Online market launches amid pandemic

With the delay in opening a traditional farmers market amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce, with the help of Dither Studio, is launching a new online farmers market: East Troy Market. “This crisis has really magnified something we’ve known for a long time –consumers want local food. We had to figure out a way to get it to them safely while making sure we have a market for years to come,� said Vanessa Lenz, East Troy Chamber Executive Director. “Our market accomplishes both goals, letting you support farmers, artisans and businesses you know and delight in delicious food and one-ofa-kind items every week.� Shop the market at easttroy.market and place orders each week (item ordering times vary). Enjoy the convenience of online ordering with items from local vendors. All local meat, produce, honey, eggs, bakery, cheese, flowers and more directly from the best farmers and artisans in the East Troy area to you. Curbside pickup is at 6 p.m. on Friday at East Troy Village Square Park, 2881 Main St. The market opened with safety protocols in place for vendors and shoppers to prevent the spread of COVID-19. “The market is an important place for local farmers, producers and small businesses to sell their goods, support the local economy, and support the health of our community,� Lenz said. T-shirt campaign gives back to local business Times are tough for East Troy’s small businesses shuttered because of the coronavirus pandemic. East Troy has launched a community-wide effort to help with its latest T-shirt campaign: East Troy, Here for Good. Buying one of the campaign shirts is a way to support local and keep East Troy businesses here for good. For every T-shirt sold, $10 will go back to the featured business or organization. All shirts are designed and printed by local artist Sarah Manke. “This is my way of helping, giving back to a community that has given me so much over the years,� said Manke. The Here for Good campaign initially originated at a print job in St. Louis,

The state’s restaurant industry has been navigating unchartered waters during the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, but East Troy’s eateries are finding creative ways to keep their doors open and feed their community. Here’s what East Troy restaurants are doing to keep business alive.
Innovation at East Troy Brewery
Without inside dining due to the statewide Stay-At-Home order, takeout has become a lifeline for East Troy Brewery in recent months. Like many businesses, the brewery, located on the southwest corner of the East Troy Village Square, 2905 Main St., had to make an abrupt transition to carry-out. “We have had to adjust and pivot, and we were fortunate to be able to do that quickly,� said East Troy Brewery head chef Ashley Turner. “The change of platform did mean that unfortunately some of our favorites (we see you, cheese curds & chicken sandwich) weren’t ideal to continue as carry-out, so we adjusted to products that tended to hold and travel well, such as our pizzas and tacos.� The locally-owned brewery, which opened

Q&A with Community Center New hub continues to connect & serve
With gathering and events severely limited, the East Troy Area Intergenerational Community Center has continued to find ways to connect. The center, in its sixth month of operation, was forced to close in recent weeks as part of the statewide effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Because the shelter-in-place orders are such new terrain, the community center has worked hard to figure out how to adapt to the situation daily. While its programming can’t continue as normal for a bit, the center’s leaders Lloyd Sineni and Martha Bresler have found ways to continue to serve their community, including a big push to support those in need. Q. How did the concept for the East Troy Community Center come about?

A. The community center was a grass roots idea, begun when Kiwanis members Tony and Theresa Barrett suggested the organization create a legacy project that would meet present and/or future needs in the East Troy community. Surveys and research identified three needs – additional senior living space, a new

• Community Center library, and a community center- and the UGET (United Greater East Troy) steering committee was formed to lead the project. After additional research, on-site visits and lengthy discussions with area groups, UGET sought to combine the three needs into one project with a library and community center on one floor and additional floors above for senior living. Unfortunately, these studies also proved that both the library and senior housing components would have long timelines due to government requirements and the significant funding that would be required. A subcommittee of UGET became interested in a standalone community center that would specifically focus on intergenerational activities. It seemed from that point on that the project was meant to be. Unused space was leased from the school district, IGET (Intergenerational East Troy) attained a 501(c) designation and a new community center was born, opening its doors to the public on Sept. 9, 2019. Q. Tell us about the space & programming. What was your goal when determining offerings? A. We have designed it to be multipurpose and reconfigurable to fit any use required. The space consists of a Common area with café style setup and couch seating area, Meeting/Movie room seating 40 featuring a 120-inch projection screen, Game room with pool table, pinball and arcade games, air hockey, ping pong, pinball, Lego’s and games. An outdoor seating area, play space and community garden are planned for this summer. The building is ADA compliant, secure single door access with a large close parking lot. Q. What’s your favorite thing about the Community Center? A. The people we have come to know because of the center and its work are at the top of the list. From the wonderful volunteers who welcome visitors, answer questions, and pitch in for our programs and events to the support we have had from the school district along with teachers and students; to the amazing community residents we have had the opportunity to meet and appreciate. Also a favorite is the freedom we have to create opportunities for residents of the community.

