ENJOY THE BEAUTY OF Fall has arrived with all its splendor and Southeast Wisconsin has a lot to offer area residents and visitors. Autumn events abound in the area from Oktoberfest celebrations to fall festivals to holiday happenings. Be sure to check out the calendar of events at the end of this guide to help plan your outings. The area has some unique outdoor museums, which are running seasonal events. Take the family out to Old World Wisconsin in Eagle and step back in time to learn about the immigrants who journeyed from Sweden to Wisconsin in the living-history museum’s fall program. Old World also offers a variety of holiday-themed events in November and December. For some more history, head
on out to the East Troy Railroad Museum and ride the train to the Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago to enjoy its Autumn Harvest Festival. The Geneva Lake Museum is another great place to take the family and learn about the area’s past. Area historical societies usually have weekend hours if you’re looking for more. Even though the weather is cooling off, there’s still plenty of time for outdoor activities like hiking, biking and camping. From the simplest of pleasures such as a long walk along a leaf-strewn road to a weekend trip to take in the color throughout the state, it’s a time to be outdoors. Take the kids to the farmers’ market for a lesson in where their
food comes from and a taste of fresh produce grown right here. What could be better than a crisp, homegrown apple on a warm fall day? Or pick the perfect pumpkin for that spooky jack-olantern. Fall is more than back to school.
From Elkhorn’s Oktoberfest to the Pumpkin Chuckin Festival in Union Grove to Thanksgiving and the beginning of the holiday season, there’s something to do for everyone. Get out and enjoy all autumn has to offer!

to strengthen the bonds they have with their children. But finding affordable, fun events the whole family can enjoy can sometimes prove challenging for budgetconscious parents. Few families can make it through a month without developing and adhering to a household budget. But even if money is tight, there are a host of affordable activities families can enjoy together.
Hiking
One of the best things about the great outdoors is that it’s often free to enjoy. Research local parks to find ones that offer age-appropriate hiking trails. Parents with young children should look for parks that offer more relaxing hikes with wellestablished trails that do not require any difficult climbing. If the kids are a little older, parks with more challenging, lessdeveloped trails may suffice.
Hiking is a great family activity in the autumn. Getting outdoors for some physical activity can help kids open up about their feelings and promote discussion.

Bowling
While bowling is not free, bowling remains a relatively inexpensive and familyfriendly activity. Bowling alleys may offer discounted rates for children and lower rates during off-peak hours. Seniors may also be eligible for discounts, so bring grandma and grandpa along as well. Bumper bowling makes it possible for toddlers to join in the fun, too, so don’t be discouraged from bowling if your children are closer to preschool age than high school age.
Apple, pumpkin picking Harvest time in Wisconsin offers a lot of fun for families. From picking out that perfect pumpkin, to walking through a corn maze, to bringing home a bag of fresh-picked apples for the first apple pie of the season, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Many of the area’s orchards and farms offer special events on the weekends that feature the harvest and local agriculture.

