Another longstanding tradition you don’t want to miss out on is the 168th Walworth County Fair held over Labor Day weekend. Need a little more taste of “old?” See what treasures you can find at Elkhorn’s largest Antique Flea Market with over 500 vendors filling the fairgrounds. Some new traditions have been made as well. Such as Elkhorn’s Star Spangled Celebration in Sunset Park where the whole family can enjoy a free concert, kid’s activities, food, snacks, and fireworks at dusk. Community Days of Elkhorn will be held June 16-19. Elkhorn Ribfest will celebrate its second year of good food, good music and good times. Admission and parking are free

and over 40,000 visitors are expected this year to get a taste of the best BBQ in the nation. Professional BBQ companies from as far away as Australia and Jamaica will compete for your vote for the Ribfest trophy. Corn and Brat Days will be on Aug. 4 and 5, and the Elkhorn Area Chamber of Commerce will provide great food, crafters, music around the downtown square. Oktoberfest continues to grow and this will be its 12th year. Thousands attend this great event and can explore over 130 crafters and vendors, a variety of food including a chili cook-off, live music, classic car show, kids activities, other live entertainment, and for the adults, a wine and beer tasting tent.

Above & beyond Elkhorn postmaster helps father and son get to Packers game By Heather Ruenz

ny fan of the green and gold will likely say attending a Green Bay Packers game at Lambeau Field is an opportunity too good to pass up. One local fan found himself in the stands, cheering “Go Pack Go!” alongside his son, thanks to the intervention of what he described as a “special lady.” Jeff Ingersoll, Elkhorn, heard two tickets for the Jan. 8 Wild Card game between the Packers and the New York Giants in Green Bay were available from his mom. “My cousin had two tickets available and Jeff wanted them so he could take his son to the game,” Kathy Ingersoll, Jeff’s mom, said. Her cousin, who lives in Minnesota, put the tickets in the mail early the week of the game but they didn’t arrive in a couple of days as expected. “I contacted the Elkhorn Post Office and talked to Karen Babcock, the Postmaster. She worked on it for us for three days, tracing it and kept in touch with us constantly,” Kathy Ingersoll said. “She told us her husband is the biggest Packers fan so she was going to figure this out.” Though she was able to trace the envelope to a couple of locations, it eventually became clear the tickets had been lost in the mail and, even if located, would not make it to Elkhorn in time for Jeff and Josh Ingersoll to make it to the game. That’s when Babcock took matters into her own hands, literally, by writing a letter to the ticket office officials at Lambeau Field. “She basically took the blame for the tickets not being delivered and Jeff and Josh took that letter with them to Green Bay. It wasn’t easy but they were eventually able to convince security to let them talk to someone higher up and they made it to their seats in time for the flyover,” Kathy Ingersoll said. The extra efforts of Babcock, she said, deserved recognition. “Karen went out of her way as a Postmaster and just a good citizen. When there’s so much bad, heart-wrenching news out there, I think she needs to be commended for what she did,” Kathy Ingersoll said. “Postal employees get a bad rap a lot of times but they’re so busy and this is a good example of one of them, right here in Elkhorn, going above and beyond to help someone out.” Earlier this week, Jeff Ingersoll stopped by the Elkhorn Post Office to thank Babcock personally, with a hug and a gift. “It meant a lot that you made sure we could get to that game and I wanted to stop by and thank you,” Jeff Ingersoll said. Babcock, who was clearly surprised and touched by the gesture, said her reason for helping the Ingersoll family was simple. “It was the Packers! I had to do whatever I could to make sure we got you there,” she said. It’s likely Babcock would have gone above and beyond even if it wasn’t to help a father and son get to a Packers game, and the effort she put forth is something Jeff Ingersoll said he is very appreciative of. “Everyone is so busy. Josh lives and works in Madison. That’s not too far but it’s far enough that I don’t get to see him as much as I’d like to,” he said. “Going to that game with him was special and we couldn’t have done it without Karen’s help.” Green Bay defeated the New York Giants 38-13 that day, in the final home game of the season.

Elkhorn Ribfest brings the BBQ to town Event features rib competition, live entertainment and more By Kellen Olshefski

he Walworth County Fairgrounds held its first ever Elkhorn Ribfest, a national rib competition, last July and the goals of organizers were met and exceeded. “…Our expectations are just for everybody to have fun and enjoy the food, music…” Walworth County Fairgrounds General Manager Larry Gaffey said prior to last year’s fest. The three-day event, slated for July 1416, will again center around a national rib competition, featuring barbecue pitmasters from around the nation including as far as Australia and Jamaica, some of whom have already won national competitions. The event will again be held on the fairgrounds. Gaffey said prior to the inaugural event, barbecue companies would compete against each other for a people’s choice award for their ribs, brisket, pulled pork and chicken,

and sauce, with visitors voting on a paper ballot or through a QR code on their smartphones. Additionally, national barbecue companies sell their products to the public over the three-day event. The event also features a community division, a competition for those who don’t necessarily do it professionally, judged by the professionals on Sunday. On top of barbecue, there are a variety of other food vendors and there are some new additions planned for this year’s event. Carnival rides will be on site for the young and young at heart, a craft artisan village will also be featured, displaying everything from hot tubs to motorcycles, according to Chris Clapper, director of the Elkhorn Area Chamber of Commerce. However, the fun doesn’t stop there as the event will again feature live music all day, all three-days: from noon to 11 p.m., Friday, and from noon to 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. “That’s the idea, for families to come out and have a good time,” Gaffey said last summer. “If you want to hang around and listen to some music later in the night, we’ve got that too.” The Elkhorn Rotary Club will again be serving beer, Miller products, over the course of the weekend and is being sponsored by numerous area businesses and organizations with major contributions from Frank’s Piggly Wiggly, of Elkhorn, additional sponsorship by Miller Motors and Kunes Country Auto Group, and the Lake Geneva House of Music, which assists in lining up the musical acts.

