Distinguished graduates honored at football game
David Lawson David Lawson graduated from MCHS in 1974 and received his MBA from Webster University. Later he received his school business manager certification from Northern Illinois University. He served as a member of the McHenry Elementa-
ry District 15 and McHenry Community High School District 156 school boards as well as the McHenry City Council as an Alderman for Ward 4. Lawson worked for many years in the private sector before working in school finance for school districts in Glen Ellyn, Skokie, Johnsburg, and finally as chief financial officer for McHenry Community High School District 156. During his tenure as CFO for District 156, Lawson helped balance the budget during a financial crisis and ensured surpluses were available to advance learning and activities for students. Lawson also saw the passage of the 2018 referendum and assisted with the construction planning of the new Center for Science, Technology, and Industry. Lawson has been active in volunteering, fundraising, and serving community organizations throughout his life. Robert J. Heatherly Rob Heatherly graduated from MCHS in 1998 and attended Northern Illinois University where he joined the Army ROTC program. He then received master’s degrees from Hawaii Pacific University and the U.S. Army War College. He has served in the United States Army since 2002, rising to the rank of colonel by the time of his induction as a Distinguished Graduate. He has served in a variety
of assignments, including product manager for Mobile Protected Firepower (the Army’s 2022 Program of the Year), to create an air deliverable, lightweight tank to Airborne and Light Infantry Brigade Combat Teams. He has deployed to Iraq, Kuwait, Korea, Japan and other countries. He received specialized training in space operations, counterinsurgency, and other national security strategic topics and mission sets from the National Security Agency, Central Intelligence Agency, and the U.S. Army War College. Col. Heatherly has worked closely with business leaders from the defense industry, academia, and other foreign governments to better facilitate the Army’s modernization into the future to overmatch our nation’s threats to the U.S. and its interests. He has also been active in volunteering at veteran-related events and charities and mentoring submitted photo Hi-Liter/MCN fellow service members and Col. McHenry Community High School District 156 recently honored two new names to its list of Distinguished Graduates who went on to make a difference in their communities and professions after graduation. David Lawson, Class of 1974, and Robert J. Heatherly, Class of 1998, were celebrated during the Sept. 29 homecoming football game during a special halftime presentation. The Distinguished Graduate program is an annual effort to acknowledge graduates who go above and beyond in their career fields, community service and more. Both also received a plaque, and each graduate’s photo and short biography are on display at McHenry High School buildings. Nominations open in the spring of the year and Distinguished Graduates are chosen in the spring. See the webpage for more details. “It is inspiring to read all of the applications and accomplishments each year for our amazing graduates,” said Carl Vallianatos, assistant superintendent for learning and innovation.

The pre-Halloween weekend festivities also will feature opportunities to benefit several Woodstock families recently displaced due to an Oct. 9 gas leak and explosion that leveled one home, burned another and rendered at least two others uninhabitable. “I plan to give 40 percent of my concession sales that weekend for direct assistance to those families,” said Scott
Dehn, owner of the theater at 1510 Chapel Hill Road, Lakemoor. “I felt so bad after seeing footage of the devastation there. It’s a miracle no one was hurt. County law enforcement celebrating success of police social work program After a year in operation, the McHenry County Police Social Work program is making a difference and changing lives for the better. The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office began partnering in June 2022 with 18 local law enforcement agencies to create the program, which supports police officers with full-time police social workers to help bridge the gap between law enforcement and the county’s network of social service providers. The team consists of six police social workers and a clinical supervisor who report to a Sheriff’s Office sergeant. “The program has provided valuable assistance and training to our staff, which has benefited the residents we serve by being another valuable resource we can rely on
while responding to those in crisis. This has resulted in improved services to those citizens in need, and a reduction in repeated responses,” Crystal Lake Police Chief James Black said. One of the most significant benefits has been a two-thirds decrease in the recidivism rates of people who have had police social worker involvement. In the first two quarters of the current 2023 fiscal year, the percentage of clients who had less police contact following intervention were 68% and 70%, respectively. “I’ve watched the police social workers interacting with Algonquin residents and referring them to services, and we’ve seen a decrease in our call volume to many residences after they have worked with a police social worker,”
Algonquin Police Sgt. James Sowizrol said. “The police social worker also provides valuable information to officers to use on calls to help mitigate challenges and reduce police response.” Participating police departments also benefit from the training and collaboration that have come with the program – especially smaller departments that don’t have the budgets of larger municipalities. The program allows these agencies to focus less on mental health calls and more on minimizing crime and increasing community awareness and involvement. “As a smaller agency with limited resources, this collaboration has benefited our community by allowing our department to give mental health calls the proper attention and level of service they
