Message from the

President

hank you for the opportunity to serve as president of the Willowbrook-Burr Ridge Chamber of Commerce. This is truly a special group of people and businesses interested in supporting each other and the community as they grow and to have the chance to represent you in some way is truly an honor. This being my first year as president I would like to take a moment to introduce myself. I am a District Manager for Farmers Insurance, meaning I run my own small business and am contracted by Farmers Insurance to manage agents across the Chicagoland area. I started with Farmers as an agent in Libertyville and worked for the district there before taking over this business in October of 2015. I currently manage 32 agents from as far north as Round Lake and south to Flossmoor and Plainfield and in between. As far as my background is concerned, I have a Bachelor’s degree in Finance from Michigan State University (Go Spartans!) and a Masters in Teaching from National-Louis University. I had a variety of jobs and had planned to go into teaching, but realized I wanted to control my destiny. That lead me to join with Farmers with the plan of opening my own office. I love Burr Ridge due to its incredibly accessible location, but also due to the people I have met these past 5 years I got started with the Chamber in 2016 because it just seemed like that was what I was supposed to do as a business owner and sporadically attended luncheons for the first year. Needless to say, I didn’t get to know people very well though everyone I met was incredibly friendly and welcoming. In the beginning of 2017,

Brad Kmetz, mentioned it was good to see me since it had been a while since the last luncheon I attended. I realized my absence had been noticed and I had two choices, continue to be sporadic and gain nothing from the chamber or start to engage deeply and truly be a part of the group. I chose to dive into the chamber at that time and it has truly been one of the best decisions I have made. I joined the Board of Directors in 2018 and in 2019 became part of the Executive Board as the Secretary. I also was a Co-Committee Chair for both the Golf and Social committees during this time and in 2019 was named Director of the Year by my fellow Directors. I view chamber membership as part good for business, part civic duty to give back to the businesses in the Villages, and part working towards the future because the chamber has so much that it does for the Villages and as it grows so will the businesses. Unfortunately, 2020 was a year of turmoil to say the least with Covid-19 hurting so many businesses and the chamber certainly saw its share of changes from it. We made the decision to go virtual with our luncheons very early and even formed a Virtual Committee to try and get the most from those times. We had virtual networking events and when there was an allowance for in person meetings we took advantage where we could with Mix and Mingle pop up events. We did feel that it was in the best interest of all involved to cancel the Business Expo, the Cruisin’ 66 Car Show, and the Golf Outing due to the virus. Our Women in Business committee was able to pivot from the Giving Tree program of prior years into a Food Drive with great results. Going forward in 2021 we are

uncertain when we will be able to again meet for luncheons or the networking pop ups, but as soon as we are safely able to, we are all anxious to have monthly events again. We have seen some great virtual events in the meantime, including a fitness advice program, social media training, and even a craft beer tasting, so I heavily encourage you to look for future events from the Chamber! A big advancement for the chamber over the past year was the revamping of the chamber website. Thanks to one of our newest Board Members, Lisl Hector, we were able to transition our website and back room processing to allow for online payments, updates on local matters including virus regulations and news, and we even have a Promote Section to allow Chamber members free online advertising which are sent daily to subscribed members. This is a huge benefit from the chamber as everyone that promotes will increase the visibility of both the chamber members and their businesses with every post. In closing the success of the chamber and its members really comes down to the activity of the membership, so get involved! There are many stories of the business generated and relationships achieved by members taking part in the activities of the chamber. This is a place to meet like-minded individuals and as you are more and more active your relationships and the value of the chamber will grow too. I want to thank all of our membership, directors, and the chamber administrators for all the hard work put into the chamber and promise that we will continue to do all we can to help us all grow in 2021. HISTORY OF YOUR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE The Willowbrook/Burr Ridge Chamber of Commerce and Industry was originally formed as the “Business Peoples Association” in 1980 to work in harmony with government and community leaders. The organization was chartered a year later as the Chamber of Commerce of Willowbrook. County Line Road Over I-55 Bridge: The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Federal Highway administration (FHWA) finished an $8 million replacement of the County Line Road bridge over I-55 in early 2015. The project included aesthetic enhancements to the bridge that continue the Village’s branding theme established along County Line Road and the Burr Ridge Village Center. Incorporating these design elements was a rare opportunity that better identifies downtown Burr Ridge from I-55 and creates a more attractive entryway for all Village residents and businesses The Village’s enhancements were funded by a $1.4 million grant through the State of Illinois Transportation Enhancement program. The 20% contribution of local funding required as a condition of the grant was paid for by the Hotel/Motel Tax Fund, which can only be used for tourism-related programs and beautification within the Village. No resident tax dollars were used for the project. Brush Pickup: The Village offers curbside brush pickup every fall. Information pertaining to program dates and requirements is available on the Village’s web site and the Cable Bulletin Board/Ch. 6 for Comcast, Ch. 99 on AT&T. Vehicle Stickers/Tags: While vehicle stickers are not required, many residents find it advantageous to have one. Generic stickers are available for a small fee at the Police Department. Refuse Collection & Recycling: Collection of refuse and recyclable materials is handled by Groot Industries. Curbside recycling services are offered for all single family households, and in townhouse developments that have curbside pickup of refuse. Recycling programs are also available for multi-family developments. Residents will receive information regarding the particulars of the service when they arrange for services through Groot Industries, Information regarding the village scavenger service is available at www.burrridge.gov. Voter Registration: Eligible voters may register at Village Hall by appearing in person with two forms of identification one showing the applicant’s current address - during regular business hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Public Transportation: Burlington Northern passenger railroad stations are located in the neighboring Villages of Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale and Western Springs. PACE bus service is available throughout the Village, routes may be confirmed online through the PACE website. Schedules are also available at the Village Hall. Commuters can go downtown directly via the Stevenson Expressway (I-55) as well. Metra commuter train services are also available in nearby Willow Springs. Building Permits: Building permits are required for a variety of projects, such as work in the public right-of-way, alterations to an existing structure that include plumbing or electrical work, grading changes, fences, pools, etc. Before beginning work, residents and businesses should call the Community Development Department at (630) 6548181, to learn about the Village’s permit requirements. Information regarding building permits is also available at www.burr-ridge. gov. History: The area which is now Burr Ridge was once the home of the Sioux, Pottawattamie, Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. After an 1835 treaty, most of the Indians were relocated west of the Mississippi. In the early 1950’s, the area was sparsely settled, and large tracts of land were devoted to farming. On October 30, 1956, a one-square-mile area bounded by Old Route 66, County Line Road, 79th Street and the east line of the Denemark

