Pre-owned boat sales skyrocket Shrinking inventory squeezes market
Do you have a boat you’re thinking of selling? Maybe you want to upgrade or are taking a year off. No matter your reason for selling a boat, now is the ideal time to list it, sell it quickly and make top dollar for it. The global market analysis report from Boat Trader found the surge in consumer demand for boats that began at the start of the pandemic continued to surge through 2021. The wave continues into 2022 as more people look to get out and enjoy time on the water with friends and family. Although there are plenty of interested buyers, boat inventory remains low, which means boats are selling much faster and for higher prices. In 2021 compared to 2020, days on the market were down globally by 100 days and by 50 days in the U.S. What’s more, the overall value of sold boats skyrocketed across the globe, surpassing 2020 values by 34%. Demand and boat values are expected to increase throughout 2022, particularly for pre-owned boats. Inventory constraints continue, creating a limited supply of new boats, so as more people want to get on the water, they are looking to pre-owned options to fill their water lust. Many boat manufacturers have reported they are sold out of inventory for at least the upcoming season. In future years, they are hopeful supply chain issues will resolve and more inventory will be available. Additionally, some market experts expect interest rates to increase in the future, which will likely drive down the value of boats. What does this mean if you’re a boat owner thinking of selling or upgrading? Now is the time to take action so you can get the most money while demand is high and values are up. “People can get top dollar for their pre-owned boats as demand continues to outpace supply,” said Brian Wolf, chief operating officer, at Boat Trader, America’s largest boating marketplace. “The key is to list your boat in a way that boosts appeal while providing ample information to anyone actively looking to buy.” Listing on a marketplace like Boat Trader that specializes in only boats helps target highly qualified shoppers. Summertime, time to head out of doors and enjoy the beauty of outdoor life, away from the hustle and bustle of the stress of our work lives. In the Southern Lakes area, head to one of the beautiful lakes to relax and enjoy the beauty of the water. With a variety of lakes to choose from in the area, finding the one that best meets your needs is easy. Whether you looking for a busy, bustling lake with lots of activity, or a calm quiet area to relax, there is sure to be one that is perfect for your needs. Boating Summer means taking to the water to enjoy a day of fun in the sun and usually that means a watercraft of some type is involved. While years ago, the pontoon boat was thought of as the slow moving boat, the ones used to take the older members of the family for a ride, today the pontoon is considered the most popular and one of the most versatile boats on the water.
Today’s pontoon comes in a variety of sizes to accommodate larger numbers of guests. They also have more powerful engines making it possible to water ski or tube behind the boat. They are versatile and can be used for fishing, or after a time of cruising along the lake, you may find the perfect spot to stop, drop anchor and let everyone swim off the back of the boat. With so many lakes available in the southern Wisconsin area, there is sure to be one that will provide the perfect place for your day on the water. If you are not fortunate enough to own a boat, but still want to spend time out on the water, there are a many places along the lakes where the boat of your choice can be rented for the day, the weekend, or a week. Pick the lake you want to boat on and call one of the local boat rental companies for rental costs and types of craft available. Boat clubs are available which allow you the use of a boat for a certain number of days a year. A great choice if you live on or near a lake and plan to be out on the water often.

