ARCHITECTURE
On the Curve The architects behind this summer’s Serpentine Pavilion discuss the surprising sensuality of bricks
Above: Design render of the “crinkle-crankle” wall by Lanza Atelier, echoing the nearby Serpentine Gallery South Opposite: Isabel Abascal and her partner, Alessandro Arienzo, who founded Lanza Atelier in 2015
This summer, a “crinkle-crankle” wall will pop up in London’s Hyde Park, its snaking line softly organic, despite being built from rational, rectangular bricks. Referencing an 18th-century British style with ancient Egyptian origins, it forms part of the 25th annual Serpentine Pavilion, one of architecture’s most prestigious commissions, which this year showcases the vision of Mexico City-based team Lanza Atelier. “Our work finds beauty in how things are used, constructed and experienced,” says Isabel Abascal, who founded the studio in 2015 with her partner, Alessandro Arienzo. “The Serpentine wall carries a lot of sensuality, but it uses less material than a straight wall. So, in this case, beauty lies in the refined cleverness of the structure.” Brick walls are rarely considered sensual. Conceptually, they’re symbolic of border divisions, abrupt endings and creative blocks. Yet Lanza Atelier’s Pavilion design is consciously permeable: soon to be animated 6
by the colors of nature, the movement of people, and the dappled light that will stream through vertical strips of space between each stacked column. “It reveals the power of walls not to divide, but to bring us together,” says Arienzo. This same vitality is evident in the studio’s Casa Jajalpa (2019), a family home in a pine forest near Mexico City, constructed from tactile bricks that change color with the seasons. Rather than being monolithic, the micro-modularity of this material adapts to nature through curved and lattice forms—a contemporary house, yet embedded in its environment like the millennia-old brick structures of Mesopotamian civilizations. Brick is enjoying a resurgence in residential architecture, thanks to its green credentials as much as its historical reference points. Certainly, Lanza Atelier’s adaptive designs and context-responsive materials bring a sense of timelessness, drawing lines

between past, present and future. For their pavilion, the studio chose a familiar red brick—sourced from Wienerberger’s 100-yearold factory in the Surrey village of Ewhurst —echoing both the English garden tradition and the nearby Grade II-listed Serpentine South Gallery, originally a 1930s tea house. Their Casa Caracol (2024) in Cancun, meanwhile, was built from a concrete aggregate, with spiraling sea-snail shells from the local beach folded into the surfaces of the house. This functional poetry aims to blend craft and innovation in the face of rapid, homogenizing urbanization. “In the midst of a planetary climate crisis, we trust raw local materials to create a more sustainable balance with the high-tech,” says Abascal, before adding: “Both are important.”
For the duo, this is a lived understanding: the couple reside in a renovated adobe ruin in Mexico City with thick earth walls that are thermally insulating and acoustically softening, but they actively participate in the beautiful friction of the metropolis. Similarly, their Serpentine Pavilion will offer visitors the chance to rediscover a sense of balance: a space to readjust perceptions, meditate on time and absorb the sculptural energy of place. As Arienzo says: “The ability to perceive—and marvel at—beauty is, for us, even more relevant than beauty itself.” Serpentine Pavilion 2026 by Lanza Atelier is open June 6-October 25, 2026. Home Ground Natural materials sit at the core of Coda, an architectural new-build in the rolling hinterlands of Byron Bay, Australia, just inland from the coast. Elevated above—and anchored into—the area’s ancient basalt rock, the sculptural design is the work of fourth-generation architect Llewela Griffiths. The main structure combines concrete, glass and timber with subtle brickwork, while the interiors feature walnut joinery and polished floors. The design also aims at ultrasustainability, with thermally broken double glazing, commercialgrade stormwater infrastructure and full-house UV filtration to secure its “forever home” status. And at the very heart of the house: an open-plan living space where sliding glass walls disappear to reveal terraces, a reflection pond and a horizon-edge pool that mirrors the lavender sky.

