In the spirit of reconciliation Southern Cross Grammar acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their elders past and present.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE The connection and easy communication between families, students and friends of Southern Cross Grammar has always been a hallmark of our close community. The SCG Magazine adds another way to share our students' stories and growth as well as future directions. Looking through the many stories of success captured in this first edition of the Magazine is a real lift and a welcome break from the many hardships we faced together so admirably in 2020. From perfect scores in Mathematics, through to clever and creative Art being selected for State exhibitions, the Class of 2020 are to be commended for their high achievements. Our school's commitment to each individual is also reflected in the 100% pass rate of the Class of 2020; a collective achievement made all the more significant off the back of numerous transitions between remote and home learning, and the added pressure the pandemic has bought to

all families. Our accelerated students, those doing Year 12 subjects as part of their Year 11 studies, also shone this year with increased study scores in the 40s.

In line with our commitment to Personalisation, a number of students also elected to study a VET course as part of their VCE in 2020. Many students scored personal bests in subjects such as Sport and Recreation, demonstrating that when you select a field of study you have a passion for, and work consistently hard throughout the year, you set yourself up for success in VCE and in Tertiary studies to follow. Over the summer, the SCG staff and our builders have been hard at work preparing the school for 2021 and beyond. Students and staff will notice upgrades around our campus when they return with new laboratories, cleared spaces, additional STEM and Art rooms, a well-equipped Sports Science Gym, new First Aid centre and a beautiful reception space all ready to welcome our community back to a new year of learning. On a grand scale, the Centauri Centre is well underway and on track for opening in 2022. The advances to facilities and the student experience will be felt by everyone as will the expansion of options to study in Libraries and generous spaces throughout the school. Finally, I wish our community a very happy tenth anniversary. In noting this significant milestone, we must also acknowledge the many staff, students

In a year that saw Head Prefects lead by great example Liam Giacchi achieved an outstanding ATAR of 98.90. placing him in the top 2% in the state. As Dux of the class of 2020, a proud SCG founding student who started day one with SCG in 2014, Liam has demonstrated much more than academic success: his kindness, commitment to service to others and his friendly understated manner

Our modern facilities, warm atmosphere and high performance have all been built upon the generosity and hard work of so many. HOMEGROWN DUX Liam Giacchi achieved an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank of 98.90 and a Perfect Score in Further Mathematics, and is the DUX of 2020. An avid Mathematician and Scientist at a young age, some of Liam’s achievements in the subject areas include receiving High Distinctions and Distinctions in the Australian Mathematics Competition from 20142019, winning first place in the 2016 Galway Maths Olympiad and being an Elite Award recipient in the Education Perfect World Series Mathematics and Science Competitions in 2016. Following his success in his VCE studies, Liam plans to study a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)— Master’s Accelerated Program at Monash University specialising in either mechatronics or chemical engineering. ^ Liam during the Year 12 Final Assembly.

Liam joined Southern Cross Grammar in 2012 as a Year 4 student, and in his nine years at Southern Cross Grammar has been a distinguished member of our school. His maturity, passion for his peers and the school community, and zeal to aim high has seen him not only achieve significant accomplishments in his academic studies but also lead his peers in a number of leadership roles spanning from Class Captain, School Captain, to various Portfolio Captain positions and Head Prefect in 2020. In December 2020, Liam added another accolade to his list of achievements, this time as a Southern Cross Grammar Graduate: Dux of 2020. For his Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) Liam studied Specialist Mathematics, Physics, Mathematical Methods, Chemistry, English and Further Mathematics. He scored an impressive ATAR of 98.90 and a perfect Study Score of 50 in Further Mathematics, including high study scores in his other maths subjects; 44 in Specialist Mathematics and 46 in Mathematical Methods.

teacher said, “As a teacher, I am incredibly proud of all our students’ achievements in Further Mathematics. A perfect Study Score is an incredible achievement, and a very deserving result given Liam’s commitment and focus to the subject and the kindness and helpfulness he showed when collaborating with his peers.” Liam balanced navigating the transition to remote learning while completing his Year 12 studies with his role as Head Prefect in 2020 with poise and calm. “I found that despite my responsibility of Head Prefect, I was still able to manage my studies and maintain a balanced life,” he said.