An idea is born Looking to bring something new to the fairgrounds last year, Gaffey said he had seen a similar event about 20 years ago, which immediately popped into his head. He said what started off as a free event 20 years ago in that community has now grown to be an event with full-blown concerts. “I saw another community do it, thought it was really neat and people seemed to enjoy it, so I thought, why not try it here,” he said. With nothing similar really going on in the area, Gaffey said he reached out to some large barbecue companies last year to see if they were interested in this type of event and that got the ball rolling.

Regional pros Last year, two regional companies competed in the professional division in the annual event: LD’s BBQ, of East Troy and BBQ King Catering out of Woodstock, Ill. To put a little perspective to the quality of pitmasters being brought in for last year’s event, Gaffey said BBQ King Catering recently took first place in both the Chicago and Windy City barbecue festivals. “They’re all champions and we’re just kind of excited to see how our local guys do up against these big national companies,” he said. “It’ll be really neat to see what the

mmanuel Baptist Church, 920 Highway H, in Elkhorn celebrated the church’s 50th anniversary with several events last May. The two-day celebration began with a picnic and open house. On Sunday, the church hosted special services beginning at 9:30 a.m. with “Echoes from Emmanuel: A Brief History of EBC.” The service highlighted the church’s history through multiple media, including some recently converted 8mm film from the construction of the church in 1971. The church’s regular Sunday service followed. Following services, a luncheon was

held and the anniversary celebration wrapped up with several guest speakers including former pastors Richard Eckman and Victor Koshir and current Pastor Paul Vawter. The church was originally formed out of a bible study in December 1964, which met in Elkhorn City Hall. The church’s Articles of Incorporation were approved by the state in November 1965 and the church’s first Sunday morning service was held on Dec. 5, 1965, in the home of Alexander and Winifred Piek, who lived at 420 W. Walworth St. After holding services at several different locations throughout the 1960s the first service at the church’s current location was held on Dec. 19, 1971. Cancer Assault Challenge

he fifth annual Cancer Assault Challenge is set for May 21 and if the growing event continues on the course it did last spring, it’ll be another banner year for the event. This year’s event will again feature two challenging obstacle courses, fit for runners of all skill levels out at Lutherdale Ministries, N7891 Highway 12, Elkhorn. Courses include a 5K run with 10-12 obstacles made up of water, climbing, endurance and “lots of mud.” For those who might find the 5K daunting, the event also features a 1-mile, obstacle “couch potato” course, designed for adults of all ages and children aged 6 and older. This year’s beneficiaries of proceeds raised through the event will include: the MACC Fund; Badger Childhood Cancer Network; Gilda’s House, and; ACF Camp Day. “The Assault Challenge Foundation is very excited to partner with the MACC Fund this year,” Lopez said last year. “The extraordinary work that they have done has affected many in the state of Wisconsin and across the country. We look forward to working together to make a difference.” The gates open at 8 a.m. and the race begins at 9 a.m. “We are hosting the Cancer Assault Challenge in an effort to help raise awareness in our community. Cancer strikes our friends and families every day, so help us by getting a little dirty and raising money to help continue the research

The Cancer Assault Challenge is the brainchild of Julie and Henry

Lopez, who, after being involved in a number of small events, said they felt their efforts would be better served by coordinating one large event that was more locally focused. In 2015, the Lopez’s founded the Assault Challenge Foundation, and, along with board members, aimed to create an event that would appeal to the families and youth in the community, both as a “fun event and training ground for young people to grow their volunteer tools and skills,” the site states. The following levels of sponsorship are available: premier sponsor, $2,500, platinum sponsor, $1,000; gold sponsor, $500; obstacle sponsor, $250; silver sponsor, $100; bronze

sponsor, $50; water sponsor (bottled water at water stops and the finish line.) Sponsors will be recognized in a variety of ways, dependent on sponsorship level, including: banners, promotional materials, sponsor boards on event day, and public announcements during the event. Premier and platinum sponsors will also receive VIP participant entries and booth space for the day of the event. Volunteers are needed for a variety of positions including: assisting in parking vehicles, setting up obstacles in the days preceding the event, helping sign-up participants, promoting the event and clean up after the event. Last year’s annual Christmas parade in Elkhorn makes its way through the downtown area for the 35th time. It featured a gingerbread man, fire trucks and rescue vehicles, local schools, music, businesses and organizations – many of them tossing out candy to parade-goers, just hours before the first real snow of the season hit the area.
