Gov. JB Pritzker last week condemned the deadly attacks on Israel over the weekend by the militant group Hamas, telling those gathered outside a synagogue in Chicago’s north suburb of Glencoe Oct. 10 that Illinois “unequivocally stands” with the people of Israel. The governor, who himself is Jewish, was one of a handful of elected officials and faith leaders who spoke at the gathering. Pritzker acknowledged the militant group isn’t representative of all Palestinians—including those who live in Gaza under the de facto rule of Hamas. “There are many peace-loving Palestinians, and we must honor them,” Pritzker said. “But Hamas—Hamas is a terrorist organization. An army of murderers backed by Iran.” More than 1,000 people were killed by Hamas’ coordinated attacks on Saturday as many in Israel celebrated a Jewish holiday, with thousands more injured and some taken hostage. Among them may be a mother-daughter pair of Evanston residents, according to reporting from the Lake County News-Sun. Israel’s consul general to the Midwest, Yinam Cohen, told the crowd gathered outside of North Shore Congregation Israel that many in the Chicago area are still “waiting for news regarding their loved ones in Israel.” Israel quickly declared war and launched counterattacks on Gaza, which has been under Hamas’ control since 2007. Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 800 and wounded more than 4,000 Palestinians in the days following the initial attack. Pritzker’s address included a message of support for the Israeli military. “We pray today for the strength and safety of the men and women of the Israeli Defense Forces as they embark on this most difficult and important mission,” the governor said. “Each step of the way they should know, and the people of Israel should know, that America and Illinois unequivocally stands with them in their battle to end the ongoing Hamas attacks. We stand with Israel.” Pritzker also said he’d directed the Illinois State Police to be on alert for any security threats to synagogues and oth-
er Jewish gathering places, but he assured the crowd “there is no immediate threat.” Also at the Oct. 10 gathering was Democratic U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider, who told the crowd he was scheduled to be in Israel last week for a conference on relations between Israel and surrounding Arab nations. “We were supposed to be celebrating the idea … that Jews and Arabs belong to the land, and the idea that by embracing each other, Jews and Arabs can live together in peace,” Schneider said. “That is not the vision of Hamas. That is the vision of people who believe in peace. Hamas believes Israel should be eliminated and Jews should be murdered.” Schneider, who is a member of the Congressional Jewish Caucus, called on the federal government to provide Israel with military support,

This Talk and Tour event will be unique because it is a training event. Participants who attend this training program and pass the course evaluation will be officially recognized as “Salt Smart trained” for three years. Ringers Landscaping, like the McHenry County Division of Transportation and a growing number of public works departments and private contractors, produce their own liquid brine to apply to pavement before a snowstorm. This program will include a tour of the company’s brine making facility and equipment that helps them reduce operating costs while improving service to their customers. Board appoints McFarlane as Public Works Director The Lake County Board is pleased to announce that it has appointed Austin McFarlane as the Director for the Lake County Public Works Department. McFarlane assumes the role following more than 30 years with Lake County Public Works. He was hired in 1991 as a Laboratory Supervisor, then promoted to Operations Manager and has most recently served as the Interim Director. “Austin has led critically important initiatives that modernize our water and sewer infrastructure, improve water
quality, and increase system resiliency,” said Lake County Board Chair Sandy Hart. “We look forward to continue Austin working with McFarlane Austin on projects involving the county’s most valuable asset, our water.” The Lake County Public Works Department provides water and sanitary sewer service to about 40 percent of
Lake County’s population, primarily the unincorporated areas. The Department conducts testing, performs inspections, and regulates permits that pertain to water and sanitary sewer issues. They conduct water and sewer inspection services to ensure that residential, commercial, and industrial customers comply with public health and environmental safety standards. The Department also performs government services to protect consumers and the environment, including maintaining water and sewer assets for over

