MAKING DREAMS A REALITY
If I close my eyes and imagine the top item on my “gotta have it” list for a custom dream home, it would be multi-slide glass doors opening the back of the house to the outside. I can see myself curled up in a cozy chair watching the snow come down in the winter or watching spring slowly bursting to life with color.
Our featured homeowners in this issue also had a dream. Dave Schaub, founding and managing partner of Schaub Projects Architecture + Design, was put to the task of designing a home in Town & Country centered around a porch large enough for entertaining and as an extension of the kitchen and main living area. Along with the Bozich Construction team and Core Design Group, they did just that (pages 26-35).
Rustic and chic with multiple places and ample spaces for frequent entertaining was the assignment given to architect William Cover and custom builders Matthew and Nathan Markway. The homeowner, a cigar aficionado, also insisted that cigar smoking spaces be fully ventilated so the smoke would not travel anywhere else in the house (pages 18-25). Mission accomplished!
If you're planning to build a dream home sometime in the future, look no further than our special section Building Your Dream Home-The Process (pages 55-83). The industry professionals in this section can fulfill all your dreams. Take your time, study the qualities each professional brings to the table and build a team that is custom-fit to you.
It’s so fun to dream.
Enjoy this issue.

Klinghammer,
owner of Design & Detail and co-owner of
Casadenza USA, tells us everything we need to know about stone veneers.
REAL STONE REIMAGINED SURFACES
Edited by Lily Stassi
Natural stone in the form of slabs, tile and brick has been a high-valued type of functional decor for centuries. It provides a natural look to the home, while being as durable and solid as decor can be. Now considered a delicate art, adding stone to the vertical surfaces of the home can be a daunting task—with precise, time consuming and professional installation as a requirement. Casadenza stone veneers change that standard completely, providing a more accessible option with the same beautiful results!
What are stone veneers? Melinda Klinghammer brings us back to the beginning: when a worker in the original Casadenza stone factory had thrown down a rag covered in adhesive onto a slab by accident, he came back later to clean up, only to pull up a layer of stone adhered to the cloth. Thus the concept of stone veneers was born! Casadenza’s veneers are made similarly, with fiberglass or fabric as the backing to the real stone

surface. This creates a two millimeter, flexible sheet that can be easily installed on any vertical surface, without sacrificing the authenticity of the natural stone look, function and material.
Casadenza offers real indoor/outdoor stone options created using slate, quartzite, marble, sandstone and limestone, which are completely waterproof and fireproof, and can be treated as any other stone material. Designers, architects and other customers have already used these veneers to add texture to surfaces like doors, outdoor facades, backsplashes, light fixtures, fireplaces, walls, showers, ceilings, elevator interiors, planters, furniture and so, so much more—the application is unlimited. There is also the option to use clear fiberglass and backing to be used with a backlit effect. Additionally, stone veneers can be applied over nearly any existing textured surface, including tile and wood.
Though stone veneers are a great option for most surfaces, they are not meant to fully “replace” stone slabs. Surfaces like countertops, floors and other foundational areas are not meant to be replaced with veneers. Instead, veneers are meant to complement other forms of stone. Melinda works alongside architects, designers and builders, as they are among Casadenza’s most valued associates.
With Casadenza’s selection of over 80 total colors, 40 being regularly available in the St. Louis warehouse, there are so many options for using stone veneers both residentially and commercially. For more information, your local design professional can contact Melinda and her team with any questions regarding stone veneers or the installation process. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

What the Stork Left
A local artist and businesswoman resurrect a timeless artform.
Sometimes art hails from childhood memories. Carrie Arneson, founder of Cheminée Nest, helps create and install life-sized stork sculptures onto chimneys. “My company was born from a deeply personal and nostalgic place,” she says. Growing up in St. Louis, she and her parents would take Sunday drives to different ice cream parlors. “But what I remember most was the excitement of searching for something unusual along the way, storybook-like storks perched atop chimneys.” They were elegant, whimsical and somehow gave each home a sense of personality, as if the house had a story to tell, she says. Years later, she and her husband purchased a home that had once featured a family of storks on its chimney. Sadly, after the owners passed away, their children removed the storks to place on their own home. “Determined to bring back that same charming art, I spent months researching for a replacement set. I reached out to antique stores all over Europe, only to discover something surprising. No one in the world was making them anymore,” she says. “That realization sparked something in me. If they no longer existed, I would create them myself.”
