Elkhorn Ribfest will celebrate its fourth year of good food, good music and good times July 11-14. Admission and parking are free and more than 60,000 visitors are expected this year to get a taste of the best BBQ in the nation. Professional BBQ companies from as far away as Australia and Jamaica will compete for your vote for the Ribfest trophy. There will be carnival rides for the young and young-at-heart as well as a craft artisan village and a tradeshow featuring everything from hot tubs to motorcycles. A community division BBQ competition will take place Sunday, July 14, allowing amateur backyard chefs to compete in a contest for the best ribs with judging done by professionals. Oktoberfest continues to grow and this will be its 14th year, held on Oct. 19. Thousands attend this great community event and explore over 130 crafters and vendors, a variety of food including a chili cook-off, live music, a classic car show, kids activities, other live entertainment and, for the adults – a wine and beer tasting tent. Known as Christmas Card Town, our Christmas parade is hitting its 38th year with many attending to see the floats, music, novelty acts and, of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus, on the first Saturday in December. You can also see them the night before the parade at the Town Tree
Lighting in the Square, Dec. 6 and at the Santa and Mrs. Claus Reception at Matheson Memorial Library following the tree lighting. But Elkhorn is much more than fun and games. A new but old tradition Saturdays on the Square returning to Elkhorn
Upon learning that the BY Heather farm market was not going to Ruenz continue, the chamber took EDITOR advantage of the opportunity to create an “ongoing destination that will appease to a broad audience,” according to Chris Clapper, executive director of the Elkhorn Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Center. The result will be a revamp of an old tradition in Elkhorn – Saturdays on the Square. “Saturdays on the Square used to be an event but fell by the wayside at some point. We’re looking at this as an opportunity to bring back something that was successful in the past and add some new twists,” Clapper said. She said the weekly event will feature a farm market element along with crafters, local food stands and a community counter. Local businesses can use it as an opportunity to show their products or share information and nonprofits, local clubs and organizations are also welcome. “They can fundraise, promote their
events and bring awareness to the public about what they do,” Clapper said. Saturday, May 18 will be the first Saturdays on the Square event and it will run every Saturday through Oct. 12 (other than July 6 and Aug. 31) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Veteran’s Park on the downtown square. Clapper said one of the exciting new ideas that will be included is having a feature and/or theme each week. “For example – and this is still in the early stages so just an example, but we’re hoping to partner with the library and have someone read books, or with the Park & Rec Department and maybe they offer activities or have a demonstration,” she said. “We’re now looking for people that have an idea for a theme or feature ask that they contact us so we can talk about it,” Clapper said, adding that depending on how different features are received, it may grow into regularly-scheduled events. Farm markets can be challenging, Clapper said, because there are so many

and a lot of vendors are committed to one, if not more but they came up with an idea that will help out vendors or local producers while offering attendees a variety of items to choose from. “We came up with the idea of having a community counter. Say someone grows the best strawberries or has the best jam, they can consign with us – though they must comply with all state laws – and we’ll sell their items at Saturdays on the Square at our community counter or counters, depending on how many items we have,” she said. Clapper said one of the keys to the community counter being successful will involve making certain there aren’t the same items available from multiple people. Applications to participate in Saturdays on the Square are available at the chamber and Clapper said anyone interested in learning more about this new take on an old event, or who has an idea for possible themes or features for it, should stop in at the chamber office, 203 E. HOLTON BAND keeps harmony IN ELKHORN BY

The Holton-Elkhorn Band dates to the 1840s but was officially incorporated as the Elkhorn Cornet Band in 1883. By 1912, began holding weekly concerts during the summer months, according to Wisconsin History records. During the 1920s, it was renamed the Holton-Elkhorn Band and the summer concerts continue today with six performances. It was by happenstance – or meant to be – that Fred Palmer, the current conductor and manager of the band, wound up in Elkhorn. “I was a UW-Whitewater grad assistant and my wife, two sons and I were driving back from Illinois to Whitewater. We went through Elkhorn and I saw the water tower with the horn on it and thought, ‘Wow! I bet they have a great music program.’ Back at UW-Whitewater I searched the job marketplace and there it was… EAHS was looking for a band director so I applied and got hired,” he said. Palmer, who retired from teaching at EAHS in 2011, has been directing the Holton band for the past 18 years. He was a member of the band – he plays trumpet – when its director at that time was Sue Swoboda, who taught band at the high school for two years before transferring to Elkhorn Area Middle School. “It’s according to Frank Holton’s will that the job goes to the high school band director,” Palmer said. “Sue was a wonderful director and when she retired, I slid over to the director’s seat,” Palmer added. “And now, the high school’s current director, Sarah Wuttke, directs a couple of pieces now and then so I can play.”
Self-recruiting
Palmer said the recruitment for the Holton-Elkhorn band generally takes care of itself. The members are paid – via funding from the Holton Foundation with additional support from the City of Elkhorn. “It’s one of the only bands in the area that pays its members. That limits how big I let the sections get but it always seems to work out. If we’re short a position, we find someone or they find us,” Palmer said. “It’s generally people that become accomplished with their instruments and want to use that talent. We all like to make music.” The band usually has between 40 and 44 members and everyone has his or her own equipment other than percussion, for which high school equipment is used. “Working with the school district is a great partnership,” he said.

