The community’s event calendar continues to grow, and the excitement is mounting! 2022 kicks off with the BY Chris 3rd Annual Spring Food Clapper Truck Festival on May ELKHORN AREA 21. The festival features CHAMBER OF COMMERCE & 20-plus food trucks, live TOURISM CENTER music, kid’s activities, a vendor and craft fair and specials at businesses located downtown. Saturdays on the Square makes its way
back to downtown Elkhorn for the fourth year. This weekend market features a fresh market with seasonal items, crafters, wellness workouts and local food stands gathering on the square, Saturdays starting May 28 and running until Sept 3. One longstanding tradition that brings visitors from far and wide will be the 173rd Walworth County Fair, which is held six days up to and including Labor Day weekend. Another fairground favorite is Elkhorn’s largest Antique Flea Market with more than 500 vendors filling the fairgrounds four times throughout the summer. Elkhorn Ribfest will celebrate its fifth year of good food, good music and good times by adding an extra day to the fest which will run, July 13-17. Admission and parking are free and this year more than 80,000 visitors are

n behalf of the citizens, the City Council and myself, I would like to extend a personal warm welcome to the City of Elkhorn. Elkhorn has so much to offer. It’s located in the center of Walworth BY Bruce County. The population Lechner in Elkhorn is a bit over CITY OF 10,000 people and is ELKHORN MAYOR growing. It’s accessible within reasonable drives to Milwaukee, Madison, Janesville, Racine, Kenosha and Chicago. When you drive into Elkhorn, one cannot help but feel a very warm welcome. The city is a reflection of traditional hometown values and has a great deal of charm. Our motto is “Living in Harmony.” The streets are lined with old-fashioned street lamps and Elkhorn is known as “Christmas Card Town.” Elkhorn has a small town feel with much to offer. It’s a growing community where families as well as businesses can grow and features many restaurants and other businesses owned by local residents. There is a great job market here and it’s expected to grow in the next 10 years. The city also offers wonderful recreational programs for people of all ages. Elkhorn has seven excellent public schools and one private school. Elkhorn Area High School has outstanding, state-
of-the-art athletic facilities. There are plenty of activities to keep you busy throughout all four seasons. From the Chamber of Commerce to the Walworth County Fairgrounds, one can always find an event going on most weekends. In the summer, Elkhorn hosts farmers markets on Saturday mornings that begin Memorial Weekend and run throughout the summer. The farmers market is held at the beautiful downtown square at Veterans Park. Don’t forget to attend our annual Elkhorn Corn and Brat Days and Oktoberfest festival. And for those looking for a treasure, enjoy the antique flea market held at the Walworth County Fairgrounds the last Sunday each month from June through September. Elkhorn is the home of Rib Fest, which takes place in July, has concerts and festivals at the Walworth County Fairgrounds and draws rib cookers and guests from near and far. The city is also the home of the Walworth County Fair that runs for six days just before and over Labor Day weekend. The old movie theater downtown is where the Lakeland Players group performs plays and musicals. And in the winter months, Elkhorn hosts the annual Christmas parade, plus there’s an ice skating rink for all ages to partake in at the Veterans Park grounds sponsored by local businesses. Christmas parade will mark the 41st year with families and friends lining the streets to see the floats, music, novelty acts and, of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus, on the first Saturday in December. You can also visit the Clauses the night before the parade at the Town Tree Lighting in the Square, Dec. 2 and at Let It Glow at the Walworth County Fairgrounds following the tree lighting. Let It Glow will celebrate Santa Dec 2-4 with continued drive-thru shows throughout the month of December. Businesses and community groups celebrate with lit displays and festive attire to usher in the holiday spirit. Teamwork gets project back on track Stebnitz Builders partners with YouthBuild on construction home

