World premiere of ‘Elisa Monte Dance Does Brubeck’ comes to College of Lake County Gravity-defying physical power, as well as winding and twisting dance that bridges cultural barriers, highlights the world premiere of “Elisa Monte Dance Does Brubeck” at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, at the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts at the College of Lake County, 19351 W. Washington St., Grayslake. Diverse, daring, passionate and united in spirit, the acclaimed, New York-based modern dance features eight powerful dancers showcasing their talents in a two-act work. They will perform to the sounds of Triple Play, a trio of multi-talented musicians featuring the music of Dave Brubeck and his son, Chris. They will perform Brubeck standards including “Blue Rondo,” “Unsquare Dance” and “Take Five.” The dance company founder Elisa Monte is an accomplished dancer and renowned choreographer. Her resume includes roles as principal dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company, Lar Lubovitch and Pilobolus. Monte’s earliest work, “Treading,” (1979), has been followed by nearly 50 other creations, including choreography created in residencies around the world. The virtuosic, versatile artists of Triple Play will perform folk, blues, jazz
and classical music. The trio features Peter Madcat Ruth (harmonica, guitar, jaw harp, percussion and vocals); Joel Brown (folk and classical guitar and vocals) and Chris Brubeck (electric bass, bass trombone, piano and vocals). Tickets are $40 or $35 for adults; $39 or $34 for seniors, College of Lake County staff and alumni; $15 for students and teens and $10 for College of Lake County students who show a College of Lake County I.D. or class schedule at the box office. Prices do not include an additional $2 per ticket facility fee. The box office is is open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and located on the Grayslake Campus, Room P112. Lake County Sheriff’s Gang Task Force arrest 14 men in undercover operation In February, the Lake County Sheriff’s Gang Task Force went undercover, arresting 14 men in a continued national campaign to suppress the demand for purchased sex, according to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office press release. According to the release, the Lake County Sheriff’s Gang Task Force joined a coalition of federal and local law enforcement agencies in a nationwide operation, which specifically targeted customers of prostitutes known as “Johns.” This was a web-based operation and utilized classified advertising websites, regularly used as a medium for prostitution. When the “Johns” arrived and offered money to the undercover detectives for sexual acts, they were arrested and transported to the Lake County Jail. Over the past eight years, this nationwide effort led to the arrests of more than 9,000 total “Johns” and sex traffickers. “There is no doubt a correlation between ‘Johns’ and women being sex trafficked. Sex traffickers take women and juveniles to areas where purchased sexual acts are in
high demand, and northeastern Illinois is no exception. Our Gang Task Force will do everything they can to rescue and protect those being forced into involuntary servitude,” said Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg. Charitable organization helps many in need during January As we work toward matching the Family Foundation’s $30,000 grant in continuing our good works, I would like to share how we have helped our fellow creations this past month. In January we helped 48 people with rent, utilities, car repairs, beds, food, gas, toiletries, household necessities, clothing and pet care. • We helped people such as Diana, who graciously had taken in her older brother, who was in hospice due to a brain tumor. When he took a turn for the worst, she found herself missing work and falling behind on bills. After realizing he needed more care than she could provide while raising two children and working full time, she finally moved him to a care facility. Unfortunately, she was already behind in her rent and utilities. For two months she struggled to get caught up, but late fees made her fall further behind. Thanks to your donations, we helped this single mother catch up on her rent and prevent them from being evicted. • Charlie is a Vietnam veteran who struggles each day due to his failing health. He shared some of the physical and psychological anguish he endured during the war, and this has carried over to every area of his life. He no longer can do physically taxing jobs. He is waiting to receive disability assistance due to the beginning stages of Parkinson’s disease. We helped Charlie

with his overdue rent and provided him with a new bed — he had not enjoyed a new bed his whole adult life. Since then he reported that his pain is gone for now. We hope and pray our assistance allows him to continue to improve every day. • Mark and Carrie are nearly senior citizens who have worked hard their whole lives. They had their own business years ago before losing it during the past recession. Now they work in factories, unable to use their business experience, just so they can pay the bills. They continue to pay off debts and, after foreclosure, live in a small apartment. Last month Mark suffered a health scare that put him in the hospital for two weeks and unable to work for four weeks. They found themselves behind in their bills again and unable to pay for a much-needed car repair. Thanks to your donations, Mark and Carrie were given assistance with rent and funds to repair their vehicle. This helping hand is just what they needed to get back on track. • Vivian is a senior citizen who endangered her own housing by helping her homeless daughter and two grandchildren. Vivian is like any mother and grandmother who would

