Teachers make a lasting impact By Annathea Brenneman BHS VALEDICTORIAN
High school didn’t turn out nearly as bad as I feared it would. Throughout my childhood, I feared each new school building. Each new level in my life was certainly going to be the one where things got much worse. Completely unexpectedly, high school was an improvement from my previous grades. It offered me new courses, new extracurriculars, new friends, and some wonderful new teachers. New courses let me expand my interests as well as letting me know what I wasn’t interested in at all. The more flexible scheduling let me cut out classes that I didn’t like and keep those I did. Another great part about scheduling is that many of these courses were taught by only one or two teachers, letting you evaluate if the teacher was someone you thought would work well with you. In my senior year, I only had teachers I really enjoyed and knew this even before my classes started because of my interactions with them. Overall, those teachers that had the biggest impact on me were those whom I worked with in any capacity for more than one year. While a teacher can be really amazing at their job, it takes time for me to get comfortable with the teacher. Teachers also had a large role in my extracurricular
activities. I was in other clubs and groups for a few of my years, but my bedrock foundation of extracurriculars was made up of the theatre program and juggling club. Each season of theatre productions had its charms. The fall one-acts provided a team atmosphere as well as healthy competition. Instead of competing against the other schools the one act encouraged us to compete against ourselves making our play better with each performance as well as connecting us as a group. The musical provided a way for a lot
more people to get involved. This made it a bit more of a schoolwide event than the others and, of course, seeing it performed was fantastic. If you know me, you know that during the musicals I was strictly working backstage, which let me enjoy watching a fair amount of the show. The spring plays, though, have always had a special place in my heart. The competition aspect is nice for the musical and the one act, but there is something so enjoyable about just putting on a fun play or in the case of my freshman and junior years, putting on a play for
children. While adult audiences may have enthusiasm, they can’t compare to the enthusiasm of children. Juggling club managed to be flexible when I was at play practice and had a lot of amazing events. My mom was in charge of the club so I was particularly grateful for the flexibility she gave my friends and I. It’s pretty hard to sum up what high school is like because it really depends on the person. For me it was fairly pleasant overall, with some things I could’ve done without and some things that I will remember lovingly.
Relationships key to school experience By Brian Fremgen BHS SALUTATORIAN
My four years at Burlington High School have been at par to what I expected it to be. I grew a lot as a person during the course of my tenure, especially from freshman to sophomore year. Coming into high school, I was a band kid who did not have a ton of friends. Not that there is anything wrong with that – I was content with my situation. There was a certain incident that happened (of which I will not get into detail) that caused me to almost entirely give up music and change how I spent my time. Instead of practicing music all of the time

and performing, I started to spend more time with my friends and be social. I started going to school sporting events where I would meet up with other kids my age and build on those relationships. I eventually formed a friend group with my six best friends and I could not be happier. Lots of my favorite memories of high school are with those six guys. My favorite school-related memories are probably going to football games and when the girls volleyball team made their playoff runs. I loved the energy of the student section and being a part of something bigger than all of us. The one other thing I loved the most was the trip to Denmark I took with the school. Although it was not as long as I would have liked it to be, it was one of the most eyeopening experiences I had by seeing another culture firsthand. I also hosted a Danish
student five months after I went there, and now he and I are really close friends and keep a regular correspondence. One of the best decisions I made during high school was joining the golf team. After I joined, a weekend hobby became an obsession. I became addicted to getting better and playing at the highest level I could, and I still am today. The thing I am most thankful for because of high school is the relationships I made with other people. I made really strong relationships with friends and teachers alike that I know will carry on after high school. Am I sad that I am leaving high school? No, I am not. I am ready to move on to bigger and better things and challenge myself more at the college level. I will be forever grateful that my experience went as smoothly as it did, and I know it did because of the amazing support system I had along the way.

Once a Hilltopper, always a Hilltopper By Sam Henderson CCHS VALEDICTORIAN
Never in a million years did I imagine our senior year to end in this fashion. Our book of high school was slammed shut with no conclusion. Time and memories with friends gone. We’ve missed out on opportunities to showcase ourselves on the field, track, stage, and on the dance floor. Unlike the 1997-1998 Chicago Bulls, we never got our “Last Dance.” However, this pandemic will not stop us, but will only make us stronger. In our four years of high school, we’ve shown incredible persistence and grit. We’ve survived the hardships of high school, the zits and acne, the drama, and the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series. Looking back high school was pretty smooth, but it felt like a rollercoaster in each particular moment. I remember walking into school as a little freshman on my first day like it was yesterday. Going to classes, nailing your routine down, making new friends then going to football practice. The routine of it became ingrained in me. Then, high school took off like a rocket – sports seasons, dances, and the years flew by. Now as high school has closed have I finally stopped to smell the roses. As a class we have a plethora of accomplishments. In volleyball, the girls have brought home both a gold and silver
ball from Green Bay. The football team won their first playoff game in four years. We’ve had state qualifiers in cross country and track and field. On the stage, we’ve had countless Jerry Award winners. There have been accomplishments in forensics, Math League, Model UN, and many other endeavors. These feats would not have been possible without the leadership and contributions from our class. None of these accomplishments would be possible without our parents, administration, teachers, coaches, and the student body. Our parents are the reason why we are attending Catholic Central, and
we must thank them. Our administration and teachers have imparted not only knowledge, but have guided us through this difficult time of our life. Our coaches are teachers in their sports, they educate us, and also care about us deeply. Lastly, there is no school without the students. Each of us has left their unique mark in Catholic Central history book. As we look toward the future, our paths diverge. Some of us may be going into the trades, others may be heading to colleges and universities in the fall, if COVID-19 allows. I’m looking forward to my next step as a Badger, while others are attending the
rival school in the “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” Some of us will be college athletes, while others may have “retired” early from sports. We will become doctors, businessmen and women, engineers, scientists, teachers, writers, artists, plumbers, and electricians. There is no limit on the capabilities of what our class can and will achieve. Moving forward, the next phase of our life begins. We will grow, mature, make new friends, keep old friends, and turn the page into our future. I am proud to represent the Catholic Central Class of 2020 as valedictorian. Once a Hilltopper, always a Hilltopper.
The end brings a new beginning By Brandon Pum CCHS SALUTATORIAN
Well everyone, this is definitely not how we all thought our high school careers were going to end. None of us pictured being in quarantine and attending online school. Yes, we lost many things dear to us: our last prom, our final season of sports, our graduation, and many more. But there is still one thing COVID-19 and the quarantine can’t take away from us, and that is our memories that we made throughout the years. As I am trying to recall what our class has
all been through, I can’t help but remember the fun and crazy times. From moments as old as messing around while hanging out in Benny’s basement as freshmen to recent memories like marrying Bennett and Chas in the volleyball student section, we have definitely been a wild group. But this is exactly what has made our class so memorable and who we are. Besides all the funny moments, we have also had many great accomplishments. We have had multiple groups make it to state for sports, such as Sam and Nick at track and the volleyball girls who won. Our play people have also won countless awards for their unforgettable musicals. No matter what our class does or has done, we succeed. We have built a legacy that will last forever. With the unknown frontier called college
ahead of us, or the trades to make money if you are Paul, we will be stepping out of our comfort zones into something totally new. Still, all of us will be connected no matter where we go or what we do. We have built lasting friendships that have been strengthened by what we have all gone through together. We have truly become that “family” that CC always talks about when recruiting. Even though we have had our disagreements at times, we have always come back together just like a family. Thank you to each and every one of you, as well as teachers, coaches, and parents. We could not have gotten where we are without all of you. This may be the end, but it is also a beginning, and we will always be there for each other when needed.