Traditionally, the storks were made of aluminum or other lightweight metals. But Arneson wanted to elevate both their beauty and durability, so she chose to work with bronze, the highest quality
By Michelle Mastro Portrait Photography by Clark Thomas, additional photos courtesy of Cheminée Nest
and strongest material she could find. The next step was to find the right sculptor, and by sheer luck, she found one of the most talented artists right in her own community. “Vlad, my sculptor, has been commissioned for works displayed in zoos across the country, including the world-renowned Saint Louis Zoo,” she says. His sculptures can also be found throughout the Central West End, and his work has even been featured in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. “So, I found myself in very good hands,” she says.
To create the sculptures, Vlad Zhitomirsky first studies the storks’ anatomy, movement and posture to capture a natural, elegant feel. Then the birds are sculpted from clay into a full-size stork. “There is meticulous care given to gesture and flow so the form feels alive from every angle,” Arneson says. Once the sculpture is complete, molds are made from silicone rubber, followed by the creation of wax castings from those rubber molds. The latter process involves tweaking texture and feather detail. The pieces are then cast in bronze using the lost-wax process. Finally, the bronze is painted to achieve the natural coloration of the storks. The surface is painted with an automotive clear-coat lacquer for protection. The storks are also offered in the natural patina of bronze.
Together, she and Vlad have brought the old art form of chimney storks back to life, “combining craftsmanship, storytelling and a touch of magic that first inspired me as a child,” she says. The stork sculptures are inspired by the traditions of Northern Europe, particularly in countries like Germany, Poland, Denmark and Northern France, where storks are welcomed as honored guests, she says. “Villages often build nesting platforms on rooftops to encourage them to stay,” she says. “Their presence is widely seen as a symbol of prosperity, peace and continuity.”
I n the same way that Arneson felt as a child, clients looking to commission a nest of storks for their chimney are individuals who value generationally lasting art and meaningful tributes. “Many families are drawn to the stork designs as a way to represent their own family story, selecting arrangements that reflect their household,” says Arneson. “Others commission them to memorialize a loved one, placing a stork in a garden as a quiet lasting tribute. Ultimately, our clients share a common desire: to add something distinctive and meaningful to their home.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

A team of creative professionals shape a homeowner’s vision into a stunning Huntleigh estate for the ages.
Masterpiece
When architect William (Bill) Cover and builder Matt Markway talk about this Huntleigh home, the two design professionals repeatedly use the word “chic.”
But they also use the word “rustic” in describing the home’s design style. “A lot of people say you can’t bring ‘rustic’ and ‘chic’ together, and I’d argue this house brings them together perfectly,” says Matt, who owns Markway Construction with his brother, Nathan.
Combining extensive use of wood and stone with luxurious marble, velvet and polished brass, the home lives large yet feels cozy and intimate. Architect and builder achieved those seemingly disparate qualities by executing the homeowner’s vision for a home with multiple places and ample spaces for frequent entertaining. And in talking about the homeowner and his vision, the two design pros both use
the word “genius.”
“He had a lot of great ideas,” says William, founder of William D. Cover, Architect LLC. “We worked together for quite a while in the discussion stage on how to make his ideas happen. The house has an open feel, yet it’s not where you see everything in the house all it once.”
“And it doesn’t feel like you’re living in a large house,” Matt adds. “Bill Cover had a big role in that. There are a lot of smaller, nook-type of rooms, which is kind of old-school to achieve that coziness.”
The home’s 13 fireplaces also lend a cozy feel. “Every fireplace in that house is different,” Matt says. “Between Bill’s designs for them and the homeowner and I hand-selecting stones for some of them at rough-stone quarries, each fireplace is different and they are all one-of-a-kind.”
One of the fireplaces is a 2-story, see-through beauty dividing the
A massive, see-through fireplace of marble and brick separates the dining room from the great room.