— Mr Matt Dodd Upon hearing the news of his achievement in attaining a perfect study score of 50 in Further Mathematics, Liam was very surprised. “While I was aiming to achieve a high study score for all my subjects, I was still very shocked to have attained a perfect Study Score for Further Maths,” Liam said. “From a young age, Maths has always been a passion of mine where it was my favourite subject at school and as a result I undertook Further Maths, Maths Methods and Specialist Maths during my VCE journey. “I believe that this result wouldn’t have been possible without the strong support I received from my Maths teachers that helped me along the journey. I would like to thank Mr Kendjer, Ms Owen, Ms Vu, Ms Shamoail, Ms Pualic and Ms Bagci whose guidance and encouragement helped me achieve this score.” Trish Vu, Liam’s Further Mathematics

As Liam prepares to begin his studies at Monash University, his advice to the Class of 2021 is to enjoy the year ahead and stay connected to those closest to them. “While most of you might be fixated on the end of year exams, it’s the journey that really matters not the end result. Enjoy the year, and stay connected to your teachers, friends and family as they are your greatest support. At the same time try to keep up with the workload so that you are well prepared at the end of the year. Don’t let the fear and stress of the exams govern your last and, some would say, most memorable year of high school.” The Giacchi family have been involved with our school community since its early years and have described being a part of the school community as a “wonderful experience” for their family. “We have always found SCG to be a very caring and welcoming community,” Liam’s parents, Tania and Sam, said. “Over the past nine years we have not only taken pride in Liam’s achievements and growth as an individual but we have also been proud of the school’s evolvement. The unveiling of the Junior and Senior School buildings, in addition to the

introduction of the VCE curriculum, were all highlights for us as it showed significant growth and progression in the school.” Liam made a special point of acknowledging the efforts of Southern Cross Grammar staff, the school community and Founding Principal, Mr Ponsford for their guidance and encouragement through the years: “Southern Cross Grammar has provided me with opportunities to build my confidence and it has also helped me develop life skills which I am sure will keep me in good stead for the future,” Liam said. “I always felt that I was surrounded by caring and supportive people. All of the teachers I had were willing to work alongside me to enrich my studies, and Mr Ponsford has always been supportive of my education. Having a solid network of friends that I connected well with allowed me to work in an environment that I was comfortable and happy in. "As an Alumni, I am looking forward to seeing the growth and development of the school, especially the opening of the new building. Being able to reconnect with teachers and peers is especially something that I look forward to.”

FORMULA FOR SUCCESS Personalised learning and modern teaching practice saw the Further Mathematics staff foster an environment of high academic performance, leading to significant achievements in the 2020 VCE Exam.

Trish Vu with a Mathematics student To support their students during the many transitions and changes in 2020 Further Mathematics teachers Trish Vu (also the Head of Mathematics) and Jessica Owen committed themselves to Southern Cross Grammar's principles of Learning, Connection and Care, and combined them with modern and personalised teaching practice, to foster an environment of high academic performance, including a Perfect Study score of 50 in the 2020 VCE exam. “We worked with students in small groups via Webex, and prioritised offering personalised learning experiences for every student to give them every opportunity to succeed in their studies and course work,” Trish said. “As a teaching team we had a common set of teaching notes and activities but used our judgement to adjust and modify to best suit our students' strengths and weaknesses." Remaining ever-mindful of the challenges the pandemic posed to students, they also offered additional tutoring and one-on-one sessions for students, and encouraged them to form virtual study groups.

"As VCE teachers, you get used to giving up your spare time to help students that seek you out. Although remote teaching limited the face-toface help I could provide, I was still able to find ways to help students who sought that extra support," Jessica said.

