YMCA George Williams College offers a new Social Pedagogy course. Developed with schools, this course will give professionals working with young people a greater insight, new ideas and practical strategies for working creatively with challenging and difficult behaviour, and in caring for young people experiencing difficulties in their lives. Working in a holistic manner, this person centred relational approach, develops the young person’s self awareness, self efficacy, resilience and autonomy enabling you to work together to support them to overcome their barriers to engagement and learning.

Environmental and Sustainable Education Today, the responsibilities placed on UK schools and colleges are not limited to the classroom. Modern curriculums must offer students the opportunity to challenge and prove themselves academically and physically.

The value delivered through sports and extra-curricular activities are well proven, but here at UWC Atlantic College, we offer different ways to develop outside of the classroom. Each year around 350 international students, who are typically aged between 16 -19 and represent over 90 different nationalities (including students from the UK), arrive at our campus on

the South Wales coastline to study the Atlantic Diploma. This cocurricular programme sees students split their time equally between their International Baccalaureate studies and a range of service led activities. The programme is also closely aligned to the UWC mission statement: “UWC makes education a force to unite peoples, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future”. The Environmental Faculty takes a challenging and interactive approach to learning that inspires and equips students to work towards a more sustainable future. Learning in the Faculty revolves around increasing students’ understanding of environmental issues, enhancing a deep appreciation of interconnectedness and how we live in relationship to the natural world, developing a vision of how we can adopt alternative approaches to living, and devising strategies to overcome the environmental problems facing the world today and the challenges endangering our future generations in the coming decades.

Students help cultivate a large organic kitchen garden and orchard on campus and engage with many sustainability projects including alternative technology initiatives, beekeeping, chicken rearing, environmental campaigning, recycling, species-monitoring. We are currently developing two main projects: our forest school programme where students will teach local primary school students about environmental sustainability; our school farm where this spring students will be involved in lambing. The students also organise and lead an annual Sustainability Conference.