Joy of making music
Palmer said the band features musicians anywhere between the ages of 16 and 80, including several area band directors and current or graduated UW-W music students. “If we get a gap, I’ll ask Sarah, ‘Hey, you got a good tenor sax player?’ or whatever and sure enough, she always does so that’s usually how the high school kids get involved,” he said. He said the bands at EAHS have always been strong but when you’re working with a band featuring numerous musicians who’ve played for 20-plus years, that takes it to a whole new level. “We’re in tune. They watch and listen and they’re right with me. It’s magical,” he said. Palmer said it’s challenging to keep favorite tunes while attempting to bring fresh selections into a line-up. “The Holton Band music library, which is at the high school, and the EAHS library, are both large so we rotate the music. Of course, I have my favorite pieces that will sneak in for several years but eventually we set them aside for a while,” he said. When prepping for a concert, Palmer and Wuttke will meet to pull the music – choose the pieces to play and place the music in the appropriate folders for each musician/ instrument chair. He said Swoboda taught him the
importance of mixing things up. “It’s important to have a variety and I try to always do some pieces the kids will enjoy, too, to keep it suitable for the whole family,” he said. In the summer, the band performs six consecutive Friday night concerts at Sunset Park beginning the third week in June. They rehearse on Thursday night and perform on Friday. The band also has an annual Christmas concert, which was moved to the auditorium at the high school this past year in an effort to accommodate more people than the previous venue of the Sprague Theater was able to do. For that concert the band rehearses twice that week. The Christmas concert is offered free of charge but does require tickets. The summer concerts are also free but do not involve tickets. Those concerts are held at Sunset Park in the bandshell and guests are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on. “The band is really a community effort that benefits the Elkhorn community, and is what the Holton family wanted to maintain,” Palmer said. A passion for their trade Flea market vendors embrace people, all things vintage
The Elkhorn Antique BY Bridget Bartal Flea Market at the STAFF WRITER Walworth County Fairgrounds holds more than 500 antique vendors and each vendor has a different approach for his or her booth. While items and interests varied across vendors, they all
to stick to mobile retailing, including flea markets. “People. I love networking with people,” he said. Wallem has a long-standing love for antiques. “As a kid, we’d climb into the town dump in Williams Bay, looking for antique stuff. I hope that the younger generation can enjoy this stuff and keep it around like I do,” he said. In recent years, antique items have become increasingly trendy. While most of the vendors said they were pleased vintage items continue to remain in circulation, some said they didn’t concern themselves with how popular something is. On antique flea market event days, the fairgrounds quickly fill up with customers and attendees often bargain over prices. In one case, a lengthy deal negotiated only a $2 price difference. The flea market runs from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., one Sunday a month beginning in May, rain or shine and admission is $5. Local teen earns Eagle Scout rank Austin Muetzel was recognized for BY Heather achieving Eagle Scout rank at his Eagle Ruenz Court of Honor and presented the merit EDITOR badge sash at a ceremony last fall. The main portion of Muetzel’s project involved a major cleanup effort at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Muetzel became involved in scouting in first grade when he joined Cub Scout Pack 225. He explained that he came up with the idea for the cemetery project during his confirmation class at St. Patrick Catholic Church. “We went to the cemetery during class to help with fall cleanup. The caretaker for the cemetery told us that he always appreciated extra help,” Muetzel said. He said he spoke to Ray Henderson and from there was connected to Paul Kremer, the caretaker. “We took a trip to the cemetery to see what needed to be done. Mr. Kremer pointed out that many of the headstones had dried grass, lichen, and other debris and needed cleaning,” Muetzel said. “Community service is important to Troop 243, so it wasn’t hard to find a group of scouts to assist me out,” he said. Muetzel said at the time he was pleased with the project. “I am glad that I was able to help out at the cemetery, as well as make an impression that will last,” he said. Muetzel, the son of Mike and Sandy, is a senior at Elkhorn Area High School.