Bags of Appeal From record-breaking Birkins to playful Chanel collectibles, handbags are hot property at auction
In July 2025, a slightly battered black leather bag—complete with its former owner’s nail clippers hanging from the strap—sold at Sotheby’s Paris for $10.1m. The bag was the original Hermès Birkin, the prototype of the now iconic style, crafted for actress Jane Birkin in 1984 after a chance encounter with then Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight. Bidding opened at €1m ($1.15m) and nine collectors fought over it in a 10-minute battle that proved, without a doubt, that the handbag market is one to be taken seriously. “The first auctions with handbags started around 2008 to 2010, and since
then the market has expanded significantly,” says Gabrielle Hollenbeck, an associate specialist in handbags at Sotheby’s. “With social media, it has really grown.” Today, around 90% of Sotheby’s handbag sales are Hermès, with styles such as the Birkin and the Kelly proving most popular. Current tastes lean towards smaller models, such as the Mini Kelly or the Birkin 25. Among the most coveted are the Birkin 20 bags in exotic skins and the Faubourg Birkins: exquisite miniatures of the brand’s flagship store in Paris, complete with tiny windows and awnings, which routinely fetch upward of $150,000. “They are very playful— like small pieces of art,” says Hollenbeck. “It’s definitely a special-occasion bag.” While the record set by the original Birkin may never be matched, some notable pieces have excited the market in recent years. One of the ultimate “it” bags is the Hermès Diamond Himalaya Birkin 30, which is crafted from Niloticus crocodile skin and features diamond-encrusted 18-karat whitegold hardware. In 2022, Sotheby’s sold one in a private sale for more than $450,000. Chanel also commands attention at auction, particularly the brand’s highly embellished minaudières. These whimsical designs, which take the form of anything from a Chanel No5 perfume bottle to a cupcake, can retail for up to $20,000 and tend to hold their value at auction. “They’re beautiful pieces—very rare and very collectible,” says Hollenbeck. As the market grows, the collector base is broadening. Hollenbeck has noticed growing numbers of male buyers drawn by the investment opportunity, which she compares to watches. “[Handbags] retain their value over time, and you might not be able to access many of the rarer pieces easily in store,” she explains. Younger collectors gravitate towards trendier, smaller styles, while more established buyers seek out larger sizes and exotic skins. Vintage Hermès, defined as anything pre-2000, is an underrated entry point, says Hollenbeck. “These bags have stood the test of time and they’re still beautiful luxury leather pieces.”

As investments, these aren’t accessories for everyday use. Hollenbeck’s advice is to think of them as you would a sculpture. “You really have to treat it like a piece of art,” she says. Avoid direct sunlight, which can alter the color of sensitive leathers, and maintain a stable temperature. Bags should be kept stuffed with acid-free tissue to hold their shape and stored in their dust bags when not on show. Some owners go further, housing prized pieces in glass or acrylic cases, elevated to the status of artwork.
Sotheby’s next major handbag sale is in June and will feature more than 200 lots, including some historic pieces from a significant collector. For those considering a purchase, this secondary market— including Sotheby’s Buy Now platform— offers something the boutique often cannot: choice. “There’s no guarantee you will be able to buy the bag you want in store,” says Hollenbeck, “but at auction, chances are you’re going to find something you like.” Mandi Keighran is a London-based writer and editor, specialising in design, travel and luxury

