Rotary Secret Santa readies to deliver thousands of toys to area children

A small army of elves soon will wield scissors and tape upon festive paper during the Rotary Secret Santa program’s wrapping and delivery weekend Dec. 17-19. Begun in 2014 by McHenry Sunrise Rotary, the program now is coordinated by the McHenry Area Rotary, which formed in 2020 as the merger of the Sunrise club and the Rotary Club of McHenry. For the past several years, the effort has provided roughly 8,000 toys to about 2,000 children annually. It serves those who are ages infant to 12, said Mike Lehman, program founder and chairman. Rotary Secret Santa takes assistance requests from families countywide through Wednesday, Dec. 8. Volunteers will deliver gifts on Dec. 19, Lehman said, adding that while the Marines Toys for Tots program supplies the largest share of the toys, community members also donate. And this year, a $5,700 McHenry Home Depot grant is covering dozens of toys to fill gaps in the newborn to 3 and 10- to 12-year-old categories. “It was kind of last-min-
ute, and a huge blessing,” Lehman said. “I had talked with the store manager last year as I was purchasing the heavy-duty garbage bags we use to make deliveries. This year, she donated several hundred garbage bags, plus more than 150 toys. “I had mentioned that we still could use more toys for certain age groups, and within 24 hours she had this grant approved,” Lehman said of Geri Quirk-Blanken, McHenry store manager and a district Team Depot community captain with the Home Depot Foundation. Quirk-Blanken said she was thrilled to help. The donation includes 181 children’s items, ranging from art sets to remote-controlled monster trucks. “I remember when I was starting off as a young parent; it was a struggle to provide for the kids at the holidays,” she said. “I asked Mike ‘What can I do besides helping to wrap gifts?’” Lehman said those who need assistance should go to sunrisesecretsanta. com and complete the online form by Wednesday, Dec. 8, for consideration. Those who’d like to help also can visit the site. Although most wrapping vol-
unteer shifts already were filled as of Friday, Dec. 3, numerous delivery slots remained available on Dec. 19. A few wrapping session clean-up crew slots also remained open for the afternoon of Dec. 18. Donations of new, unwrapped toys will be accepted through Dec. 18, Lehman said. Drop-off sites include McHenry District 15 schools as well as Alex’s Drive Inn, Buddyz Pizzeria and Gary Lang Auto Group in McHenry, plus the Lake House on Pistakee, Northern Light Care and Stucky’s Bar and Grille in Johnsburg. The program never ceases to renew participants’ holiday spirit, Lehman said. “The camaraderie that goes on between volunteers is just amazing,” he said. “Spirits are up. People are feeling good about the holiday and about seeing their neighbors. They just enjoy being a part of this and giving back.” Several area businesses supply teams of volunteers who help with wrapping, while others have provided key financial support, he added. Raoul said they’re worth millions of dollars. It took a team of 15 AG investigators and law enforcement officers nine hours to unpack all of the items that were recovered, Raoul said. The task force was launched in response to smash-and-grab incidents and other retail crimes in which several individuals clear out retail merchandise from stores in a matter of minutes. Downtown Chicago has seen several such incidents, including at luxury handbag retailers and other high-end stores. But Raoul said it’s a nationwide problem. “This is something that’s evolving for law enforcement nationally,” he said. “I’ve spoken to (AG) colleagues in California … and in Michigan and they’re sort of following our lead and es-

An unrelated arrest by the Chicago Police Department on Sunday led to a state task force Dec. 3 seizing millions of dollars’ worth of goods stolen from retailers in what Attorney General Kwame Raoul described as an organized retail crime operation. Raoul announced the raid in a news conference last week, calling it the “first major bust” resulting from the work of the Organized Retail Crime Task Force overseen by his office. That statewide public-private collaboration includes retailers, online marketplaces, law enforcement agencies and state’s attorneys. “The task force brings together law enforcement from federal, state and local agencies, retailers, online marketplaces, to share information and resources to identify and prosecute criminal enterprises frequently behind these well-organized schemes that can sometimes be mistaken for isolated incidents of retail theft,” he