Jade Crystal, a Brazilian quartzite, stars in the club room’s bar. The quartzite panel behind the bar is lighted, upping the glam even more in the luxurious space.
With rough-hewn timbers and textural alligatorskin panels surrounding the fireplace softened with plush velvet and leathers, the club room’s conversation area is the ultimate combination of rustic and chic, says builder Matt Markway.
An entertainer’s dream, the kitchen features double islands and considerable storage space. The sleek, black cabinetry is warmed with wood on the range hood and cabinet pulls. Reclaimed timber on the outer island adds a rustic feel to the sophisticated space.
great room from the dining room. “This is one of my favorites in the house,” says William. Above the marble surround and mantel, reclaimed wood leads the eye to the vaulted ceiling.
Most of the reclaimed wood in the home was salvaged from 19thcentury buildings in St. Louis, Matt says. Some of the beams are particularly noteworthy. “Some of the beams in the house we harvested from one of The Hill’s original theaters built in 1901,” Matt says. “To use about 30 of those in the house also pays homage to the owner’s Italian heritage, which was pretty special.”
William says windows on both sides of the great room and dining room are among the home’s distinctive features. “I call this a ‘skinny house’ because there is no formal hallway,” William says. His design configuration provides easy flow for entertaining and allows more windows in the rooms, letting natural light flood the spaces.
Just off the great room is an area both design professionals call the ‘club room.’ This main-level bar and conversation area is “one of the most unique features of the house and one I don’t normally do,” William says. Matt says this space is the ultimate combination of rustic and chic, with rough-hewn timbers and textural alligatorskin panels surrounding the fireplace. Luxurious velvets, brass and a lighted quartzite panel behind the bar add oh-so-chic elements to the space, which includes a cigar humidor.
“Nearly all the ceilings in this home are vaulted, including the garage and upper-level bedrooms,” says architect William Cover. “So, everything feels big.”
“ The homeowner and I are both cigar fanatics, so I designed it as if I was going to be smoking a lot of cigars in that house,” Matt says. “The room is completely ventilated, so the cigar smoke won’t travel anywhere else in the house. I’ve been there at parties, and it definitely works.”
The hidden gem of the home, in Matt’s opinion, is a speakeasy located in the basement. “When the owner first started talking about his idea, I imagined walking down an alley somewhere in Italy and turning to a little door that leads to a speakeasy that’s small and feels confined, which is what makes it so cool,” Matt says. Richly detailed with Venetian plaster walls, stained glass windows and religious iconography, the room was entirely the owner’s inspiration. “That’s why I call him a genius,” William says. “It’s his thinking throughout.” The room is also fully ventilated for enjoying cigars, Matt notes. “Every house we do has unique elements, but this speakeasy room is just insane.”
Thoughtfully designed and equally detailed outdoor spaces were important to the homeowner. “The property sits on a hill,” William says. “We spent a lot of time siting the home to obtain a big front yard and a large back yard. Views were very important from the outdoor areas as we sited the house, which overlooks a horse pasture and hills. Berms in the landscaping also lend privacy.”
A key feature of resort-style outdoor living is an Argentine grill, an apparatus with cranks to raise and lower the grates. “The owner already owned the stainless-steel grill, but we had to build a chimney around it,” Matt says. “You won’t see many Argentine grills like that, and his is about as special as it gets.”
Bringing this and hundreds of other ideas from a dream to a reality resulted in a joyous project for the design professionals. “This was so much fun because the client had so many great ideas,” William says. “When you walk into this house, it kind of rewards the curious. No matter where you go, you see something interesting. And everyone involved was invested in the process.”
And for Matt, the job became personal. “I feel like some things are just meant to be,” he says. “The owner and I knew of each other all the way back to high school, playing football against each other but had never met before he started thinking about this house and a mutual friend introduced us. Our ideas just jived together. Any issues that came up, we were able to solve immediately. I knew this was his dream house and that makes it a little extra special. Add that to how the owner and I have become good friends, it feels like it was just meant to be, and the house flowed from an idea in his head into a masterpiece.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

PORCH DREAMS
The lot next door inspires a St. Louis family to expand their horizons with a new, custom-built forever home designed to suit their vision for the ultimate dream porch.

