Spending time in and around water is a favorite pastime for adults and children. Swimming, boating, running through sprinklers, and soaking in a nice warm tub can be great ways to relax and have fun. Even though water play can be exciting, it also can be dangerous. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children between the ages of one and four and the fifth leading cause of accidental death overall in the United States, offers UCI Health. Calm rivers can hide swift currents, rocks and tree branches. Ocean rip tides and rough waves can confound even excellent swimmers. Lake waters can be extremely cold, even in summer, making it challenging for a person to stay afloat and avoid hypothermia. It is essential for everyone to play it safe when in and around water. Here are nine ways to do just that.
Avoid swimming or boating in high 1. running water, making sure to always check conditions before starting.
Never dive or jump into unfamiliar 2. or shallow water, advises Seattle Children’s Hospital.

am Veith, with a rod and reel in his hands, finds fishing as a form of therapy and a way to explore nature. Veith, of Salem, discovers his tranquil moments mostly on the waters of Geneva and Delavan lakes. “Whenever life gets tough, just being on the water and getting outdoors is my kind of therapy,” said Veith. “It is important for me to get out enjoy nature. Being on the water is just my favorite thing.” Veith has also ventured out on Eagle Lake in Racine County along with many lakes in Kenosha County, including Silver and Paddock lakes. Additionally, when visiting his in-laws in Illinois, he typically jumps aboard a boat on the Chain O’Lakes. “I don’t really discriminate, I will fish up in Eagle Lake in Racine County once in awhile, I will fish in Twin Lakes,” he said. “If there is a good opportunity to get out for an hour or two, I just stay really close to home like Silver Lake or Paddock Lake.”
Promoting social distancing Veith said he has remained within a half hour of his residence because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has prompted health officials to urge people to maintain social distancing. The Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, a national nonprofit organization with a mission to increase participation in fishing, indicates fishing is an ideal activity because 6-foot social distancing guidelines is already happening. Stephanie Vatalaro, senior vice president for marketing and communications of the foundation, outlined many reasons fishing is a natural fit for social distancing to the Associated Press. “You don’t want to be close,” Vatalaro said. “You’re going to tangle your lines, get your equipment mixed up. Fishing is a sport that lends itself to social distancing for sure.” The Associated Press says the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation’s website, takemefishing.org, has seen a 15% increase in traffic over the past month. Its website offers an interactive map showing the status, and any restrictions, in every state during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We absolutely believe fishing, if you can do it right now, it’s great for mental health, stress relief, connecting with your family, creating memories, but health and safety is No. 1,” Vatalaro said. “One of the messages we’ll hold onto is maybe find a place you haven’t been to before, maybe close to home so you’re not in the public.” For Veith, using lakes closer to his

home brings benefits such as learning new features of each body of water, while staying safe. “Right now, with corona, it is just kind of crazy so I am trying to stay within a half hour from my house,” he said. “I am not trying to go too far. It is usually an opportunity to learn these local lakes a little bit better.” Paul Vollmer, 36, a lifelong Mukwonago resident, has been fishing at nearby waterways since he was a child. He, like Veith, finds fishing relaxing and often visits the Fox River and Tichigan Lake. “I enjoy fishing the Fox River and Tichigan Lake because of the multiple species of fish in the lake and it is a great hatchery for fish,” he said, noting he also uses Pewaukee Lake for muskies and big bass. While Vollmer describes himself as a recreational fisherman, he has participated in some area tournaments, primarily focusing on musky and bass. “It is relaxing and a fun sport,” Vollmer said. Vollmer concurred with Vatalaro’s statement about fishing as an activity promoting social distancing. “I have not made any changes with what’s going on because I always fish out of my boat,” he said.
Helping others Fishing typically allows experienced anglers an opportunity to help others learn the sport, according to Veith. Veith encourages newcomers to ask for help because he and others are always
willing to offer suggestions. “You just have to start asking people around what the basics are. Don’t be afraid to ask for a little help,” he said. “When somebody is just getting into the sport, it is a great thing for all us to try to help someone catch a fish and see them enjoy the excitement. A lot of times for me, it is better seeing other people catch a fish than me catching a fish myself.” Veith, 35, a commercial insurance broker, recently decided to share his passion for fishing through a relatively new program called “Fun Fishing Guide Service.” The fishing guide service, he said, primarily looks to serve veterans and donate fishing trips to help charities with fundraising. “It is just a part-time thing for me. It is
not something I am trying to make a ton of money on. It is just something I am doing to give back to veterans,” he said. “I donate some trips to charities to help them raise money.” While the service is not listed as a nonprofit organization, at least not yet, Veith said it has worked to support many other charities. The charities, according to its website, include the Bryon Riesch Paralysis Foundation, Northern Illinois Police K-9 Memorial as well as Walleyes Unlimited USA. “Anything I can do to help,” said Veith, indicating he has seen veterans experience joy during his trips. “They had such a great time, so that is one of my main focuses, taking veterans out,” he said. “My goal is just to get vets out and donate some trips for charity.” People can visit his website for more information at www.funfishin.org.
Opening weekend Opening day for Wisconsin fishing was on May 2, which according to the state Department of Natural Resources, is the traditional start of the season. “Hook and line fishing for many fish species on many Wisconsin waters begins on that day,” the DNR states. “However, to better manage Wisconsin fisheries, season dates are often specific to the species of fish as well as the water body.” For the latest guidelines, including how to obtain a fishing license, visit the Department of Natural Resources website at www.dnr.wi.gov.