said. The task force seized four semi-truckloads of goods found after a search warrant was served on eight storage units at two separate locations. Chicago Police Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said the bust announced Friday started with a beat officer who made an unrelated arrest on a gun charge. That suspect was charged with a crime, but the retail theft investigation is ongoing, he said. “So I really want to compliment everybody who’s standing behind me but also a beat officer who made an arrest and said, ‘Hey, there’s some something wrong here. There’s something different, you know, this guy’s got some stolen items in his car,’” Deenihan said. “Then we get our retail crime team involved. And then the communication really starts with the attorney general’s office, and we’re able to recover these items before they go missing.” While Raoul said a com-

Sheriff’s Office hosting IDNR snowmobile safety course Beginning snowmobilers will have an opportunity to learn principles of safe snowmobile operation at an Illinois Department of Natural Resources safety education course scheduled on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021; and Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022 from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, 2200 N. Seminary Avenue, Woodstock, IL. Under Illinois law, the course is required for individuals 12 through 16 years old who plan to operate a snowmobile. The course is also required for individuals who are over the age of 16 and who do not possess a valid driver’s license. These individuals must have
a Snowmobile Safety Education Certificate, issued by the Department of Natural Resources upon successful completion of the course. The Snowmobile Safety Education Certificate is recognized in other states requiring a Safety Education Certificate. The Snowmobile Safety Education Certificate is required in the state of Wisconsin for anyone under the age of 27. The minimum eight-hour course includes instruction in safe operation, rules of the road, snowmobile law, first aid, proper riding techniques and related topics that will help the snowmobiler operate his/her vehicle safely. The course is free of charge and open to the public.
Due to COVID-19 concerns, class size will be limited to 20 students. If you are signing up a child, you are welcome to stay and take the class with them. If you are doing so, please be sure to complete a registration reservation form. Per IDNR requirements, our classes will require students to use social distancing, wearing of a proper mask, and to bring hand sanitizer. If you are not feeling well, please stay home. Operation Feed 33 donations being collected through Dec. 15 The Jake Vinyard Foundation is hosting its annual food drive to help and support families in need this holiday season. Operation Feed 33 is accepting donations so they can provide meals to those in need this Christmas. Donations will be taken through December 15.

MCAC holding ‘Whisker Wonderland’ adoption event
The McHenry County Animal Control (MCAC) will host “Whisker Wonderland” adoption events on Wednesday, Dec. 15, and Saturday, Dec. 18, to help connect potential adopters with cats and kittens that are ready to meet their forever-family this holiday season. The MCAC has young kittens that will not be old enough to adopt until these events. Potential adopters who schedule an appointment will have the first chance to meet newly adoptable kittens, as well as meet all available adult cats. Adult cats will have reduced adoption fees, up to 50% off. This event cannot accommodate walkins. Adopters must fill out an adoption form and be approved before they schedule an appointment. Those who are pre-approved will be able to schedule an appointment to meet adoptable cats between 4 and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 15, or between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18. During these events, MCAC staff will be available to help match adopters with the right pet for them and answer questions about cat care or pet
