County Board poses referenda questions on Nov. 6 ballot By Dee Longfellow FOR THE INDEPENDENT

The DuPage County Board has put three tax-related referendum questions on the Nov. 6th General Election ballot. It should be noticed that the questions are not binding, but rather, are seeking voters’ opinions on certain issues. Two of the questions are seeking voters’ input on revenue-raising proposals being debated in Springfield. One asks voters to weigh in on a proposal to help reduce state debt. The other asks for opinions on an alternative method to fund transportation projects. The third question focuses on the county’s Accountability, Consolidation, and Transparency (ACT) Initiative. “Responses to these questions will provide the Board with important feedback and guidance as various proposals are debated in Springfield,” said county board chairman Dan Cronin. “Our residents already face some of the highest property taxes in the nation.” The referendum questions will appear on the ballot as follows: • “Shall DuPage County oppose the General Assembly instituting a property tax increase equivalent to 1% of your home’s value to help retire state debt?” • “Shall DuPage County oppose the creation of a statewide Vehicle Mileage Tax (VMT) which would tax DuPage County citizens based upon the number of miles driven annually?” • “Shall DuPage County continue to dissolve and consolidate units of local government to reduce costs,

increase efficiencies, and increase accountability?” The 2018 General Election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 6. To view a fact sheet on the referendum questions, please visit dupageco.org/ CountyBoard/Docs/57996.

(Ed. note: As a public service, the Independent would like to caution its readers to pay attention to the verbs used in the referenda questions. The first question asks if the county board should oppose a property tax increase to help retire state debt.

Therefore, if you oppose a property tax increase you want to vote ‘yes,’ asking the board to ‘oppose’ it. Likewise, the second question asks if the county board should oppose a mileage tax. If you do not want a tax on the miles you drive, you want to

vote ‘yes,’ indicating that you want the county to oppose the tax. The third question is fairly straightforward, asking if the county should continue to reduce and consolidate redundant units of government. If you want them to continue, vote ‘yes.’)

Slimy, slippery seeds

An adult leader joins three girls in pulling all the seeds out of a pumpkin, which were then divided in groups of 10 to play counting games. It was all part of “Pumpkin Math,” held in Mrs. Peluso’s second grade classroom at Ardmore School. Separating and dividing up all those slippery seeds was easier said than done!