deserve while freeing up police officers to continue public safety and community efforts,” Marengo Police Chief Nathan Hayes said. Police social workers not only help respond to calls for service, but also follow up with clients after they have been connected with the services they are determined to need. “We’ve seen firsthand in Fox River Grove how our residents are connected to longterm support with our police social worker’s assistance,” Police Chief Eric Waitrovich said. “The follow-up by our police social worker to our residents is a force multiplier that minimizes and mitigates further police response. Residents are provided resources, phone numbers, things they can do and connections to aid in the crisis at hand – all
of which result in lasting and effective solutions.” The program was developed in cooperation with the Sheriff’s Office, the County Board and the McHenry County Mental Health Board, and is funded by these agencies and each participating jurisdiction. The program is presently housed at office space generously donated by The Community Foundation for McHenry County. “The Police Social Work Program has made great strides in connecting residents to resources. We are pleased with the success thus far and are excited for the future of the program,” Sheriff Robb Tadelman said. “We knew when we joined forces to put this program together that it would make a difference in people’s lives
that would have a positive effect across entire communities and McHenry County as a whole,” County Board Chairman Mike Buehler said. “It fused our dedicated men and women of law enforcement with McHenry County’s deep network of dedicated and caring social service agencies, and the results have been nothing short of spectacular. I can’t wait to see the positive community effect grow in the coming years.” Participating police departments include Algonquin, Bull Valley, Cary, Crystal Lake, Fox River Grove, Harvard, Johnsburg, Lakewood, Marengo, McCullom Lake, McHenry County College, the McHenry County Conservation District, Oakwood Hills, Prairie Grove, Richmond, Spring Grove, Wonder Lake and Woodstock.

Two men arrested following large, unruly party T w o Wa u k e g a n men were arrested after one threw a bottle and struck a sheriff’s deputy and another Ramon attempted Basurto to punch a Round Lake Police Officer, while sheriff ’s deputies and local police agencies were dispersing an unlaw- Jarvion Allen ful gathering. On October 22, at approximately 12:10 a.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 24500 block of West Stub Avenue, unin-
corporated Round Lake for a report of a large, unruly party. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located approximately 100 people at a home, creating a disturbance for the neighbors in the vicinity. The party hosts had everyone disburse from the home, however, the guests then flooded the neighborhood, being unruly in neighbor’s yards, drinking alcohol in the roadway, and blocking traffic with their cars. Additional sheriff’s deputies and neighboring police officers arrived to assist in dispersing the uncooperative crowd. Some of the crowd began to leave, but some continued to be disruptive and unruly. Ramon Basurto, 21, of the 100 block of North McAree Road, Waukegan, threw a bottle of beer at a sheriff’s
deputy, striking the deputy in the shoulder. He was arrested and transported to the Lake County Jail. Another individual, Jarvion Allen, 21, of the 1200 block of Elmwood Avenue, Waukegan, attempted to punch a Round Lake Police Sergeant and then fled on foot. Deputies and local police officers took him into custody after a brief foot chase. While being transported to the jail, Allen threatened to come to the deputy’s home and murder the deputy and his family. After reviewing the facts and circumstances of the case, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the charge of aggravated battery to a peace officer for Basurto. Allen was charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer and threatening a pub-
lic official. Basurto and Allen remain held in the Lake County Jail pending First Appearance Court. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
Sheriff’s deputy involved shooting under investigation
A Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy shot a man who lunged at him with a meat cleaver this afternoon. On October 18, 2023, at approximately 4:05 p.m. Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 34200 block of Barberry Court, unincorporated Round Lake, for a report of man bleeding who needed help. The 911 caller
believed her friend’s relative took his life. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found an adult male unconscious and unresponsive on a mattress in the living room of the home. There was a significant amount of blood around the man. The sheriff’s deputy immediately checked his pulse, found that he had a pulse, and started to remove pieces of the man’s clothing, to determine where his wounds were to provide aid. As the deputy was attempting life-saving efforts, the man woke up, immediately retrieved a meat cleaver that was next to him, and lunged at the deputy. The deputy, along with another person in the home immediately retreated, but the man charged after the deputy and other person with the meat
cleaver in his hand. The deputy shot the man. The deputy, along with another deputy who arrived, began life-saving measures. Paramedics, who were already nearby awaiting for the scene to be deemed safe, came inside the home and took over medical efforts. The man was transported to an area hospital in critical condition but was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving. The sheriff’s deputy involved was also transported to an area hospital for an evaluation. Per state law and sheriff’s office protocol, the Lake County Major Crime Task Force was requested to conduct an independent investigation of the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.