The entry foyer features a curved staircase with windows above, flooding the space with natural light while preserving privacy at the front of the home. The living room's soaring proportions offer dramatic views that keep the space filled with light. Arched built-in shelving flanking the fireplace displays the owner's collectibles, and comfy seating invites relaxed conversation.
Abespoke project from the ground up, this elegant new build in St. Louis’s posh Town & Country neighborhood was fueled by the owners’ vision of a dream porch. Situated next door to their previous home— which lacked a screened-in porch—the adjacent lot had been on the couple’s wish list for nearly a decade. So, when it finally became available, they were quick to act. “The design concept for our new home was formed around a porch large enough for entertaining and as an extension of the kitchen and main living area,” says the owner, who, along with his wife, had been inspired by multiple new homes in the area. “We wanted a more traditional-style home with neutral stucco and stone, along with a dark roof, trim and spires. Many aspects are reminiscent of our previous dwelling, including high ceilings and a spacious basement for hosting large extended family gatherings.”
Completed in the fall of 2025, the sprawling 12,900-square-foot home was designed to exacting standards by architect David Schaub, founding and managing partner of Schaub Projects Architecture + Design, along with his son, CEO and partner Drew Schaub. “The owners wanted a home that was large for entertaining yet felt cozy and inviting when it was just the family getting together,” David notes. “The exterior architectural aesthetic emulates an English Cotswold style, known for its idyllic charm, interesting geometry and blend of materials —primarily stone, stucco and timber. Inside, the aesthetic melds into a more relaxed, transitional style seen in the interior detailing, fixtures and furniture selections.”
Having worked alongside the owners on a previous residence, senior interior designer Cori Dyer and associate designer Grace Gettemeier, both of Cure Design Group, brought a deep understanding of the couple’s design sensibilities into this home. “This continuity allowed us to curate an enduring composition of upholstery and case goods that feels authentic to them—timeless rather than trend-driven,” says Dyer.
“The architectural layout, thoughtfully developed by the Schaub team and the homeowners as an evolution of their previous residence, created a strong foundation for both form and function.”
Adds the owner, "We have worked with Cori since moving to St. Louis in 2017," and the minute we met her, we knew we had found someone who really cared and was incredibly passionate about her work."
Among the couple's talented team, custom home builders Kenny LeMay and Colton Bates of Bozich Construction were both instrumental in making their dream home a reality. “From the beginning, the owners had a solid vision for a timeless architectural style with natural stone, strong rooflines and spaces that feel both refined and comfortable for everyday living,” LeMay notes. “Our role was to take that vision from the architect and interior designer and make sure it was executed properly throughout the construction process.” Notes the owner, "This
being our first time building a home from the ground up, Kenny and Colton made the experience fun and relatively easy, knowing they would help us avoid mistakes."
The home's strategic floor plan includes a lower level with a fitness room enclosed with a floor-to-ceiling glass expanse that borrows light from the adjoining spaces, reserving the main window views in the house for the entertaining spaces. A casual bar station is positioned to serve the billiards area, the golf simulator and the outdoor pool patio. On the first floor, the entry foyer features a gracefully curved staircase with windows above, allowing abundant light while preserving privacy at the front of the home. Soaring ceilings in the living and dining rooms combine with sweeping windows that offer dramatic views and natural sunlight. A large pocketing sliding door unit allows the entire wall to open effortlessly onto the screened porch.
" The Schaub team walked through our old home with us and listened intently to what aspects we wanted to replicate," says the owner. "We met with them only a few times in person, but ultimately, their initial plan was so close to what we wanted that the process was quick and seamless. A fun example, we mentioned we wanted to see our kids—now teenage triplets—in the pool from the kitchen sink/window, and they delivered just that. We also have an incredible view of our back yard due to them."
Oversized stained ceiling beams define the dining area, lending a sense of delineation within the open floor plan. Inspired by a striking Janina Ellis painting, the dining area features custom rose chairs, blush detailing in the drapery trim and nuanced accents in varying shades of blush and ruby. Nyra chandeliers from Metro Lighting create an ambient glow, and an adjacent glass-enclosed dining room bar between the dual wine rooms overlooks the stone stairwell to the lower level.
