Wisconsin’s last original electric railroad line, is celebrating its 111th year of operation. Passengers can pick up the train at either the East Troy Depot, Elegant Farmer or Indian Head Park in Mukwonago with regular weekend service through Nov. 4. Friday trains will run June 1 through Oct. 26. A variety of antique trolleys and interurban coaches that once whisked passengers from major cities to surrounding towns and nearby summer retreats will be featured during the season. Special event days include Beer Tasting Train on May 26 and Sept. 8, Railfan Days June 23 & 24, Chicago Day July 7, Night Photo Shoot Sept. 8 and Milwaukee Day Sept. 22. The railroad returns its awardwinning dinner train on May 19 (Burger Train), June 16 (Father’s Day), July 7 (Surf & Turf), July 21 (Family Pasta Nite), Aug. 25 (Summer Delight) and Sept. 15 (Indian Summer). Tour of America’s Dairyland returns June 22

The East Troy Cycling Classic will be part of the 2018 edition of the Tour of America’s Dairyland presented by Kwik Trip. The largest competitive cycling event in the United States, the Tour of America’s Dairyland, will make its seventh stop in East Troy on Friday, June 22. The East Troy Cycling Classic begins at 10:35 a.m. with nearly nine hours of highenergy professional cycling around the East Troy Village Square and nearby streets. The event features live music, kids race, East Troy Farmers Market, an ESPN radio broadcast and local vendors offering a variety of food items and beer, soda and water. Many surrounding businesses get in on the action with race day specials and bike themed items. The East Troy race start and finish will be on the east side of the square (2096 Church St.). The cyclists will ride laps around the half-mile course between 10:45 a.m. and 8 p.m. for timed races that range from 40 to 90 minutes. The race will shut down streets on the course, but local businesses will remain open. Parking will be available in the Chester Byrnes lot, 2031 Division St., and a golf cart shuttle will be available. Admission is free and spectators may watch the cyclists whiz by once every three minutes from anywhere on the racecourse. The title sponsor for the East Troy Cycling Classic is the Dennis and Janice Klumb Family Foundation, which put up half of the bid fees to host the race. The East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce serves as the local host, with funding for the balance of the fees donated by other local and regional sponsors. ToAD 2018, which marks its 10th anniversary, runs Thursday, June 21 through Sunday, July 1 and features criteriumstyle races daily in different Wisconsin communities. With the exception of Schlitz Park in Milwaukee, ToAD 2018 races will return to the same communities as last year. ToAD has become one of the most popular bike race series in the sport earning an outstanding reputation for delivering a worldclass race experience for both participants and spectators. In 2017, nearly 1,000 racers from more than 40 states and 15 countries participated in ToAD with an average of 450 racing daily. Overall an estimated 100,000 spectators attended races and other special race-day events in host communities.

The Tour de Square Kids Fun Races will give children the chance to compete like the pros as they pedal their two, three or four wheel bikes fast and furiously toward the finish line. The first race starts at 6 p.m. All racers must meet at the East Troy Village Municipal Parking Lot, on the corner of Church and Austin streets, by 5:45 p.m. The first 100 entries will receive goodie bags. There is no entry fee, but registration is required. Medals will be awarded to the top three places in three age categories, tricycles/ big wheels (age 4 and younger), training wheels/two wheels (ages 4-7) and two wheels only (ages 8-11). All children must wear helmets. Entry forms are available at easttroy. org or pre-register the day of the race at the Chamber information booth on the east side of East Troy Village Square Park.

