It’s difficult to discover that wonderful product you never knew you needed but can’t live without, it’s even more so to find the perfect gift for that hard to please person in your life. If you walk inside East Troy’s newest store, Home on the Square, there’s a good chance you’ll find both. It’s a treat to explore the items inside the approximately 1,200-square foot new home, garden and gift shop, most of which are sourced from a mixture of the East and West coasts and Wisconsin-based artists and companies. Helmed by longtime East Troy business owner JoAnn McCormack and Dan Moody, who has worked in the fashion and entertainment

on the Square industry for over 15 years, the shop is a welcome, approachable addition to the square’s retail scene. “We’re excited to be here and excited to have our doors open and have people from East Troy and surrounding communities stop in,” Moody said. Located at 2888 Main St., next to InkLink Books, Home on the Square has a little bit of everything – a solid inventory of cacti and plants, apothecary items, accessories, jewelry, home items, children’s toys and more. “We wanted to create an experience when you come in,” said Moody. “We wanted the flow to be natural and feel unassuming and comfortable.” Home on the Square plans to partner often with local creatives, artists and makers like Sarah Manke, who designs East Troy apparel that inspires people to love where they live, and Andrea Clemens of Lovelight Flowers, who will offer locally grown flower pick up at the shop. The store’s minimalist shelving allows for brands like New

LD’s BBQ has been named Business of the Year by the East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce. The Business of the Year Award recognizes business growth, community involvement and innovative efforts in the East Troy area. LD’s BBQ owner Leon Davis accepted the award at the Chamber’s 2019 Awards Night on March 26 at East Troy Brewery. Davis has made a name for LD’s BBQ, popular in southeastern Wisconsin for its ribs, smoked brisket, pulled pork and chicken and more. LD’s BBQ had another huge year in East Troy, choosing to invest locally and open a 2,900-square-foot restaurant at 2511 Main St. in the former Burger King building in East Troy. “This eye-catching expansion has hit the refresh button on a main corridor in town – another step forward in the midst of other exciting growth in East Troy,” said Vanessa Lenz, East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director. With an ever-growing menu and new dining room focused on community, the restaurant has continued to thrive and expand. “I remember interviewing Leon when he first opened a small set up in East Troy in 2013,” Lenz said. “He modestly described his love of cooking, past in the service industry and plans to start small and grow from there. Moody, who has worked for several fashion companies, including giant stores like Topshop, internet-based stores like Trunk Club and small boutiques like Baldwin, said he loves to offer local customers advice and ideas. “Having the ability to style people and make connections was something that I’ve always liked and was good at and has always been important to me,” he said.

Showcasing a mix of big city and local brands, East Troy’s newest shop, Home on the Square offers a beautiful high-low blend.

Welcome back It’s been 13 years since McCormack closed her popular coffee and gift shop Sincerely Yours in East Troy. Back then, McCormack, who now owns Spotlight Real Estate, made the shift to focus on other business ventures.

Now 25 years after opening her first shop, McCormack said it feels extra special to come back with a brand new store in the exact original location of Sincerely Yours. “It’s an updated version of Sincerely Yours,” Moody said. McCormack said the timing worked out

well for the beautifully renovated space on the square. She attributed the vitality in town and the support from residents to her interest in opening another storefront.

East Troy Railroad’s summer season includes dinner trains The East Troy Electric Railroad, Wisconsin’s last original electric railroad line, is celebrating its 112th year of operation. Passengers can pick up the train at either the East Troy Depot, Elegant Farmer or Indian Head Park in Mukwonago with regular weekend service through Nov. 3. Friday trains will run May 31 through Sept. 27. A variety of antique trolleys and interurban coaches that once whisked passengers from major cities to surrounding towns and nearby summer retreats will be featured during the season. Special event days include Beer Tasting Train on May 25 and Sept. 7, Railfan Days June 22, Chicago Day July 13, Night Photo Shoot Sept. 21 and Milwaukee Day Sept. 21. The railroad will debut its new Family Picnic Trains featuring kid-friendly food choices, bottomless soda and a stop at Jim Byrnes Memorial Park. Picnic Trains are set for May 11 and Aug. 3 (Hot Dog, Popcorn and Strawberry Shortcake Trains).