DESIGN Command the Room
As interior designers and homeowners embrace more maximalist-infused visions— rich in color, craft and detail—so the humble couch is moving into the spotlight. Informed by design heritage, yet firmly rooted in the present, statement sofas are the perfect accent for luxury living, capturing attention while still accommodating the whole family. Rather than a furnishing afterthought, the right sofa can become a core part of the interior vision. “Why settle for a boring sofa when you can have a jewel?” says Jérémy PradierJeauneau, whose Waves sofa, showcased at PAD design fair in London, emerges elegantly yet powerfully from the ground like an ancient monument. For the designer, it’s about “expressing personality”—as one might through a Chanel bag or Cartier bracelet. “You don’t compose an interior without boldness any more than you build a look without a statement piece,” he continues. “The sculptural sofa is that chic manifesto: an artwork to live with, where comfort becomes an idea. It’s the piece that makes all the difference.” Los Angeles-based Another Human designs furniture and spaces that are colorful, creative and full of personality. For a bright and airy home in Los Feliz, California, the studio made a large curved blue sofa the focus for the double-height living room. Reflecting a serpentine fireplace of similar hue, the piece snakes across the room within the open-plan space. “The sofa becomes a conversation starter,” says Leah Ring, Another Human’s designer and founder, “and the scale and bold style set the aesthetic tone for the room.” Every living space is different and every homeowner has their own needs, so modular seating—with its potential for different sizes and layouts—offers attractive flexibility. Steeped in history, statement sofas are once again making an impact in luxury homes
Opposite: A 1969 velvet Verner Panton sofa in the library of a Paris apartment designed by Uchronia Left: Another Human’s custom sofa is a colorful centerpiece in an LA living room
Uchronia features a wiggling pink modular sofa in the library—a 1969 design by Danish designer Verner Panton. Offsetting the traditional wooden paneling and decorative fireplace, the sofa becomes an artistic gesture that makes the room sing. “A bold sofa immediately sets the emotional tone of a living space,” says Uchronia founder Julien Sebban. “It transforms the room from something purely functional into a place of expression and energy.” 11
The embrace of statement sofas today has precedent in the time of designers like Panton. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the polite sofas of midcentury modernism became softer and more curvaceous, often harnessing modularity in pieces that dominated rooms. At times, the sofa became a landscape to climb on or sink into. It was this period of experimentation that gave us the sunken conversation pit of wraparound soft seating, as well as classics such as the ultra-relaxed, bed-like Ligne Roset Togo sofa (designed by Michel Ducaroy in 1973) and the expansive Dune ensemble (1969-72) by Pierre Paulin. The latter’s four geometrically designed modules combine to create a topography of soft, dune-like seating. It looks as futuristic today as it did when it debuted more than 50 years ago. Kevin Greenberg, founder of Brooklynbased interior design studio Space Exploration, gravitates to 1970s designs when he wants a sofa to steal the spotlight. “Maestros such as Mario Bellini, Tobia and Afra Scarpa, Michel Ducaroy, Mario Marenco and Arne Norell helped pioneer a golden age of low-slung, formally daring (and often modular) seating collections that are sure to enliven any room,” he says. When selecting a sofa, Greenberg recommends choosing sumptuous upholstery—particularly rich tones of velvet and suede—to “ensure your couch is as comfortable as it is commanding.” Ultimately, a statement sofa can achieve exactly what its name indicates: communicating the power of design. But it also enriches the everyday. As Julien Sebban sees it: “Living with expressive shapes, strong colors or unexpected materials stimulates creativity and joy on a daily basis.” Francesca Perry writes on design, architecture and art for the Financial Times, Wallpaper and Elle Decor

s America celebrates its milestone 250th anniversary this Boston’s wellsummer, the revolutionary spirit that has long def ined Boston revs up. The coastal New England city played an outsized heeled Beacon role in the young nation’s f ight for freedom, and today that Hill neighborhood independent streak lives on. Boston’s postcard-perfect neighborhoods may seem trapped in amber, but innovation sits at the heart thrives on centuries-old streets. Nowhere better captures this timehopping magic than Beacon Hill, one of downtown Boston’s oldest and most of history, but aff luent areas. its streets exude “It’s a museum in its own right,” says longtime resident Thomas Kershaw, owner of Beacon Hill’s historic Hampshire House and its subterranean Englishall the charm style pub, which inspired the television series “Cheers.” Kershaw also sits on of now, writes the board of Sail Boston, which has organized a harbor regatta of tall ships in July as part of the America 250 celebrations. “Walking down the street, you Andrew Sessa feel it’s 200 years ago.” At the same time, Beacon Hill is no relic of the past. Lana Barakat—whose womenswear boutique December Thieves curates a selection of bespoke makers—points to an “inf lux of innovative stores and restaurants” boosting the area’s diversity and appeal. Architect and interior designer Lisa Miao, meanwhile, who lives on one of the neighborhood’s most picturesque squares, says: “It was the original heart of the city in many ways,” and, she adds, remains “a true sweet little village unto itself.” This village-within-a-village rises between the Charles River and two adjacent green spaces: Boston Common, which is the country’s oldest public park, and the Frederick Law Olmsted-designed Public Garden, where visitors f lock to ride swan-shaped boats on the pond and see bronze sculptures inspired by classic U.S. children’s book “Make Way for Ducklings.” The Common is an ideal starting point for walking the Freedom Trail, a redbrick route connecting prominent revolutionary-era sites, and the city’s history of public and political action continues there in a recently unveiled monument, “The Embrace,” by Hank Willis Thomas. It honors Martin Luther King Jr., who led a 1965 civil rights march that concluded with a speech delivered to 20,000 at the Common’s bandstand.