EARLY TERTIARY SUCCESS BOOSTS VCE PERFORMANCE Head Prefect Isabella (Bella) MacPherson took every challenge put in front of her by beginning early entry tertiary study; an experience that boosted her high performance in her VCE exams with study scores in the 40s and an ATAR of 95.85, making her the 2020 Dux Proxime Accessit (Second to Dux). a university student. "Being fully immersed in [university] and having access to—and learning how to use—databases was a really interesting way to see what high school writing is compared to university writing,” Bella said. "We did a week at the end of Semester 1 on how to write an essay and how to approach arguments and express yourself in a critical [and] scholarly way. Those essay skills bled into my History (Revolutions), English and Literature classes as I did a lot of essay subjects."

Bella's ambition and commitment to taking up every opportunity to further her studies and excel academically saw her begin early tertiary study through the University of Melbourne's Extension Program in 2020. Having completed her VCE studies in Italian and Psychology in Year 11, Bella focused on completing Literature units during the Program, as it aligned to her Year 12 subjects: English, Literature, History Revolutions and Further Mathematics. Bella completed Literature and Performance in Semester 1, and Modern and Contemporary Literature in Semester 2. Her studies comprised two lectures and a tutorial per week, and three to four assignments per unit. By taking part in the Extension Program, Bella set herself apart from her peers as she learnt sophisticated ways of approaching research, thinking critically and analysing texts. As a result, her writing became more nuanced as her mindset shifted from thinking like a Year 12 student, to approaching her academic studies as SCG MAGAZINE: ISSUE 1 • 10

approaching university less daunting. She was able to experience six weeks of university life and travel into campus before remote learning, and is excited to be back. Furthermore, by completing the Extension Program Bella received credits, meaning she has further options for flexible learning by either finishing her degree faster or taking a lighter study load in her first year should she wish to do so. Bella’s advice to students preparing to study VCE is to choose subjects they are passionate about.

"2020 made me realise how important every teacher is and [how important] a teacher’s attitude is to your learning." A talented writer and recipient of awards including the Melton City Libraries Short Story Competition, Bella is preparing to begin studying a Bachelor of Arts (Creative Writing) at the University of Melbourne in 2021 and is hoping to also major in International Studies or Politics. She also hopes to teach one day, after being inspired by her experiences with her teachers in 2020. “2020 made me realise how important every teacher is and [how important] a teacher’s attitude is to your learning because [during remote learning] they were able to still motivate students and get them to listen and learn while online," she said. "I was so impressed and in awe of my teachers in 2020 that I think I would love to do a Masters in Teaching and see how it goes.” As Bella prepares to begin her first year studies, she says her early tertiary experience has made

“Just because you pick subjects that are heavily scaled up doesn’t mean you’re going to love them and do [well] in them,” she said. “You can also do just as well in a subject that you love even though they might be scaled down.” We are also pleased to announce Bella was awarded the University of Melbourne Principal's Scholarship for her committment to her studies and performance in her exams. While Bella’s time at Southern Cross Grammar has been short, it is an experience she will not forget. “I feel looking back on it, I have a lot to thank the school for. Having great friends, supportive teachers and a positive learning environment made class not something I had to sit through, but something I became excited to do. “I’m just excited to have SCG on my resume. I can tell everyone, “I went to that school. That was my school, and I graduated from there.””

