his area is truly a four-season destination with something for everyone 12 months a year! Our rivers, lakes, streams, and woodlands are just the beginning of your experience in our wonderful city. Visitors can easily enjoy a leisurely afternoon strolling along Burlington’s Scenic Riverwalk or beautiful trails. Adding to the beauty of Burlington’s landscape are dozens of parks, many along the banks of the White and Fox Rivers, offering playground equipment, picnic areas, and fishing. Our rivers and lakes make Burlington a popular destination for boating, fishing and water sports enthusiasts alike. Area lakes include Bohners Lake, Browns Lake, Rockland Lake and Echo Lake - located in the heart of the city. The Farmers’ Market takes place in Wehmhoff Square Park located in Downtown Burlington every Thursday evening May through October from 3 to 7 p.m. and B-Town Sounds performs free concerts in Echo Park during the summer, along with the Kiwanis Civic Band who plays on Friday evenings.Bring your blanket and picnic basket because you won’t want to miss it! Remember, no visit to Burlington is complete without seeing the Aquaducks Water-Ski Show, the Rotary Barons or the Southern Lakes Blue Devils. The Aquaducks Water-Ski show is free and held on Thursday evenings in the summer at Fischer County Park on Browns Lake. The Rotary Barons are a semi-professional baseball team that began in 1997. You can see them in action yourself during their season, which runs from May through August at Beaumont Field, across from Echo Lake. Last but not at all the least are the Southern Lakes Blue Devils, a semi-professional football team consisting of noncollege bound stand-out athletes. The Iron Athletes Football League consists of 13 teams within Southeastern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. Just minutes southeast of Burlington on Rustic Road Highway B, you will find two of our area’s most valued treasures – AEppelTreow Winery and Brightonwoods Orchard; a collaborative venture that produces awardwinning wines, sweet cider and a large variety of heritage apples in season. Across the street sits Richard Bong State Recreation Area with over 4,500 acres of rolling grassland, savanna, wetlands and scattered woodland. In addition to our vast array of outdoor recreational offerings, Burlington is home to several historical, educational and entertaining attractions. The historic Malt House Theater is home to The Haylofters, one of Wisconsin’s oldest continuing community theaters. The Burlington Historical Society

maintains the Burlington Historical Museum and Pioneer Cabin, offers a self-guided walking tour of Historic Burlington, and has traced the Roots for Freedom, Wisconsin’s Underground Railroad. Plus, the Chocolate Experience Museum, Spinning Top Museum, and Logic Puzzles Museum will delight children and adults alike. Known as the home of the Liars’ Club, Burlington boasts the Tall Tales Trail, a self-guided tour of championship lies immortalized on bronze plaques displayed throughout the downtown area. Burlington’s official nickname, Chocolate City USA, celebrates Nestle USA’s long-term commitment to the community as well as the annual ChocolateFest held every year on Memorial Day weekend. ChocolateFest draws visitors from around the country and grows in popularity every year as people come to see what chocolate creations are being made to celebrate each year’s theme. CHOCOLATEFEST
ChocolateFest Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate Every Memorial Day Burlington holds a four-day party to celebrate its long history with Nestlé and their great chocolate! Begun in 1987, it’s called ChocolateFest and has grown over the years into a unique celebration of chocolate. With 20 acres of the sweetest fun around you’ll want to make time to be there! There are special events and activities throughout the weekend, such as chocolate eating contests, chocolate demos and tastings, chocolate carvings, and more. Past creations have included a 7,000-pound Crunch Bar (largest molded candy bar according to the Guinness Book of World’s Record), a 1,500-pound dinosaur, 9-foot Statue of Liberty, a full-size Harley Davidson motorcycle and a 15-foot “chocolate” waterfall, and a working carousel just to name a few created by Nestlé’s talented employees. Stop into the Chocolate Museum to see real chocolate carvings and a video of past creations. Plus, see a sampling of the actual chocolate creations from past festivals. The Museum is located at 113 E. Chestnut St., Suite B, in downtown Burlington. The festival is one of the most popular events around and draws up to 60,000 visitors each year. CHOCOLATE EXPERIENCE