Much of the Beacon Hill we see today dates from the end of the 18th century. That’s when prominent Bostonians began commissioning Federal and Greek Revival mansions west of the just-completed gold-domed State House. This uppermost crust of local society came to be known as “Boston Brahmins,” thanks to humorist Oliver Wendell Holmes, an “old money” stereotype that persists, bolstered by the area’s high property values—and the preppy appearance of its residents. While many of these aristocratic abodes remain private homes— sensitively remodeled by architects and designers for contemporary living—several live on as immersive museums. William Hickling Prescott House reveals the lives of three families of wealthy residents, while the Nichols House Museum focuses on suffragist, pacifist and noted garden designer Rose Standish Nichols. Gilded Age socialite and collector Isabella Stewart Gardner built her eponymous must-visit museum a couple of miles west, but she was a loyal parishioner at Beacon Hill’s Church of the Advent, to which she donated an intricately carved limestone altarpiece that impresses churchgoers to this day. Across the street from the State House, the neoclassical edif ice of the 220-year-old Boston Athenaeum houses some 700,000-plus literary, historical and artistic wonders, including volumes from George Washington’s personal library that f igure in its current America 250 exhibition, “Imagined Nation.” On the north slope of the hill, the Museum of African American History comprises the Abiel Smith School and African Meeting House. Both played pivotal roles in the lives of Boston’s Black communities and their f ight for freedom. “National calls to action around abolition and human rights for African Americans are embedded in our buildings,” says Noelle Trent, museum president and CEO. “Every visitor has the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of history.” “Beacon Hill is steeped in history and politics,” agrees Claire Cronin, a former U.S. ambassador to Ireland who spent 10 years in the State House as a Massachusetts state representative. While politicos can readily be found at nearby watering holes such as Emmets, Roxanne’s and the aptly named 21st Amendment, Cronin suggests the familyowned Capital Coffee House to start the day, and a pint of Guinness at The Dubliner to f inish it. Heading west, marvel at Louisburg Square’s oval of picturesque brick townhouses and browse the beautiful blooms at Rouvalis Flowers & Gardens. The nearby and impossibly narrow Acorn Street may well be the most photographed in Boston. A couple of blocks west lies Charles Street, Beacon Hill’s main thoroughfare, though you’ll f ind very few big brands here. Instead, it has “the sort of scaled-down feel that makes places feel human,” 14