W
hen progress on the Career and College Academy’s YouthBuild project ground to a halt following the departure of its construction manager, local contractor Stebnitz Builders stepped up to the plate to help get things back on track. Funded by a federal grant, the YouthBuild program is partnership between the CCA and Community Action of Rock and Walworth counties that gives students six months of on-the-build skills and construction training. The program built a home on South Maple Lane in Whitewater. Once completed, Community Action will use the home to help a family who is struggling to get a traditional bank loan for a home, providing a loan at a reduced rate. CCA Director of School to Work Opportunities Chris Trottier said Community Action has been working diligently to keep the program staffed, with the current labor market it’s been difficult to keep a construction manager. He said the construction manager works with the kids, plans the on-site lessons and work, manages the subcontractors and ordering and handles the training for valuable student certifications like HBI PACT. “This individual develops relationships with the kids, teaches them the skills, how to use the tools… it’s a pretty important position,” he said. Trottier said the program lost its construction manager in August when he left to pursue another management position. “We were left with nobody and we were kind of working collaboratively with the team to make sure we were moving forward to the best of our ability,” he said. Trottier said he reached out to Chris Stebnitz, who made a few referrals but those leads didn’t pan out. Stebnitz next told Trottier to contact Tracy McHugh, the sales and brand manager at Stebnitz Builders. McHugh had good news – they had a crew waiting on YOUTHBUILD • CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

YOUTHBUILD • CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5 materials they wanted to keep busy and asked Trottier if it would be OK for that crew to work with the students, all at no cost to the YouthBuild program. McHugh said with Stebnitz experiencing the effects of the skilled labor shortage industry like so many others in the construction industry, the company has taken an active role in developing an outlet for students interested in the skilled trades. This project was another great opportunity for the company to give back, she said. “We’ve partnered with Elkhorn Area High School to give students interested in carpentry and construction a hands-on learning experience on a project site as they complete their high school careers with a Youth Apprenticeship,” McHugh said. “We provide job shadow opportunities for the YouthBuild program and participate in career fairs at schools around Walworth County. We also created the Stebnitz Builders $1,000 scholarship for a graduating senior in Walworth County that is continuing their education in a skilled trade program.” She said Stebnitz Builders is committed to doing its part in combating the labor shortage, not only for the company, but for its trade partners as well. McHugh said Stebnitz Builders was no stranger to the program, as they have
has had a company representative on the YouthBuild Steering Committee since the start of the 2020-2021 school year. Additionally, the CCA has brought several groups of students to Stebnitz job sites and offices for job shadowing and McHugh had even visited the YouthBuild project in Whitewater last spring to see the progress and meet the students working on it.
Two busy weeks
Trottier said the first couple of days with the new crew was spent transitioning from the old construction manager, auditing the site to determine what needed to be done and putting together a plan and materials list. “The kids went up there and worked with them, and the relationships that the Stebnitz carpenters and employees built with the kids, it was just amazing to watch evolve over a two-week period. Anytime you bring inexperienced kids onto a job site and start training and teaching them, that’s a heavy investment, that’s work,” Trottier said. “Having the patience and demeanor to make it work was clearly evident with absolutely all of the Stebnitz employees, which is really a tribute to how they hire and who they hire, because they were really, really great with the kids. And the kids learned a ton.”

Trottier said it was a great experience and a busy couple of weeks, and though there was some rough construction that needed to be finished, the students and Stebnitz crew quickly made significant progress. By the time the crews left, the student-contractor team had installed windows, doors, siding, fascia and soffit – and the home now looks like a home. McHugh said with Stebnitz crews typically featuring a strong mix of experienced lead carpenters and laborers, it makes for continuous learning opportunities and working with young adults is something Stebnitz crews are familiar with and enjoy – especially with the company’s strong presence in the community. “As a company, we are actively involved in the community. We host an annual chili cook-off at the office in February, a March Madness bracket challenge and a food drive during the holidays. Offering our crew for the YouthBuild project was a win-win for everyone,” she said. Trottier said in talking to Stebnitz employees, they said they enjoyed the experience and are going to miss their time working with the students. He said it was an experience that meant a lot to the students as well. “When you look at what our district