Elkhorn’s Oral History Project unveiled When Ricky Collins first BY Cathy moved to Elkhorn in the Kozlowicz late 1980s, he remembers CORRESPONDENT that Two Seasons Bowling Alley was the main attraction of the city. “It was pretty wild,” Collins said in his audio interview that is a part of Elkhorn’s Oral History Project. His audio is posted on Elkhorn’s Matheson Memorial Library’s website. Moving to Elkhorn from a bigger city in Illinois to own a farm in 1988, he was surprised at how laid-back Elkhorn was. Not sure what to do initially, he found out about the bowling alley and thought it was perfect for families. He said that nearly all kids played baseball then, and families and kids had something to do. At the time, he added, there was miniature golf there. Collins was one of the 10 interviewees for Elkhorn’s Oral History Project that was unveiled Feb. 2 at Heritage Hall. The project is a partnership with the Matheson Memorial Library and the Walworth County Historical Society. In about a four-month span, the library and historical society selected a sample of residents to interview about their experiences in Elkhorn. The goal is to have people represented from each decade from about 1920 to today, according to Chad Robinson, Elkhorn’s Matheson Memorial Library Adult Services Librarian. The project is an online database that is accessible for free on the library’s website. The interviews consisted of feature stories from local farmers, shop owners, historians, civic and business people that relate to the early roots of Elkhorn to today. Robinson, who moved to Elkhorn with his family from Green Bay four years ago when he was hired at the library, said it’s important that the community’s history is preserved. Pat Blackmer, a volunteer with the historical society, said it was “wonderful” interviewing people about Elkhorn and said everyone who was asked agreed to be part of the project. “It was an absolutely brilliant thing to do. We had such a wonderful time interviewing. We have exceptional people in the town,” she said. The first 10 people who were interviewed were Ken Amon, Collins, Frank Eames, Dale and Gail Folkers, George Lauderdale, Bill Liner, Becky Merwin, Howard and Lois Powell, Larry Ramirez and Garry Wallem. The first question asked of Ramirez is, “What was your earliest memory of Elkhorn?” He said it was when he had a job he hated out of the city and went in to audition to test trumpets at Holton Band Company. He said 20 people auditioned and he got the job because he was able to play trombone in

addition to the trumpet. While it was a good job for him, Ramirez said nobody wanted to sit by him at lunch because he was Mexican, well almost nobody. “One did not care… he sat with me, and we started to be friends,” he said. When the company closed its Elkhorn site in 2008, Ramirez said on the last day, all the workers sat in the front office and cried. Merwin’s first exposure to Elkhorn was when she moved here in 1959 at the age of 11. She recalls first working to find a church to go to and said she enjoyed Elkhorn’s holiday tradition. “It was seeing all the decorations and learning that Elkhorn was the Christmas card town,” she said.
Merwin also mentioned that she attended Bowers Elementary School, which is no longer a school, and said she immediately joined 4-H to make friends. “It was a good experience being interviewed,” Merwin, who graduated from Elkhorn Area High School in 1966, said at the unveiling. “I love Elkhorn. I am a big fan.” Robinson said there will be more audio recordings added, and in time, written transcripts to go along with the videos. The stories can be listened to online at elkhorn. lib.wi.us/history. “I love the history of Elkhorn. The area has people moving in from all over. Spreading kindness, one act at a time EAHS accepts Rachel’s Challenge, hopes to reach beyond school walls
To ensure BY Heather students are treated Ruenz with respect and EDITOR not subjected to bullying, the Elkhorn Area School District implemented a program a few years ago. The OLWEUS Bullying Prevention Program is a comprehensive approach that includes school, classroom, individual and community components and has been found to reduce bullying, improve social climate of classrooms and reduce antisocial behaviors. Though OLWEUS has been successful, the district decided to expand this school year in an effort to have an even greater impact. “The districtwide antibullying program started with staff, but we decided to include students so reached out to Lily,” said Ryan McBurney, associate principal at Elkhorn Area High School. Lily Schwenk, a senior, is a member of the school’s leadership council. She said she was in the process of researching for possible programs when someone sent a link to Rachel’s Challenge. “I was really touched by it so took it to Mr. McBurney,” Schwenk said. Rachel’s Challenge is a legacy to Rachel Joy Scott, the first person killed in the Columbine High School shooting on April 20, 1999. “After her death, many students that Rachel reached out to shared stories with the Scotts about the profound impact her simple acts of kindness had on their lives, even preventing one young man from taking his own life,” it states on the Rachel’s Challenge website. In realizing the effect of her story, the nonprofit organization that is now Rachel’s Challenge was started. “In the 19 years since we lost 12 innocent lives, including Rachel, her legacy has touched 25 million people and is the foundation for creating programs that promote a positive climate in K-12 schools,” the site states.
“Her vision to start a chain reaction of kindness and compassion is the basis for our mission: Making schools safer, more connected places where bullying and violence are replaced with kindness and respect and where learning and teaching are awakened to their fullest,” it states. Scott deliberately reached out to three groups of people in high school and wrote about it in one of six diaries her family found after her death, the website states. “I want to reach out to those with special needs because they are often overlooked. I want to reach out to those who are new in school because they don’t have any friends yet. And I want to reach out to those who are picked on or put down by others,” she wrote.

