The night before the St. Jude Memphis Marathon, on Friday, Dec. 6, more than 120 members of the Southern College of Optometry’s team stopped by the campus gymnasium to fill their plates with carbohydrate-rich pasta and fill their spirits with community pride. The spread, provided by Chef Wanda Motley of Willevas Catering, featured spaghetti and meatballs, broccoli fettuccine alfredo, chicken, green beans, salad and garlic bread. “We have a pasta dinner just so everybody can get together and get pumped about the race,” said Melissa Hansbro, creative services coordinator at Southern College of Optometry, whose students this year represent 35 U.S. states plus Canada.

Calkins: The St. Jude Memphis Marathon isn’t just a race. It’s a lesson for us all.

Community service is an integral part of student life at SCO, whose outreach programs each year bring millions of dollars in free and affordable eye care to about 20,000 Memphis area residents. In 2019, SCO launched its own St. Jude Memphis Marathon team, and each year since the college has participated.