is always trying to do, it’s trying to get kids experiential opportunities around the development of skills and career navigation. I think for these kids who signed up to learn skills through a very deliberate, intentional calendar, they had two weeks of intense growth around expert carpenters and really good people,” he said. Trottier said the kids are even more excited to join the trades now. “I think when you work with people who have infectious behavior, attitudes and show up to work with a zest and ambition to do the right thing, are professional about it and have fun at what they’re doing, the kids are like, well this is a pretty good profession,” he said. As a way to show their gratitude to the Stebnitz crew involved in the build, Trottier said the YouthBuild program provided the crew with CCA water bottles, YouthBuild T-shirts and a meal at Enzo’s in Elkhorn that the crew could take home to their families. “When somebody is so generous, not only with their time but their resources and their investment into kids in the community, I don’t know what else to do but say thank you,” Trottier said, noting that CCA Principal Kelly Demerath came up with the idea for the gift bundle. “I know that the Stebnitz employees were very appreciative of that gesture, and I really appreciate Kelly for going the extra mile. She even wrote thank you cards to each of them,” he added. While their time with Stebnitz has come to a close, at least for now, Trottier said the partnership helped the YouthBuild program get back on track with its schedule. “They helped us get the build back up to being appropriately on schedule,” he said. “We were a couple of weeks behind and they kind of expedited that process, which allowed us to get some other contractors in so we can continue to move forward.” He said the build is in a transition phase now, with the students having less handson as subcontractors come in to complete work like plumbing, electrical and HVAC. The program does plan to continue searching for a new construction manager for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and in the meantime, students are working on a community service project with EASD Community Engagement Coordinator Jon Anzalone and the middle and high schools, as well as other projects. “We have multiple things going on to ensure that the kids are getting the skills and experiences they applied and signed up for, so we’re fulfilling that promise,” Trottier said, adding that they’re excited to start insulating and drywalling. “They’ve kind of been stuck in this rough construction process for a while, so it’s good to start seeing it progress… it looks like a home to them.” 2022 ELKHORN OUR TOWN

Historical society purchases city hall It will house a resource center, exhibition space and more, reps say

