Alcohol myth or fact?
MYTH: Beer is less intoxicating than wine or distilled liquor. FACT: One 12-ounce beer contains the same amount of alcohol as 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor. MYTH: A cold shower, coffee, physical activity, or fresh air will sober you up. FACT: Cold showers and coffee will only produce a clean, wide-awake drunk. Only your liver can detoxify alcohol, and only time can sober you up. MYTH: A shot of brandy or whiskey will warm you up. FACT: In moderate amounts, alcohol dilates the blood vessels close to the skin giving a deceptive “glow” of warmth. In fact, the dilated blood vessels reduce your body’s ability to guard against heat loss. Source: BoatUS Foundation for Safety and Clean Water.

A few years ago, BoatUS received a surprising letter. The writer described a Memorial Day weekend getaway on a Florida lake with five friends. The group all went out on the boat, drank some beer, and had some snacks before visiting a bar that evening where they had
some more drinks. When they left the bar, it was dark and they were all singing and laughing as the boat zoomed back across the lake. The next thing the letter writer remembered was waking up in a hospital, his jaw wired shut, having been unconscious

for days. One of the friends from the boat visited him in the hospital that day and told him that, on the way back, they had struck an unlit dock. One of the passengers, she said, had broken his back, crippling him. Another had a serious brain injury. Sadly, another passenger died of his injuries. The letter writer was the owner and operator of the boat that night and was charged with boating under the influence as well as manslaughter. BoatUS has long warned of the dangers of drinking and boating, and the letter really got our attention after we realized it came from the Florida State Prison where the writer had been sentenced to several years. “Who would have thought going boating and having some drinks would have led to this?” he wrote. “We were on a boat, not in a car, no one had to drive, and there was almost no one else on the lake that night. But I will have this grief, sorrow, and profound regrets the rest of my life.” This tragic story, unfortunately, is too common. According to the latest U.S. Coast Guard statistics, alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents. Where the primary cause was known, it was listed as the leading factor in 19% of deaths. And alcohol use ranks as one of the top five primary contributing factors in accidents. Because most minor accidents aren’t reported to the Coast Guard, it’s hard to say how many dock bruises, falls, and aggressive boating incidents are related to alcohol, but it’s also likely to be in the top five.
to these stressors produce a kind of a fatigue, or “boater’s hypnosis,” which slows reaction time almost as much as if you were legally drunk. Adding alcohol intensifies the effects, and each drink multiplies your accident risk. Drinking alcohol also deteriorates cognitive abilities and judgment, which makes it harder to process information, assess situations, and make good choices. Balance and coordination are impaired, and reaction time increased. Alcohol causes decreased peripheral and night vision as well as depth perception and makes it harder to distinguish colors, particularly the all-important red and green of boat navigation lights and aids to navigation. An extra risk factor: Most boaters don’t have the benefit of operating a boat every day as they do with the family car and are much less experienced driving a boat and less able to react appropriately and quickly to a potential accident.
Inebriated passengers at risk
Designated drivers are a great idea for cars but not so much for boats. Unlike a car, where you can fasten passengers’ seat belts and drive them home, passengers on a boat, while you’re at the helm, are free to roam about and even have more drinks. BoatUS Marine Insurance claims files have numerous instances of passengers who were injured when they fell onboard, or were injured or even drowned after falling overboard after drinking. Every passenger who is drinking is a significant safety issue, and a sober skipper may not be able to keep a sharp eye on inebriated passengers. Alcohol dangers The Coast Guard and every state have Most people know that alcohol affects laws that make it illegal to boat while you’re judgment, vision, balance, and coordination, impaired, and penalties continue to increase. Most states have standards for intoxication which greatly increase the likelihood of that match the state’s highway laws for accidents. The Coast Guard says that in operating a motor vehicle, which is typically alcohol-related fatalities, more than half a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or the victims capsized their boats or went greater. Penalties can and do include large overboard. But what you might not know is fines, suspension, or revocation of boat that a boater is even more likely to become operator privileges, and jail terms. impaired than a driver of a car. The BoatUS Foundation for Safety Stressors, such as exposure to noise, and Clean Water is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit vibration, sun, glare, wind, and the motion of the water affect our skills when we drive a organization dedicated to keeping boating boat. Research shows that hours of exposure safe and clean.