This summer, guests will get a chance to have dinner aboard the only interurban electric railroad car in North America. The dinner train cars, two retired South Shore cars built in 1927, are named “Ravenswood” and “Beverly Shores,” representing two stations along the South Shore line, where they stopped for nearly 60 years.

While LD’s is known for its mouthwatering, award-winning food, it has also has helped put East Troy on the map, attracting a growing legion of fans of its famous flavors from Milwaukee to Chicago to Indiana. Its staffers have expanded the business’s local presence as food vendors at the Chamber’s events through the years with an appearance at Food Truck Fest in 2018, with a past presence at the East Troy Cycling Classic and East Troy Bluegrass Festival, helping to build these events. “This business is an asset to the community and responsible for untold economic gain for East Troy,” Lenz said.

Volunteer of the Year

East Troy’s First Fridays Committee was recognized as the Chamber’s 2019 Volunteer of the year. “I began working with this group 3 years ago, each member looking for ways to create something that would measurably improve our community’s quality of life and showcase everything our town has to offer while boosting its local economy,” Lenz said. “We unveiled our version of that concept –East Troy’s First Fridays event series – on Friday May 6, 2016 with about 40 people in attendance. Today this event series brings together thousands in the heart of East Troy.” The rapid growth of these events indicate the growing popularity in East Troy, and it would not be possible without the work of East Troy’s First Fridays committee, Lenz said. “This group has dedicated countless hours to the Chamber in the past 3 years, working diligently to enhance entertainment in their town and bring people together with familyfriendly festival style celebrations, putting a much needed spotlight on food (local and diverse), the arts, music, children, local farmers, artisans, makers and more. “We are so grateful for their hard work and dedication for the past three years and look forward to working with them all for many more.”

Good Neighbor Award

Citizens Bank was recognized with the Chamber’s 2019 Good Neighbor Award. The Chamber Board of Directors established the award to recognize a person, organization, or company that has made a significant positive impact in the community and has worked collaboratively with the Chamber. Citizens Bank brings large groups of volunteers to help man East Troy’s events and its employees have taken on key volunteer positions for the East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce. “Whether it’s never missing a chance to brave Wisconsin’s December chill to greet children decorating trees at East Troy Village Square Park, chairing the Chamber’s annual golf outing for more years than we can count, serving on the Chamber Board or helping to launch a new series like East

Add ice after muddling, pour 2 oz Tequila into each glass along with fresh lime juice. Stir briefly. If you prefer the addition of soda, add club or white soda.

MAKES ONE COCKTAIL: 1 ½ oz good quality Bourbon (Rye Whiskey also works well) ¾ oz Campari ¾ oz good quality Sweet Vermouth Orange slice for garnish

Spice up the traditional old-fashioned with this summer spin MAKES 2 COCKTAILS: 4 oz good-quality Tequila 1 oz agave syrup Orange bitters 4 slices thinly sliced jalapeno pepper (add seeds if you want heat) 2 wedges fresh lime Juice of 2 fresh limes INSTRUCTIONS: Assemble ingredients. In the bottom of two rocks glasses, divide the agave syrup, lime wedges and jalapeno. Add two dashes orange bitters to each

CLASSIC BOULEVARDIER This cocktail is terrific for summer drinking. The same components as a Negroni but instead of gin, whiskey is used. This can easily be “batched” to simplify the process for a crowd. Multiply out the number of cocktails needed and pour into a clean bottle or serving vessel. It doesn’t need to be refrigerated. The cocktail will taste much better if quality Vermouth is used.

INSTRUCTIONS: Add ice to cocktail shaker, add the three ingredients. Stir vigorously for 30 seconds. Pour into a coupe or martini glass. Garnish with orange slice.

