Elkhorn powerlifting squad hosts regional, qualifies for state By Jennifer Eisenbart EDITOR
anuary’s Wisconsin High School Powerlifting Association Region 5 meet at Elkhorn started off in a joking matter. Elkhorn coach Chad Stoltz called the WHSPA Region 5 president looking for competitions to schedule. “He mentioned that currently teams have been in flux with COVID-19 concerns,” Stoltz explained. “He jokingly asked if we could host a meet knowing we had a small team. “I told (him), ‘let me think about it and I’ll get back to you,’” Stoltz added. After months of planning by Stoltz and other members of the Elkhorn administrative team – including athletic director John Handel, Jon Anzelone and Dan Kiel – the dream of a meet came to fruition last weekend. “Hosting a meet is a massive undertaking by the school and community,” Stoltz said. “(Administration) helped us figure out a date and gratefully bent over backwards to make it happen.” The end result for Elkhorn was its best-ever finishes. With only a handful of lifters over the last two years, this time the Elks fielded a team of 20 and finished the day with six state qualifiers. Last year, the Elks had three state qualifiers, but the meet was canceled due to the pandemic. The meet format is straightforward but time consuming. Athletes compete in a variety of weight classes, competing in three different disciplines – squat, bench and deadlift. Each lifter gets three attempts at each discipline to get the highest total possible, while also being judged on proper technique. Lifters compete in the “raw” category – which means lifting in a singlet and weight belt – and “equipped,” which includes additional equipment to aid in lifting more weight. “A typical meet will go from 9 a.m. to about 4 p.m.,” Stoltz explained. “I was absolutely shocked that we were able to get this meet done by 3 p.m. and after awards we were all out by 4 p.m. “That is a huge undertaking for people helping with this meet,” Stoltz said. “Everyone in the community and the powerlifting community just simply stepped up and made it run so smoothly. I was greatly appreciative of their efforts.” Among those who helped was the Elkhorn Area School District IT department, volunteers across the board and Elkhorn assistant coach Courtney Carrao. As far as the results went, Elkhorn had a powerful overall performance. Addie Griffiths, Kenzie Calvillo, Maddie Stoltz, Macy Rocha, Lea Connolly and Jessica Haggerty all met the qualifying standards for the state meet while competing in the raw category. Griffiths finished second at 242 pounds, while Calvillo was third at 165 pounds. Marianna Axtman was second at 148 pounds, while Connolly was first at 148 pounds. Rounding out the top finishers was Haggerty, who won at 114 pounds. Mya Alverez was second at 148 pounds in the junior varsity class. The Elkhorn girls also won the varsity crown in the raw category. For the boys, CJ Ketelsen – who is also a member of the varsity basketball team – finished third for the men in the 165-pound weight class. “Our lifters did a great job at the meet,” Stoltz said.