In one of these families, the father was looking for a full-time job. We gave him some tips about gaining employment. Another father suffered health issues that prevented him from working, but the mother had just gotten a job. When they retain fulltime employment, they will receive further assistance with security deposits and first month’s rent. So, at least they will not be living in the freezing cold in their cars with children. • A recently widowed mother of a 2-year-old, who also is pregnant, was given help getting back on her feet. Her husband died two months ago, leaving her in shock and grief stricken. The stress caused her to have many complications in her pregnancy, which eventually put her in the hospital on bed rest. Her daughter is living with her sister while she waits out the last month in bed. The woman had to let her apartment go, and her sister put her belongings in storage. Now that she soon will be released from the hospital, she needs to find
an apartment and a job to begin after her recovery. The sister has offered to let her stay with her while she recovers, but with only a one-bedroom apartment it will be too crowded to stay for long. They have decided the best plan will be for them to get an apartment together so the sister can help with the children and the rent. After many lengthy phone conversations with this widowed mother, she proved to me that she was ready for this plan. “I can’t stay in bed anymore once this baby is born. I am ready to get a job and take care of my family.” That is great news because she gave birth in the first week of January and last week she and her sister moved into an affordable two-bedroom apartment. New beds will be delivered along with gift cards for food, household necessities and gas. The woman will be starting a new job soon, so the combination of the sisters’ income will be enough for
them to get by. • A senior citizen has been sent to one of our caring dentists for proper care. She was living in terrible pain and suffered from food insecurity. While she waits for her final appointment, we have provided gift cards for food and toiletries.

Lake County Sheriff’s Gang Task Force concluded a three-month investigation into an individual illegally selling prescription pills out of his residence on Feb. 4, 2019, according to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office press release. During the investigation, Homero Cadena, 32, of the 900 block of North Avenue, Waukegan, sold Amphetamine, a Schedule II Controlled Substance, and pills of Alprazolam, a Schedule IV Controlled Substance, to an undercover Gang Task Force Detective on multiple occasions, according to the release. “Cadena was arrested without incident on Feb. 4,” the release stated. He was subsequently charged with four counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, class one felonies. “All too often we hear from those in opioid recovery that abusing prescription medications was their

The daughter has acquired a job and the mother has caught up on her rent. • A handicapped man was provided funds to repair his wheelchair-accessible van. With limited income and high utility bills, this repair would not have been completed until spring, making it impossible for him to get to his medical care or therapies until then. The danger of missing medical care when you have a chronic condition is a problem we encounter too often. • Several families living in motels were given assistance with food, diapers, toiletries and winter