The science is clear – boating is good for your health and mind. Get out there, as soon and as often as you can. The water, and reduced stress, are awaiting you.
STOCK PHOTO The Breeze
Boating is good for your health and mind As the coronavirus pandemic continued to weigh on the world, the former director of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention had a simple message for Americans: get outside. “Enjoy nature,” Tom Frieden said. “It’s good for us, and it has very low risk of spreading the virus.” Everyone from the former Food and Drug Administration commissioner to health experts from Harvard University echoed Frieden’s comment, saying research continues to show that outdoor activities – including boating – are a much better way of staying safe from the virus than any type of indoor activity. The research is why boat ramps and marinas were among the first public spaces and businesses to reopen following the initial COVID-19 shutdowns. Even in hardest-hit states in the Northeast, officials determined that getting out on a boat could be done safely while other recreations like golf remained off-limits. “Boating or paddling can provide a refreshing outdoor escape during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Peter Francis, boating division director for the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Being able to go boating during the pandemic – or at any time, really – is great news, because studies also show that being on or near the water is a boon for psychological health. And who among us couldn’t use a mood booster now and again?
WATER IS HEALING In October 2019, researchers at the University of Exeter Medical School in the United Kingdom published a study showing that people who live near the ocean are 22 percent less likely to report depression and anxiety symptoms than people who stay inland. The beneficial effects of “blue health” – interacting with bodies of water – were especially high among lower-income households. The British study followed a Canadian study in 2018 showing that people living closer to the water lowered their risk of mortality by as much as 17 percent. The “protective effects” of being near bodies of water were especially noteworthy among women and older adults. In fact, just the sounds of bodies of water can help to reduce stress, according to a 2013 study. Get yourself within earshot of a lake, river or ocean, and you can immediately feel better. IGNITING YOUR ‘BLUE MIND’ Wallace J. Nichols, the author of Blue Mind, knows all of this information well. His bestselling book looks at the scientific reasons why being in, on or under the water can make us happier and healthier. “Simply the mere sight and sound of water promotes wellness by lowering cortisol, increasing serotonin, and inducing relaxation,” Nichols said. In fact, he says, when it comes to reducing stress, being on a boat can be considered a type of medicine.
“Blue mind is when we disconnect and logout,” Nichols continued. “We move away from the screens and we get out on the water, and leave all of that technology and information behind. We give our brains a break—and our brains love that.” THE POWER OF SUNLIGHT In late-April, during the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the Department of Homeland Security also released a study related to the life cycle of the virus on non-living surfaces. The study detailed the anticipated times the virus can survive on surfaces given variations in temperature, humidity, and exposure to sunlight.
In the end, the results concluded that the virus would die in about two minutes at a temperature above 70 degrees Fahrenheit with relative humidity at 80% and direct exposure to sunlight, which is good news for boaters. Particularly those interested in alternatives to boat ownership like boat rentals, peer-to-peer boat sharing, and boat clubs, this type of science shows that any concerns about exposure from prior renters in addition to new cleaning guidelines boat clubs and rentals are following should be minimal. With an abundance of lakes – and, accordingly, beaches – the Geneva Lakes area boasts a wealth of sun, sand and cooling breezes on summer days. Whether it’s the large popular beaches on Geneva Lake – Riviera or Fontana – or the more secluded stretches of sand found on Twin Lakes in Kenosha County or Browns Lake in Burlington, the choices are many. Because of changing conditions due to coronavirus, readers are advised to verify a particular beach is open before planning an outing. Here’s your guide to some of the area’s beaches:
grills, glass, or alcohol. Guards are on duty from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Daily rates are $10 for those 12 and older and $5 for ages 6-11. Changing rooms are available.
DELAVAN
In the Town of Delavan, Community Park, 1220 South Shore Drive, (262) 7402335, has a large playground, including a volleyball court, horseshoe pit, and picnic area but the swimming beach is small. The swimming area is delineated to keep swimmers from going out of the area because of underwater weeds. Daily rates for visitors are available.