The Pleasantview Fire Protection District serves the rest of the Village. Both fire districts, which are taxing bodies separate from the Village and serving more than Burr Ridge, provide both fire protection and paramedic ambulance services.

Farm was incorporated as the Village of Harvester. In August, 1961, the territory north of Route 66, including the 414 acre International Harvester research facility (now the J. I. Case facility and the Walsh, Higgins development) was annexed to the Village; and in August of the following year, the name of the community was changed to Burr Ridge to denote the stand of burr oak trees on a ridge along County line Road near Plainfield Road. The burr oak leaf became the Village emblem. Shortly after the change in the Village’s name, the former Babcock dairy farm was annexed to the Village for development as Carriage Way. Milk from this farm had been processed and distributed to the Chicago Guernsey Dairy Center, now the site of Sedgley Estates. Over the years, development changed the look of the area. Today, Burr Ridge encompasses approximately seven square miles located approximately 19 miles southwest of the Loop. It is generally bounded on the east by Wolf Road, on the north by 55th Street, on the west by Madison Street (and Route 83 in the southern portion of the Village) and on the south by approximately 97th Street. w w w. w b b r c h a m b e r. o r g

The Village of Willowbrook Village Hall/Administration offices are located at 835 Midway Drive, part of the expanding Village Municipal Complex. The Village Hall construction and Willowbrook Police Department renovations, Phases 1 and 2 of the Municipal Complex project, are complete. A highlight of the final renovation of the Police Department, located at 7760 Quincy Street, is a 9-11 World Trade Center artifact memorial in the lobby. The third and final phase, the reconstruction of the building at 825 Midway Drive, is in progress. When completed this building will become the new Community Resource Center and will house the new Council Chambers, as well as many of the Parks and Recreation Department’s programs. Willowbrook parks The Village of Willowbrook and the Burr Ridge Park District have entered into an intergovernmental agreement to provide Willowbrook residents access to programs and services offered by the Burr Ridge Park District at rates charged to Burr Ridge Park District residents. REFUSE COLLECTION & RECYCLING Single family detached residences are served by Groot Industries under contract with the Village using a cart based collection program. As part of the collection program, all single family residential properties serviced curbside are issued two (2) wheeled carts, one for garbage and one for recycling. Residents are billed directly by Groot Industries on a quarterly basis. Yard waste requires a sticker on a 30 gallon biodegradable Kraft paper bag or an optional cart paid for monthly directly to Groot. Multi family facilities and attached single family units are served by contracts arranged by homeowner’s associations or facility management agencies. SANITATION Sewer and sanitation services are provided by two agencies. Flagg Creek Water Reclamation District which serves the area generally north of Plainfield Road and DuPage County which serves the area generally south of Plainfield Road. WATER The Village’s water system is supplied entirely by Lake Michigan, through the DuPage Water Commission. Since December, 1991, Willowbrook has been receiving approximately 400,000,000 gallons of water yearly from the lake source. The Village has the capacity to store up to 4,000,000 gallons of water in above ground facilities.

HISTORY In 1959, a homeowner’s group called the Ridgemoor Homeowners Association decided to incorporate as a Village in order to be able to guide the development of farmland which surrounded their homes. Changes in the law scheduled to become effective January 1, 1960, which would require a population of 400 for incorporation, caused this group of 167 people to expedite its request to be made a village. In fact, while the case for incorporation was before the court, the attorney for the homeowner’s association called the association president, Anton Borse, frantically asking for a name for the new village. Borse looked out his window and saw the willow trees along the edge of a creek at the back of his property and promptly gave the village its name.