Man arrested after he drove from Ohio to meet ‘child’ for sexual purposes
Special Investigations Group in collaboration with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) conZachary S. cluded an Clemens investigation which resulted in the arrest of a man for the offense of indecent solicitation of a child. For the past several weeks, Zachary S. Clemens, 38, of the 2100 Stowmont Court, Dublin, Ohio, was communicating with an undercover detective online. The detective was posing as a girl under the age of 14. During the conversations, Clemens sent nude photos of himself, to who he believed was the young child. Clemens created a plan to drive over 300 miles, from his home state, to meet the ‘girl’ and engage her in a sexual encounter. On October 9th, he drove to Lake County to meet the ‘girl.’ When Clemens arrived, he was met by detectives with the Special Investigations Group. Clemens was arrested and transported to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. When arrested, detectives discovered he possessed a small amount of cocaine. After reviewing the facts and circumstances of the case, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges: Attempt Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse (Class 2 Felony), Indecent Solicitation of a Child (Class 3 Felony), Traveling to Meet a Minor (Class 3 Felony), Grooming (Class 4 Felony) and Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance (Class 4 Felony). Sheriff John D. Idleburg said, “Our Special Investigations Group identified and stopped another person from being able to meet a child for sexual purposes. This time, the person drove over 300 miles to try and meet who he thought was a child. We have zero tolerance for those preying on our most vulnerable and will exhaust all efforts to identify and arrest those who try.” Clemens was held in the Lake County Jail pending first appearance in court. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Man Dies in ATV Crash, Acquaintances Hide Evidence (issued 2/8/23) On February 7, 2023, at approximately 1:00 a.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the area of North Lake Shore Drive and Green-
wood Avenue, Unincorporated Spring Grove, for a report of a person down. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located a 56-yearold man of Unincorporated Spring Grove unconscious and unresponsive. The man, Glenn Luthardt, 56, was transported to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital in critical condition, where he was subsequently pronounced deceased. The initial 911 caller informed sheriff’s 911 telecommunicators that they found Luthardt lying on the ground. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located Luthardt with multiple injuries. There was no vehicle in the vicinity and no initial obvious signs he was struck by a vehicle. Sheriff’s detectives and sheriff’s crash investigators responded to the scene to further investigate. After extensive investigation, including viewing nearby video surveillance and interviewing a number of people, sheriff’s detectives determined Luthardt was drinking at a nearby bar. Before leaving the bar, he tripped and fell, which caused some injuries to his face. A short time later Luthardt left the bar on his ATV. According to a witness, he crossed Grass Lake Road onto Lake Shore Drive and accelerated at a high rate of speed. He lost control and was thrown from the ATV. The ATV landed on top of him. An acquaintance who was following Luthardt home was able to remove the ATV from his body and called for help from additional acquaintances. Knowing Luthardt was likely under the influence of alcohol and driving with a revoked driver’s license, the acquaintances removed Luthardt’s ATV from the scene, so there was no evidence he was driving. Detectives searched the area following the crash and located Luthardt’s ATV several hours later, in the backyard of a residence approximately onehalf-mile from the crash scene.

Following a thorough investigation, sheriff’s detectives and crash investigators determined Samantha JaSamantha cobson, 45, Jacobson of the 4900 block of Valley View Road, Crystal Lake, was responsible for coordinating evidence being hidden in this investigation. Investigators determined Jacobson was at a drinking establishment earlier in the evening with Luthardt. When Luthardt was leaving, Jacobson suggested he not drive, but Luthardt left on the ATV anyway. Jacobson left shortly after and observed the crash scene. She then arranged for the ATV to be removed from the scene, along with other evidence. Jacobson lied to investigators, indicating she was driving down the roadway and happened to come across Luthardt’s body in the roadway. She attempted to lead investigators into believing Luthardt was not involved in a crash. Sheriff’s investigators presented the facts and evidence to the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office who approved the charges of two counts of obstructing justice. An arrest warrant was drafted on October 6, 2023, and Jacobson was arrested by sheriff’s deputies on October 10th. Jacobson appeared in court on October 11, 2023, and was released pending trial. Her next court date is November 7, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. in courtroom T020. Sheriff John D. Idleburg added, “From the decision to operate a vehicle under the influence, to the poor decision to lie and hide evidence, this entire set of circumstances is unfortunate. I cannot stress it enough, please do not drive under the influence, the consequences – as they were in this case – can cost lives.” All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