T
he Elkhorn Common Council voted unanimously in favor of selling Elkhorn City Hall to the Walworth County Historical Society last spring. A subcommittee of the Walworth County Historical Society Board of Directors – including WCHS President Jim Boardman, Lisa Brellenthin and Pat Blackmer – said they had been working with Walworth County Administrator Mark Luberda in trying to build a 2,500foot expansion onto the Doris M. Reinke Resource Center. However, a little known state law that would prevent them from donating the addition back to Walworth County ultimately brought that project to a halt. Blackmer said they learned soon after Elkhorn City Hall would be available for purchase.
With little to no interest from other parties, Blackmer said the society determined that building could be a good fit for the historical society. Entered into the National Registry in 2012, she said construction of the art deco building began in 1931. “If we acquired it, it would be our largest artifact,” Blackmer said. “It’s basically a fortress, and while it does need some restoration and renovation, it will be a perfect fit for the historical society.” After learning the city hall building would allow the society to nearly quadruple the floor space it would have gained with its earlier proposed expansion project, Blackmer said they reached out to Elkhorn City Administrator James Heilman. “He was very proactive in assisting us in securing the building. He did a lot of background work for us,” she said. Blackmer said throughout the process,
the historical society has been working with Danielle Benden of Driftless Pathways in Lodi. Blackmer said the historical society is elated and thrilled with the approval of the purchase. “There couldn’t actually be a better venue for us. We’re right downtown, high visibility and we’ll certainly bring a lot of traffic to the downtown area,” she said. “And a lot of space,” Richardson added. Boardman agreed. “We’re going to have a lot more room, we’re going to restore it and it’s going to be a vital part of the downtown,” he said.
Last year, the Elkhorn Common Council voted unanimously in favor of selling the Elkhorn City Hall building, at 9 S. Broad Street, to the Walworth County Historical Society for $1. It will nearly quadruple the floor space compared to what the WCHS currently has available. Rec department changes options after COVID-19 The Elkhorn Recreation Department would like to thank the Elkhorn community for signing up for our programs and events. The ways we typically program has changed drastically and also forced us to be as creative as possible BY Karl last year. Overall, we Sorvick have learned a lot about ELKHORN our department and RECREATION how to better serve the DIRECTOR community. Some of the programs originally created during the pandemic are now here to stay. We would like to take a moment to highlight the following programs: • Grinch on the Go Kits: The Grinch, who lives in Mount Crumpit, made over 60
visits to front doors all throughout Elkhorn. Along with a visit from this green grouch, families also received an activity kit, which included many at-home activities. Some of the activities that were included are Bingo with the Grinch, a local library read aloud, hot cocoa bombs and much more! Plans are already being made for him to make a visit in December. The recreation department even got approval from The Grinch to visit over 100 families, if needed. • 6 Feet Trick-or-Treat: This program would not have been possible without the help of local businesses and organizations. It was held at Sunset Park on Oct. 30 of last year and was designed as an alternative to typical door-to-door trickor-treating. There were over 30 stations ran or sponsored by local businesses and service groups. Each station had a creative delivery method of serving candy from 6 (or more) feet away. This year our main
goal for the event is to better accommodate the high attendance while also improving our stations. • New online registration: In the spring, we will be launching our new registration software. This new software will allow families to sign up for more programs from the comfort of their own home. Although we love having you stop by the rec center in-person, we understand that the option of signing up virtually works best for most families. We are hoping to expand our typical year-to-year programming by adding E-Gaming, more Grab and Go Kits and additional special events. Although the pantry has an outdoor garden in summer, it will continue to grow greens in the Flex Farms because yields are higher and the crop does not need herbicides or pesticides, according to Zimmerman. Plans are also in the works to partner with local businesses, schools, and 4-H clubs so the fresh local food movement becomes a community project. Above all, Hughes said, food insecurity can happen to anyone and the food bank exists as a safety net for a large community. “We want to provide food that will help people on their life journey, and perhaps change that journey. If Flex Farms are the way to do it, so be it. Fresh food should not be dependent on someone’s economic condition,” she said. The Walworth County Food Pantry and Diaper Bank is at 205 Commerce Court, Elkhorn, and is open to all residents of Walworth County. Elkhorn’s Oktoberfest to feature bands, brats and beers by Heather Ruenz STAFF WRITER
One of the premiere fall events in the area is Elkhorn’s Oktoberfest. “This family friendly event will be an outdoor festival that family and friends can enjoy while maintaining social distancing and safety measures,” according to a page on the Elkhorn Area Chamber of Commerce website. Open carry of alcoholic beverages has been approved and goes along with the beer and wine tasting, which will keep the new format started last year of local businesses hosting the tastings in an effort to support those businesses, get people in their doors and provide an opportunity for guests to explore the downtown Elkhorn area. The annual event normally features a craft fair in Veterans Park, a variety of local and German cuisine available for purchase, and live music throughout the weekend. Young Oktoberfest fans can join in on the fun, too, as there are bounce houses, face painting and other activities for children. There is also a 5K run and 2-mile walk held during the weekend, with the route going through town and the Walworth County Fairgrounds before making its way back to downtown. The other major event held in conjunction with Oktoberfest is the unveiling of this year’s Christmas card. Elkhorn is known as Christmas Card Town and each year a new card is designed. The chamber relies on many volunteers throughout the day in several capacities. Those interested in getting involved are asked to contact the Elkhorn at 262-723-5788.

Better prepared Several area fire, rescue and law enforcement departments took part in a training day on Green Lake in the Lauderdale Lakes chain last year. Crews honed their skills in the water rescue and recovery training to be better prepared for actual emergencies on the water. Departments involved included Lauderdale LaGrange Fire and Rescue, Lauderdale Lakes Law Enforcement, MABAS Division 103 Water Rescue and Recovery Team, Elkhorn, Lake Geneva, Town of Linn and Williams Bay fire departments, Mercy MD-1 and the Walworth County Sheriff Office Communication Division. ‘The world series of 4-H’ Raising, showing animals at the fair runs deep for local family