EXCELLENCE THROUGH APPLIED LEARNING Students’ performance in their 2020 VET Sport and Recreation VCE exam speaks to the power of applied learning and how choosing the right pathway can be the first step towards VCE success. As a personalised school, staff at Southern Cross Grammar understand the importance of providing opportunities for students that cater to their personal strengths and offers them pathways to excellence. Our commitment to providing pathways and dynamic subjects that align with students' interests and skillset was highlighted in the 2020 VCE Exams, with VET Sport and Recreation students achieving their personal best Study Score in the subject exam. Principal Mr Matt Dodd believes that students’ performance in the VET Sport and Recreation exam highlights the importance of students being aware of their personal strengths and skillsets, and matching them to the subjects they decide to pursue in their senior years, saying, “Matching students’ personal strengths, passions and pathways is such a critical part of planning in their final years.” Following his students’ exam, VET Sport and Recreation teacher, Michael Pell, spoke of his students’ passion for the subject and how it influenced their performance throughout their studies and in the VCE exam: “Students were passionate and driven to gain the required skills to succeed [in the subject], and the practical side of the subject allowed them to get hands-on experience, and enjoy

the different challenges that a VET Certificate provides” he said. “Their engagement with class content meant that the work they associated with the subject did not have the same monotony about it, as it showed a clear path forward.” Planning for students' high performance in their final years of school is a continuous process that starts in their early years As Pathways Coordinator, Judith Gowdy explained, "Students are exploring their pathways throughout their school journey. This could be as simple as learning about different kinds of jobs, making their first subject selection in Year 8, visiting Career Expos, talking to family and friends about their jobs, reading the weekly Careers Newsletter, participating in Work Experience and much more." The 2020 VET Sport and Recreation class join a group of superb Alumni who are now studying full time at TAFE or beginning their apprenticeship in their chosen trade pathway. With pathways leading to areas such as sports management, personal training, customer service, and sport science, VET Sport and Recreation students are off on a rewarding and exciting career path.

GRADUATE FLIES HIGH After achieving high results in her VCE exams, Tahlia received news that her life-long dream of joining the Army had been realised. Tahlia has begun her Officer Cadet Training at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA), where she will also be studying a Bachelor of Business at UNSW Canberra. A bright and resilient student, Tahlia was spoilt for choice after also being offered a place at the University of Melbourne to study Commerce. Earning a Cadet role at ADFA is incredibly competitive with applicants partaking in a year-long dual application process consisting of fitness tests, aptitude tests, and interviews with Defence Force members while studying to meet the ATAR requirements for their future studies at UNSW Canberra. A hallmark of Southern Cross Grammar is our highly supportive families and Tahlia is no exception for

this. Tahlia comes from a family with a military background who have always encouraged her to strive for her best and have supported her dream to pursue her own success in the Military. "Our family is incredibly proud of [Tahlia], her achievements to date and the commitment she has undertaken to pursue a life of service and excellence for her country," her mother, Alexie said. "Southern Cross Grammar was a great environment for Tahlia. Her strong friendship groups helped her to develop into a mature, confident and ambitious young lady." At Southern Cross Grammar we value service to others and are incredibly proud and privileged to have Tahlia as a Graduate.

SACHITHA DINESSH MAKES SCG HISTORY Sachitha Dinessh is the youngest student to take a VCE study in Southern Cross Grammar’s history, and achieved the highest language score in the 2020 VCE exams with a Study Score of 34 in Tamil. Sachitha’s passion for Tamil began at home, when she began learning the language as a child. With her family originating from India, she grew up speaking Tamil and with her parents’ support, she decided to study the language as a VCE subject externally. “My parents encouraged me to take classes to learn how to read and write in Tamil," Sachitha said. "My mother was also a Tamil language teacher so she inspired me to continue learning [...] then when it came to VCE my parents encouraged me to take it. Learning a language externally was a different experience for me, and [in 2020] I got to learn all about VCE and

how everything works while studying a VCE subject. " While learning an external language was made even more complicated in 2020, with Sachitha attending all her lessons and completing her SACs online, and Sachitha is proud of her achievement. “During [remote learning] at times it was very stressful to concentrate on Tamil [so] I taught myself to focus and encouraged myself to continue practicing and learning,” she said. For Sachitha, her accomplishment goes beyond receiving a high Study Score; it has strengthened her connection with her language and

culture. “Completing [Tamil] made me very proud of myself and I know my family was very proud that I successfully learnt my mother tongue,” she said. “Being able to study Tamil has helped me to be open to the opportunity to teach the language to other young children and share my knowledge about my own culture.”