Find a beach in Lake County Lake County is lucky to be the home of more 200 lakes and miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, and that means that it has all kinds of beaches. Check the Lake County Beach Advisory page at www. lakecountyil.gov for daily updates on inland and Lake Michigan beaches. Grab a towels, pull out the aqua toys, apply the sunscreen, find a good spot in the sand, kick back and relax, because life’s a beach sometimes. Before renting a boat, visit the lake to see how busy they are on the day of the week you wish to be on the water. Weekends are busier than week days especially on larger and very popular lakes such as Geneva Lake. “Lake Mary and Lake Elizabeth in Twin Lakes, are more peaceful, relaxing lakes and if you can sneak a day off during the week, it is like being on a private lake,” said Dave Lang, who along with Ryan La Meer owns Twin Lakes Boat Rental. In the State of Wisconsin, if you were born after Jan. 1, 1989, you must be boater certified by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to rent a watercraft. The course is available online and there is a $10 fee to issue the certification after passing the exam. “We recommend reserving your boat as soon as possible, especially for the weekends,” Lang said. “We have some customers who have already reserved boats for every weekend through Labor Day. It is never too soon to do so.” Personal watercraft If you are looking for a more personal water riding experience, the JetSki or a wave runner may be just for you. Holding from 1 to 3 people as it zips through the water, the thrill of speed is what often attracts riders to choose this method of fun on the water.
The stand-up PWCs are more difficult to drive than those that allow one to sit and drive. The standup requires more balance and only one person can be on the jet ski at a time. Sit-down PWCs can hold from 1 to 3 riders, depending on the size. For those who enjoy the thrill of speed, the jet ski can exceed speeds of 40 miles per hour with some going up to 70 miles per hour. Speed is dependent on the power of the jet ski, the calmness of the water, wind resistance and the weight of the passengers. So, if you have the need for speed enjoy some time on a jet ski but do so safely. Riding a jet ski can be a day of fun on the water. Safety is important. Always wear a personal flotation device (life jacket) and get instruction on riding the jet ski before going out the first time. If it is your own jet ski, have it serviced at the beginning of the season and as needed. Kayaks, paddleboards Motor-driven watercraft are not the only way to enjoy being on the water. Kayaks, rowboats and paddle boards are enjoyable ways to spend time in the water using your own power to travel along. Over the past years, kayaks have become very popular. They are inexpensive to purchase starting as low as
a couple of hundred dollars, although more expensive models are available. They are lightweight, thus very portable and easy to store over the winter. Kayaks are small narrow boats which hold one or two people. The paddler uses a double-bladed paddle to propel the boat. On any given day, kayaks can be seen traveling on the lakes. It can be a single kayaker or a group of friends traveling along enjoying the day and the beauty of nature. Kayaks are fun to enjoy on the water and they will take you as fast as your arms can paddle or the wind and the waves can propel you. Kayaks are easy to maneuver and a great way to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the water on a nice summer day. Kayaks, like canoes, can turn over if not balanced correctly, so for safety always wear your life jackets or other personal flotation device. Almost anyone can learn to kayak. Kayaking is a great way to increase physical activity. “Kayaking is a great way to get out and enjoy time on the water,” said Pat Schafer who has spent her life living on waterfronts and owns a variety of watercraft including a fishing boat, pontoons, and rowboats, but also has enjoyed kayaking with a friend. “They do tend to wobble when getting in or out. Once you learn to keep them steady, they are fun,” Schafer added.
Over the last few years stand up paddle boards (SUP) have become another way to enjoy both the waves and the tranquility of the lakes. Like kayaks, they are inexpensive and easy to transfer from home to the lakefront. Balance is important when riding a SUP. So perhaps that is why the sport appeals to those in their teens and twenties, when balance is at its best. However, anyone can learn. Paddle boards are a low impact activity and can help improve your balance. So don’t be shy – give a SUP a try. As with all the watersports, safety is important. Wear a life jacket. If possible, only use where there are lifeguards and never go out alone.
Swimming For many of us, the best days of summer when we were young, were those we spent going to the beach and spending the day playing in the sand and swimming in the water. Of course, those days often ended with sunburn as we neglected to replenish layers of sunscreen throughout the day. Today as grownups we take our children or in some cases grandchildren to the beach to enjoy the fun we once had. And surprisingly, they are just as excited to be • CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

ON THE WATER • CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5 at the beach, digging in sand to build their sand castles and bringing up buckets of water to moisten the sand to keep it in place as they build. They often attempt to build a moat around their castle, but become frustrated that the water doesn’t stay on top of the sand but sinks in. We are now a bit smarter and remember to reapply the sun screen, on ourselves and on the children, and to try to avoid sunburn. The American Red Cross advises: “Never swim alone or allow anyone else to do so. Always swim with a buddy.” The Red Cross also recommends swimming in areas with a lifeguard and always keeping an eye on everyone in your group, especially young children. Avoid distractions including cell phones. On a hot sunny day walking into the water as the waves splash gently up your body and the cold water temporarily cools one down and at the same time, takes your breath away. There are many beaches along the local lakes that will make a wonderful day at the beach. Bring snacks and a variety of liquid drinks to avoid dehydration. And have fun. All of you will return home happy and tired from a day at the beach.