Quality time These festivals tend to cater to families, offering games and possibly even rides kids will love. Adults, too, can enjoy such gatherings, as festivals often invite local restaurants and food and beverage merchants to set up booths and peddle their wares to hungry festival goers. In Wisconsin, Oktoberfest celebrations aboud and Lake Geneva and Elkhorn both celebrate the state’s favorite beverage along with the fall season.
WINTER Many people may run indoors when the temperatures outside approach or dip below freezing. But the truly adventurous see no reason why a little cold weather should keep them cooped up indoors for months at a time. Sports and other physical activities can provide the perfect respite from the cabin fever that can settle in during long winters. Families looking to get some quality time outdoors together this winter can enjoy a host of activities in the great outdoors, even if the temperatures are a tad on the chilly side.
Sledding
Sledding may remind adults of their childhoods and turn kids’ snow days into fun afternoons they will never forget. Kids can seemingly ride their sleds and toboggans down snowy hills all day long, but even parents get a kick out of racing kids downhill or sharing a sled with their youngsters. While older kids can typically handle sleds on their own, parents should ride along with toddlers to prevent falls and handle steering
duties. When sledding, keep a close eye for any signs that suggest kids might be getting too cold, such as shivering or clothes that are soaked through.
Snowshoeing
Parents may not know that many retailers sell snowshoes for children. While snowshoeing can be physically demanding, it’s also a fun way for families that like family walks to continue those traditions even if there are a few inches of snow on the ground. Make sure kids are bundled up, paying extra attention to their footwear.
Snowman building
Perhaps no outdoor winter activity is more conducive to family fun than building a snowman. The season’s first substantial snowfall provides the perfect opportunity for parents and their children to start building some snowmen. While “snowman building” is unlikely to find its way onto any gym schedules, building a snowman provides a great workout. Lifting snow is great strength training, while pushing snow to form Frosty’s body is a great way to get in some cardiovascular exercise.
Skiing and snowboarding
The earlier youngsters start skiing and/or snowboarding, the more likely such activities will prove second nature. The area resorts offer skiing and snowboarding lessons to kids and adults, so parents can book weekend getaways for the family to nearby resorts and foster a love of winter sports in youngsters. While it’s tempting to huddle up indoors when winter hits full swing, families who embrace the great outdoors when the temperatures dip can avoid cabin fever and enjoy one another’s company along the way.
Alpine Valley, the largest ski locale in southeast Wisconsin, is the only resort in the Midwest with three highspeed quad lifts and four wonder carpets. Alpine features 20 slopes that range from beginner to expert mogul runs with 388 feet of vertical skiing. The hill also includes the Mohawk Terrain Park, which offers snowboarders and freestyle skiers a variety of rails, boxes and snow features.

TAKE A JOURNEY BACK IN TIME Old World Wisconsin offers immigrant tour by Bridget Bartal STAFF WRITER
Old World Wisconsin is bringing back its Wisconsin Journey program this fall. The 90-minute guided tour explores the lives of immigrants who journeyed from Sweden to Wisconsin. After a pilot season last summer, the second season of the tour will run Tuesdays through Fridays from Sept. 4 through Oct. 12. Tours leave from the main office at 10 a.m., noon and 2:30 p.m. Old World Wisconsin in Eagle is an outdoor museum with more than 60 historic structures. Tours offer an interactive experience of settler’s life, with docents dressed in period accurate clothes and heritage animals running around the grounds. Wisconsin Journey is a three-part tour, bringing guests to a 1890s Danish homestead, a 1910s Finnish farm and the Harmony Township Hall. At each of these locations, a group of no more than 16 guests has the opportunity to problem solve, interact with historic buildings and learn about a group of real settlers who made the trek to Wisconsin. “This is an extension of what Old World Wisconsin has been for the last eight years. You will be a part of the story instead of an observer. The guests drive the tour,” Old World Director Daniel J. Freas said. The tour is only offered to adults.

“In the past, the audiences sometimes clashed on tours that had both adults and kids on fieldtrips. Now we have the option of different tours for different groups of people,” Freas said. Wisconsin Journey follows the story of a group of Swedish immigrants who departed for the United States in 1843. The leader of the pack, Thure Kumlien, convinced his group of immigrants to move to Lake Koshkonong. Kumlien, fascinated with nature and birds, spotted this location in a North America nature guide. Before the tour begins, each visitor is assigned to a person who traveled with Kumlien. Along the way, guests receive information about their lives and census records; this helps relate that these are real people who made Wisconsin their home in the
late 1800s. Challenge cards are handed out, recounting real events that happened to this group of settlers. One family lost three children and the guests were prompted to consider how the family would have paid for a burial and a coffin. One woman offered that they could sell the oxen team that their documents showed the family owned. “We want it to be about inquiry, curiosity and play. It’s about humans, history and stories.
