Many towns, especially those with reputations for fishing, host free family fishing events. These events give parents an opportunity to see if their kids enjoy fishing before they start buying them gear.
How to make the most of kids’ first angling experience
Starting simple Any fisherman would love to snag a trophy fish such as a largemouth bass on his or her first trip. And while that’s possible, it’s unlikely, especially for youngsters. Such fish tend to be difficult to catch, even for seasoned fishermen. When taking kids fishing for the first time, fish for something that’s somewhat simple to catch and capable of being caught throughout the day. If you aren’t familiar with your local rivers or lakes, visit a local outdoors store and ask for advice about which local bodies of water are home to fish that kids might be able to snag. Though it’s not imperative that kids catch a fish on their first trip, doing so might make them more enthusiastic about their next trip.
Having fun Don’t make the day all about catching fish, as even the most seasoned fishermen have their off days when nothing is biting. If the focus is on catching fish, kids might grow discouraged and not want to come back if they don’t catch anything on their first trip. Focus on the fun everyone is having rather than the fish they are (or aren’t) catching. Some youngsters might just be thrilled to spend a day out on the water with their parents. Encourage that enthusiasm and kids are more likely to remember their first fishing trips fondly.

Boating is a rewarding hobby that can be great for people from all walks of life. Many people buy a boat because they already have a passion for fishing and want their own vessel to take out on the water. Others may buy a boat because they like the challenge posed by sailing, a demanding yet rewarding hobby. According to Grow Boating, a marine industry organization that aims to generate awareness and interest in boating, retail sales of new boats, marine engines and marine accessories in the United States totaled $20.1 billion in 2017. That marked a 9.5 percent increase from the year prior, highlighting the growing popularity of boating. In fact, Grow Boating notes that 141.6 million Americans went boating in 2016.
The fun of boating compels many people to buy their own boats. For first-timers, buying a boat can be both exciting and confusing. Prospective buyers must decide on everything from the type of vessel they want to the size of the boat to where to store it when they’re not out on the water. Such decisions can make the process of buying a boat somewhat intimidating. However, the following tips might facilitate the process of buying a boat for the first time.
ASSESS YOUR SKILLS
An honest assessment of your skills will help you determine if the time is right to buy a boat. There’s no shame in waiting to buy a boat until you become more comfortable navigating it. Boating schools can be great resources for novices, teaching them the ins and outs of boating. The United States Coast Guard notes that boating safety courses are offered throughout the country for all types of recreational boaters.

Boaters tend to be passionate about boating, and many are willing to offer advice to novices about boats that may suit their needs. Local marinas can be great resources for first-time boat buyers.

57TH VENETIAN FESTIVAL OFFERS SPECTACULAR SIGHTS AND SOUNDS The Lake Geneva Jaycees will host the 57th annual Venetian Festival Aug. 14 through 18. The festival takes place at Flat Iron, Library and Seminary Parks in downtown Lake Geneva. Venetian Festival features a weekend of family entertainment including a craft fair, carnival, water ski show and local cuisine including a brat stand and beer tent. The celebration is capped off on Sunday, Aug. 18, with a traditional Venetian-style lighted boat parade followed by the area’s largest fireworks display high above Geneva Lake. The Lake Geneva Jaycees Entertainment Pavilion, which is located in Flat Iron Park, will be the center of the live music shows. The Entertainment Pavilion is open Wednesday through Friday from 5 p.m. to midnight and Saturday and Sunday noon to Midnight. People must be 21 to enter. Since then it has been the banner event for the Lake Geneva Jaycees Chapter for nearly six decades. It
represents the largest revenue generator for the club. The net profits go back into the local community. As Venetian Festival has grown over the years, so have the donations from the Jaycees. EVERYONE NEEDS A LIFE JACKET Most drowning victims aren’t wearing a PFD
A life jacket (or personal flotation device) is the single most important piece of equipment on your boat and the most important consideration should be size. More than two-thirds of all boating fatalities are drowning incidents and 90 percent of drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket. So buy a life jacket that you will wear ... it could save your life. In Wisconsin, there is no state law, so boaters must abide by federal regulation, which requires that all children younger than 13 wear a PFD, while on federal waterways in this state. To determine if the waterway where you boat is a federal waterway, contact your state boating agency. If a child is in a cabin or below deck a PFD is not required.
APPROVED PFD STYLES
United States Coast Guard approved PFDs must fit properly and be in good condition. There several types of traditional foam flotation devices as well as new inflatable life jackets. Each is designed for different boating activities and water conditions and each has its own maximum buoyancy, performance level, and limitations. You should choose your life jacket based on your boating

activities and conditions. Life jackets must be U.S. Coast Guard-approved in order to meet carriage requirements.
REQUIREMENTS FOR LIFE JACKETS
There must be a properly fitting life jacket for each and every person aboard a recreational vessel. Life jackets must be Coast Guard-approved, in serviceable condition and the appropriate size for the intended user. Obviously, they are most effective when worn.
