To protect the shores from flooding, restrictions were placed on waterway usage by the boats. They included a time of no boating, and then boating with no wake allowed, and finally a return to open boating. Along with restrictions because of high water, there were limitations on numbers of people allowed to gather in the boats due to the pandemic In not allowing the boats to produce high speeds it also eliminated some of the pleasures of boating, such as water skiing and tubing. Without the boat being able to open its engines to pull the water skier or tube rider the fun of flying across the waves is not experienced. Summertime is a time when we look forward to all the out of doors activities. From swimming and boating there are also birthdays, graduations, family reunions and just plain picnics, which bring family and friends together to enjoy the best of summertime. This year was a difficult time for we not only endured the high water but also the need for self-isolation due to the pandemic. After spending long periods of time isolated, every one was ready to take to the water and to enjoy summer barbecues and boat rides. But large gatherings of families and friends were not to become a reality this year. We did

have some improvement in the pandemic numbers, and limited family members were allowed to gather in the boat, while they enjoyed time together on the water. For most of July and August boats were plentiful on the Chain and on the Fox River as families isolated from many usual summer activities such as summer camps, sports, and the ability to travel. Their activity of choice became taking to the water. For those homes with swimming pools or living close to the water where beaches were open, swimming became another activity of choice especially during those 90 degrees plus temperature days of July. The sounds of laughter and the splashing of water could be heard as children and adults whiled away the warm summer days. According to Amazon.com portable swimming pools from small children’s wading pools to above ground backyard pools were sold out early as families looked for a way to get their children outside after several months of home confinement. In ground pools were also a big seller but for many, the decision to install one in their yard came too late as the pool builders were booked solid through the fall. The Chain O’Lakes remains the largest inland waterway in the state and as such attracts visitors looking to enjoy a day or weekend on the lakes. Many bring their own boats but for those not fortunate enough to own a boat, they may be rented locally. According to Amber Bowler of Your Boat Club on the Chain O’Lakes, this year has seen a high rise in rentals of all types of boats. “Many summer weekends, renters can arrive and rent a boat for the weekend without a prior reservation. Not so this year. Most of our boats are reserved by mid-week for the weekend,” Bowler said. As we move into the cooler weather, it is time to make plans to put the boats to bed. For the non-motorized boats such as the kayaks, rowboats, wind sails and Stand Up Paddle boards, preparing them for winter is an easy task. When you are through using them for the season, give them a good cleaning, remove any debris, and store them away until next spring when one will again bring them out, clean off the winter dust and be ready to head for the lake. Most owners of these types of boats tend to store them in the garage, or storage sheds or in the cases of the smaller kayaks, wind sails and SUP boards in the basement of their homes. The power boats, just like your automobile requires maintenance throughout the boating season and before
storing it for winter. While some boat owners prefer to do the maintenance themselves, preparing the boat for winter is a big job one that is often left to the professionals at the marina. Before servicing the boat, begin by removing all any loose items or materials which could become damaged by freezing temperatures. These include, water toys and life jackets which will mildew if moisture
seeps into the boat. “The outside of the boat also needs to be cleaned of any debris that has attached itself to the boat over the summer,” said Bill Wehr Jr., former owner of Bald Knob Marina, on Pistakee lake in Johnsburg. Additives are placed in the gas line, while a nontoxic antifreeze is run through the engine to protect it from corrosion. Then the oil is changed and the battery is disconnected. Boats are stored either out of doors or inside a storage facility. That choice determines the final step. According to Hustler Sports who only provides outside storage, boats need to be shrink wrapped if they are going to be kept outside. Shrink wrapping is a process that seals the boat from the out door elements. The largest indoor storage on the Chain is The Boathouse. With massive buildings. They are able to stack the boats up three levels. They are placed on and removed from the stacks by the use of a special forklift. This special indoor storage is also used by some boat owners during the summer months if they prefer not to leave them in the water between uses. It requires a little advance notice to bring the boat in and out of storage during the boating season. While there is no exact date of when to put the boat into storage or to take it out, most boats begin to go into storage around the middle of October and remain there through the middle of May. Weather conditions are responsible for the final decision of when to remove the boat from the water. It is not recommended that a boat remain in the water if the temperature remains below freezing for several days. While putting the boat to bed for the winter may be with some sadness, it is also a time to think about how one will enjoy the lakes during the next season of the year when we move on to winter activities while we wait patiently for spring to arrive again. Before taking the boat to the marina to be put to bed for the winter, take one last trip down the Chain O’Lakes and along the Fox River and savor the beauty of life on the water.