BEACON HILL IS STEEPED IN HISTORY AND POLITICS
says interior designer Margaret Nubuor, a relatively recent Beacon Hill arrival. She’s enthusiastic about the new generation of aff luent, family-minded owners who have come to the neighborhood. “It’s def initely gotten younger and more varied. I see more strollers these days!” On Charles Street, the small storefronts of boutiques such as French + Italian and Dress Boston occupy rowhouses. Recent menswear arrival Keezer’s specializes in vintage high-end pieces and expert tailoring, while Beacon Hill Books & Cafe combines carefully curated volumes and a quirky aesthetic of pale-blue prints and patterns—you’ll often f ind a line out the door. The same is true of Tatte, a Parisian-meets-Levantine cafe whose pastries, tartines, shakshukas and pitas take the proverbial cake. In the evenings, even the most sophisticated don’t mind stopping for a beer and hotdog at The Sevens pub. For more formal fare, well-heeled locals love the old-world setting and Tuscan-focused dishes of long-standing trattoria Toscano. Newcomer Zurito, meanwhile, has brought Basque-style pintxos to Beacon Hill. Its star sommelier, Nader Asgari-Tari, couldn’t imagine a better spot, noting: “There’s a spark to this neighborhood that’s diff icult to replicate.” As for hotels, the 65 stylish rooms of the Michelin-approved Whitney opened in 2019, spanning a 1909 brick building and contemporary addition. The hotel sits mere yards from the Charles River and its wide esplanade of parks and pathways, plus beer gardens, boat rental and a bandshell where the Boston Pops orchestra plays a free alfresco concert every Fourth of July. And a few blocks down from the Whitney, the art-f illed 14-room Beacon Hill Hotel— which unveiled a top-to-bottom redo as recently as 2023—is currently closed for further upgrades, including a reimagined restaurant and bar. That sort of frequent reinvention is exactly what def ines Boston, and especially Beacon Hill, today. “Every year [it] seems to get better and better,” concludes December Thieves founder Barakat. “Everyone here is doing something unique and different.” 0 Andrew Sessa is a Boston-based writer and editor who contributes regularly to Architectural Digest, Robb Report and Town & Country 18

Period Drama Historic details abound in this split-level home in the heart of the Beacon Hill neighborhood, part of an elegant former carriage house that dates back to 1917. From cozy bay-window seats to arched doorways and timber beams, the home exudes warmth, with plenty of natural light and several fireplaces that come into their own as the seasons change. While strictly a condominium, the three-bedroom property has two separate entrances, four parking spaces and a private decked garden, offering all the convenience of a single family home. What’s more, its prime location in the “flat of the hill” area, a short walk from the Charles River, offers views over Boston Public Garden and proximity to some of the best dining in town.

DESIGN Dreams The multitalented Faye Toogood talks furniture, fashion and fungi with Caroline Roux
“
W
hy wouldn’t you want a bed that gives you a hug?” asks the British designer Faye Toogood. “I’m thinking about the body just as much as the craftsmanship.” Toogood has recently returned from Milan Design Week, where she launched new work with four separate heavyweight brands. Among these projects was the LieLow bed, made with Italian furniture maker Poltrona Frau. With its simple base and squishysquashy headboard to cushion the sleepiest human head, it could be a drawing in a children’s book. “It’s got the sort of rounded corners that don’t really exist in the traditional design language,” she admits. “It’s not a bed, it’s a dream bed.” And Toogood, in many ways, is not a designer, but instead as dream-focused as this newly minted work. She studied art history and went on to be an editor and stylist at The World of Interiors magazine. In 2008, she started her own furniture companywith no industrial design training but an instinctive sense of how she would like the pieces to look and feel, and turned her own name into a serious brand along the way. Several of her pieces are in permanent museum collections around the world.

Design Dreams
From furniture and fashion to wallpaper, the Toogood mark denotes a certain kind of minimalist form-making but with an extravagant twist—to wit, her most famous creation, the Roly Poly chair. With its curved cup of a seat and solid column legs, it is both formal and fabulous, selling in its millions since its launch in 2014. (Toogood later gave away its license to another Italian design brand, Driade. “It’s done very well for them,” she says.) This year she took on a new studio in London. Just south of the river, in Borough—a district now synonymous with the fancy food market—Toogood and co. occupy 100 square meters of a former Victorian school. “It’s got a wonderful courtyard and feels like a home,” she says. “I’m looking forward to hosting people.” The move signals a series of changes: she has winnowed her team down to seven from 30, closed the gender-neutral clothing line she ran with her sister Erica from 2013 to 2024, and done away with rigid roles among the remaining crew. “The fashion was pretty successful, but it was all about running a business and that ’s just not me,” she says. “Now we’re interdisciplinary—a bunch of artists, designers, philosophers—and it’s more like a family again.” She has an entire studio set up just for painting and sculpting. This spring a restaurant opened in London’s fashionable Spitalf ields where Toogood’s love of painting—and mushrooms (she owns a f ine collection of antique French plaster fungi, acquired from a friend’s father)—are on display in her design. Called The Holy Carrot, the east London eaterie is little sister to the chicer Notting Hill version. “The original restaurant is clean and serene, and I wanted something more family, more playful, more like a bistro,” says Toogood of the white-tiled room, which is enlivened by two enormous mushroom murals hanging above the bar. “I pushed them on that,” she says of its scale and content, laughing. “Mushrooms are the future. They’re going to save us.” Toogood, it turns out, is a reluctant interior designer. “It’s very limiting as a role,” she says. “I mean, I love interiors, I love spaces, but I’m best of f working with a conf ident individual who wants something different.” She has removed most past interiors projects from her website, she says. One that remains shows a collector’s home in Mayfair, London, with