President and CEO Dave Strand accepted the award at the Chamber’s annual dinner and awards night on April 5 at Ivan’s Backstage. Last year, Wisconsin Oven began gearing up for big things in 2018. The business purchased a new 140,000-square-foot facility in East Troy that doubled its manufacturing floor space to allow for the production of composite materials in the automotive and aerospace industries. Wisconsin Oven’s massive facilities have gained them a competitive edge, allowing the company to build some of the largest ovens in the industry. The company, which serves a wide range of industries, is pursuing three new patents for equipment used in the aerospace industry. Aerospace now represents about 40 percent of its business and it has also done well with its products used in the production of commercial airliners. “Everything from airplane fuselages and components for rockets destined for space travel and the planet Mars create opportunities for our 45-year-old company,” said Strand. Wisconsin Oven Corporation has made critical moves to become a leader in the industry, developing new technology, partnering with the nation’s top brands and spreading its team around the country. “Our championship culture embodies a theme of work hard, play hard and give back,” said Strand. “It’s not what you got, but what you give.” Supporting the East Troy area community through giving has been a cornerstone of Wisconsin Oven since the company was founded in 1973. This company has been a 10- year Chairman Level Corporate Partner of the Chamber and gives $30,000 back to the community each year, including a $10,000 East Troy High School scholarship. Wisconsin Oven’s 165 employees, many from East Troy and the surrounding area, have also partnered with the United Way of Walworth County. Employees alone have donated $100,000 over the last six years. The company rewards contributors that give one dollar a week a day of vacation. Employees that donate $5 per week are eligible for a drawing for an additional week of vacation. The employees goal for 2018 is to surpass $25,000 in donations.
Volunteer of the Year JoAnn McCormack of Spotlight Real Estate was recognized as the Chamber’s 2018 Volunteer of the year. McCormack has been giving back to the East Troy community for about 30 years and always prefers doing things quietly without recognition. For the past five years, McCormack has assisted with every Chamber event without fail, volunteering, donating supplies & sponsoring programming. She was a founding member of East Troy’s First Fridays Committee and has played a crucial role in launching this popular program, now gearing up for year three. McCormack’s generosity is endless. In addition to working with various charitable organizations, she drives elderly friends to appointments, brings them food, volunteers for other clubs, all on top of running her local real estate business.
Good Neighbor Award The East Troy Lions Club was recognized with the Chamber’s 2018 Good Neighbor Award. The Chamber Board of Directors established the award to recognize a person, organization, or company that has made a significant positive impact in the community and has worked collaboratively with the Chamber. For over 70 years, the East Troy Lions Club has financially aided local organizations, helped to fund an assortment of projects and facilitated events to strengthen the East Troy community. The Lions are best known for their Fourth of July Festival, which has been an East Troy staple and big tourist draw since 1938. But this group has also created a legacy in East Troy with their donations and assistance. Some of the bleachers at East Troy High School, the building known as East Troy Library, the drinking fountain and the existing speaker system at East Troy Village Square Park and bathrooms at Booth Lake Memorial Park were all brought to you by
Senior Apartments celebrate 20 years in East Troy
Twenty years ago, the senior population in East Troy was waiting for a place to call home. BY Vanessa Lenz At the time, the Kiwanis Club took on the monumental EAST TROY CHAMBER task of creating a plan of action to push forward with EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR building a hub for senior housing and programming. Today, the men and women and families who continue to benefit from the work of the Kiwanis are ready to honor the milestone. The Heritage will celebrate its 20th anniversary on July 14 with a giant family picnic. Property manager Mary Ann Glowinski, who has been working at the popular senior apartment complex since it opened, said she has loved every minute of it. “I love my job,” she said. “It’s never the same. It’s always something different. I have been with the Heritage for nearly 20 years and it has been an amazing adventure.” Glowinski said she enjoys all of the residents’ stories and has so many great memories from her experience there. The complex provides residents with a variety of onsite events and activities and Glowinski said the residents and staff, including Jeff Fornear, are like family. “We usually get a great turnout,” she said. “The more you can socialize and keep our residents busy and active, the longer they live and the See HERITAGE, Page 9 happier they are.”