Meet the ‘Babes’ of boat detailing Local women join forces to create Barnacle Babes service

othing says summer more than the return of boats to the waters of area lakes. Each spring as the days get warmer, more boats appear on the water with boat owners and their families close behind to enjoy their time on the lake. Unfortunately boat maintenance takes up a good part of the recreational time many people have to enjoy the time on their boats. When longtime friends Emily Zugay and Erika Price were looking at possible business ideas, they knew they wanted to do something that would keep them outside preferably along the waterfront where they could enjoy the best of the summer while they would provide a worthwhile service. Having grown up in southeastern Wisconsin, the young women said the waterfront was an important part of their lives. However, as they watched the boat owners spend hours cleaning their boats prior to taking them out on the water, the idea for their business was created. “We would take over the job of detailing the boats so that the boat owner, instead of spending hours cleaning their boats, could spend the time on the water enjoying their boat,” Zugay said.

“Basically we offer three levels of service,” said Zugay. Those levels provide a variety of ways to keep the boat looking its best and prevent it from deteriorating from exposure to the elements, especially the hot sun.
Deep Clean
The first is the Deep Clean, which is usually done when the boat is coming out of storage. This is a service that many boat owners prefer to hire out than to tackle on their own. “We need to go through all the boat’s compartments and thoroughly clean them from the engines to the seats, floors and all spots in between,” said Zugay. Sometimes she said they find items that have been misplaced by the boat owners, such as sunglasses, ear pods or other personal items and after a long winter in storage may find spiders and other small critters that have made the boat their winter home. “Owners are always glad to get their personal belongings back and to realize they have not lost them. And they are delighted to have the boat cleared of all uninvited guests,” said Zugay. Deep cleaning includes both interior and exterior services. Why the water matters to novice kayakers Kayaking is a fun way to spend an afternoon, particularly in summertime. If smiles on the faces of kayakers aren’t enough to convince you just how fun this sport can be, perhaps statistics can convince you how enjoyable it is to paddle away in a kayak. According to the Physical Activity Council, which each year conducts the largest single-source research study of sports, recreation and leisure activity participation in the United States, recreational kayaking is the most popular paddlesport in the United States, attracting more than 11 million participants each year. People who have never before been in a kayak may be intrigued by those statistics and tempted to follow the example set by millions of kayakers who take to the water every day when the weather permits. Safety should be a top priority for all kayakers, and especially for novices. A kayaking course can be a great way for novices to familiarize themselves with the basics of kayaking, including the best practices in regard to staying safe on the water. Local watersports retailers and recreational organizations that take watersports enthusiasts out on the water may offer safety courses, and these courses can be great resources while also helping people get their feet wet before paddling away. When kayaking for the first time, it’s important that novices choose the right type of water for their experience level. Rough, choppy waters can prove challenging to even the most skilled kayakers, and these same waters can be deadly for novices. The following are some characteristics novice kayakers should look for in a body of water before pushing themselves and their kayaks into the current.
Size
Novices should avoid vast bodies of water, such as oceans, rivers or large lakes, until they gain more experience. Large ponds and small lakes can be great places

