More drivers are opting for electric vehicles, Here’s why If you think you’re seeing more electric vehicles (EVs) on the road, you’re not imagining it. From 2020 to 2021 alone, there was a 70% increase in registered EVs within the United States. Auto giants such as Ford and Chevrolet are quickly expanding their fleets of EVs, and with Congress passing historic EV legislation last fall, experts agree that this trend is only set to intensify. With all the buzz surrounding the EV industry right now, one issue has surprisingly managed to persist: the problem of charging compatibility. “The U.S. EV industry has been held back in the past due to limited charging options and a fragmented EV infrastructure,” says Christopher Maiwald, founder and CEO of Lectron, a leading manufacturer of EV charging solutions. “Recent moves by the federal government are aimed primarily at increasing charging availability.” Indeed, the recent legislation is geared towards promoting EVs as a sustainable alternative to gas-powered cars. The massive $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill signed last November contains $7.5 billion earmarked to be spent on building out the nation’s EV charging network. While the government hopes that greater charging availability will lessen range anxiety and boost driver confidence, it stops short of quelling compatibility concerns. American AC charging infrastructure is currently divided between two types of charging standards: Tesla and J1772 (all other EVs), while the country’s DC charging infrastructure is divided even further: Tesla, CSS, and CHAdeMO. “The legislation is a step in the right direction, but it does little to address the issue of charger compatibility,” continues Maiwald.

times. Another way the industry is handling the growing compatibility problem is through the wider use of portable chargers. The final hurdle toward greater EV acceptance may not be related to public charging stations at all. Hankook Tire’s latest Gauge Index found that as daily driving decreased as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, nearly one-third (30%) of Americans have done less car cleaning and maintenance too. But car maintenance is always important, especially as drivers around the country gradually resume their travels and hit the road. Hankook Tire found that 60% of Americans expect to take more car trips moving forward. With that in mind, the following are five reasons it’s important to keep up with regular car maintenance:

Washing a car is simple, but to do a great job of it there are a few things to bear in mind. This guide will run through how to get your car shiny and fresh in just a handful of steps. What you need to wash a car A hose or pressure washer. Specialised car wash soap or wash wax. A sponge. Cloths. Car polish. 1. Spray the car down Use a hose or a pressure washer to clean most of the dirt and grit off the outside. 2. Work from the top with soap Apply your soap or wash wax at the top, moving downwards so dirt doesn’t run into parts you’ve already cleaned. 3. How to get more mileage from your car With car supplies still not meeting today’s demand, experts believe that prices are going to remain elevated on both new and used cars for the foreseeable future. CHARGE UP YOUR CAR BATTERY KNOWLEDGE Vehicles consist of many essential components to keep them running efficiently and effectively. Car and truck owners should have an understanding of how their vehicles function so they can diagnose and address problems as they arise. Car batteries are an important component of any vehicle. Even though engines are the powerhouse of any car or truck, without a battery, the engine wouldn’t be able to work. According to Firestone Complete Auto Care, car batteries work by providing a jolt of electricity necessary to power all the electrical components of the vehicle. This is achieved through a chemical reaction that changes chemical energy into the electrical energy needed to deliver voltage to the starter. In addition to initially starting the car, the battery also keeps electric current steady to keep the engine running. The battery also works in conjunction with the alternator to power the electronics in the car, according to the automotive information blog Autosessive. While the car is running, the alternator reverses the current produced by the battery, recharging it as a result. Scary sounds: What noisy brakes may be telling you The only noises many drivers ever want to hear coming from their vehicles are the sounds of their favorite songs blasting from their car stereos. But cars sometimes make noises that aren’t nearly as inviting as music. Noises that seem to pop up when applying the brakes can be especially scary for motorists. No one wants to drive a vehicle with faltering or suspect brakes, so learning to distinguish between the two most common brake noises can be a wise move for drivers.
Grinding brakes
The automotive retailer Pep Boys notes that grinding noises indicate a serious problem with the braking system. According to CarsDirect.com, there are two major causes behind the grinding noise made by brakes. If the grinding sound is audible when pressing on the brake pedal, this likely because the rotor disc is coming into contact with part of the caliper. This typically occurs because the brake pads or rotors are extremely worn down, causing the steel backing of the worn out pad to grind against the rotor. In such instances, Pep Boys recommends replacing the brake pads immediately. If the grinding noise is audible while the vehicle is in motion, debris might be stuck inside the brakes. Drivers might be able to dislodge this debris by repeatedly
moving their cars forward and backward in a safe place, such as a driveway. If that does not work, have the brakes serviced by a qualified mechanic.
Squealing
Many drivers are familiar with the high-pitched squealing sound that comes from their vehicles or those of fellow motorists. That squeal, while certainly not music to the ears, might be a good thing. That’s because Pep Boys notes that some brake pads are equipped with small steel clips that serve as wear indicators. When brake pads have worn down, these devices produce a squealing sound to let drivers know it’s time to get new brake pads. But squealing can be indicative of other things as well. Squealing noises are sometimes heard immediately after brake pads or rotors have been replaced. In such instances, the noise typically subsides within a day or two once the pads have been broken in. Glazed pads also can create a squealing sound. When calipers stick, the brakes stay partially applied, producing excessive friction or heat. The heat causes the brake pads to glaze. (METRO CREATIVE)