CREATIVITY AT AN ALL TIME HIGH Elaf Elsheikh’s short media animation film, Recycled, was recently accepted into VCAA Top Screens as part of the 2021 VCAA Top Designs: an annual exhibition at Melbourne Museum. In the words of Elaf’s Media teacher, Toly Sawenko, Recycled is a “poignant, heartfelt short film” that follows a boy’s coming of age story as he realises his impact on the environment. Elaf drew inspiration for Recycled from the complexities of global warming and more specifically, deforestation. “I felt climate change has been readily discussed and more people are [looking] to reduce their carbon footprint but fail to recognise their contribution to the cutting down of thousands of trees each second,” Elaf said. A gifted artist passionate about her craft, Elaf’s artwork graced the cover of the 2019 Southern Cross Grammar Yearbook. She was also recipient of the 2018 Media Subject Award, was the Senior School Arts Captain in 2018 and won the 2017 Science Talent Search Photography competition. She was also the top SCG Media student, scoring an outstanding Study Score of 43 in her VCE exam. “I find that the Arts really allows people to explore their style in a really interesting way,” Elaf said.

“I feel that the open-ended nature of both media and the Arts is quite inspiring especially [in] the way it prompts you to look at objects and [your] surroundings in a different perspective.”

I plan for it? – Yes. Can I adapt my idea to the circumstances? – Yes. “By reminding ourselves of these selfevident truths, the chance to aspire for greatness was still within reach.

Elaf is visionary and knows exactly what is required to bring her artistic visions to life.” Speaking about Elaf’s achievement, Head of Creative Arts, Cynthia Drossinis said, “Elaf has been a student of mine for the past three years. As soon as I saw her work in Year 10 Art, I knew she was capable of achieving an outstanding result. “Not only does she have natural artistic ability, but she is also an exceptionally hard worker. Elaf is visionary and knows exactly what is required to bring her artistic visions to life.” Elaf’s Media teacher, Toly Sawenko said, “Media crosses the bounds of forms in an ever more diverse and complex society. [2020] understandably brought about more challenges than a media student could see, however, the fundamentals were still true. Can I make a film? – Yes. Can

I would like to congratulate Elaf and all her previous SCG staff who gave her the belief and the drive that she was indeed capable of true excellence.” Elaf’s goal is to pursue her Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design at RMIT and a career in Interior Design. “I always had an interest in the Arts and I am glad to have had the teachers to encourage me, which ultimately led to my passion for it.” Recycled will showcase in the 2021 Top Designs exhibition at Melbourne Museum later this year.

YEAR 11 VCE SUCCESS Our 2020 Year 11 VCE students, the Class of 2021, exemplified excellence in their VCE exams. Students met the challenge of completing VCE with skill, composure and maturity. We are proud of their achievement and wish them, and their peers, well for the year ahead.

SAMY ASSAFIRI Samy Assafiri achieved a Study Score of 46 in Legal Studies: the highest Study Score in Year 11 and the second highest SCG Study Score in the 2020 VCE exams. Samy’s interest in how the Australian legal and parliamentary systems work together to ensure justice, and his goal to pursue politics in the future, drew him to studying Legal Studies. However, after starting studying the subject, he realised that his interests extended beyond the overall structure of the legal system and into law reform. His teacher, Jacqui Filonenko, nurtured his interests and passion for Legal Studies by providing him with clear feedback, resources and many practise questions and SACs to complete as he progressed through each study topic. “My teacher throughout all units 1-4 of Legal Studies Ms. Filonenko, nurtured my interests in it by always providing me with the necessary resources to progress my knowledge.