T he building team paid meticulous attention to the architectural details and craftsmanship throughout the house, with standout elements including the exterior stonework, the custom entry and the outdoor living area, which showcases a vaulted ceiling and a full masonry fireplace. "Inside the home, spaces including the kitchen and the lower-level bar feature extensive millwork, cabinetry and finish coordination to ensure everything came together cleanly," notes LeMay. "Projects like this work best when everyone is aligned, and this was a great example of that. In the end, it’s a home with a lot of character, strong architectural presence and spaces designed to be
enjoyed for years to come.”
While designing interiors within grand volumes can often pose challenges in achieving intimacy, Dyer and her team approached the interior spaces with a focus on warmth and depth—layering materials, textures and tones to create a sense of comfort without compromising scale. One of the defining elements that guided both the furniture placement and overall spatial composition within the great room and dining area was the presence of oversized stained ceiling beams.
" These architectural features naturally established a sense of delineation within the open floor plan, allowing each space to
The kitchen features bar and island seating for entertaining large groups. A matte black hood above the range creates a bold focal point, adding dynamic contrast to the kitchen's classic style. A marble backsplash was selected for its subtle variation in neutral tones, harmonizing with the stone elements found throughout the home. Its geometric pattern introduces a tailored visual interest, offering a refined nod to the homeowners’ appreciation for classic design reinterpreted with a fresh, modern perspective. A hidden pantry clad in bold blue and gold features an access door directly from the garage for easy grocery transport. feel both intentional and highly functional while maintaining visual continuity," Dyer notes. "The home’s aesthetic is also deeply connected to its setting, surrounded by a secluded landscape. Intentional in drawing the eye outward while honoring the home’s verticality, we implemented custom draperies in the great room designed to frame the view and accentuate the ceiling height, creating a striking moment upon entry while reinforcing the home’s connection to its environment."
D yer’s custom color palette throughout the main living areas was thoughtfully inspired by a striking Janina Ellis artwork, which served as a foundational reference. "We carried its rich undertones through the design by layering bespoke rose dining chairs, blush detailing in the drapery trim, and nuanced accents in varying shades of blush and ruby, says the designer. "These moments of color were balanced by neutral furnishings, where warmth was introduced through materiality— most notably in the wood and leather inlay detailing within the sofas."
Fortunate enough to live in the neighborhood during construction,
The lower-level bar area is positioned to service the billiards area, the golf simulator room and the outdoor pool patio. A cozy seating area makes a prime spot for game day and casual entertaining. The guest bathroom's moody wallcovering complements earthy tones in the adjacent spaces. This curated continuity allows even the more intimate spaces of the home to feel connected to the overall design narrative. The screened porch forms the heart of the home, where the owners can relax, entertain and serve meals year-round. Its massive stone fireplace, vaulted ceiling and suspended concrete floor clad in tile blend seamlessly between the indoors and out.
the couple walked by the house nearly every day to see the progress. As their new home evolved, some of the most memorable standout features included dual climate-controlled wine rooms, a hidden pantry with garage access for groceries, and lavish outdoor spaces with extensive landscaping and lighting.
“ Without a doubt, the screened-in porch is definitely the heart of our home,” says the owner. “Expansive 10-foot pocket doors open from the dining room, revealing a massive wood-burning fireplace and outdoor kitchen, all enclosed by retractable screens. Electric ceiling-mounted heaters and a heated floor truly make the space multi-seasonal. It’s our favorite place to unwind, play games, eat family meals, and overlook our beautiful backyard and pool." See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.
A private space on the first floor, the primary bedroom was conceived as a quiet retreat featuring a deep chocolate paint hue, creating a sense of warmth and intimacy. Custom, textural window treatments add softness and depth, while the bedding remains intentionally simple—both aesthetically and practically—reflecting the homeowners' lifestyle and their two beloved dogs, who share the space. A lavish primary bathroom with a spa-like soaking tub provides the couple with their own luxurious spaces, separated by a large shower that can be entered from either side.