How to hike safely in remote areas Many people have rediscovered the great outdoors in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. Social distancing measures have greatly restricted indoor gatherings, but outdoor activities, particularly once parks were reopened, allowed people to get out of their homes while still keeping their distance from others. Outdoor dining boosts the allure of Jonathan’s

Jonathan’s on Brick Street in downtown Delavan has been offering outdoor seating for much of the summer in addition to its large, indoor dining room. In an effort to accommodate customers’ preferences for seating and meet social distancing guidelines, reservations are currently required. Upon making a reservation, guests will be asked if they prefer to sit in the dining room, at a high top table, at the bar or outdoors (weather permitting.) Larger groups will be seated at separate tables and the restaurant has implemented a suggested 90-minute dining time. “If you feel you will need more time, please inform us when making your reservation to see if we can accommodate you,” a post about the reservation requirement states. Staff recommends making reservations well ahead of time and calling earlier in the day – they have someone answering the phone around 11 a.m. – rather than waiting until the busy dinner hour begins at 4:30 p.m. According to Lana Walton, who is on staff at Jonathan’s, the addition of outdoor seating has been well received by customers. “The outdoor seating area has been incredibly popular with all of our customers. They enjoy the fresh air and views of the park and sunsets as they dine,” she said. “A wonderful place to wait for a table is our padded chairs, which are extremely popular as well,” she said. “They’re comfortable and several rock as well.” She said the crew at Jonathan’s is pleased with how customers and the community have embraced the outdoor space. “We are extremely happy with the community’s response to our new outdoor dining and cocktail space,” Walton said. “We look forward to seeing how the space changes as we move into the fall as well,” she added.
‘Come as you are’ Chef Jonathan Cross and his wife Tiffany own Jonathan’s on Brick Street. Though the official name of the street it’s on is Walworth Avenue, it has been referred to as Brick Street since the mid 1800s. The street was dirt but was paved with bricks to keep the circus wagons from sinking into the mud and since it was the only paved street in the city at the time, it became known as Brick Street. At one point, the building Jonathan’s is in was set to be condemned. “But with the vision of Debra Alder and her husband Jeff Scherer, they transformed it into one of the most enticing restaurant spaces in the area,” it states on Jonathan’s website. Brick walls adorn three rooms, consisting of a retail wine and cheese tasting area, a large granite bar and another room for fine dining. Additionally, the main dining room is available for private lunchtime parties or business meetings for 20 to 60 guests. The philosophy at the restaurant is simple. “Come as you are, and be catered to your every culinary desire,” it states. Jonathan’s features local organic farm produce when available along with locally sourced, fresh lamb from Delavan’s own Pinn Oaks Farm. When it comes to steaks, they select USDA choice or higher-grade Angus Midwestern beef and then cuts all of the steaks in-house. The chef said he believes in offering elegantly presented plates that are both delicious and affordable. “We price structure our menu under the big city steak and seafood houses to give even the budget-minded customers the ability to experience fine dining without breaking the bank,” it states. Jonathan has a longstanding history in the restaurant industry working in various country clubs, golf courses, yacht clubs and fine dining restaurants since he was a teenager. The restaurant is his first stand-alone venture “and with your support it will be a long-lasting dining destination for Delavan,” the website states. “We look forward to serving you… with a warm welcome and delicious food.” Fall/Winter 2020-21