ver wondered “Where’s the Chocolate?!” We may just have the answer. Stop in and visit the Chocolate Experience Museum, located in downtown Burlington in the Chamber of Commerce building. You can watch the “History of Creations” video which shows the many marvelous chocolate creations that have been built over the years for the annual Chocolate Festival. Creations have included a chocolate globe, a chocolate Statue of Liberty, and a Chocolate Cow, just to name a few! Plus, learn about the history of chocolate, not only by watching a “History of Nestle Chocolate Video, but by seeing Farfel, the Talking Dog (the original Nestle USA mascot). The museum also has original chocolate sculptures and creations (such as ‘Pegasus’ our white chocolate horse), and much more! The Chocolate Experience Museum is located at 113 E. Chestnut St., Suite B in downtown Burlington. Open Monday - Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This museum is a great attraction for all ages. Tony Romo Antonio “Tony” Ramiro Romo (born April 22, 1980, in San Diego, California) was the starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. Playing quarterback for the Burlington Demons his junior and senior year of high school, he made the All-Racine County football team. Romo played college football at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois where he was an AllAmerican Quarterback and won the Walter Payton Award as the Nation’s top player in the NCAA Division 1-AA in 2002. One of Romo’s early professional career highlights was in
2004, when (as the third string quarterback) he rushed for the winning touchdown with six seconds left in an exhibition game against the Oakland Raiders. Elevated to the Cowboys’ No. 2 quarterback in 2005, Romo had strong showings in the 2005 and 2006 pre-seasons. On October 29, 2006, Romo led the Cowboys to victory in his first game as a starter, 35–14. In that game, Romo was Sunday Night Football’s “Rock Star of the Game.” Since then, Tony Romo has led his team to two NFC East Division Championships and has been voted to multiple Pro Bowls. In 2016, Tony retired from the NFL and it was announced that he would become the # 1 NFL Analyst, taking over for Phil Simms, sitting alongside Jim Nantz.
Gregory Itzin Gregory Itzin grew up in Burlington, but has been in the Hollywood circle for many years. His earliest on-screen credit was a bit part in an episode of Mork and Mindy (ABC, 1978-82), but his first big screen credit was in 1980 in Airplane! Since then, firm roles have included parts in The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), Igby Goes Down (2002), and Adaptation (2002). He has had several television roles on Dallas, Hill Street Blues, Night Court, Matlock, The Practice, CSI: Crime Scene
Investigation, Friends, NCIS and in three Star Trek franchises. Equally at home on the stage, Itzin has had roles in several theater productions, such as The Birthday Party, Waiting for Godot and The Kentucky Circle for which he received a Tony Award nomination. In 2005, Itzin joined the cast of 24 halfway through its fourth season, in the recurring role as Vice President Charles Logan. By the following season the character had become President and was expanded to become one of the leading figures in the storyline. Itzin received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for this performance. Itzin also worked on the movie, “Quantum Theory” and guest stars on TV’s “Hawaii Five-O.”
Kelly Kahl Kelly Kahl is a 1985 graduate of Burlington High School and, as Ron puts it, the class “was a pretty intellectual crew.” Not long after earning his bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1989, Kahl made his way to Hollywood, serving a variety of roles with Lorimar Television and Warner Bros. Television.
Kahl joined CBS in January 1996 and, in the years since, has held a variety of roles with the venerable broadcasting company, donning such titles as vice president of scheduling and senior executive vice president of CBS Primetime. Kahl held the later position for a dozen years, before his promotion to president of entertainment at CBS. In his new position, Kahl handles a variety of roles on the business side of the equation – including marketing and promotion, digital and interactive efforts, diversity, publicity, research and scheduling.