rowing up we bounced around a lot,” recalls Greg Meyer of Defiance, noting that his family’s moves often involved an apartment complex or a duplex.
Two of the upsides of that time in his life, Greg continues, were the apartment complex swimming pools and playing in a creek near one of the places he called home.
I t is no wonder that three years ago, when Greg and his wife Lisa decided to build their “forever” home on three acres, the finished project included both a swimming pool and a creek.
Having raised their three children in St.
Charles, they moved to Defiance following Greg’s retirement after 30 years at Boeing. They designed this once-in-a-lifetime property to work for them on a day-to-day basis but offer plenty of room for friends and family to stop by and enjoy the pool, creek and large outdoor entertainment space.
Working with Mark Trudo, owner of Blue Haven Pools, and pool designer Don Kuhn and Chris Rhodes of TRC Outdoor, the couple provided overall guidance as to what they were looking for in their outdoor project. “We wanted to use the natural shape of the land without moving around too much dirt,” says Greg.
Both in the house they designed and the outdoor space, Lisa, who continues to work as
a mechanical engineer, noted the importance of, as much as possible, keeping everything on one level. “I was looking for a nice view from the kitchen window and the family room. And by keeping the pool area on one level, it makes it convenient for entertaining and moving food and coolers around,” she explains.
The geometric design of the pool was the key piece of the landscaping puzzle and Don Kuhn was delighted to “get a green light” on some special features to incorporate into the pool and surround. Those include a 360-degree, vanishing edge spa, a swim-up bar area and a shallow tanning ledge. All are faced with multi-colored, jewel-toned mosaic
tiles. The 1,500 square-foot pool’s white marble edging and Black Eclipse PebbleSheen finish dramatically set off the sparkling, gem-like tiles.
For maximum impact, the one-of-a-kind pool design took into account the path of the sun as it shines on the back of Lisa and Greg's outdoor space. “When the sun hits the tile, it is so iridescent it’s like someone turned on a light,” Lisa says.
Once the pool design was set, it needed to be incorporated into the overall landscape “There was lots of space to work with, which sometimes can be more challenging than working with a smaller space,” explains Chris of TRC Outdoor. “We always work handin-hand with the client to understand their vision and then provide our expertise. The water feature (Greg’s creek) was added halfway through when Greg mentioned that something needed to be in that space. We built the pond and water feature on the spot.”
The stone-lined creek cascades from the
top of the patio just off the house and runs slightly downhill past the pool and culminates in a small pond accented with a stackedstone, 360-degree pedestal waterfall. A wooden foot bridge spans the stream and connects the upper patio with the yard beyond.
“Greg was really into it,” Chris continues. “It adds a nice element and with the water running it makes the large space a bit more intimate. With the large pool, the elements around it have to match so they look like they fit in the space. We always start with an overview of the property. We try to fit the landscape to the home. We went back to the plant selection from there.”
The strong architectural elements of the pool demanded that many of the 500 plants incorporated around it have their own architectural signatures. ‘Green Mountain’ boxwoods stand as pyramids. Native ‘Canaerti’ junipers, commonly called Eastern
Red Cedars, have an open, wind-swept appearance, while ‘Skyrocket’ junipers take on the shape of giant, fluffy arrows.
Tall, upright ‘Karl Foerster’ feather reed grass forms a constantly swaying, pillared wall separating the pool from the yard beyond.
‘Hummelo’ betony sends spikes of violet flowers above a base of lance-shaped green leaves. The sculptured lavender globes of allium ‘Millenium’ dot walkways.
T he plans also called for popular landscaping plants such as hydrangeas, magnolias and fruit trees. Easy-to-grow natives such as purple coneflowers, golden blackeyed Susans and lavender Stokes’ asters provide long seasons of color.
“I always like to bring the customer to the nursery so they can see what the plants actually look like,” says Chris. “They can see the sizes and be involved in the process.”
“I love gardening and I love being outside,” explains Lisa. “I wanted the feel of the garden
to look much more natural rather than strictly manicured. And, honestly, we wanted to focus on easy maintenance.”