EAST TROY CYCLING CLASSIC The largest competitive cycling event in the United States, the Tour of America’s Dairyland, will makes a stop in East Troy as a part of the 11-day series on Friday, June 21. The East Troy Cycling Classic begins at 11:35 a.m. with nearly 10 hours of highenergy professional cycling around East Troy Village Square Park and nearby streets. The race will feature a handcycling division beginning at 5:35 p.m. East Troy’s 5th annual Slow Ride Bike Race will be at 6:10 p.m. The popular Tour de Square Kids Races will begin at 6:30 p.m. Hosted by the East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce, along with The Dennis and Janice Klumb Family Foundation, the event will feature the East Troy Farmers Market, an ESPN radio broadcast and local vendors offering a variety of food items and beer, soda and water. The race will shut down streets on the course (see map at easttroy.org), but local businesses will remain open. Parking will be available in the Chester Byrnes lot, 2031 Division St., and a golf cart shuttle will be available. Moody, a Cleveland native, who’s lived everywhere from Brooklyn to Los Angeles to London to Chicago to Kansas City, decided to make East Troy his new-found home last spring thanks to his wife Molly (McCormack) who grew up here. When they were ready to move their family back to East Troy, Moody said he and McCormack (his mother-in-law) immediately started planning to set up shop on the developing square. With Moody’s extensive retail experience and McCormack’s connection to the community, running a store together seemed like a natural choice. “I wanted to bring my experiences back to the Midwest with a sense of where I’m from but where I’ve been,” Moody said. Home on the Square held a soft opening on April 9 but its grand opening May 3 was the store’s official introduction to the community. Moody plans to share the store’s new items via Home on the Square’s artfully curated Instagram and Facebook presence, as they plan to cycle in different items regularly. “We’ll keep refreshing things, so if you see something you like, you should pick it up right away,” Moody said.

SEE A SHOW AT ALPINE VALLEY MUSIC THEATRE Alpine Valley Music Theatre, one of the largest outdoor amphitheaters in the country, has announced an exciting lineup for summer of 2019. After returning in 2018 with just a handful of shows following a one-year hiatus during its 40th anniversary season in 2017, Live Nation has detailed a string of shows, bringing the venue back to life. Dave Matthews Band will be back in East Troy on Friday, July 5 and Saturday, July 6 for the first time since 2016. Phish will return to Alpine Valley for three shows July 12-14 as part of its 26-date summer tour. Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band will make its annual appearance at Alpine Valley on Saturday, July 20. Iconic pop-rockers Hootie & The Blowfish have announced a stop in East Troy on Friday, Aug. 23 as part of its first tour in more than a decade, dubbed “Group Therapy Tour.” Hall-of-fame rock band The Who will include an East Troy show on Sunday, Sept. 8 as part of an extensive 2019 North American “Moving On!” concert tour. The East Troy Community Band will continue its free Thursday Nights on the Square summer concert series June-August. 2019 performances by the East Troy Community Band are set for June 20, July 4 (patriotic concert), July 18 and Aug. 1. Guest groups will perform on June 27 (Palmyra Eagle Community Band), July 11 (Montage with ETHS Jazz Symposium) and July 25 (Swing Nouveau Big Band). At 812 acres, the largest lake in East Troy is a favorite for boating and fishing. It has a maximum depth of 58 feet. Fish include Panfish, Largemouth Bass and Northern Pike. The public boat access site is located on Wilmer’s Landing in the Town of East Troy. No additional watercraft is permitted after the 29-space parking lot is filled.

JET SKI ON POTTER’S LAKE A 155-acre lake located in the Town of East Troy, has a maximum depth of 26 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from a public boat landing with access off County Road L. Fish include Panfish, Largemouth Bass and Northern Pike.

PICKEREL LAKE FEN A diverse alkaline fen that originates at the base of a glacial ridge from seeps and springs, located on Pickerel Lake Road.

LULU LAKE The focal point of the diverse wetland and upland communities located on County Road J is the 95-acre Lulu Lake, a 40-foot deep, hard water drainage kettle lake fed by the Mukwonago River and situated at the base of glacial deposits. Best seen by canoe via the Mukwonago River or through the channel from Eagle Spring Lake.

MORAINE STATE FOREST• KETTLE MUKWONAGO RIVER UNIT

The 970-acre former Rainbow Springs property is situated in the Mukwonago River watershed and is an area known for its outstanding resource waters, including the 35-acre Rainbow Springs Lake, varied habitats and biological diversity. Visitors can park in lots on Highway LO, County Road J or County Road E.

BEULAH BOG Located on Stringers Bridge Road, visitors can travel along Beulah Bog’s hiking trail east to catch sight of its shallow bog lake, floating mud flats, tamarack forest and wet open moat.