I was provided with many practice questions and SAC’s to complete as I progressed through each topic that would be regularly marked for feedback," Samy said. "It was only though the many very specific questions that I would ask Ms. Filonenko that I was truly able to progress my knowledge. She assisted me in making many links between legal content and recent examples that provided me with the ability to extend my responses in my SACs and the final exam." Doing well in his Legal Studies exam has given Samy greater confidence as he works towards completing his remaining VCE subjects in 2021. Samy plans on studying a Bachelor of Law and Commerce as the course strikes a perfect balance between his interests in finance and in the

justice system, and “work together to complement each other.” Samy’s advice to students studying Legal Studies or planning to study the subject is to “remain consistent.” “Due to the content heavy nature of the subject, many students will often be overwhelmed by the amount of content that has built up for them to learn and revise right before a SAC or the final exam. To combat this struggle, I would advise answering just a few practice questions and taking notes immediately after each lesson, providing you with a solid foundation to revise when necessary.”

JOANNE VUU Joanne's aptitude for Business Management saw her achieve a Study Score of 44: the second-highest in Year 11. Joanne was inspired by her parents' entrepreneurship to study Business Management. “Both of my parents work in business, so I was initially interested in the subject when it was offered,” Joanne said. Joanne’s course work saw her learn about the various aspects of a business and how they function, together, to make a business successful for its customers and for those that manage it. Preparing for her first VCE exam in 2020 was a challenge as a result of remote learning, and having to prioritise and balance the exam with her Year 11 exams.

“My VCE exam fell on the same week as my Year 11 exams, so it was important for me to both prioritise my preparation and find a balance between all my exams. I prepared for my exam weeks in advance, having completed nine practice exams leading up to the exam,” she said. Joanne hasn’t decided on a future career path yet but is planning to study Biomedicine. She also aspires to follow in her parents’ footsteps and open a business of her own in the future, saying, “Like my parents, I would like to open a business of my own in the future, as it allows me to work on my own agenda and not anyone’s else’s.

As I have acquired the basic, yet fundamental knowledge in starting, operating and controlling a business, I think the knowledge I gained from the subject will aid me in opening a business in the future.” Joanne’s advice for students considering studying Business Management is to make use of the resources available to them. “Although [Business Management] is heavy in content, there is a fair amount of common sense and critical thinking, so it is fairly easy to grasp. Ideally, if you have a good understanding and memory of the aspects taught in the business study design, this will greatly benefit you in your SACs and exam."

JAMES KOJDOVSKI Applied Computing (Data Analytics) was a highlight in 2020 with students achieving a median Study Score of 38. James Kojdovski ranked first in the subject with a Study Score of 40. James’ life-long interest in working with technology and exploring its endless possibilities drew him to study Applied Computing as he prepares for his future. “I have always liked working with technology, and have a passion for it,” James said. “Technology is growing at a rapid rate, and it is only going to become more prominent within our everyday lives, so it was beneficial for me to prepare myself for the future.” VCE Applied Computing facilitates student design-led learning and builds students’ critical and creative thinking capabilities, and their Information and Communications Technology (ICT) skills as they formulate projects and work with data to create digital solutions for real-world problems. A major feature of the Applied Computing (Data Analytics) unit is a semester long School-AssessedTask (SAT) divided into two parts, which sees students propose a research question, collect and analyse data, and develop and evaluate infographics or dynamic data visualisations. “I enjoyed this specific assessment as I was given the creative freedom to choose the topic,” James said. “I was required to create a research question of my choice and present a report with all my findings, along with two infographics. I then collected over 100 pieces of primary data, comparing this with secondary data found online, and created a range of graphs to support my research question.”

With Applied Computing providing pathways to further studies in areas such as computer science, and to careers in digital technologies such as web design and business analysis, James plans on working with technology in his future career. “My experience with the subject has been very resourceful as I am able to take away extensive knowledge and skills to apply to future career paths. I would love to pursue a career within either Software Engineering or Sports Science, which are both industries heavily reliant on technology.” James’ advice for students considering studying Applied Computing is to have an interest in technology: “You will enjoy undertaking the subject much more and it will motivate you to want to strive and do well.”

