Memorial Day isn’t a commercial holiday in the mountains. It’s a front-yard tradition. Flags are raised before sunrise, parades gather small crowds on Main Street, and families drive out to cemeteries with folding chairs and fresh flowers. The weekend is remembered here the way it’s meant to be remembered.

A Memorial Day Ceremony
Appalachian Veterans Memorial Park, Fannin County | Monday, May 25
The North Georgia Honor Guard will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at Fannin County’s Veterans Memorial Park. The ceremony includes a rifle salute, the posting of the colors, the placing of wreaths, and a rendition of the National Anthem performed by a local artist. Open to the public.
