Four in five Americans say being around water relaxes them, and 72 percent feel healthier after spending time on the water, according to a Discover Boating survey. The lake beckons Gage offers tips for getting boats back on the water By Heather Ruenz STAFF WRITER
The top priority in preparation for a safe boating season this spring and summer is preventative maintenance, according to service staff at Gage Marine. “Preventative maintenance is No. 1, such as oil changes, engine tune-ups, servicing the drive and changing the impeller if needed. The impeller cools the engine when it’s running,” said Matt Oglesby, marine services manager at Gage Marine. In the spring, in addition to maintenance Oglesby said activating a boat – after it’s been winterized – is necessary to get it ready for boating season. “One thing we do with every boat after maintenance and activation is a lake test with a certified technician to make sure everything is operating as it should and is safe,” Oglesby said. The lake test consists of watching for water leaks on the engine and hoses, he said. Included in the activation is checking all the 12-volt accessories such as navigation lights, the horn, the bilge pump and bilge blower. “It’s all about people being safe on the water,” Oglesby said. Though not essential to a boat operating properly, he said taking care of cosmetic issues not only makes the boat look better but can make it last longer. “People can wax it, shampoo the carpets and use a vinyl cleaner for the inside,” Oglesby said. “The lakes in this area also leave water spots, and white vinegar is good for removing those.” Boats that have bottom paint and stay in the water also need to be painted periodically, he said, because that protects the hull and deteriorates over time. Gage Marine also stores and maintains sailboats, with much of the work similar to what’s done on powerboats, said Jim Molick, assistant service manager. “Where it’s different is the masts have to be put up and the sails put on,” Molick said. “We do that on the lakefront and will put in

new sails and new lines and make sure everything is secure.” Molick said some customers take care of those things themselves, but Gage handles almost all of the rigging. The service staff at Gage Marine is willing to teach customers how to take care of maintenance tasks on their boats, and Oglesby said September is a good time of year for that.

In addition to what Oglesby referred to as “a la carte” maintenance – smaller jobs, as needed – Gage Marine offers two maintenance plans: One includes the mechanical maintenance and the second also includes cosmetic maintenance. Gage also services boat trailers, including inspecting the brakes and bearings, lights, bunks or rollers, and the hitch and latch. “Those things are important, not only legally like the tail and brake lights, but also for safety reasons,” Oglesby said. The canvas cover is another key item in keeping the boat in good shape, he said. “It keeps the water out of the boat and helps prevent mold and mildew while keeping the sun off the upholstery,” Oglesby said. “A boat canvas will usually last about six to 10 years, depending on the color of the canvas and where the boat is located. But if it’s outside all year, a canvas might only last a few years.” Staff at Gage Marine will make service calls to boaters on the water or at their personal dock if need be. “We’ll go out and help with lighter mechanical work, like changing a battery, but if it’s something major we tow it back to our shop,” Molick said. Gage Marine also helps get wood boats in the water – which is an entirely different process than other boats, particularly the older models. “There is no bare wood, so the elements can’t touch it,” Oglesby said. “The engine is similar, but the boats have to be stored in the winter in proper humidity

conditions. “In the spring, some wood boats need to be soaked in the water so the wood can swell back up. It can take one day up to a week,” Molick added. “One of the worst things would be to launch a boat that needed to be soaked because it’ll probably sink,” Oglesby said. Oglesby and Molick recommend that boat owners take their watercraft to dealers authorized to work on the type of engine the boat has to ensure maintenance and repairs are done properly. The engines serviced by Gage include outboards by Mercury, Evinrude and Yamaha; inboard/ outboards by Volvo Penta and MerCruiser; and inboards by Ilmor and Indmar. Gage sells Boston Whaler, Bennington, Mastercraft,
Chris Craft and Monterey boats. The final tip Oglesby and Molick offered is a reminder to have the proper safety equipment onboard, including a working fire extinguisher, a life jacket for each person and an approved, throwable device. “The goal is to make sure customers have a fun, safe season,” Molick said. “And make memories for a lifetime,” Oglesby added.

website. In 1916, the cruise line arm of Gage Marine purchased property in Williams Bay as a service and winter storage facility for its fleet. Soon, owners began bringing their boats in for service. In 1958, the Gage family bought the excursion business and kicked the marina facility into high gear. In the 1960s, the company introduced the first indoor storage facility in the area, and about a decade later it brought the only travel lift to the lake. Gage Marine has two locations – 1 Leichty Drive in Williams Bay and 5167 Wisconsin Highway 50, Delavan. The latter includes the service department. San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Royal Opera House and Paris Opera. He supports new works and has created roles in 21st century operas most recently collaborating with teams at the Pittsburgh Opera, with Beth Morrison Projects and with some of today’s leading and cutting-edge composers.

Events for the family include Ralph’s World at 4 p.m. July 29 and a community showcase with the
Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra at 4 p.m. June 24. Ralph’s World features indie rocker Ralph Covert and his band with high-energy tunes and a silly atmosphere. Covert transforms his former band’s original songs with fun, age-appropriate lyrics that will have the kids dancing and laughing. Before venturing into the kidfriendly music circuit, Covert was a member of the Chicago-based rock ‘n’ roll band the Bad Examples. In addition to making music and touring his live children’s show,
Covert is a songwriter, playwright and children’s book author. The Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra will present an afternoon of movie music for the entire family. The orchestra performs the scores to award-winning films such as “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Forrest Gump,” “Superman,” “Lord of the Rings,” “Frozen,” “Gladiator” and “Star Wars.” Now in its 18th season, the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra, under the leadership of music director David Anderson and concertmaster
Lisa Gauslow, boasts musicians from southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

All events are performed in the Ferro Pavilion on the campus of George Williams College of Aurora University in Williams Bay. Performances take place rain or shine.