Halloween FAST FACTS AND FIGURES
Halloween is celebrated in various countries. Halloween can trace its origins to Ireland and is based on the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, during which people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off spirits. Halloween has since become a day to play pranks and don costumes while going door-to-door seeking treats from neighbors. Each year, the National Retail Federation tracks Halloween trends. The figures and statistics shared by the NRF and other organizations paint a picture of just how popular Halloween can be. • Consumers will spend an estimated $9 billion on Halloween. The average, American will spend $86.79 on the festivities, according to the NRF. • The U.S. Census Bureau indicates that there are 41.1 million potential trick-ortreaters aged 5 to 14.
• Ninety-five percent of people surveyed by the NRF planned to purchase candy for Halloween. The next most popular purchase is decorations (74 percent). • Forty-five percent of respondents planned to carve a pumpkin for Halloween, says the NRF. • In Canada, there are 2,569 farms with pumpkin patches, according to the 2016 Census of Agriculture. • The top-ranked costumes for children in 2018 were princess and superhero. Adults planning to dress up were more likely to go as a witch or a vampire. • Data from domestic box office earnings of horror movies in 2018 totaled $752.2 million. This accounts for movie earnings in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Guam. “A Quiet Place” and “Halloween” were the top-grossing horror flicks of the year. • The ubiquitous “pumpkin spice” starts to turn up in various products as soon as there are hints of autumn. Nielsen says $6.9 million was spent on pumpkin spice products in 2018.
• Candy corn is either loved or loathed. According to the National Confectioners Association, 42.7 percent of people who enjoy candy corn say they eat the narrow white part of the candy corn first. • The NRF states that, when looking for their ideal costumes, 33 percent of consumers will check online first, followed closely by 29 percent in stores. • Pet costumes remain incredibly popular. Prosper Insights, a marketing and analytics company, states that 31.2 million Americans plan to dress up their pets – with Millennials being the largest demographic to do so. •There are potentially 120 million stops for trick-or-treaters to visit in the United States, based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau. • The Manufacturing and Wholesale Trade Division in Canada says that there were 158 businesses engaged in formal wear and costume rentals in Canada in 2017. As fall moves into winter we begin to see those beautiful white flakes falling gently from the sky. They come down coating tree branches and suddenly fall to the ground creating a wonderful world of white. They turn the area into a magical winter wonderland. Winter certainly is the most wonderful time of the year when fresh snow covers the ground. Put all that fresh snow to good use, bundle up, get active and discover the great outdoors,” said Wendy Kummerer, Director of Marketing and Communications McHenry County Conservation District. “And don’t forget to bring a thermos of hot chocolate to enjoy when you are finished with your activity.” Some winter activities require very little extra equipment. Start with heading outside with children in tow and begin to build a snowman in the front yard. Kids who enjoy the Frosty the Snowman shows will be excited to have their own Frosty. When finished enjoy a cup of hot chocolate topped with a marshmallow.

