NOVEMBER IN THE MOUNTAINS November is the month the mountains really show off. The last of the fall color settles, the orchards pour their final cider, and the towns string their lights for the long season ahead. Creekside Haven sits twenty-two minutes from the middle of it all, close enough for every lighting, parade, and train ride on the list. Thanksgiving weekend in Blue Ridge. The season switches on Friday, November 27, with Light Up Blue Ridge. Downtown fills with free activities and live entertainment through the day, then the parade steps off at 5:30 PM and the tree lighting carries the evening. Shops throughout downtown mark the day as Blue Friday, the mountains’ own version of the year’s biggest shopping day.
The lights shows. The E.L.F. Holiday Lights Show, benefiting the Humane Society of Blue Ridge, opens Thanksgiving Day, November 26, and runs nightly through January 3. In Ellijay, the Merry Mountain Town Festival and Parade brings downtown to life Saturday, November 28, starting at noon, and the Holiday Lights of Ellijay have filled the Lions Club grounds with more than a hundred displays in seasons past.
The Holiday Express. The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway starts its Holiday Express the same weekend, a one-hour ride with holiday music, a reading of The Night Before Christmas, hot chocolate, and a chance to see Santa. Children ride home with a jingle bell and a candy cane. The Express runs select dates November 27 through December 24, and the popular dates sell out first, so book early.
A slower pace before the rush. Early November still holds the quiet version of the mountains. The trails empty out after peak foliage, the Toccoa runs cold and clear, and Fightingtown Creek moves past the Creekside Haven deck at the unhurried pace that makes November the locals’ favorite month.
