HALLOWEEN IN THE NORTH GEORGIA MOUNTAINS Fall color usually peaks in Blue Ridge and Ellijay during the last two weeks of October, which puts Halloween right in the middle of the prettiest stretch of the season. The orchards are in full harvest, the evenings turn cool enough for a fire, and every weekend between now and the 31st gives you a reason to head north. Here is how to spend October in Georgia’s mountain corner. Apple Weekends in Ellijay The annual Georgia Apple Festival fills the Ellijay Lions Club Fairgrounds on October 10 and 11 and again on October 17 and 18. More than 250 vendors set up across the fairgrounds with handcrafts, fair food, live music, and enough apple baked goods to carry you through winter. Go hungry, and go early, because the parking lots fill quickly. Halloween Night in Blue Ridge The Trick or Treat Train is the evening that sells out first. On October 31 it departs the depot at 5 PM for the 26-mile round trip along the Toccoa River to McCaysville and back, with the crew in costume and the kids in theirs. Watching the river go dark from an open railcar, with the mountains silhouetted behind it, is a Halloween your family will talk about longer than any candy haul. Back in town, the Halloween Safe Zone brings trick-or-treating to downtown Blue Ridge from 5 to 6 PM, with shops handing out candy right off the sidewalk. It is the easy version of Halloween: well-lit, walkable, and close to dinner. 4 THE COMFORT COLLECTIVE
Worth the Drive Morganton’s Project Chimps sanctuary hosts its annual Chimp or Treat, where the resident chimps get their own pumpkin treats and visitors get an up-close look at the sanctuary’s work. Blairsville rounds out the map with its Hometown Halloween and the family Boo Bash downtown. End It at the Cabin However you build the weekend, the best part of October in the mountains is the part nobody schedules. A porch with a blanket after dark. Cider on the stove. The fire pit crackling while the last of the color falls across the ridge outside. Pick your weekend, book the cabin, and let the mountains handle the atmosphere.
