SUNDAY, JULY 12 – FRIDAY, JULY 17, 2026
THE DARLA MOORE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS • UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, COLUMBIA
“The South Carolina Bankers School represents the very best in our industry—where knowledge, leadership, and innovation come together to strengthen the future of banking. The quality of the curriculum is exceptional, blending practical application with strategic insight that truly prepares bankers for today’s evolving financial landscape. Equally meaningful are the lifelong relationships built among classmates and faculty—connections that foster shared success long after graduation. Being hosted at one of the nation’s premier business schools, the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina, elevates the experience even further, providing an inspiring environment for growth and professional excellence. Serving on the South Carolina Bankers School Board of Directors is both an honor and a responsibility I deeply value—an opportunity to help guide and invest in the next generation of banking leaders.

It is common for every generation to have concerns about the next generation that follows them. This is true in both a personal and business context. Over the last year, I have written a lot about our 125 year history and the generation of bankers that preceded us. I want to dedicate this edition of The Palmetto Banker to the future generation of South Carolina banking leaders by highlighting the activities and initiatives of our Emerging Leaders Division.
In 1955 our Association formed the Young Bankers Division to help prepare the next generation of bankers for leadership positions. This division has changed, evolved, and gotten better over these 70 years. They do an outstanding job of supporting and enhancing every single initiative of the South Carolina Bankers Association.
The following articles highlight some of their many activities:
• Our Scholarship Golf Tournament helps raise funds so that we can award college scholarships to children of member bank employees. Last year we awarded $100,000 and will do the same this year.
• Our Sporting Clays BankPAC Tournament has been successful since its inaugural event in 2019, and this year raised over $30,000 to help support good candidates running for state office.
• Financial Literacy, a hallmark initiative since day one, has helped improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of South Carolinians.
• This year, Chair Margi Flemming introduced “The Morning Vault” creating an opportunity to learn from accomplished leaders. We leaned into technology and put these segments on our first podcast.

Fred L. Green III, President & CEO
South Carolina Bankers Association
• Each year during the Legislative session, our Emerging Leaders attend the “South Carolina Bankers Association Day” at the State House to meet with Leadership in the House and Senate.
Technology will remain a powerful tool, but it will never replace human judgement. Artificial intelligence, data analytics, and automation can enhance efficiency, but it is leadership that determines how these tools are used. Our Emerging Leaders better understand technology because they grew up with it. They can take advantage of it while maintaining the personal touch with customers and associates that is so important.
As our industry becomes more complicated and technology continues to reshape how work is done, future leaders must be adaptable and curious. Change is constant. The leaders who will thrive will be lifelong learners that are open to new ideas, willing to challenge old processes, and capable of guiding their bank through uncertainty with confidence.
Leaders also need a leader, and I am so proud of our team member, Carolyn Bradley, who works very closely with our Emerging Leaders and helps facilitate all of the events and initiatives they are involved in. Their success is a direct reflection of her enthusiasm and engagement.
In closing, older bankers of my generations should be very comforted that the next generation of bankers will accept the challenge and will become better bank leaders than we are. Our future is in good hands.

Rob Nichols, President and CEO American Bankers Association nichols@aba.com
It’s time to work together to
Are you an early bird or a night owl? Do you prefer the pool or the beach? Coffee or tea?
As ABA’s award-winning consumer education campaign, #BanksNeverAskThat points out, banks would never ask a customer these questions. Just like banks would never ask for a PIN, account number or other personal identifying information in an unsolicited call or message.
What banks are asking for, however, is for the government to take a more comprehensive approach to fighting fraud and scams. With fraud losses among Americans estimated to be anywhere from $12 billion to $160 billion, and with scam tactics evolving in sophistication each day thanks to the evolution of AI and other technologies, it will take a coordinated effort to combating this dangerous threat.
Over a year ago, I called on Congress and the administration to establish an Office of Scam and Fraud Prevention—within the executive office of the president—to coordinate interagency efforts, streamline consumer reporting processes and develop a national scam and fraud prevention strategy that would involve both the public and private sectors.
But we also need other industries—especially the telecom sector—to step up and do their part. Scammers use call spoofing, impersonation text messages and fake social media accounts to conduct a staggering number of fraudulent exchanges, and regulations around telecom providers are lacking. ABA has advocated for stronger laws to prevent illegal spoofing and has also called for enhanced standards for voice service providers to help consumers identify potentially fraudulent calls, as well as for the establishment of a customer-reported scam text message database that would enable businesses to monitor fraudulent texts being sent on their behalf.
As we advocate for more comprehensive rules for telecoms and other entities, banks continue to do their part to protect their customers from the financial and psychological harm caused by fraud. ABA has played a leadership role in recent years to arm bankers with the tools and resources they need to help protect their customers.
We’ve established the ABA Fraud Contact Directory, which enables banks to more quickly resolve check fraud claims for their customers and find contacts at other banks to stop fraudulently sent funds.
Earlier this year, we rolled out exclusive ABA member access to check payee verification through the Treasury Check Verification System, a tool that has already been used to validate over half a billion dollars’ worth of checks.
And this October, ABA brought back our award-winning consumer education campaigns, #BanksNeverAskThat and #PracticeSafeChecks, both of which are intended to boost consumer awareness around popular fraud and scam tactics. These campaigns have been updated with new content that banks can access and share for free.

I hope you’ll join the thousands of banks across America who have already signed up to participate in this campaign. Your engagement will help us spread this valuable knowledge far and wide and help protect millions of Americans’ livelihoods from fraudsters.
The fraud threat is ever evolving, but consumers can count on America’s banks to have their back.