Build a snow fort and have a snowball fight if the snow is not so icy that the snowballs could hurt someone. Getting the kids out of the house and away from the electronic games and participating in physical activities is both fun and healthy, not only for the children but also for the adults.
Sledding
Many of us remember sledding as children. Grabbing our sled and heading to the nearest hill to slide down. Sometimes they were just small hills in your own or your neighbor’s back yard, while other times a trip to the local park or forest preserve added to the height and fun of a swift ride down the slope. Family activities such as these will make memories.
Snowshoeing
Looking for something a little more active? Snowshoeing is becoming more popular in this area. Originally found in the far north regions of the U.S., Canada, and the Scandinavian countries, who are known for their deep snow, snowshoeing came to the Midwest with the arrival of the Norwegian immigrants. Snowshoeing, along with cross country skiing, were the main means of traveling in the winter when snow covered all in this arctic region. Snowshoeing requires a pair of Fall/Winter 2020-21
snowshoes and a pair of poles to guide you on your way. They traditionally have a hard wood frame with rawhide lacings. When attached to your boots they allow for distribution of your body weight over a bigger surface, thus allowing you not to sink all the way into the snow. Both adults and children will enjoy the feeling of walking on the snow rather than in the snow. Snowshoeing is considered a way to hike. When there is 5 inches or more of snow on the ground, snowshoes can be rented at the Lost Valley Visitors Center, Glacial Park. They have both adult and children’s sizes.
Cross country skiing
Cross country skiing is to me the best outdoor activity in the wintertime. Dress in layers, pick up your cross country skis and head for the trails. Both the McHenry County Conservation District and the Lake County Forest Preserves have a variety of trails to accommodate skiers from beginners to advanced. Cross country skiing can be enjoyed by yourself or with friends or family. Being out on the trail alone, with the snow glistening in the winter sunlight is a peaceful experience. The silence of the woods is enjoyable with only the sounds of the skis swishing along the trail and sometimes the sound of a bird in the distance. When skiing with Catch all the

the family, the laughs and giggles of the children will make it a special experience. One way to enjoy cross country skiing is to join in McHenry County Conservation District’s Candlelight Ski/hike. Each month there is a special candlelight ski on Friday and Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. If there is not 4 inches of snow, enjoy a candlelit hike instead. After your ski/hike sit around the campfire and enjoy some hot refreshments while experiencing the allure of the winter woods. Visit the www.mccdistrict.org for dates and locations of the night skis.
Ice fishing
Are you a fisherman? Do you restrict your fishing to summer or do you join the many ice fishermen that can be found on the chain of lakes, when the measurable ice is 4 inches thick? Ice fishing is another winter activity that can be enjoyed alone or with family or friends. As the ice continues to thicken, groups of small huts appear on the lakes. Fishermen with their augers, drill a hole in the ice to lower their fishing lines. Some groups can be seen on the lake with their grills, much like tailgating at a football game. They bring hamburgers or brats or they grill the fish they catch. Walk carefully on the ice watching for fishing holes that have been cut out that are easily stumbled into.

Snowmobiling

Just as boats cover the Chain O’Lakes in the summer, when the ice on the lakes is more than 5 inches thick the sight and sound of snowmobiles racing across the chain of lakes takes on a life of their own. If the winter is cold enough to sustain the thickness of the ice, snowmobile activities on the lakes will continue through the winter. Because the snowmobile trails and the horse trail overlap in the forest preserves, they are weather dependent on opening. The horse trails close when they become icy for the safety of the horses according to Wendy Kummerer. “When the trails are right for snowmobiling that is 4 to 6 inches of snow on frozen ground and it is after December 10th the horse trails close for horses,” Kummerer said.”But if we have a mild winter and the snow melts and there is no snow prediction, the trails open again for horses and close for the snowmobiles.” So it is necessary to check for conditions on a daily basis.

Down hill skiing
Down hill skiing is available just over the state line in nearby Wilmot. Wilmot Mountain has been a fixture in that area since 1938. Today with 120 skiable acres, 23 trails and seven lifts there are a variety of hills to keep one skiing all day. A children’s ski area is available. They also have snowboarding and a tubing hill. If downhill skiing is a favorite winter sport, spend a day out at Wilmot. Since they do make their own snow, they may be open when other winter activities who rely on natural snow are unavailable. For days this winter when it is not possible to enjoy the outdoor activities consider a trip to Glacial Park and enjoy a visit to Lost Valley Visitor Center. Enjoy the exhibits, use the binoculars to check for wildlife, or check out books, puzzles and activity pages in the Sandhill Study. Watch holiday preparations from days of old. Step back in time and watch volunteers in historical attire prepare for winter and the holidays as they would have in the mid 19th century.