So what is the recipe for success? Is it a secret recipe that has been passed down through the generations? Or is it a constantly changing blend of ingredients that we acquire as we become older and wiser? Why not use the best of both worlds? Taking elements of what has been proven in the past but also being open to new methods grounded in research and evidence gives us all the best possible chance to fulfil our potential. We are looking forward to an exciting new year, with fresh opportunities for students to determine their own goals, and for us as educators to provide the framework of learning support and care to enable academic success.

We will use this data to plan programs, see trigger points (both positive and negative) and have more meaningful conversations with them. Southern Cross Grammar is one of the first schools in Victoria to introduce Skodel, following the success of this application in the UK, US and New Zealand. Skodel was developed using research and input from leading psychologists such as Andrew Fuller.

Wellbeing and learning are by no means separate entities, but a combination of environmental and personal conditions that allow each student to flourish. Every student, regardless of their individual strengths and capabilities, needs to be learning in the "zone" that recognises what they have already mastered, but provides sufficient challenge for them to develop and advance in their knowledge and skill. With the introduction of Learning Mentors, each student's progress will be monitored regularly and strategies put in place to bring out the best in each of them. Another important ingredient in this recipe for success, will be the layers that create an environment whereby students’ general wellbeing is optimum. CLASS OF 2033 LOOK TOWARDS BRIGHT FUTURE AT SCG

We are delighted to welcome the new generation of future Southern Cross Grammar graduates, the Class of 2033, to our school community. The Class of 2033 have begun their schooling journey at Southern Cross Grammar with joy and great enthusiasm, and in Week 2 spent some time with Mr Dodd during one of their visits to the Middle School building and VCE Centre. During their visit, students learnt about Mr Dodd's passion for education, his love for photography and literature, and his visit to NASA as part of his National Excellence in Teaching Award in 2007. While the Class of 2033's introduction to Southern Cross Grammar took place in 2020 during a year of social distancing, remote learning and restrictions, we were delighted to welcome them to our campus in small groups in Term 4 for their Orientation Program. 27 January 2021 was a triumph for our school community and students as we welcomed the Class of 2033 as a full cohort to our campus for their final day of Orientation where they took part in activities with their teachers, Mrs Suzan Kibar and Mrs Cindy Thilmenos. To welcome them, our 2020

Foundation students, the Class of 2032, made a brief welcome video with tips on how to prepare for their first year of school on our future parents' Schoolbox portal: The Lounge. In their short time on campus, our youngest students have been immersing themselves in our school community, forming friendships with one another as well as older students in the Primary Years, and learning how to learn. As a school committed to personalisation, our Foundation Program places great emphasis on gaining a clear picture of each child, and foundational numeracy and literacy skills -all hallmarks of success as they progress through SCG and the many pathways towards their future careers. "Foundation students have been working hard at school, learning daily routines, focusing on their literacy skills such as recognising their letters and listening to the sounds they hear in words while reading, and [learning about] patterns and shapes