ownership. All adopters will leave with a goodie bag to help them get started caring for their new furry friends. “Our staff wants you to find the right fit so you can build plenty of amazing memories with a new member of the family. Pets bring joy and love into peoples’ lives, and people can bring that same sense of joy to an animal,” said Maryellen Howell, Director of McHenry County Animal Control. All adoptable cats are spayed/ neutered, microchipped, given flea and tick control treatment, given ageappropriate vaccinations, and FIV/FeLV tested. Young kittens that have not been spayed/neutered or vaccinated, will be able to return to the shelter later for free spay/neuter and vaccination. Two arrested on battery, attempted murder charges The Fox Lake Police Department announced the arrest of Kylie R Fecht, 29, and Ryan B. Fecht, 29, both Ingleside (Fox Lake), IL residents on the following charges: Kylie Fecht – Attempt (First Degree Murder) (720 ILCS 5/9-1(a)(1)) Class X Felony; Ryan Fecht – Battery (720 ILCS 5/12-3 (A)
(1)) Class A Misdemeanor. The charges are stemming from a physical altercation between Ryan Fecht, Kylie Fecht and a third person, Florencio Reyes that occurred on December 3, 2021 at approximately 5:55 p.m. Ryan and Kylie were formerly husband and wife. Reyes and Kylie Fecht were
recently in a dating relationship. Reyes, a 32 year old Round Lake Beach resident, arrived at 508 Lincoln to retrieve personal belongings when a physical fight between he and Ryan Fecht occurred. During the physical altercation Kylie Fecht joined in the fight. She was armed with a knife,
and stabbed Reyes twice. Reyes fled the area and went to Vista Medical Center in Lindenhurst. He was later transferred to Advocate Condell Medical Center (Libertyville, IL) for treatment of his stab wounds. His injuries are serious but not considered life threatening. In the early morning
hours of December 4, 2021, arrest warrants were issued for Kylie Fecht and Ryan Fecht for the above charges, as well as a search warrant for the residence at 508 Lincoln. At approximately 7:45 a.m., the arrest warrants were served at 508 Lincoln by the Fox Lake Police Department with the assistance
of the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) Emergency Services Team (EST). Once Ryan and Kylie were taken into custody the search warrant was executed at the residence. No one was injured during the execution of the arrest or search warrants and the investigation is ongoing.
Community Based Correctional Center temporarily closed Due to three of 19 inmates testing positive for Covid-19 who were serving sentenced time in the Community Based Correctional Center (work release), per the guidance of health officials, the CBCC will be temporarily closed. All CBCC inmates will be tested prior to being moved into the jail. Any CBCC inmate who tests positive will be transferred to the Covid-19 POD in the jail, while all who test negative will move to Covid-19 negative PODs. The Covid-19 positive numbers have ticked-up at the jail since the outbreak was identified and now includes 48 positive inmates and 11 positive correctional officers. Those who have contracted the illness consist of both vaccinated and unvaccinated people.
COVID-19 outbreak in Lake County jail being closely monitored The Lake County Jail has motoring a Covid-19 outbreak within the jail. Recently four inmates and
three correctional officers tested positive for Covid-19. Upon learning this information, immediate additional mitigation protocols were initiated, in addition to the other mitigation protocols already in place. These new mitigations, utilized during outbreaks, consist of: • No inmates allowed to exit their assigned POD without approval of jail command • All inmate programming cancelled until further notice • All professional visits are to be completed in the
POD visiting booths, versus face-to-face • Any inmate transported inside the facility is required to utilize an N-95 mask • At no time are inmates from different housing units allowed to come in contact with each other As of November 29, an additional ten inmates tested positive for Covid-19, as did four additional correctional officers, bringing the total number of Covid-19 positive inmates to 14 and correctional officers to seven. All of those who have tested positive are experiencing mild symptoms and nobody has required hospitalization. All inmates housed in the jail have been provided opportunities to receive a
Covid-19 vaccine. To date, over 280 doses of vaccine have been administered to inmates. The current jail population is 451 inmates. A number of protocols have been in effect to reduce the likelihood of Covid-19 entering the jail, as well as enhanced mitigation procedures should inmates feel ill. These include: • Enhanced medical screening for inmates and employees entering the jail: All newly remanded inmates are Covid-19 rapid tested upon entry into the jail; Inmates are then placed in a ten-day hold; After the ten-day hold, inmates are Covid-19 rapid tested again, before being moved to general population; All newly remanded inmates are provided an