College of Lake County Foundation names Joe Sweeney as major gifts officer The College of Lake County Foundation has named Joe Sweeney as major gifts officer. Sweeney, who started Jan. 7, has more than 30 years of experience in development and fundraising. Most recently, he served as regional director of the USA Midwest Province of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Prior to that, he worked eight and a half years for his alma mater, Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, as senior development director and as vice president for development. During his time at the university, Saint Mary’s opened a $19.7-million-dollar state-of-the-art Science and Leaning Center in 2017. Additionally, Sweeney helped initiate and grow
the First Generation Initiative endowment, which started with less than $500,000 and now is approaching Joe Sweeney $5 million in donations. The Initiative endowment ensures dollars to support first-generation students at Saint Mary’s. Sweeney’s experience also includes nearly 12 years as vice president for development at Loyola Academy. He also spent seven years as director of development at Carmel Catholic High School and six years as executive director of Boys Hope Girls Hope in
Cincinnati. “We are delighted that Joe has joined our team, and thankful for his experience and expertise,” said College of Lake County Foundation Executive Director Kurt Peterson. “His role is essential to the Foundation as it seeks to engage its major donors in new and significant ways.” “CLC’s mission – to deliver high quality, accessible learning opportunities to advance student success and strengthen the diverse communities we serve – is well stated. Sweeney, who holds a Bachelor’s of the Arts in psychology from Saint Mary’s, has called Lake County his home since the late 1980s and has four adult children and one granddaughter. He said one of his daughters, Katie, is a College of Lake County graduate who completed a bachelor’s degree from North Park University and plans to complete her master’s degree in counseling this spring from National Lewis University. “For me, it just makes sense to join a team that helps to make learning opportunities accessible for Lake County and the surrounding area,” he said. Antioch Woman’s Club in search of vendors for its sales
The Antioch Woman’s Club is in search of vendors for its Community-Wide Sales to benefit Open Arms Mission and other Lake County human services organizations. These fundraising events will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, and Saturday, Sept. 7, in the pavilions at Williams Park, 400 Williams St., Antioch. A small donation is required to rent spaces. Vendors keep all profits. Reserve a 10-by-10 foot space for $20 donation and a 10-by-20 foot space for $30 donation. Dawson named ‘Correctional Officer of the Year’
Lake County Sheriff John D. Idleburg announced that Correctional Officer Dionne Dawson was selected as “Correctional Officer of the Year” by the Illinois Sheriff’s Association. CO Dawson began her career with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office in October of 2010. She is highly enthusiastic, motivated and frequently seeks additional responsibilities. CO Dawson has been trained in every area of the correctional facility and performs exceptionally well in all areas. She actively seeks training opportunities and imparts her knowledge to her peers. She is a Crisis Intervention Team Member, Naloxone Certified Dionne and an instructor of Inter-Personal Dawson Communication Skills. On Jan. 24, 2018, CO Dawson volunteered to take part in the 2018 Point-in-Time Homeless Count. She along with other volunteers searched for, interviewed and aided unsheltered people experiencing homelessness in Lake County. She helped document the needs of Lake County communities and connected people in need with services, which could be of assistance. On July 12, 2018, while assigned as an internaltransport officer, CO Dawson was called to the jail reception area to process a subject who was selfsurrendering on an arrest warrant. When CO Dawson arrived, she saw the subject on the floor, facedown and unresponsive. The person was hardly breathing. CO Dawson recognized the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose. She immediately called a medical emergency and requested Naloxone to the scene. CO Dawson administered three doses of Naloxone with no positive response. A fourth dose of Naloxone was administered and the person became responsive. The subject was taken to the hospital for further treatment and there’s no doubt she survived because of CO Dawson’s life-saving efforts. CO Dawson was honored on Feb. 4, 2019, as “Correctional Officer of the Year” at the Illinois Sheriff’s Association banquet held in East Peoria. “I couldn’t be prouder of Correctional Officer Dawson’s dedication and willingness to serve the people of Lake County. CO Dawson comes to work every day with a terrific attitude, takes great pride in helping others, and frequently goes above and beyond. Congratulations CO Dawson on being named Correctional Officer of the Year,” said Sheriff John Idleburg.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office announces results from traffic safety campaign Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced the results from its weekend traffic safety campaign that ran from Friday, Feb. 1, through Monday, Feb. 4. Over the campaign, deputies arrested one person for
driving under the influence of alcohol, one person wanted on an arrest warrant and issued 31 seat belt citations. Of those 31 seat belt citations, seven were issued for children not properly restrained. A total of 54 traffic citations were
issued. Sheriff’s Deputies conducted 43 hours of extra traffic safety patrols during the enforcement period. The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” enforcement effort ran to keep impaired drivers
off the roads and ensure more people buckle up for safety. “We are out there arresting drunk drivers and reminding motorists to buckle-up, because it saves lives. All too often we respond to fatal traffic crashes caused by
drunk drivers, and we will do everything we can to prevent these tragedies from occurring.” said Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg. The recent law enforcement campaign was made possible by federal highway

Making your bed gets the day off to orderly start We all wake up in the morning – unless we work the night shift. Then we go to bed in the morning and wake in the evening. But despite differing schedules, we all have some sort of beginning to our waking hours each day/ night. We all have to wake up. The alternative isn’t pretty. Further, the vast majority of us sleep on a bed with a pillow and some sort of covers to keep us warm and help us feel secure. At least that’s how it is for me.

bed. It’s a trend. For real. For most, morning routines ensue as we try to scrub, straighten and brush out the dishevelment that eight hours of dream-filled shut-eye produces. During this routine, two types of personalities emerge. This pertains to the details you pay attention to first thing in the morning. You probably have habits that involve personal care, but do you also pay homage to your sleeping space, whether it is with or sans top sheet? There are two types of people in this world: those who make the bed and those who don’t. You are either one or the other, but not both. People who don’t make the bed may be realists who are concerned with time management. If you make your bed in the morning, you are only going to mess it up again at night, making the bedmaking process necessary again in about 24 hours. Doing the same thing over and over, day after day may not seem like the best use of time. I beg to differ. We do
lots of things day after day, time after time. Showering. Changing underwear. Eating toast. Charging our phones. Worrying about things we can’t change. Avoiding the laundry. Making the bed. It takes less than a minute and lasts much longer than that. You can’t say the same about other things pertaining to the bed. You may have guessed: I am a bed-making advocate. I have my reasons. Making the bed gets your day off to an orderly start. The pillows are in place, the sheets pulled taut. All is right with the world. It is a quick and easy task that provides benefits and surprising repercussions throughout the entire day. It’s a good way to impress yourself. Each time you walk into the room you are reminded: Hey, I made the bed! I’m a doer. I get things done! We all benefit from feeling a little better about ourselves. We hold our heads a little higher. We walk with a skip in our step. Brushing our teeth doesn’t accomplish this and most of us complete that