W
hile many families in the area are preparing for days of funnel cakes, music and adventures on the midway at the Walworth County Fair, the Kynell family of Walworth took the final step after months of hard work showing their swine this past year. For the Kynell family, 4-H and the county fair runs generations deep, with mom, Angie Christenson-Kynell – who grew up on a beef farm – having shown swine from the age of 9 until she was 20. But the family 4-H lineage doesn’t end there. Angie said her passion for it grew from her parents while her mother was encouraged to get involved by Angie’s grandmother. “It’s very much a family thing for us. It goes back many generations, probably three or four. I was at the fair when I was 6 months old and I haven’t missed one
since,” she said. Angie said a large part of the family’s focus has been raising livestock – she raised both beef and swine as a child. Her children have taken on the challenge of raising and showing swine, as well as boer goats in the past. “When you raise livestock, it gives you a strong work ethic, it gives you compassion for animals and it also gives you a better understanding of where your food comes from,” she said. “That’s the purpose behind these market animals; it’s food on the table and it gives these guys a lesson that that’s how it works.” Having been raised around livestock, Angie said it was something that she wanted to continue with her children and she’s succeeded. Holly, 14, Brody, 13, and Clay, 10, are following in her footsteps. While the Kynells don’t live on a farm today, they’re fortunate enough to have a family friend with farm property, a place
where they’re able to keep and care for their animals. “I wanted them to still experience production agriculture, so this is at a level that they can still experience it without having a full-fledged farm,” she said. “We’re thankful that we have a friend who lets us keep our animals here.”
A family affair
In showing swine each year, Angie said it’s a team effort, with each taking turns to help out and accommodate work and extra-curricular activities schedules, such as softball and football. “Not every member of the family shows up for every single feeding. It’s definitely a team effort and we try to make it so it works for everyone,” she said. The family gets their swine in April and feeds them twice a day by hand from that 4-H • CONTINUED ON PAGE 26

As it gets closer to the fair, they focus on working with and walking the swine. “It’s definitely a time commitment, but the fair is like the grand finale, the world series of 4-H,” she said. Holly, who’s been involved in 4-H for six years, said she loves working with the swine but the experience is as much about the lifelong friends she’s made and the lessons learned. “They like to do the same things as you, and you all hang out at the fair all week long,” Holly said. “It also teaches a lot of responsibility and accountability, as well as leadership skills, which is awesome to have.” Brody, who’s been involved for five years, agreed with his sister, and said his favorite part is having the pigs but overall, he enjoys the experience. “Just being in a different environment… the fair is fun,” Brody said. Clay, who’s been involved for two years now, said he likes the friends he’s made, but gets joy from the animals, too. “Just being around pigs, it makes me happy,” Clay said. Angie said their family has fun watching the pigs grow by weighing and tracking their weights. “It’s fun to look at pictures from when we first bring the pigs home; they’re little, itty bitty things and it’s fun to see how much they’ve grown,” she said.
Be part of the fun
Holly said she encourages others to give 4-H a try because it’s a lot of fun and projects aren’t just limited to livestock – there are many ways to become involved. “Anything you want to do, you could do for 4H,” Holly said. Brody said there’s a lot more to it – and to get out of it – than many people think. “I’m 99% positive that a lot of the kids who don’t get to do it would really enjoy it,” Brody said. Angie said one of the great things about 4-H is the charitable efforts clubs take on, including working with the Salvation Army around Christmas time, helping out at the concession stands and service projects such as making blankets for Children’s Hospital, just to name a few. “In this area, agriculture’s still very vital, but on the flip side of it, there’s still a lot of non-agriculture kids that end up being in 4-H and FFA, and that’s great,” she said. While Angie admitted 4-H and fair projects are a lot of work – and can be expensive and stressful, especially leading up to the fair – it’s a very rewarding experience. “It’s a feel-good feeling that you have. It’s like, ‘Hey, we made it, and here we go!’ I encourage any family that’s never experienced it to give it a try,” Angie said. “It’s in my genetics, and I think it’s been passed down to these guys. It’s just how we

are; it’s our way of life. Some people go to Mexico every spring break because that’s part of their life, and a part of our life is going to the Walworth County Fair every years for 7 days,” she added. This week, the feeling of accomplishment paired with time spent with friends will likely be the most meaningful prize for the Kynell family. “You spend six, seven, eight days with people you have a common interest with, and we honestly just have a great time,” Angie said. Holly said the excitement has been building.
“It’s not even just the fair. It’s the two weeks leading up to the fair where we start seeing everyone and talking to everyone a lot more,” she said. “It’s like our vacation,” Brody added. Angie said while at the fair, the family rarely goes down to the midway, choosing instead to spend their time where it counts. “I know there’s really great things that we probably miss out on seeing, but we hardly every make it down there because we just like hanging with our people back in the barns and in the campgrounds,” she said.