in numeracy." Suzan Kibar and Cindy Thilmenos said. During their visit to Mr Dodd's office students were keen to borrow his Kalediscope, which now holds a prided place in their classroom. "Students thrive in an environment where they can make genuine connections with the adults responsible for their care," Mr Dodd said. "It was a joy to spend time with our newest Southern Cross Grammar students as we begin their time at SCG." As a modern school formed in the 21st century, a hallmark of Southern Cross Grammar is the way we combine traditional teaching practice with modern facilities to maximise our students' learning. The recent upgrades to our campus over the 2020 summer break has added capacity to students' learning as we prepare them for bright futures. Science and STEM is an integral part of learning at Southern Cross Grammar with a Select Entry Program offered to Years 7 and 8 students. Over the holiday break, the two laboratories in the Middle School Building were expanded and updated to become start-of-the art spaces fit for Senior Biology and Senior Chemistry, and the classroom upstairs was transformed into a permanent Middle Years STEM Room. With upgraded audio-visual and multimedia resources, interactive projectors for staff and students to collaborate and save their work, and flexible furniture to cater to dynamic working and learning environments, students and staff have responded positively to the upgrades. "The recent upgrades to the Science and STEM learning spaces have increased our capacity to cater to students' passion for STEM and provided teachers and students with modern facilities to foster high performing learning environments," Rajnesh Ram, the Head of Science and STEM said. "The fitting of cutting edge technologies and the dynamic nature of the learning spaces have also enhanced the quality of our pedagogical process. The new spaces are productive with students and staff collaborating, discussing STEM concepts and completing science experiments. The Science and STEM team are excited to continue building the momentum in 2021 and beyond." Flexible learning and teaching environments, and technology for learning extends beyond the updated STEM rooms; they feature throughout the upgrades around our campus including the updated Creative Arts spaces and in the new flexible tutorial learning space in the VCE Building. With interactive boards and an expansion of the classrooms the Creative Arts spaces are bursting with light and colour and have expanded students' ability to deepen their art practice and use the rooms during break times. CLASS OF 2026 READY TO LAUNCH The Class of 2026 are launching into the first year of their secondary adventures. With a successful orientation, both new and established SCG students are ready to start Year 7.

The Class of 2026 marked the final days of their primary years with a trip to Luna Park in St. Kilda. Year 7 represents a significant milestone for SCG families and in preparation of the Year 7 program, our 2020 Year 6 students, the Class of 2026, participated in a comprehensive Transition Program. Beginning with an online Information Evening, students, parents, and key staff connected via Webex where they learned some of the details pertaining to the orientation. New students were then invited onto our school site for two Step Up days, met their peers in person for the first time, and together, participated in activities and programs including timetabled classes, team challenges and problem solving competitions. Information and updates were also available for our families via the new Lounge feature, available via Schoolbox. Throughout the transition program, students connected in new ways as they familiarised themselves with the timetable and the idea of moving around the school to their various classes. Journeying through Year 6 in 2020 was a year of great success and triumph. Even with ongoing challenges and adversity, the Class of 2026 rallied

The Class of 2026 maintained their level of fun and enjoyment with one another throughout the year, with a tangible culture of care and compassion no matter whether learning occurred at school or at home. Their friendships

Success in 2020 extended beyond the classroom for the Class of 2026, with students participating in community projects, achieving sporting success at both state and national levels, and showcasing their many musical talents. Student passion assisted in not only getting the students through the 2020 school year, but allowed them to thrive and grow as learners, people and citizens. With such a momentous end to their primary years, We are more than confident that our 2021 Year 7 students will thrive in their first year of secondary schooling.

The popularity of Southern Cross Grammar’s new Select Entry Music and STEM Program speaks to the school’s commitment to fostering students’ passion to aim high and reach new heights. 2021 begins an exciting chapter for Southern Cross Grammar with the commencement of our Select Entry music and STEM Program. With over 50 students applying and auditioning for the Program in Term 4, the application process showcased students’ talents and capabilities in Music and STEM, and their commitment to strengthening their skills in their chosen field. As a modern school committed to providing pathways to excellence by adopting a personal approach to recognise and develop our students’ personal strengths, the Select Entry Program aims to foster students’ high performance in Music and STEM, surrounded by like-minded peers and teachers who are experts in their field. As part of their audition into the Select Entry Music Program, students

completed an online application and auditioned before esteemed staff with music backgrounds including our Head of Music, Dean of Wellbeing and Pedagogy, and Human Resources Manager who previously led Victoria University’s Music Department. “It was fantastic to receive a number of applications for the Select Entry Music program,” Robert Graham, Head of Music, said. “There were some outstanding performances on a range of instruments such as the piano, violin and GuZheng.” Successful music students will have opportunities to expand their musical knowledge, perform regularly to a diverse range of audiences, and gain exposure to the wider music industry as they attend concerts and workshops presented by industry professionals.
