The Delavan Train Show returns for another run March 10 and 11 in downtown Delavan. The show, which remains free, will feature more than 40 train exhibits in 18 downtown locations, many with operating layouts, at the American Legion Hall, 111 S. Second St. Each of the other locations is within walking distance of the Legion Hall. A trolley will also run between locations. “There’s so much heart and soul putting into this and we just love seeing enjoyment on the kids’ faces, and adult faces, as they come through,” Delavan Train Show Team member Dawn Froncek said. The show was created by Brad and Sara Deschner 12 years ago when their son, Kyle, expressed interest in trains. Last year the Deschners handed over the reins to the Train Show Team and stayed on in an advisory capacity.

Froncek said this year, the team took over completely and has been busy planning the show and its future. Froncek is with the Walworth County Visitors Bureau and Visit Delavan and handling the marketing for the show. “We have our responsibilities broken into areas. Someone handles exhibitors, someone handles the locations, someone it handling the volunteers, and so on. We’re a team of community individuals working together.” Froncek said the team’s goal for the future is to keep the show a free, family friendly event and to expand the offerings each year. New this year is an exhibit by the Center for Railroad Photography and Art called “Faces of

Railroading: Railroads and the Making of Madison and Dane County. The exhibit will be at the Aram Public Library, 404 E. Walworth Ave. “We were also looking at a vendor aspect for this year, with exhibitors selling memorabilia, model trains, equipment, etc. but it wasn’t coming together like we wanted so we put it on hold so we can do it right in 2019,” Froncek said. Exhibitors create family friendly layouts for the show, some of which have seek-and-find activities, others that have buttons to operate accessories on the layout and others that allow spectators to act as a train engineer. “Our exhibitors continue to come back year after year; they love what we do,” Froncek said. “Our locations are repeating from year to year as well, so they’re enjoying the experience, too. And, of course, the people keep coming back.” Last year, more than 6,000 visitors attended the show. “We have the trackless train again this year, which adds extra fun for kids of all ages,” Froncek said. One of the things the show features are several hands-on exhibits, which is a little different than a regular train show, Froncek said. “They can play train engineer on some of the exhibits and the kids have such fun with that,” she said. Froncek said the Walworth County 4-H has added a model

railroad category to the 2018 Walworth County Fair lineup and she was hoping to see youth from the area attend the show. “The kids can come to the show and ask questions, make connections and get ideas for their fair displays,” she said. “We’re also hoping that the kids who enter railroad displays at the fair will be interested in exhibiting at the 2019 Train Show. We’re excited about the potential for that.”

Admission and parking are free at the Train Show. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, and raffle and door prizes will be offered.