to gain some experience and familiarize oneself with the nuances of paddling.
Demeanor
Demeanor might not be a trait one normally associates with water, but looking at a body of water in this way can be a great way to determine if it’s the right place for a novice. If a body of water is raging, with choppy waters and rapid waves, then steer clear. If the water is calm, then it’s likely a safe spot for novices.
Traffic
Novices may be intimidated by crowds, but other kayakers can serve as something of a safety net for novices. Kayaking is a fun group activity, and novice paddlers should never go it alone.
Variety
Novices should steer clear of waters that allow power boats. Such vessels can alter paddling conditions quickly, and that can put novices in potentially precarious
positions. Stick to waters that allow only canoes or other boats that won’t affect water conditions.
Access
Until they get more comfortable in their kayaks, novice kayakers should stay close to shorelines so they have quick and simple access to land should they struggle to get acclimate to the water and being in a kayak. (METRO CREATIVE)

Regular touch-ups
Kayaking is a popular activity that even novices can enjoy, especially when they take certain measures to ensure their safety.
The second level of service is the weekly or bi-weekly touch up. This service is to clean up the boat so that it looks its best, removing the regular dirt and grime that accumulates. “Much like a weekly cleaning for your home,” Price said. They wash the entire inside of the boat paying special attention to the seats. Many of the boats have upholstery that is vinyl and needs to be cleaned regularly and protected from the UV rays that tend to dry it out and fade it. The services provided for the weekly or bi-weekly cleaning are customizable to suit the boat owner’s desires. Services include both interior and exterior cleaning. Starting with the inside, they will vacuum the entire interior of the boat. All vinyl cushions will be cleaned along with all vinyl surfaces. Interior glass will be cleaned and all fiberglass surfaces will be wiped down. On the exterior of the boat they will, as
with the deep clean, wash and dry the boat exterior as far as it is accessible. They will apply the UV protectant wax to prevent fading of color and as with the interior will clean all glass.
Don’t forget the trailer
The third level of service is not focused on the boat but on the boat’s trailer for those who transport their watercraft to the lake on weekends or on vacations. Trailers are notorious for picking up all kinds of road grime. The Barnacle Babes Detailing will take on the work of cleaning the entire trailer including the tires to remove any mud or other debris that accumulates. To do this they will begin by washing and drying the entire trailer. They will apply UV protectant wax to the trailer as they did to the boat itself. The tires will be washed and shined for a clean look. “We are very competitive with our pricing,” Zugay said. “The costs vary by type of service and size of boat. We have a very solid work ethic and are sure customers will be pleased with the results of their cleaning.” One of the advantages of having Barnacle Babes do your detailing is that you do not have to bring the boat to them. They go to
the boat and you don’t have to be there while they complete their tasks. The women use an appointment system, so boat owners know when they will be arriving to begin work. Owners may stay or take care of any other business while they are cleaning the boat. When you take friends out on the boat you will be proud of the way it looks, just like it arrived from the dealer when first purchased. Price and Zugay have similar backgrounds. They attended the same high school although Price was a senior when Zugay was starting as a freshman. They both have worked for Disney World in Florida although again at different times and in different jobs. Zugay worked with character representations while Price served as a lifeguard on Blizzard Beach. Each of them was in Florida for about 6 to 8 months per year.
Strong work ethic
Both women said working at Disney really reinforced their work ethic. They also have each worked at Lake Lawn Resort on the golf course although again at different times. And Price has also worked for a local boat company. They have
both been trained in boat detailing. Price is enrolled in flight school at Gateway Technical College in Kenosha. “Flight work is a family tradition,” she said. “I will be the third generation pilot in my family when I finish.” Her mother was a pilot for United Airlines, her father was a pilot while he was in the military. Her grandfather was also a pilot while her grandmother served as a flight attendant. “My parents actually met at Gateway while attending the same program I am currently enrolled in,” Price added. Perhaps one day you may run across her as you board your flight as she announces her presence at the controls to the passengers. The Barnacle Babes Detailing serves its customers from April 1 through Oct. 30. This year because of the COVID-19 virus they will not be detailing boats until May 1 at the earliest.