serve the East Troy community? A. A group of volunteers have offered to deliver items from the food pantry, pharmacy and local churches. Additionally, we have organized a Community Meal program in alliance with the six major churches, civic organizations and business owners. The intent is to provide a bimonthly family size meal for those in need. A wonderful outcome of the meal program was pointed out by Joyce Reed with St. James UMC. Never in her memory have the six major churches came together for a single cause. Add the support of civic, business owners and citizen donations, it really illustrates the true spirit and power of the full community coming together to support those in need. Q. How do you hope the East Troy Community Center will play a role in East Troy’s future? A. We hope to become an important part of the area’s collective community service efforts, while providing a secure space for families and people of all ages to come together. When the center reopens, we will begin a program for homebound seniors, career resources, a workforce development roundtable and various state and county social service programs.

boat access site is located on Wilmer’s Landing in the Town of East Troy. No additional watercraft is permitted after the 29-space parking lot is filled. JET SKI ON POTTER’S LAKE A 155-acre lake located in the Town of East Troy, has a maximum depth of 26 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from a public boat landing with access off County Road L. Fish include Panfish, Largemouth Bass and Northern Pike.

Michael Fields welcomes new Show support face, addresses key farming issues for East Troy Dr. Tautges joined Michael Fields Research Department in May. She most recently worked as a Cropping Systems Scientist at UC Davis’s Russell Ranch Sustainable Agriculture Facility. A key part of her research responsibilities Dr. Tautges at MFAI will be developing practical research trials centered around organic and ecological management practices on the Institute’s 200-plus acre certified organic demonstration farm. Dr. Tautges is a native of Southeastern Wisconsin and said she will bring her passion for dairy cropping systems and forage research to the new position. Sustainable Ag Michael Field’s innovative research program is answering questions critical to agricultural sustainability. “Long-term agro-ecological research measuring the impact of agricultural practices on soil health and productivity is being conducted to improve the environmental footprint of U.S. agriculture,” according to MFAI. Building on her background in regenerative management, Dr. Tautges