BURLINGTON THROUGH THE AGES
– THROUGH THE AGES
he first “jack-knife” claim on Burlington was made around Dec. 15, 1835, when Moses Smith and William Whiting carved their names and date on trees. Since then, Burlington has continued to grow and has become known for many reasons including the Underground Railroad, the Burlington Liar’s Club, Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys, Hollywood actor Greg Itzin, World’s Strongest man, William Kazmaier and of course Nestle USA and ChocolateFest. In the early to mid 1800s many people in Burlington were connected with the “underground railroad.” The first “passenger” through Wisconsin was 16-year-old Caroline Quarles, who ran away from her mistress in St. Louis in 1842 and made her way to Milwaukee. There she was befriended and later betrayed by a former slave. With bounty hunters closing in, Quarles was brought to the Spring Prairie area. Here she was sheltered on farms near Burlington for several days before being taken by buggy to Detroit, where she crossed into Canada. The last known “passenger” in this area was Joshua Glover, also from St. Louis, who had escaped to Racine in 1852. He was living and working near there, when in 1854 he was arrested and taken to the Milwaukee jail. Hearing of his capture, a crowd used a battering ram to break him out of jail. Because no safe ship was immediately available at Racine, Glover was brought to the Burlington area and hidden for several weeks before being taken back to Racine and put aboard a Great Lakes ship, which took him to Canada. Burlington is also famous around the world (some say the universe), as the home of the Burlington Liar’s Club. The club, which has received tall tales
from as far away as New Zealand and China, meets on New Year’s Eve to select a championship lie for the year. In honor of this tradition and to celebrate this unique brand of American humor, the Tall Tales Trail was born. The Tall Tales Trail is a tour of some of the championship lies from the club’s 80-year history, which are displayed on clearly bronze plaques throughout the Burlington area. Burlington has also gained a reputation for chocolate. In 1987, Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson and the Wisconsin state legislature officially designated Burlington as Chocolate City, USA, in honor of the Nestle Chocolate and Confection Company’s 20-year anniversary in our city.
Since that time, Burlington has celebrated America’s favorite flavor with a Chocolate Festival each year over Memorial Day weekend. Music, children’s activities, a Chocolate Parade and, of course, CHOCOLATE can all be found at the festival! ChocolateFest is a wonderful family activity as well as an event in which the entire community participates. Although Burlington continues to grow, it maintains its small town charm. Increased interest in the historic significance of the city’s buildings has led to efforts to preserve Burlington’s historic past.

Rustic Roads If you prefer finished roads running under your tires, our many miles of scenic rustic roads and quiet country lanes may be just what you’re looking for! Try any one of the routes below for an afternoon of fun as you take in Burlington’s more rural beauty. Racine County boasts the most Rustic Roads of any county in Wisconsin, with seven charming roads and a combined total of 27.1 miles of natural beauty for you to explore. Any one of these Rustic Roads will make for a great bicycling route or leisurely car ride. In addition to the wealth of Rustic Roads in our own Racine County, our neighbor to the west, Walworth County, is home to five Rustic Roads that add an additional 24.8 miles of back country to take in!

Location: Racine County. North from Burlington along Honey Lake Road, Maple Lane and Heritage Road to County Road D. Continuing north along Maple Drive to WIS 83. Length: 7.9 miles Surface: Paved Under a canopy of trees, this route provides vistas of rolling fields and dairy farms. There is a marsh with waterfowl, muskrat houses and other wildlife in the Wehmhoff Woodland Preserve.

RUSTIC ROADS
Location: Racine County. Includes portions of Hillcrest, Hanson, Division and Malchine Roads between County Road K and WIS 36. Length: 2.3 miles Surface: Paved This route passes through woods, rolling meadows, and lowland marshes abounding in native vegetation and wildlife. Along the route a historic, one-room school house can be seen. Location: Racine County. Three Mile Road, starting at 108th Street east to its intersection with County Road U. Length: 1.8 miles Surface: Paved Numerous old oak trees and rail fences border the winding route which has never been widened or had its basic course changed since it was originally laid out in the early 1800s.
Rustic Road 5 Location: Racine County. Loomis Road beginning at WIS 164, north to Fries Lane and the intersection of Fries Lane and WIS 36. Length: 3.1 miles Surface: Paved Loomis Road was originally laid out as a territorial road in 1840 and retains much of its original rustic lines. This route passes by Col. Heg Memorial Park, which commemorates Wisconsin’s top ranking officer who was killed in action during the Civil War. A museum in the park emphasizes the heritage of a group of Norwegian settlers and their contribution to the development of Wisconsin. There is also a small log cabin, which was built in 1837 and moved to the park in 1928.
Rustic Road 25 Location: Racine County. Oak Knoll Road from County Road DD to its junction with County Road D. Length: 2.6 miles Surface: Paved Adjacent to the Honey Creek Wildlife area, this road passes by the Franklyn Hazelo Home (c. 1858), which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Location: Racine County. Includes Hoosier Creek Road, Wheatland Road and Brever Road from County Road JB to WIS 142. Length: 5.7 miles Surface: Paved A canopy of large oak and black walnut trees graces Wheatland Road, just south of WIS 142. Travelers to this area will enjoy the open agricultural and marsh vistas in addition to an old brick farmhouse and several barns. Hoosier Creek Road is 1/2 mile away from the Fox River, providing fishing areas and some nice panoramic views. Note: Due to safety concerns, Hoosier Creek Road is closed at the railroad tracks (near County Road JB) and is no longer a continuous north-south route. Brever Road was added to the route in 1993.
Rustic Road 43 Location: Racine/Kenosha Counties. County Road B from the intersection of WIS 142 in Kenosha County to its intersection with WIS 11 in Racine County. Length: 3.7 miles Surface: Paved This route passes through open agricultural land with few residences, and provides direct access to the Bong Recreational Area.