McBurney agreed with Schwenk about Rachel’s Challenge being the key to expanding the efforts of antibullying locally so they ordered the video and scheduled an event at the high school. “The movie was shown to students and a lot of them emotionally connected, realizing that it can happen to anybody,” Schwenk said. “Students said they wanted to change how they treat people knowing they might not see them again.” Later that day, McBurney said staff and a group of student leaders had training on how to spread kindness and start a chain reaction. “We have great kids who are caring and good people, but it brought a deeper understanding that everyone has an impact on everyone else,” he said. The training involved further discussions and the sharing of ideas along with a plan to regroup and decide what to move forward with and when to implement it, Schwenk explained. As a result, several things have taken place at EAHS. “We have bathroom compliments, which is writing on mirrors so students see

positive ideas. We’re connecting different grades together outside of the current lunch schedule, which is seniors and freshmen, and sophomores and juniors,” Schwenk said. She said they’ve reached out to the chamber and are working to see how the efforts can be extended to the community. They’re also connecting the schools in an effort to make an easier transition from middle school to high school, for example. Members of the leadership council and OLWEUS have led the way, McBurney said. “We have the systems with OLWEUS and the leadership council to carry out those things, so Rachel’s Challenge is perfect for us,” he said. Schwenk said the leadership
council was formed last school year and is not forced or exclusive. “It’s for leaders from sports and clubs, to bring all of them together and feed off each other and get support for their ideas. They get followed through on when we support each other,” she said.

In what would be the final essay Scott wrote before dying, she shared her thoughts about the potential impact. “Compassion is the greatest form of love humans have to offer. I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go,” she wrote. On the back of Scott’s dresser is an outline she traced of her hands when she was 13 years
old, in which she wrote: “These hands belong to Rachel Joy Scott and will someday touch millions of people’s hearts.” Among those she touched are students, staff and community members in Elkhorn. “It’s not only about not bullying but also spreading kindness and being compassionate,” Schwenk said. ‘The future of healthcare is bright’ The Elkhorn HOSA BY Heather chapter took a record number Ruenz 26 students to compete at EDITOR the HOSA International Leadership Conference 2018 in Dallas last summer. Of that group, 19 students made it to the final round of their event, one team earned a fourth-place finish while another earned a top-10. “It was very successful for the Elkhorn HOSA students. There were 7,000 competitors and over 10,000 people who attended. We placed 4th in HOSA Bowl with a group of seniors who are incredible and our Public Health team consisting of
all freshman placed 8th,” advisor Stephanie Steinke said. HOSA-Future Health Professionals – formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America – is an international student organization, which aims to promote career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people. Steinke said the students put in a significant amount of time to prepare. “It’s difficult to describe the time commitment required to compete at this level in both of these events,” she said. “My heart is full. The future of healthcare is

bright.” Some EAHS students took the time to share what the experience was like for them. Anastasia Grochowski, a freshman who competed in Public Health, said her group spent nearly every homeroom from January to the end of the school year preparing. 2018 EAHS graduate Sarah Rychlak, who was at HOSA International Leadership Conference for the second time, was part of the HOSA Bowl team. “It’s an event where teams of three to four students compete head to head in a ‘quiz bowl’ setting. The questions cover health care related terms, HOSA information and history, and parliamentary procedure,” Rychlak said. Her preparation consisted of reading the reference textbooks and by making Quizlet flashcards with key terms. “Competing in HOSA Bowl this year provided me with an excellent opportunity to research and learn more about the field that I am about to enter. It also reinforced the importance of teamwork and cooperation to meet a common goal,” Rychlak said. Another graduate, Haley Annes, also a member of the HOSA Bowl team, said the experience was unique. “We (the team) were tested on everything from medical terminology and health innovations to the different types of fire extinguishers. Thanks to HOSA Bowl, I feel I’ve acquired a wider breath of knowledge about the healthcare field,” Annes said. Graduate Cameron Jacobson, said HOSA has laid the groundwork for her future. “I’m thankful for everyone I’ve grown closer to ... and I am anxious to continue my future in healthcare,” she added. 2019 ELKHORN OUR TOWN