Post 45 seeks new squadron members by Kellen Olshefski CORRESPONDENT
Elkhorn American Legion Post 45 is looking for members to join the Sons of the Legion squadron for the post. Like the American Legion, the Sons of the Legion serves the community, however, it’s open to a much broader membership pool than the American Legion itself, as it allows male descendants of those who have served to join. “There’s a lot of them out there that are patriotic and didn’t get a chance to serve and would like to do something for the community,” Elkhorn Post 45 Finance Officer Jim Boardman said. “We’d like them to join, and we’ll help them out to get started, help them come up with fundraising projects.” Boardman said the idea of starting a Sons of the Legion squadron came from his son and couple of other local men who were interested in joining the Legion Riders motorcycle club, but weren’t able
to because they hadn’t served in the U.S. military. While the Lake Geneva American Legion post has a squadron, Elkhorn American Legion Post 45 Commander Mark Gajewski said they would like to get their very own started as well. “There’s 108 Sons of the Legion squadrons in our state and there’s one in our county,” Gajewski said. “We’d like to make that 109 in our state and two in Walworth County. It’s the right thing to do.” It’s open to all male descendants, adopted sons and stepsons of members of the Legion, as well as all male descendants of veterans who died in service from April 6, 1917 to Nov. 11, 1918 or any time from Dec. 7, 1941 to present or died subsequent to their honorable discharge from service. So, adding the Sons of the Legion allows us that better flexibility and better visibility. I think there’s a lot of things going on in our community and this is our way of being able to tie into that better,” he added. The squadron will also take on its own community service projects. Membership in the Sons of the Legion is open to men and boys of all ages who are descendants of veterans or members of the American Legion. Current members of the Legion are also able to join the Sons squadron. Walk to End Alzheimer’s expected to raise more than $150,000 Walkers and teams from across the area participated in the 2021 Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Walworth County at Library Park in Lake Geneva this past fall. The walk rejoined in person last year, with the health and safety of participants, staff and volunteers remaining top priorities. The walk was anticipated to raise more than $157,000 to fund research and local services in Walworth County, including support groups, education, information and referral services, care and support, advocacy efforts and a 24/7 Helpline. “The Walk to End Alzheimer’s plays a critical role in advancing our mission in the fight against Alzheimer’s and other dementias,” said David Grams, executive director, Alzheimer’s Association Wisconsin Chapter. “We’re grateful for how the local community rallied together to bring awareness and funds to support our mission. Visitors Bureau names new executive director
T
he Walworth County Visitors Bureau announced the appointment of Tim Malenock as the organization’s new Executive Director this past spring. Malenock joined the WCVB with more than 12 years of experience in tourism for both the Chicago and Milwaukee markets and over 16 years of management experience in retail operations to the John G. Shedd Aquarium and the Milwaukee Art Museum. Most recently, Malenock served as
director of visitor services and group sales for the Milwaukee Public Museum where he curated relationships with organizations such as the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, Circle Wisconsin and Visit Milwaukee to promote Tim Malenock and market leisure and group tourism to the state of Wisconsin and the Milwaukee area. “Tim’s passion for the tourism industry combined with his non-profit attraction experience and his track record of building strong relationships will allow him to hit the ground running and take our organization to the next level,” Walworth County Visitors Bureau Board President Ellen Burling, said when he was hired. “We look forward to the impact Tim can have in our area as we work to enhance the economic vitality tourism brings to our area.” “During his tenure with the Milwaukee Public Museum, Tim collaborated with Circle Wisconsin on many group travel initiatives, programs and events including conferences,

The inaugural DAS Fest USA event was held in August of 2021 at the Walworth County Fairgrounds in Elkhorn, celebrated all things German, thanks to countless helpers, including Sarah and Grace Franz. Among the many features at the three-day event were: live entertainment by Glockenspiel; the Elkhorn Rotary Club-sponsored 5K (the winners of all categories gathered afterwards); and several dachshund races – complete with podiums for the top three; and numerous stein holding contests.