here’s always something to do in Burlington! No matter the time of year, you’re sure to find something to enjoy in our great outdoors. Spring and Summer are bursting with color and full of fun and exciting opportunities to enjoy the warmer months. Spend an afternoon canoeing down the Fox River, golfing, hiking or biking one of our many trails, lounging around at the Fischer County Park beach, boating on one of our four area lakes, or fishing on the banks of the White River. Additional canoe and kayak launches can be found at Case Eagle Park above and below the Rochester Dam. They are easily accessible from the parking lot within the park and allow water recreation on the Fox River south into and through Burlington or north into Waterford. Fall is a wonderful time to get out and explore all that Burlington has to offer! Spectacular scenes await you in late September and early October with the great variety of trees that Southeastern Wisconsin provides. Taking a drive or a bike ride along one of our seven Rustic Roads (the most of any Wisconsin County) is a great way to see our
brilliant fall colors. Rustic road maps can be found in this Guide Book as well as online at www.dot.wisconsin.gov. The winter months hold much beauty and excitement on the many lakes and rivers surrounding Burlington. Whether you enjoy skating, hockey, fishing/ice fishing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, or making snow angels, one thing is for sure – when it comes to winter fun, Burlington has it all! In addition to all of the outdoor possibilities found all over Burlington, we also have John Margis Wildlife Area just south on Fish Hatchery Road, north of Bohner’s Lake. This area has paths which lead to a marsh for wildlife viewing and beautiful overlooks within the wildlife area. Just east of Burlington is our local State Recreation Area. Richard Bong State Recreation Area is open yearround offering camping, nature classes, and 41.1 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, snowshoeing, and dirt bike riding. WHITE RIVER TRAIL Just a short ride from downtown Burlington, this crushed limestone trail begins at Spring Valley Road, just west of Burlington off Highway 36 and goes through Lyons and Springfield.

The route takes you past the “Pedal & Cup” (offering bike rentals, snacks and drinks May through September) in Springfield. The final segment of the ride runs into Burlington’s neighboring city of Elkhorn. Numerous bridges, scenic vistas, quaint towns, farmlands and wetlands offer great views along the way. SENO KRLT CONSERVANCY The Seno KRLT Conservancy is 131 acres of forest, fields, prairie and wetlands located in southeast Wisconsin’s rolling Kettle Moraine country. The goals of The Center are: 1. To provide educational opportunities for educators, students, landowners and the general public; and 2. To demonstrate sustainable management of forest and related resources. Dr. Elvira Seno wished that her beloved “Slippery Slopes” tree farm would become a place for children to learn about trees and nature. Dr. Seno passed away in November of 1996, but she saw her dream fulfilled in her last year as buses full of children came to learn about forests and nature on her beautiful farm. The buildings and grounds can be rented and are perfect for showers, weddings, birthdays, and anniversaries. Just about anything you can think of can be beautifully celebrated at Seno. SEVEN WATERS TRAIL The Seven Waters Trail passes near: Wind Lake, Waubeesee Lake, Muskego Creek, Fox River, Long Lake Creek, White River and Echo Lake. The gravel trail begins at Highway 142 at Bushnell Park in the Town of Burlington, enters the City of Burlington near Riverside Park following the beautiful Fox River. The trail runs north along the east side of Highway 36 crossing Highway 36 to join a newly constructed segment in the Rochester area. This new segment of the trail winds through Saller Woods, connecting to Eagle Case Park, before joining the previous trail ¬to run north past Waterford and Wind Lake. Canoe and kayak launches have also been added to Case Eagle Park. The construction of the new segment, which is composed of blacktop, creates a seamless link from one end of the county to the other. The final segment of the trail is on the east side of Highway 36 and proceeds northward to the Waukesha County line (City of Muskego).