A special night for Elkhorn baseball ‘Old’ guys edge out young Elks in annual alumni game

Last summer BY Heather the Elkhorn Ruenz baseball program EDITOR held its 2nd annual alumni game, which was entertaining in and of itself. But the most memorable moment for many present was a special ceremony to honor Roger Larsen for his lifetime support of the program. Joining Larsen at the July 18, 2018 event at Elkhorn Area High School was his wife, Katie, son, Eric, and daughters, Heidi McGraw and Libby Vanderveen, along with his son- and daughters-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The ceremony featured the revealing of a sign placed on the front of the new pressbox, honoring Larsen for his commitment to Elkhorn baseball. The two teams – one comprised of former Elks, the other of current summer players, lined the field to honor Larsen as he approached the mound to deliver the first pitch of the game. Jon Anzalone, head baseball coach and Community Engagement Coordinator for the Elkhorn Area School District, said Larsen has been a part of the Elkhorn baseball program for as long as he can remember. “Roger has taken on many roles over the years to enhance baseball. Beginning in 1955, he
has been an umpire, coach and volunteer recreation director as well as taking on responsibilities of field improvements, maintenance, and uniform and equipment purchasing for youth teams,” Anzalone said. He was also a longtime coach of Elkhorn’s Post 45 Legion Team and The Elkhorn Expo’s Home Talent Team. “Roger is not only a supporter of baseball but a caring husband, father, coach, mentor and friend to so many people,” Anzalone said. “I have great respect for Roger and the Larsen family.” Larsen, a 1950 Elkhorn High School alum, participated in • CONTINUED ON PAGE 24

both football and baseball. He then served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He was a charter member of the Elkhorn Booster Club now known as the Elkhorn Area All Sports Booster Club. “Roger was named Fan of the Year by the booster club. He has coached hundreds of athletes over the years and touched hundreds of lives in a positive way. It’s an honor to have his name shining bright at the field every day as a reminder of what it is to be a great person,” Anzalone said. “He is a great friend to baseball and the community and someone I have great respect for. It was an honor to be a part of this,” he added. Larsen was inducted into the Elkhorn Sports Hall of Fame in September along with his son, Eric.

The 2nd annual alumni game did not disappoint players or fans, according to Anzalone. After 7 innings the alumni team edged out the high school summer team 10-9, he said, but the game was close throughout. “It was a great game, back and forth

with several lead changes. (There’s) a lot of teasing back and forth between the high school guys and the alumni but everyone walked away without injury and with a smile,” Anzalone said. “It’s exciting to see all of the guys from years past and catch up on stories. A cookout is held afterwards and it’s a great time for all the players and their families to celebrate baseball and each other,” he added. Alumni team members included Joe Knopski, Ian Nowell, Lucas Harding, Dan Vandyke, Jordan Vandyke, Taylor Kawczynski, Zach Hunter, Darin Anzalone, Ross Ingersoll, Phil Wester, Danny Wester, Brandon Oglesby, Patrick Glogovski, Rodalfo Loredo, Matt Schnitzler, Dylan Peterson and Kyle Gosh.
A community effort
The press box, Anzalone said, was funded by private donations from local business and community members and the building was constructed by a team of parents, players and coaches. “Kelly Brazer, the mom of Nick and Jake Rockweiler led the charge organizing
and planning. Jason Brazer designed the structure and was one of the leads during the building process along with Bryan Johnson, of Johnson Home Improvements,” Anzalone said, adding that the City of Elkhorn was both gracious and helpful during the process. “It was a total community effort and Elkhorn Baseball is blessed to have such amazing players, parents, and community,” he said. In addition to the sign honoring Larsen, other signs will be placed on the building – one to thank the donors, another to recognize Elks baseball players that continue to play beyond high school. “We will also place a sign on the south side of the building honoring each alumni that has played college baseball. It will show their name and the logo of the school they attended,” Anzalone said. He said the new building wouldn’t have been possible without many people stepping forward to help. “Thank you to the parents, players and community for sharing in the vision. We live and play in a great place and the support is amazing,” he said.