The East Troy Electric Railroad has been among East Troy’s attractions that were forced to close amid Wisconsin’s stay-at-home order to slow the spread of coronavirus. The East Troy Electric Railroad said it is hopeful to start running some regular trains and all of its Dinner Trains in June with new social distancing and safety measures in place. will begin conducting research on MFAI’s organic demonstration farm, off Highway J, Northwest of East Troy. She said some of her 2020 growing season research trials will include intercropping rye with soybeans as a living mulch for weed mitigation in organic soy production systems; old alfalfa stand rejuvenation; and identifying summer cover crop species that build soil health and contribute to forage stockpiling. “By serving the needs of agriculture in our
region, the Institute supports all who share the belief that resilient, healthy food and farm systems are possible,” MFAI said. MFAI’s mission is to help rural and urban farms and agricultural communities in Wisconsin and beyond be healthy environmentally, economically, and socially through research, education and policy work. “MFAI is addressing the issues we face today, including fertility of the soil, purity of water, resources, climate change and healthy foods,” MFAI said.
East Troy students continue learning online The East Troy Community School District will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year as part of Gov. Tony Evers extended Safer-at-Home order to contain the spread of the coronavirus in Wisconsin. The district has been working hard to ensure virtual learning continues for students. Here are some updates:
School Meals
The district is currently providing meals, free of charge, to all children under age 18. Meal pick up is Monday-Friday at the East Troy Middle School auditorium entrance between 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Battle Bags remain available during the school designated breakfast/lunch pick up times, Monday-Friday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at East Troy Middle School. Simply ask for a battle bag with the number of lunches you are requesting.
Summer School online
East Troy Community Schools are preparing to offer virtual summer school courses for its students. “We believe these virtual courses will
provide a great opportunity for students of all grade levels to connect with others and stay engaged over the summer months, the district said in a statement. “We are heartbroken that we cannot hold the traditional summer school experience, therefore ETCSD is working hard to utilize this opportunity to provide a unique and memorable experience for our students and families.” Summer school will still be held between these dates: • Little Prairie (4K-2): June 22-July 16 • Prairie View (3-5): June 22-July 16 • Middle School (6-8): June 22-July 16 • HS Credit Recovery (9-12): June 22-July 16 • HS For-Credit (9-11): June 15-July 16 Courses that will not be offered virtually have been removed from the available options. during the situation by honoring their students digitally. With the pandemic altering graduation ceremonies, the district is making sure its seniors are still recognized for their achievements with a new section on their website called Senior Spotlights. The section highlights this year’s seniors’ accomplishments, future plans, extracurricular activities and more.
“I hope this communication finds you well. If anything, this safer-at-home order has allowed us to slow down, reflect and reevaluate what is important to us. Speaking for myself, I have enjoyed spending more time with my family. “Although staying at home isn’t an easy task for our social culture, hopefully you have found solace in virtual conversations and YouTube – endless opportunities to watch railroad videos! “As far as things on the railroad go, the safety of all members and guests remains our number one priority. We look forward to reopening when it is safe to do so. “Until that time, we have posted several updates on social media to keep everyone engaged in our Museum. “Since special events make up a little more than one third of our total operating revenue, the cancellation of our Bunny Trains has hit us hard and delaying the start of our season isn’t helping either. Just as you have bills that keep coming in, we do as well. Things like utilities and insurance continue despite pausing our operations. “It is because of this situation that an anonymous donor has offered to match up to $2,000 donated as unrestricted funds to the Museum from now until July 22, 2020. “If you are able to support us at this time, I would ask that you consider doing so. “Donations can be made by check to: East Troy Railroad Museum, Inc. Turner said they brought in equipment such as a smoker and outdoor grill in order to open the season with patio service happening directly outside. “We have been working steadily to build those processes and menu items,” Turner said. “Smoke is not only a process, but also an ingredient where I’m from, and we’ve been thinking of it that way, smoking duck, and salmon, sweet potatoes, sauces and even cheese as part of our summer flavors and new items. “Necessity is always a mother of invention in a kitchen, and so certainly a number of new items have been born that way during all of this, but also, our team has really pushed to stay forward-looking.” The stay-at home directive has also illustrated the brewery’s ability to innovate when it comes to its drinks. The brewery has used the recent weeks as a chance for reinvention with some fun and playful things, such as batched cocktails, Brew’d Bloody Mary’s made with East Troy Brewery Stout, and the nostalgic ETHS German Hamburger Roll – a fun throw-back for all East Troy High School alumni. East Troy Brewery head Brewer Ryan Hammerel has put the focus on familiar favorites along with creative releases, including a collaboration with Grebe’s Bakery on a Cruller Beer. “One thing that I have done during this time is a lot of research on new trends in the beer making world, as in Smoothie or Slushy beers, Peanut Butter Porter, new styles of Hazy IPAs etc.” Hammerel said. East Troy Brewery is gearing up for several beer releases this summer. “I will be bringing back some of last summer’s favorites like the Honeydew Melon Saison, the Hefeweizen, and a strawberry beer recipe that I had from a few years back,” Hammerel said. He said the brewery has received lots of support from the community. “It is amazing. Supporting breweries through these times is going to keep us alive in the craft world,” he said. “Altogether, we’ve been oriented around not only surviving today, but growing tomorrow,” added Turner. She said she has big plans for the brewery’s summer menu, which leans into the bright flavors of the season and all of the farm-fresh veggies. “Being able to enjoy a beer in the Wisconsin sunshine with a great meal... well, that keeps us working ahead, and until then we’re here, carrying-out and carrying-on.” For more information, visit etbrew.com

Opening a new restaurant is a very well-orchestrated affair and the COVID-19 crisis hit in the middle of Sauced, a pizzeria’s, soft opening.