Roots of Freedom – Wisconsin’s
The Brown’s Lake Aquaducks perform water ski shows at Fischer Park on Hwy. 11 in Burlington every Thursday evening, Memorial Day through Labor Day. The Junior Show starts at 5 p.m. with the Main Show following it at 6:30 p.m. All shows are free and open to the public. The Brown’s Lake Aquaducks are a Burlington, Wisconsin water ski club. The club focuses on show skiing, including traditional and barefoot water ski activities, jump acts, trick and shoe skiing, swivel skiing, human pyramids, and girls’ ballet line. The club teaches people how to ski and has hosted Learn to Ski Clinics, Boat Driver Training Clinics and Safety Clinics. Visit the Aquaducks online at www. aquaducks.org.

Historical Treasures in the Burlington, Rochester, and Spring Prairie Areas The Underground Railroad was the first “railroad” to reach the Wisconsin Territory and the Burlington, Rochester, and Spring Prairie area had multiple waystations on the Wisconsin route. Several pioneer residents of the area were active abolitionists, who participated directly or indirectly in what was then an illegal enterprise – helping runaway slaves on their way to freedom. Dr. Edward G. Dyer, of Burlington, was a leading abolitionist and sometimes referred to as the CommanderBurlington Farmers’ Market in-Chief of the Underground Railroad for this area. Burlington Rotary Barons The Burlington Rotary Barons are a semi-professional amateur baseball team that began in 1997. The team is comprised of young men that were high school standouts and are currently playing college baseball, or have college baseball experience, and live in the Burlington area. The team plays in the Land O’ Lakes Southwest league. This league is comprised of similar baseball talent from communities all across southeastern Wisconsin, from Milwaukee to Kenosha and as far west as Janesville. The team plays its home games at Beaumont Field, across from Echo Lake in Burlington. Their season runs from May through the end of August. Ever wonder why it’s called Beaumont Field? It’s named after Ginger Beaumont, a Rochester native and former Honey Creek resident who was the first batter in the first World Series in 1903. Beaumont played in a time known as the “dead-ball” era, where home runs were scarce and getting on base was the goal. Beaumont, who possessed elite speed and hit for average, once beat out six infield singles in one game. He led the National League in hitting three straight seasons (only five other people have done that). Also, he was the 1902 batting champion of baseball with a .357 average. With a .311 career batting average, the argument could be made that Beaumont, who was a part of three pennant-winning teams with the Pittsburgh Pirates, should be in the Hall of Fame. He had started his career just five years earlier with the old minor league Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers traded him to Pittsburgh in 1900, and he played for the Pirates for eight seasons. He also played for the Boston Braves. In 1951, five years before his death, Beaumont was inducted into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame.
Southern Lakes Blue Devils The Southern Lakes Blue Devils semi-professional football team is always ready to play! They bill themselves as the “working man’s NFL.” For years, many talented players graduated from high school and were forced to leave football behind. This venue offers non-college bound players a chance to continue playing. Co-owners and managers,

Tom Hawkins and his wife Dorothy, are passionate about the game. The league is composed of teams from southeastern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. Home games are played at Westosha Central High School in Paddock Lake with all other games being held within a two hour drive from Burlington. The Blue Devils are one of 13 teams that are members of the Iron Athletes Football League.

Burlington residents are in the best position to benefit from Gateway’s technical college resources. There are two Gateway centers in Burlington, and, equally important, Burlington is the geographic center of Gateway’s district, so each of Gateway’s other facilities in Kenosha, Walworth and Racine counties are within easy reach of the Burlington area resident. Gateway Technical College offers about 65 career education options in the areas of Health Occupations, Manufacturing, Engineering, Service Occupations, Business and Marketing, and Information Technology. Gateway’s Burlington Center, on one side of Burlington High School, features a registered nurse preparatory associate degree in nursing program. Burlington’s HERO Center, located on the other side of the high school, offers the Fire-Medic program, Paramedic program and EMT,
Fire Officer and 911 dispatch training. Gateway is an excellent choice for those planning to move directly to career or to a 4-year university. Employers have reported a 97% satisfaction rate in the Gateway graduates they’ve hired and more than 85% of all Gateway grads report being employed within six months of graduation. Many, though, choose to continue to a four-year bachelor’s degree. Gateway and numerous colleges and universities have transfer agreements that allow all or a large part of their Gateway education to transfer. Gateway offers flexible scheduling including day and nighttime classes, Saturdays, and a large number of online courses, including entire programs offered online.