The Emerging Leaders Division extends heartfelt gratitude to all participants and supporters of the annual BankPAC Sporting Clays Tournament Fundraiser, held on November 19 at the Palmetto Shooting Complex in Edgefield, South Carolina. Event Chair, Angela Klosterman of First Citizens Bank in Columbia, expressed her delight at the overwhelming turnout, noting that the event attracted over 100 shooters, along with a dedicated group of sponsors and volunteers. This participation underscores the strong commitment of the community to supporting vital political action initiatives.
The primary objective of the tournament is to raise essential funds for the SCBA STATE BankPAC. The PAC plays a crucial role in providing campaign support to state legislators and constitutional officers who support pro-banking and pro-business legislation.
Individuals who share an interest in the future of the banking industry and wish to preserve the important role of banks in our economy and our communities should contribute annually to one of the SCBA PACs. Please visit our website to learn more, www.scbankers.org, and mark your calendars for next year’s event scheduled for November 18 at the Palmetto Shooting Complex.

For over 40 years, Central South Carolina Habitat for Humanity has partnered with banks in Richland, Lexington, and Fairfield counties to help people achieve the American Dream of homeownership. Our approach is rooted in responsibility: homeowners invest 300 hours of sweat equity, complete financial education and pay an affordable mortgage—never more than 30% of their income. This model builds stability through hard work and self-sufficiency. And the results are clear. 111 homeowners have fully paid off their mortgages and 93% of current loans are current or prepaid. Affordable housing strengthens families, builds taxpayers and fuels local economic growth.

"Working with PRI was fantastic - their communication was excellent. Waiting for feedback from a third party can be frustrating, especially when expectations aren't clearly communicated That's not how PRI worked: they were very clear and concise on what they needed from us in order to complete a successful project and kept us up to date throughout. This made my life a lot easier!
During our brand project with PRI, we gained knowledge that we didn't have before we started, and I don't know if we would have gotten that knowledge anywhere else. No one else has ever offered us that. PRI opened our eyes to incentives we didn't know existed and helped improve the profitability of our debit card program!"

Anderson Brothers Bank officially opened the doors to its newest branch in Carolina Forest on September 22, marking a major milestone in the bank’s continued growth throughout South Carolina. Located at 91 McLeod Boulevard near International Drive, the new branch is now open and ready to serve customers with a convenient location and a community-focused atmosphere.
The Carolina Forest branch is the bank’s 26th location across the Pee Dee and Coastal regions, underscoring Anderson Brothers Bank’s long-standing commitment to expanding access to banking services.

Coastal States Bank marked a significant milestone Jan. 7, 2026, ringing the Opening Bell at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in celebration of the initial public offering (IPO) and official listing of its holding company, CoastalSouth Bancshares, Inc. (NYSE: COSO). The opening bell was rung by the company’s Chairman Jim MacLeod and President and Chief Executive Officer Stephen R. Stone, who were joined on the podium by members of the bank’s board of directors and senior leadership team. Officials said the Opening Bell ceremony reflects CSB’s transition to operating as part of a publicly traded organization, following the completion of CoastalSouth’s IPO in July of 2025.
“This represents an important chapter in our story,” said Stone. “Our IPO and listing on the NYSE have given us the resources we need to continue to build on our strong foundation, expand our impact in our communities, and serve our clients with the same relationship-driven approach that has defined who we are since our inception in 2004.”
First Citizens Bank donated $25,000 to support South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities. South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (SCICU) announced the investment from First Citizens Bank in support of the Student Lifeline Grants Program. This renewed commitment significantly expands the program’s ability to provide emergency financial assistance to students attending South Carolina’s private colleges and universities. Student Lifeline Grants help bridge short-term financial gaps that could otherwise force students to pause or discontinue their education. These funds support needs such as unexpected medical bills, transportation challenges, food insecurity, and other urgent personal or academic expenses. By covering these essential expenses, the grants offer students a lifeline in their times of greatest need.
“We are deeply grateful to First Citizens for their generous investment in South Carolina’s independent colleges and universities. This gift not only strengthens our mission but also affirms the vital role private higher education plays in shaping the future of our state. Their commitment to student success and community impact is truly inspiring,” said SCICU President Robert Lloyd.

United Community was the 2025 recipient of The American Bankers Association Foundation Community Commitment Award for Volunteerism. United Community’s volunteer-driven Financial Literacy Month initiative mobilized nearly 2,000 employees across five states to deliver financial education to more than 31,000 students and adults. Supported by the Together for Good Council and the United Community Foundation, the program combines education, charitable giving, and hands-on service to strengthen financial health and community resilience.
United Community announced a three-year corporate sponsorship with Junior Achievement (JA) BizTown Mobile® of South Carolina. This hands-on program brings a mini city to South Carolina schools, where students get to run businesses, earn “paychecks” and make real-world money decisions. As the official bank sponsor, United Community is proud to help thousands of students learn how to earn, save and spend wisely – all while having fun.
Throughout the 2025–2026 school year, JA BizTown Mobile is expected to serve 4,000 to 5,000 students, with participation projected to grow each year as the program reaches more schools. The program serves students across Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, Myrtle Beach, Greenwood and Beaufort, increasing access to hands-on financial education in communities throughout South Carolina.
“At United Community, we believe financial confidence starts early,” said Julie Von Bokern, senior vice president and head of marketing and communications at United Community. “JA BizTown lets students practice real-life money decisions, such as earning, saving and working together, so financial decisions feel familiar, not intimidating. Supporting programs like this helps us invest in future leaders and build stronger communities.”

United Community South Carolina and Coastal Georgia State President Dixon Woodward added, “Helping young people build confidence with money is something we care deeply about at United Community. JA BizTown Mobile gives students real-life practice with money choices, helping them feel prepared and empowered as they grow.”