deep-green stuccoed walls and burnished wooden f loors. “They gave me the keys and simply said they didn’t want it to look like anyone else’s apartment,” she says. “I don’t have a style or taste. I’m a barometer, or thermometer. I look at an interior and ask: what do you need?” Her own home is a 19th-century farmhouse in the Hampshire countryside, in the south of England. “It’s not a pretty house,” she says of the six-bedroom property, purchased in 2020. “And it had been completely John Lewis-ed,” she continues, referring to the UK’s most dependable department store. What it needed, she concluded, was a fair number of old things and some measure of chintz, sourced from classic British brand Colefax and Fowler and its French counterpart Pierre Frey. Besides the property’s restored f ireplaces, she has installed Victorian cast-iron radiators. There are design pieces by Marcel Breuer (inherited from her husband Matt Gibberd’s architect

The home is also a test bed for future designs. “At the moment I’m living with a light I’m working on— a big paper shade on iron legs,” she says. “I’m working out if the size is right, the light quality is good.” The range will launch in London in September. While the lights are self-produced, working with Italian studios has taught Toogood a thing or two. “They have extraordinary technical knowledge and industrial capability,” she says, following collaborations with Meritalia and Tacchini, as well as Poltrona Frau. “But I bring something imperfect, soft, emotional, poetic.” With Meritalia, she has created the Crease sofa, where an envelope clads the furniture like a coat. “It was about making something f lat into something 3D,” she explains. At Tacchini, her greatest pleasure lies in working with its female creative director, Giusi Tacchini. “It’s a three-year collaboration now, and lately I’ve done a new lacquer collection and got to work with incredible colors— malachite, baby blue, pink.” But it is in Japan where Toogood feels most free. For the past two years, she has travelled to work with the Nagoya-based porcelain company Noritake. Her second project with them, Kiln, was one of those launched in Milan: “I f inally got to design my own shapes,” she says of the softly sculptural pots, plates and vessels. More recently, she went to Tokyo at the invitation of highend department store Ginza Six. “Though they were a bit cross with me, because my fashion had been doing really well there before I closed it down,” she says. The retailer had invited designers including Max Lamb and Fabien Cappello to select a tree in the 500-year-old Yoshino forest and make new work that exploits the exquisite, complex grain of its famous cedars. Toogood found inspiration by writing a children’s story and painting watercolors of imaginary woodland animals. “They like me in Japan as much for my artistic qualities as my design qualities,” she says. “And, of course, imperfection there is an art. That suits me down to the ground.” 0 Caroline Roux is a London-based writer and editor on contemporary art, design and luxury 25