Even though much of the garden area around the pool is fenced, landscaping selections also took into consideration plants that were deer and rabbit resistant, something that is always of concern in Defiance with many multi-acre properties where deer can roam.
“ We wanted to move out here and have some fun,” Greg says with a laugh. He has high praise for everyone who worked on their dream project including Lauren and Jon Clement of JS Clement Construction, designers and builders of their custom home.
“ We couldn’t have asked for a better crew,” he says, noting that as a kid, he never would have imagined the beautiful surroundings that he lives with everyday. “I am humbled by what has happened,” he says. “It is a true blessing.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.
ARCHITECTURAL GARDENING
Add a luxurious feature to your garden by learning the art of topiary!
By Lily Stassi
Topiary is a common style of landscaping used to complement hardscapes and architecture. The often soft curves of the hand-shaped bushes help contrast with the sharp angles of buildings and other architectural structures. While topiary is often associated with luxury landscaping, you might find it to be less intimidating than it seems.
Boxwood, Yew Bush, Japanese Holly Shrub, Privet Shrub, Arborvitae Shrub, Cherry Laurel Shrub and Dwarf Alberta Spruce Tree are all plants that are commonly used for topiary shapes. The best options are bushes and small trees that grow full with small, dense foliage all year round. This includes primarily evergreens, which are also hardy and typically can withstand, or even thrive with excessive pruning.
Some options for tackling topiary yourself include buying existing topiary, using topiary frames to trim shapes onto healthy existing bushes or starting from scratch to slowly train new plants over time. For example, you can train a bush to stay short and full at the bottom to eventually form a ball by repeatedly trimming down the height during the growing season. Eventually the bush will stop trying to grow up, and will instead put energy into growing out. Topiary frames are wire cages that you can put over mid-sized established bushes to help train them into a given shape. As limbs grow outside of the cage, you can simply trim them off and follow the lines of the cage to keep the shape.
When it comes t o freehanding your topiary shapes, there are a few general tricks that the pros use. One tip that you will commonly read about is to leave a tuft or a single branch sticking up on the top center of the bush until you are completely done pruning. That way you will always know where the natural center is, so as you significantly trim down the sides you will be less likely to make an uneven shape.
Another big reminder when trying out topiary is that you still have to keep the plant's needs in mind. One of the toughest parts of topiary is finding a place that is both visually appealing and adequate to sustain the plant’s well being. Additionally, every plant has its limits when it comes to pruning, no matter how hardy. Know when the plant’s ideal growing season is. Typically it’s June for most evergreens, and you can keep the trimming minimal through the end of summer. It's usually not a good idea to try trimming your bushes in the colder months, as they may not be able to recover.
Here are three of the most common topiary shapes to try out:
Ball: The easiest shape for beginners! Yews and boxwoods are great bushes for this.
Cone: Arborvitae or boxwood that have matured and been trained to grow tall are ideal options. Both can be trained to be either tall or short and full.
Spiral: These seem tricky, but are not as you might think. Bushes that are naturally tall like Alberta Spruce, Cypress or Privet are a good starting point. You want a plant that has a sturdy trunk. To cut a spiral, you can use a ribbon or tape wrapped around the bush as a guide to cut broad grooves down to the trunk, then remove and do finishing touches.

Living
Emily Castle combines tasteful design with at-home comfort in this lavish high-rise renovation.
Luxuriously
By Maya Brenningmeyer
Photography by Alise O’Brien
Interior Design by Castle Design
After downsizing into a “right-sized” high-rise, Emily Castle sought to combine the luxuries of a home and the conveniences of apartment living. “Working with a smaller space meant being very intentional with every square inch to maximize function and form,” says Emily, owner of Castle Design.
She began the renovation by removing a center wall in the main living area and opening up the kitchen. This open-concept design allowed room for two sitting areas, separated by a dining area, and an open peninsula-style kitchen, perfect for entertaining and easy access between spaces. With guests in mind, this redesigned layout comfortably holds sixteen people. Wanting a more transitional look for her new apartment, these structural changes were accompanied by warm tones, geometric wallpaper and clean-lined drapery hardware and cabinetry.