Wisconsin Oven-U to provide real-world experience in trades Wisconsin Oven Corporation recently announced the opening of its training center for skilled trades. The partnership with Gateway Technical Institute and area high schools will launch by June 1. “The training will provide students with a credited course that may be transferred to Gateway for further education and degrees,” said Dave Strand, President & CEO of Wisconsin Oven Corporation. “The unique part of this training center is that the students will actually receive a paycheck while being trained. If they opt not to continue their education they may be eligible for hire full time at Wisconsin Oven.” Training is provided by experienced Wisconsin Oven Corporation production personnel and engineers, as well as area experts.

In the 12 years since she planted her first seeds as an intern at Michael Fields Agricultural Institute, Clemens has created a name for herself in the region centering her business on eye-catching floral designs and work to promote sustainability. Known for welcoming her East Troy Farmers Market customers with a warm smile and often times a hug, one only needs to spend 30 seconds with Clemens when she’s tending to her flowers to realize she has found her calling. “It’s so special to be able to grow and design flowers for somebody,” Clemens said. Clemens said she is able to do more now that her son Cedar, almost 10, and daughter Ruby, 8, are older and can help out. Last year she expanded her petite flower farm operation, which specializes in growing unique, heirloom varieties of flowers and herbs, to two locations in East Troy. She rents 2 acres from the Yggdrasil Land Foundation, which collectively has 1,100 acres that are preserved for organic and biodynamic farmers. The other property, located at Michael Fields, is certified organic. “I want to connect with my community and with Michael Fields in particular,” she said of her plans to offer hands-on workshops, field days and design classes at the property this summer. “The goal to get the community together,” she said. “My mission is to educate people so they feel confident growing their own gardens.”
Spreading the Lovelight
The growing seed was planted in Clemens indirectly when she was young. Her parents weren’t involved in agriculture, but always taught her to be a steward of the earth. While working at a flower shop in Shorewood at 19, Clemens was shocked to learn how far the flowers she touched had traveled to get to Wisconsin and just how much they had to be sprayed with chemicals to keep them looking nice. “One day a farmer from Wisconsin came and brought sunflowers in and that just really peaked my interest and made me ask: ‘Where do our flowers come from?’” Clemens said. After doing research on the small number of flowers grown domestically, she yearned to get to work in the fields to grow her own

local blooms. Since she grew up in East Troy until 12 when her family moved to Milwaukee, Clemens jumped at the chance to return home as an intern at MFAI in 2005. “My first year, I focused a lot on the cut flower growing with my mentor Janet Gamble and I was able to stay as a second year intern and start my first business in 2006. It was called EarthAngel and I had 65 CSAs.” Clemens has since built her business as a full-time flower farmer from the ground up. She continues to allow her customers to purchase locally-grown bouquets June 1- September through community-supported agriculture. With CSAs, customers pay for their fresh cut weekly or monthly bouquets in advance, giving funding for the growing season.
(Small bouquet cost is $15 and large bouquet cost is $25.) “It’s kind of an investment in the business for people,” she said. In addition to CSAs, Clemens started to create floral arrangements for weddings, increasing demand for Lovelight Flowers. “I’ve always been an artist and being able to express my art and my feelings through a piece of floral art is a really cool medium to use. It really is a seed to vase design,” she said. Clemens’ passion for both sustainable growth and East Troy radiates through everything she does. “We compost our garden scraps, cover crop our fields and only sell our flowers within 150 miles of the farm,” she said. Glowinski recalled the day three sons moved their mother into her new apartment several years ago. “They told me ‘My mom’s never going to talk to people.’ It was cute because a month after she moved in, they asked ‘What did you to do our mother? She is always out of her room socializing,” Glowinski said. Karen Conrad, a Booth Lake resident and former East Troy postmaster, moved to The Heritage to have more people around her. “I feel like living here is like living in a little community,” Conrad said. “I feel secure. I feel safe and don’t have to go far to find friends.” Sharon Denman moved to the The Heritage from Lindenhurst, Ill. in November of 2017 and said she loves her new home. “Security is number one. Everyone here makes you feel very welcome and I’m a quiet person so I need that,” Denman explained.