The veterans BY Heather entered the Ruenz gymnasium at EDITOR Elkhorn Area High School on a Friday morning last November at varying paces. Some walked on their own accord, others with a cane or assistance while a few were pushed in wheelchairs – all of them treated to an escort by family members and students. All who had gathered for the fifth annual Veterans Day program – students, staff and community members – remained standing while the more than 90 guests of honor, the local heroes, made their
way down the center aisle, having just finished breakfast in the cafeteria. After VFW Post 6375 presented the colors and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited – led by Alexandra Moreno, students Annalise Ocken and Anna Krauklis sang the national anthem. Megan Degner shared the history of “The Star Spangled Banner,” which states that Francis Scott Key penned a poem in 1814 that was later set to music and in 1931 became America’s national anthem. and Caden Reece explained it’s held the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to commemorate the armistice signed between the allies of World War I and Germany, and is referred to as Armistice Day. “Unlike Memorial Day, set aside to remember those who died, Veterans Day is largely attended to thank living veterans throughout the United States,” Reece said. Principal Chris Trottier had a simple message for the veterans. “We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your service. We are grateful to have you here today,” he said.

After graduating from West Point, he became a platoon leader of the 2nd Infantry at Camp Hovey in South Korea, where he was responsible for training, discipline, combat readiness, morale and welfare of a 32-man reconnaissance platoon. He earned several promotions: in 2010, to executive officer of the 1st Calvary Division at Fort Hood in Texas; in 2012, to Assistant Operations Officer at Fort Hood; and in 2013, Troop Commander of the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart in Georgia. As commander, Mashack was responsible for training, combat readiness and the welfare of 84 soldiers. He planned training to ensure professional competency and was responsible for $85 million worth of equipment and weapons for combat readiness. Mashack said the last two words in the following verse are meaningful to many veterans: ‘I heard a voice saying, whom shall we send? Who will protect us? Then I said, ‘Here I am, send me.’ “Beyond taking the small step of raising their right hand while taking the oath and signing a contract, many veterans find themselves grappling with their ability to truly sacrifice themselves if needed, but ultimately decide they would do so,” Mashack said. He said serving in the military takes all kinds of sacrifices, from wanting a warm bed and dry clothes to yearning for a favorite meal. “Some miss their child’s first birthday, others their grandparent’s 90th,” he said. When he entered the academy, Mashack said he was confident about what it meant to be an American. “But I met kids from all over the country and beyond, others who had their own opinion about what it meant. Initially, this was very disconcerting to me, but eventually I realized we were all on the same team and at some point had each said, ‘send me,’” he said. “Your family, friends and communities are worth fighting for.”

One of the most touching parts of the program was a tribute to the armed services sung by the high school choir. The song featured a medley of military anthems, and as each branch began, the branch was called out with veterans who had served in it asked to stand. The EAHS band played “The Stars & Stripes Forever” featuring a piccolo solo by Amber Glassel, followed by a 21-gun salute by Post 6375 and the playing of taps by Noah Skilling. Following a moment of silence and the retirement of colors, a guest not on the program was then introduced. Terry Keyzer, who now lives in Rib Lake, attended Elkhorn Area High School in 1959 but was called to enlist in 1962 and later earned his GED. Last Friday, Sandy Jenkins escorted Keyzer to the stage, where Trottier presented him with an honorary diploma. Trottier brought the program to a close by requesting a final standing ovation for the veterans, and the crowd obliged with a lengthy, enthusiastic and appreciative applause. As students began filing out of the gym, those who had served as an escort for a veteran – some whom were relatives, others strangers prior to that morning – could be seen embracing the veteran and their family members.

For this year’s event at EAHS, Sandy Jenkins, the main organizer of the program – would like to create a local video. “Our students really embrace the program and respect all of the veterans,” Jenkins wrote on Facebook. “Next year we would like to create our own video. Saturdays on the Square A new but old tradition returns to Elkhorn this year with Saturdays on the Square. It will be held 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturdays in Veteran’s Park, beginning May 18 through Oct. 12 (other than July 6 and Aug. 31.) The weekly event will feature a farm market element along with crafters, local food stands and a community counter. There are also plans to offer weekly themes or activity, or to feature a local event or organization. In an effort to expand the community outreach at Saturdays on the Square, local clubs and nonprofits as well as businesses are welcome to show their products or share information.