Have you been to the Volo Museum lately? If not, this is the year to visit as new displays are being opened this summer that will be enjoyed by the entire family. No longer just an auto museum, but also a variety of other displays including the addition of the dinosaur exhibit at Jurassic Park, which made its appearance last year. Add the new trains from movies, an experience known as the Titanic Exhibit, the Duesenberg Room, a new ice cream parlor with locally sourced ice cream and other new exhibits all scheduled to be open by this summer, and there is enough to enjoy for several visits. Jurassic Park brought a new and very popular exhibit to the Volo Museum. Dinosaurs of every kind and size are displayed here. While there is a small, outdoor-themed playground built for children younger than 12 and a few large dinosaurs to be enjoyed outdoors, the majority of the museum is indoors, a perfect place to take the kids on a rainy day. “Indoors there are over 40 animatronic dinosaurs, set in realistic settings as one • CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

The dinosaurs can be seen swishing their tails and growling loudly throughout the exhibit, sounds that will thrill (or frighten) visitors. Each display has a placard telling the history and facts about the specific dinosaur on display. Hopefully your children will give you time to read them, and they too will enjoy learning more about each special dinosaur as they move into each new exhibit. There amid live plants, to look like the home of the dinosaur, visitors take a walk through life as it was millions of years ago when these dinosaurs roamed the earth. Many of the exhibits, including this one, are interactive. Children will enjoy panning for fossils and learn more about the skeletons of the many dinosaurs. They can also dig in sand to find their fossil as

they experience being an archeologist for the day. Volo suggests bringing ear protection for people who are sound sensitive, especially for young children. Earplugs are also available for sale in the gift shop if you forget to bring your own. There is a separate admission charge for the Volo Museum and for Jurassic Park. A combined ticket for both can be purchased that is less expensive than separate tickets. Tickets can be purchased online or at the entrance to the park. A BIT OF HISTORY In 1960 when the Grams family purchased the 35-acre, 110-year-old property that had previously been a dairy farm, it was not imagined that the property would be turned into the museum that it is today. The land is located in the little village of Volo, but back then it was not

an incorporated village. When incorporated in 1993, the number of residents was less than 3000, and it has not grown a significant amount since then. While the family planned to live in the farmhouse and open a resale shop in the barn, which they did, it was the Grams teenage sons, Greg and Bill, who changed the focus of the property as they began to follow their passion of collecting old cars and repairing them. As their collection grew, friends and neighbors would stop by to view their collection. Eventually, they began to sell some of the autos they restored and realized there was an interest in old automobiles, and possibly some money to be earned when restoring some of the old models. The business grew from there as the family worked together to create the unique collection of automobiles including a variety of autos from movies and television shows that attracts visitors from around the world. The project has grown to encompass the majority of the 35 acres of the Grams farm as more buildings were built to house the many classic automobiles. A walk-through the automobiles on display can take several hours if one spends the time to enjoy the various automobile displays. Perhaps you will find an auto that is remembered from your past. From a single pole barn with a gravel floor, no heat, or plumbing to today’s multi-building museum, the Grams boys built a major destination for over one half million visitors from around the world each year. The family still owns the business and now the third generation of Grams are actively working on site. “Many of our visitors are senior citizens, who are enjoying this trip into their youth as they may recognize autos from their past,” Wojdyla said. “But we are also a family-focused museum and welcome families of all ages. There is much to please anyone whatever their age or interest.” OTHER ATTRACTIONS It is not difficult to spend a whole day meandering through the many buildings of the auto museum alone. Whether you are there to look at autos you remember from your childhood or those special automobiles that seemed to do unbelievable stunts in movies or on television, you are sure to find the special ones you remember. The museum also has a variety of other interesting items to enjoy, including early motorcycles and bicycles, along with the old time animatron musical productions such as the one from Chuck E Cheese in the 1970s and 1980s. Today it can be enjoyed in the pizzeria, when one stops for lunch or a snack. Another favorite place to enjoy is the area known as the Coney Island exhibit. This area houses the popular 1927 carousel with wood-carved horses. Who doesn’t enjoy a ride on the carousel from the youngest child to adults who reminisce about their youthful days? The Coney Island exhibit area houses one of this year’s new exhibits – the Ice Cream Parlor. “The ice cream is purchased from a local manufacturer to assure great quality,” Wojdyla said. “Being in this area is a step back to days of being on the Coney Island pier when music, and ice cream were enjoyed by all visitors.” “There are plans to add a beer garden to the property,” Wojdyla said. “We are still working with the village on obtaining the liquor license, then we will proceed to build the beer garden.” TRAINS, BOATS AND AUTOS Equally important to sharing views of a variety of classic cars, is the museum’s place as leader in the world’s collector car sales. There are four buildings of automobiles up for sale and they can be viewed on line to help buyers decide if the classic car they hope to buy is available and in their budget. Enjoy viewing these high-end autos that many can only dream of owning. If you have been around the Volo Museum, you may have noticed some major changes as some of the ground is being graded and a number of cranes can be seen in the yard. The Hollywood Train Tour will be opening soon. Recently the train used in the movie, Inception, which starred Leonardo Di Caprio, Tom Hardy, and Joseph Gordon- Levitt was delivered to the Volo Museum. The train arrived on an extended semi-truck chassis and was driven onto the grounds. According to the video on the Volo Museum website it was not easy to drive because of the limited vision and the extreme length of the car. The driver was guided by directors on either side of the train. The inside of the train car suffered some damage during the transport and will have to be rebuilt. “When all the train cars arrive and the ground has been