LAKE GENEVA
Lance Park Beach along Main Street on Lake Mary in the Village of Twin Lakes is perhaps the most popular. The beach is small, but it features a collar of green grass behind it. No lifeguards are on duty so swimming is at your own risk. There is plenty of parking and no admission fee.
BURLINGTON
Fischer Park on Browns Lake in Burlington, 30326 Durand Avenue, (262) 763-8446, features a wide, sandy beach. The park is well maintained. Lifeguards are on duty from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. each day during the swimming season. Picnic tables encourage visitors to spend the day and enjoy a picnic lunch. There is a $2 per person fee during the swimming season.

Boating during COVID-19
GENEVA LAKES BREEZE • JULY 2020 • PAGE 7
TIPS FOR SAFE SOCIAL DISTANCING
Boating safety is always – always – a critical consideration whenever you push off the dock, but with all the recent issues regarding COVID-19, many people are wondering if boating is considered a safe social distancing practice. As boaters everywhere do their best to navigate these uncharted waters, we’ll do our best to serve as a reliable resource in answering many of your questions about boating during the coronavirus – from navigating local boating restrictions and boat ramp closures in your area, to following best practices for social distancing on the water. Social distancing while boating Is boating a safe social distancing activity? The short answer is yes, but the long answer is a bit more involved. First and foremost, all the usual rules apply: • Limit the people aboard to those family members you share your home with, period – no guests; • Don’t raft up with other boats or pull up onto a beach close to another boat, as that could put you in close proximity with the occupants; • Be careful to maintain a safe distance from others when doing things like loading up at the marina or fueling the boat; • After doing anything that requires touching an item someone else may have touched, like a marina gate lock or a fuel pump, disinfect by washing your hands or using a hand sanitizer as soon as possible; and • Finally, to maintain the highest level of safety pack your gear and supplies ahead of time and don’t plan to stop at a store on the way to the marina or launch ramp, as you usually might. Where can I go boating? Every state and in many cases different municipalities or counties have different regulations in place as to where you can launch a boat during this time of crisis. And these rules are changing by the day. Discover Boating strongly recommends checking on the legalities before making any trips. One resource you may want to use is the Public Water Access Guide Tool at discoverboating.com, which can help you discover nearby locations to go boating in your local community by using the interactive map. All you have to do is select your state to see the latest updates from state officials regarding public water access points, boat landings, and ramps. Another handy resource can be found at the US Fish & Wildlife Service: State By State Closures, which lists the U.S. Fish & Wildlife locations including many with access points, and their current status is updated daily. Many are asking if they will receive assistance with mechanical issues while boating during the COVID-19 crisis? This is a question that may weigh heavily on a lot of people’s minds, since it’s another way your safety may be impacted out on the water. On-the-water towing assistance from major fleets like TowBoatUS and Sea Tow remain active and able to respond. In addition, search and rescue and
emergency personal from the U.S. Coast Guard and most state agencies also remain active. However, because the constantly changing nature of this emergency Discover Boating highly recommends double-checking on all of the above, before taking out your boat. Disinfecting the boat Like many solid surfaces, the parts of your boat could temporarily house the COVID-19 virus. As long as you keep boating between you and your family, your boat in and of itself shouldn’t be any problem. But, what if you want to be extra cautious and disinfect your boat? In that case, go by the Centers for Disease Control recommendations. That means disinfecting surfaces with EPA-approved disinfectants, however, you should remember that some of the approved disinfectants (like bleach or acids) can harm some of the surfaces of a boat. The canvass and vinyls are particularly subject to damage or discoloration, if disinfecting chemicals are left on their surfaces. So, after disinfecting be sure to give your boat a thorough wash-down. The most important thing overall is simply to maintain a clean boat; see the How to Clean a Boat Guide at Discover Boating to keep things ship-shape. For more information, visit the Discover Boating website. Be careful to maintain social distancing practices while boating this summer. Then cast off those lines and feel the wind in your hair and enjoy the sunshine. STOCK PHOTO The Breeze
