Take a Taste of Summer As June moves into July, Antioch comes alive with the Taste of Summer once again supersized and better than ever. From July 18 to 21, the area around the band shell will be transformed into a carnival experience with exciting music permeating the air. The carnival will have a new look this year as new spectacular carnival rides have been added for teens and adults. Once again there will be a special time set aside for children with special needs. On Friday, July 19, from 1 to 3 p.m., the carnival rides will not be opened to the general public. During those hours, the carnival will be open only to children with special needs who may bring their family members to share the fun with them. Contact antiochchamber.org to register your special child to participate in this very special time of fun. The carnival will be open to the public from 4 to 11 p.m. Check the Antioch Chamber website for weekend hours and to purchase a special armband for $50, which will allow participation on all carnival activities for all four days. The four-day bands are only available online prior to the opening of the carnival. Daily wristbands will be available for sale at the venue. The Taste of Summer is also the site of many exhibition booths, face painting opportunities, balloon art and the ever popular beer tent staffed by volunteer community members. A variety of musical acts will perform, including Goo Roos and Modern Day Romeos (Thursday), Elder Kaos and Boy Band Night (Friday), Rosie and the Rivets, Hair Band Night, and Suburban Cowboys (Saturday) and 2ND Hand Soul and Hi Infidelity (Sunday). Musical rain date, if needed, is Monday, July 22.

As summer approaches, many families look forward to more time on the water together. The fun might include boating and other watersports, such as tubing, skiing, or wakeboarding. Preparation and education are the keys to a safe and successful day on the water. So get the summer off to a great start by making sure passengers of all ages have well-fitted lifejackets and understand safety procedures. When fitting a child’s lifejacket, be sure to select the current size. Don’t put a child in an adult lifejacket or buy one in a larger size for a child to grow into. Rather, put the jacket on the child and buckle and secure all straps. Then lift the child’s arm up over his or her head and pull up on the jacket. If it slips off, it’s too big. Free vessel safety checks available from the USCG Auxiliary in Fox Lake The 2019 recreational boating season is in full swing, and fortunately, you won’t be on the water alone. USCG Auxiliary’s Fox Lake Flotilla will be on the waterway as a resource to boaters . We look out for hazards on the water (i.e.: floating debris), boaters behaving dangerously, and for anyone who has questions. We are here to help you be safe while you’re enjoying the water. A first step toward being a safe boater is to take advantage of an annual free Vessel Safety Check. During your VSC, the examiner reviews with you (the boater) both the required items to have on board inorder to comply with the federal and state laws and the recommended important equipment in case of an emergency. This dock-side safety check takes a few minutes and can alert you to real and potential problems with your boat or safety equipment. Upon successful completion, the vessel is awarded the VSC decal for display on his/her watercraft. Should the vessel be missing any item(s), those will be noted on the checklist. Not to worry, the Auxiliary doesn’t issue citations and gladly returns for a quick re-check once those discrepancies are resolved. Most weekends, we operate at the McDonald’s boat dock in Fox Lake. Having an annual VSC is a great way to keep your family safe, know your safety equipment is likely to be in good order should you need it, and display to local law enforcement that you’re making an effort to be a safe boater. What to ask before renting a summer home
A home away from home can be the ideal retreat for couples, singletons and families. Quite often individuals reserve the same properties year after year to serve as a vacation retreat. The familiarity and comfort of a rental can be the ideal place to spend a few days or weeks during a vacation. Data from HomeAway, a vacation rental booking service, says that many people book summer rentals as early as January to ensure they have the perfect place to stay during the peak season. However, for vacations taken in July and beyond, locking down one’s stay between May and July are possible. Ski season stays as well as holiday retreats are best booked by October, advises the company. When it comes time to research and book a rental, it is important to note that listings likely won’t paint the full picture. It is important to ask the right questions and conduct a thorough vetting of properties before booking a rental. • Get the facts of the contract and exactly what the rental entails. Are use of WiFi or cable television available? Are you responsible for taking out the trash and recycling? What is the cancellation policy? Are there any fees incurred for minor damage to the home? The contract should be as thorough as possible so there are no surprises later on. • Explore pet-friendly accommodations. Many people choose to travel with pets, which can make it less stressful than leaving companion animals behind. What may constitute “pet-friendly” to one landlord may not be the same to another. One house may have a fenced yard and a doghouse. Another may actually let the pet have free reign of the house without having to be crated. It helps to know the difference in advance. The vacation rental site VRBO says there is no standard for making a home accommodating to pets. • Learn about parking. The Evolve Vacation Rental Network says to ask the specifics of the parking situation, including whether there is a driveway or onstreet parking. If there is on-street parking, find out if the vehicle needs to be moved for street cleaning or specific zoning. • Learn the lingo. For those booking international rentals, certain nuances of the listing lingo may be different than you’re used to. Inquire specifically about the number of rooms and bedrooms so you are properly prepared. • Find out if the kitchen is equipped. Some kitchens come with a ladle and saucepan only, while others may be fully outfitted for gourmet meals. Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning on your boat Boating is a rewarding hobby that allows people to spend ample time on the water enjoying the great outdoors. Fresh air and boating might go hand in hand, but a danger may be lurking in the air on or around boats that can put boaters’ health in jeopardy. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, carbon monoxide, or CO, can accumulate anywhere in or around a boat. Inadequately ventilated canvas enclosures and blocked exhaust outlets are just two places where CO can accumulate. Exhaust also can get trapped in enclosed places, potentially leading to the accumulation of CO. Fortunately, the USCG notes that CO poisoning is entirely preventable. Routine maintenance and attentive boat ownership can protect boaters and their passengers from the threat posed by CO poisoning.

Irritated eyes, headache, nausea, weakness, and dizziness are some of the early symptoms of CO poisoning. These are easily and often mistaken as seasickness when on a boat. Any of the aforementioned symptoms should be addressed immediately. People experiencing these symptoms should be moved to a fresh air environment, observed and given oxygen, if necessary. Seek medical help and shut off potential sources of CO, if possible. Do not write these symptoms off as simple seasickness. Err on the side of caution, even if you’re unsure if CO poisoning is the culprit.
What are the dangers of CO poisoning?
CO is produced when carbon-based fuels burn. Such fuels include gasoline, charcoal or oil, so boat engines are not the only potential source of CO poisoning on a boat. Gas generators, cooking ranges and space and water heaters also pose a threat. CO is dangerous because it can enter the bloodstream through the lungs, preventing the body from getting the oxygen it needs. The USCG notes that both prolonged exposure to low concentrations of CO or very quick exposure to high concentrations of CO can prove fatal.
Protect yourself and others from CO
The USCG recommends all boaters learn where and how CO can accumulate on their boats. Maintain fresh air circulation throughout the boat at all times, running exhaust blowers whenever the generator is operating. When hosting others on their boats, boaters should make sure everyone steers clear of engine and generator exhaust outlets. Boaters and their guests should never sit, teak surf or hang on the back deck or swim platform while engines are running. The USCG notes that the presence of exhaust fumes means CO is present, too.