ndoor or outdoor, a swimming pool is still one of the most requested features of a luxury home—particularly given the booming post-pandemic interest in wellness. Not only is it a space for exercise and relaxation, it’s an ideal focal point for entertaining. With all its importance then, it seems strange that so much contemporary design treats the pool as a simple blue rectangle. Recently, a range of artists and designers have been bringing fresh energy to pool design, infusing it with color, pattern and immersive scenography to create a showpiece that can enhance the architectural vision of a home. “It’s an unexpected piece of art,” says Portland-based designer Alex Proba, whose colorful creativity has been applied to multiple private pool projects. “Why just have a blank pool?” Proba always dreamt of designing pools in her signature vibrant aesthetic, which blends bright hues with bold patterns, but it wasn’t until 2019 that she was approached by a client to make this a reality. In that f irst project, Marrow House, just outside Palm Springs, California, Proba transformed the pool of a desert modernist home into a joyful canvas of multicolored shapes by painting directly on the concrete basin. Inspired by the Palm Springs project, more homeowners were soon asking Proba for similar transformations and she was recently able to work on a newly built private residence in Miami, embedding the “pool-as-artwork” into the overall vision for the home. “The inside of the house is consciously designed to be very muted, so I think [the clients] thought it would be amazing to have the contrary in the garden,” Proba says. She worked with specialist manufacturer Cerámica Suro to create more than 8,000 bespoke tiles that, through shape and color, brought her sumptuous design to life. In general, Proba adds, it is better for resilience and durability to add designs to pools with tiling rather than paint. Other artists and designers have also turned to tiles to add bursts of creativity to swimming pools, making them into showstopping elements of a home or estate. Argentinian-Spanish artist Felipe Pantone used more than 130,000 Onix glass tiles to create a pinwheel-like mosaic for an inf inity pool at a minimalist coastal home in Spain. The effect, like much of Pantone’s work, is kaleidoscopic, though gently so: the shimmering colors are subtle and captivating, adding excitement to the otherwise pared-back white exterior of the house. Elsewhere, Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos designed a pool for Jupiter Artland in Scotland, a public sculpture garden in the grounds of a Jacobean 26

manor house. Hand-painted and glazed ceramic tiles create a vision of swirling colorful lines within a splash-like silhouette. Proba thinks a colorful pool can even work for those who are typically hesitant of vibrant shades. “It’s not in your bedroom,” she says—and that slight separation, allowing boldness into an outside space or dedicated pool room, can work well. Creativity doesn’t need to come through color alone either—it can also experiment with shape. At Al Suave House, a beachfront property in El Salvador by architects Cincopatasalgato and designers Pepe Cabrera Homes, the swimming pool takes the form of a winding “river,” dissecting the architecture in two. Running through the home towards the sea, this one-of-a-kind pool echoes natural forms, creating an energizing swimming experience. A geometric pool by San Francisco-based landscape architecture f irm Surfacedesign, meanwhile, brings dynamism to the garden of another Palm Springs home, its shard-like contours designed to ref lect the surrounding jagged

Everything about this one-of-a-kind oceanside home in the gated Punta Garrobo community on Mexico’s Pacific Coast epitomizes luxury living, from its central palapa—a vast open-air entertaining space with a soaring thatched canopy—to its carefully curated selection of art. But the pool is the undeniable star. Suspended 30 meters above the cliff and stretching the same distance out from the property, its glass bottom gives bathers the sensation that they are floating above the Pacific. Below sits a covered passageway dubbed the SkyWalk; above, the peaceful calm of the SkyDeck. And beyond both, only sea and the distant horizon.
mountains, as well as the roof line of the house, which is designed by Mark W. Daniels, Architect. “Most of our private clients are serious art collectors, so we’re often asked to create pools that are more sculptural in form than traditional rectangular ones, which is always exciting for us,” says James A. Lord, partner and co-founder of Surfacedesign. When pools move indoors, the canvas for creativity can extend, particularly if designers harness the surrounding architecture to create scenes of artistry and intrigue. In Le Grand Mazarin, an elegant hotel project in Paris by the Londonbased Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, a barrel-vaulted pool room is topped with a mural of curling foliage painted by local artist Jacques Merle, while a bold-striped mosaic on the pool f loor below adds dynamism. And at a home in Gstaad, Switzerland, envisaged by creative director Nachson Mimran in collaboration with Burkinabé-German architect Diébédo Francis Kéré, the stunning indoor swimming pool is designed with a rippling silhouette, topped by a breathtaking ceiling of almost 10,000 undulating bamboo tubes. Inspired by the crocodile caves of Madagascar, the indoor area was conceived “as more than a simple swimming pool,” says Mimran. “It was designed as an aquatic living room, a space for social interaction and meaningful exchange.” Creatively designed, then, a swimming pool can be more than a mere luxury amenity. It becomes a source of inspiration and excitement—and a work of art in its own right. 0 29
