021 vehicle vs. pedestrian crash. The investigation consisted of collecting data at the scene, scene measurements, a vehicle examination, and search warrants/subpoenas for various information. The driver of the Chevrolet Impala, Joe Paredes, 30 at the time of the crash, now 31, of the 24300 block of West Tyler Avenue, Unincorporated Round Lake, was suspected of driving under the influence of intoxicating substances the night of the crash. A search warrant was obtained for Paredes’ blood, and upon receiving the toxicology results, it was determined he was indeed under the influence of cannabis at the time of the crash. The toxicology results of the pedestrian, Matthew C. Evers, 34, of the 1200 block of Karyn Lane, Grayslake, revealed a blood-alcohol level that was over three times the legal limit to operate a vehicle. It remains unknown why Evers abruptly exited his rideshare and entered the roadway. Once all of the data was obtained and the investigation was concluded, sheriff’s traffic crash investigators met
with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office. The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges for Paredes: Driving Under the Influence of Drugs, and Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle. Paredes is due back in court on February 23, 2022 at 9:00 a.m. Original complaint: Sheriff’s Technical Crash Team Investigating Wauconda Township Vehicle vs Pedestrian Crash (issued June 20, 2021) On June 19, 2021, at approximately 11:45 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Route 120 west of Fisher Road in Wauconda Township for a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic crash with injuries. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located the pedestrian, a 34-year-old man of Grayslake, with life-threatening injuries. Preliminary investigation shows minutes before the crash the pedestrian exited a vehicle on Route 120 and began walking. As the pedestrian was walking along the shoulder, he entered the roadway in the westbound lanes, where he was struck by a westbound Chevrolet Impala, driven by a 30-year-old man of Unincorporated Round Lake. Initially, the pedestrian was transported via ambulance to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Unincorporated Barrington, but due to the severity of his injuries, he was then transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge via medical helicopter. He currently remains at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in critical condition.
Sheriff’s Office releases renderings of men involved in vehicle hijacking

and approximately 160170 pounds. The second man was described as being African American, with a darker complexion, and being larger. Both men are believed to be in their 20’s. Original complaint: Sheriff’s Detectives Investigating Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking in Green Oaks On November 27, 2021, at approximately 6:10 a.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a business in the 14500 block of West Rockland Road, Green Oaks, for an aggravated vehicular hijacking that just occurred. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found the victim, a 42-year-old man, parked his vehicle to begin his shift at work. When he opened the car door, he was quickly approached by two men. One of the men was armed with a handgun and struck the victim in the head and face with the handgun. The men were described as African American, in their 20’s, and wearing black hooded sweatshirts. One of the men entered the victim’s 2019 Kia Forte, bearing Illinois Registration BU47018, and drove away in an unknown direction. The other man fled, likely in an escape vehicle. The victim was treated by paramedics at the scene for the injuries he sustained, but he was not transported to the hospital. Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives are investigating.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges for Davis: Armed Robbery (Class X Felony), Armed Habitual Criminal (Class X Felony), Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon (Class 2 Felony), Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon (Class 2 Felony), Obstructing Justice (Class 4 Felony), Fugitive from Justice (Due to Minnesota Warrant) and Resisting a Peace Officer (Class A Misdemeanor). Chages for Brown are as follows: Aggravated DUI (Class 4 Felony), Unlawful Possession of Stolen Registration (Class 4 Felony), and No Insurance.