Countless headlines suggest you have to drive a battery-powered electric vehicle (EV) if you care about the planet. Yet consumers, including many who want to be “green,” are still opting for gasolinepowered vehicles 98 percent of the time. What’s standing in their way? Cost. It may cost as much as $10,000 or $15,000 more up-front for a batteryelectric car compared with a similar gaspowered car. Charging. Installing a home charger that’s required to run a EV can cost an additional $1,000 to $3,000. Additionally, a home charger may not be possible for those who park on the street or live in an apartment building. Road trips. The number of public charging spots is growing, but it’s not like the nationwide network of gas stations. Even with a relatively robust 200-mile range, EV owners must plan carefully for charging breaks every few hours of driving. It may take 30 to 60 minutes to add enough battery power for another couple hours of driving. Bigger battery packs can give longer range, but also longer charging times. If any of these realities are the dealbreakers preventing you from going green behind the wheel -- relax! Plug-in hybrids A plug-in hybrid is a hybrid you can plug-in to charge a separate battery and then drive for 30-50 miles on pure electric power. After that, a gasoline engine kicks in, operating like a hybrid. For commuting, a plug-in like a Toyota RAV4 Prime or Prius Prime is a great choice. The average U.S. commute is 16 miles. Automakers have been improving them continuously to meet tougher federal fuel economy regulations. Madison Classics: The largest midwest car swap & meet The 2022 Spring Jefferson:Auto Swap Meet & Car Show featuring 60’s muscle cars, will take place April 22-24 at the Jefferson County Fair Park 503 N. Jackson St., in Jefferson, Wis. Gary Esse of Madison Classics started working on cars when he was 13 years old at his father’s gas station in Madison, Wis. As his interest in cars grew, he began buying and selling cars and parts on a regular basis. Before he knew it, selling N.O.S. Chevy parts had become the way he supported his family. One day on the way home from Hersey, Penn., Gary started thinking that the Midwest needed a show like those found in Pennsylvania. Being a vendor himself, Gary understood what it took to put together a solid show, and with support of his wife LaRhee and close friends Madison Classics was born. Since then, the Madison Classic’s line of car shows has evolved into some of the Midwest’s largest Auto Swap meets, drawing crowds from all over the United States. Gary envisioned Madison Classics as something larger than just a swap meet. He believed that Madison Classics could help carry on the tradition of classic cars on to the next generation. Being a family business, Gary, wife LaRhee and their three sons, Paul, Erick, and David each played key roles in the growth of Madison Classics. Together, the family has transformed Madison Classics into a career for all three sons. In March of 2011, LaRhee passed away after a seven year battle with cancer. She was not only a founder of Madison Classics; she also took great pride in organizing the shows. She is dearly missed and will be remembered by many. Gary and his three sons, Paul, Erick and David will take the torch and plan on operating the swap meets well into the future.