graded the train display will open. There will be seven movie trains in all,” Wojdyla said. “Hopefully by June, they will all be accounted for and at home here in Volo.” The Titanic exhibit is another of the special exhibits currently being worked on that they hope will be completed this summer. The exhibit will be the home of a replica of the 1912 Renault that was used in the movie. It was the car where Rose and Jack, principal characters in the movie Titanic got to know each other as they sat in the car to enjoy some private time. The original Renault went down with the ship. There will also be a display of fashions of the time and an interactive picture display. The Duesenberg Room will be the place where the most expensive car will be on display. That is the Duesenberg. The original Duesenberg was created in the 1920s prior to the Depression. Because of its extreme cost, it was discontinued during this trying time. for $500,000. It was a huge machine and not meant for general public use due to size and cost. Two other displays will be completed this summer honoring two popular movies that used special cars, which the museum has obtained. “Fast and Furious” and “Ford vs. Ferrari” will each have a display completed this summer. Spending a day at the museum is an all-day event if you want to see a wide variety of the displays. Whether you are there to enjoy the variety of classic automobiles on display or to enjoy Jurassic Park, the train rides and other new displays, there is plenty to enjoy. Boat responsibly; life jackets save lives FATALITIES ALREADY REPORTED THIS YEAR The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reminds boaters that wearing a life jacket could save your life. It is human nature to think drowning can’t happen to you. Most people who drown in boating accidents know how to swim but become incapacitated in the water such as being injured or unconscious, exhausted or weighed down by clothing. Four people have died in boating incidents as of the end of May, and another 25 people died in 2021. Operator inexperience, inattention, recklessness and speeding are the four leading causes of tragic watercraft crashes, and the leading cause of death is drowning. Boating is a big part of Wisconsin’s culture and summer fun. With that comes the responsibility of making sure to operate your boat in a safe and responsible manner. Part of that is ensuring there are enough life jackets on board for everyone. Nationally, 80% of all boating related fatalities are the direct result of drowning. Something as simple as
wearing your life jacket can significantly mitigate that risk and prevent a fun summer outing from becoming a tragedy. “Safety is an important part of water fun,” said Lt. Darren Kuhn, DNR Boating Law Administrator. “Wisconsin rivers and lakes can be relaxing and family-friendly places to spend a summer day when you put safety first and respect the water.” The department does not track all drownings – only those fatalities linked to the use of a recreational activity item, such as a boat, kayak or canoe. Boating incident reports to date for 2022 and previous years are available online here. Statistics show boaters who wear life jackets and take boater safety courses are most likely to stay safe on Wisconsin waters. New life jackets are much more comfortable, lightweight and stylish than the bulky orange style most boaters know. There are innovative options, such as inflatable life jackets, allowing mobility and flexibility for activities like boating, fishing, paddling or hunting and are much cooler in the
warmer weather. Follow the basic safety tips below and enjoy Wisconsin’s open waters with family and friends.
Water safety tips: • Sign up now to take an online boater education course. • Always wear a properly fitted life jacket that has a snug fit and is fastened when you’re on or near the water. Life jackets will keep you on top of the water if you walk off an unexpected drop-off, or a wave or current overpowers you or you fall out of a boat. • Enjoy the waters sober and know your limits. Alcohol blurs a person’s judgment, reaction time and abilities. • River shorelines and sandbars pose unseen dangers. Higher, fast-moving water can tax an individual’s boating, paddling and swimming skills. • Keep an eye on the weather and let someone know where you are going. Be ready for the unexpected and always wear your life jacket. More boating safety tips are available on the DNR website at dnr.wi.gov.