“Emily incorporated cherished pieces from her previous home with some new furnishings to create a warm and inviting space that wasn’t
overcrowded with furniture,” says Franny Devaney, marketing coordinator and design assistant at Castle Design. A built-in bookshelf filled with collected meaningful objects adds a personal touch to the sitting room and a hand-painted, silk Fortuny chandelier over the dining table serves as a focal point for the open living spaces.
A desig n decision that proved to be a challenge was adding a fireplace to a fully electric apartment. “Electric fireplaces are notoriously unattractive, so finding something that was visually appealing was tricky,” says Emily. The solution was a sleek, three-sided electric fireplace with added molding, which serves as a statement piece in the more casual sitting area. In front of the fireplace, three comfortable swivel chairs surround a leopard-print ottoman, providing a cozy spot for a glass of wine or additional seating for conversations from the kitchen.
Her new, luxurious Clayton escape allows Emily to enjoy the excitement of city living
without forfeiting the comforts found in a home. “On the patio, you can see the sunrise, sunset, downtown Clayton and the arch,” she says. With her ample design experience and a clear vision in mind, she was able to make a big impact in a small space. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

ARCHITECTS HOME BUILDERS
Creating your dream home
THE PROCESS
CONVERSATION, COLLABORATION, CREATIVITY
Conversation
Every custom home design begins with a conversation. Together with the client, I address parameters such as square footage, the building site, budget limitations and timing expectations. We discuss the client’s vision for their dream home, including the style of home they prefer and the number of rooms that fit their lifestyle.
Collaboration
A team approach is best. It begins with an enthusiastic client who chooses an architect, an interior designer and a contractor. The team partners together to harmonize every detail of the custom home design, both interior and exterior.
Creativity
As an architect, I consider every member of the team to be a contributor to the design process. I fit all of their ideas into a creative and responsive design. I use 3-D modeling to present interesting elevations, unique floor plans, distinctive ceilings, expansive windows, extraordinary kitchens and comfortable verandas. The 3-D modeling provides a helpful visual as the team envisions, evaluates and improves the design.
ACHIEVING CUSTOM LUXURY
Providing Value
The Srote & Co team of architects, engineers and interior designers will help you realize your dreams by creating a personalized, cohesive, comprehensive and artistic design solution within your budget and timeline. In the design phase, we provide modeling services to help visualize your project in three dimensions on your site. With modeling, you can be sure that your great room has plenty of natural light and that your pool doesn’t fall within the shadows cast by your home.
All-Inclusive Advantage
Early and often collaboration between architects and interior designers creates the most notable results. With this approach, harmony among living spaces, inside and out, is achieved, resulting in a cohesive, unified project. Our all-inclusive project approach and capabilities distinguishes Srote & Co from other architectural firms.

EXPERT DESIGN CHOICES
High-End Living
At Great Cover-Up Design, we specialize in luxury residential interiors, while also offering design services for commercial and office spaces. Our expertise lies in custom window treatments and upholstered furniture. With our own workroom, we are able to collaborate closely with the artisans who bring our ideas to life, ensuring exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail at every stage.
Classic Is Timeless
My aesthetic leans toward classic, refined traditional design. I love layering patterns, color, and texture to create spaces that feel rich, inviting, and personal. I also believe every room benefits from an element of surprise—something whimsical, unexpected, or current—to keep the design feeling fresh, youthful, and full of character. Ultimately, strong design should reflect the architecture of the home and the vision of the client, and a skilled designer can work beautifully across styles.
Your Home, Your Vision
We are always highly receptive to our clients’ ideas because, above all, it is their home. We take time to listen, understand their goals, and interpret their vision for the space. Our role is to guide them thoughtfully, point out potential challenges, narrow the options, and make the decision-making process feel clear and manageable.

Driven by DESIGN
As a place meant for both housing cars and entertaining family, this “shed” shows the creativity and versatility of a well-made living space.
By Genevieve Gerhart
This “shed,” as the homeowner calls it, has evolved into more than just a place to park and store cars; it has become a gallery of personal style and entertainment. With the help of semi-retired designer Carole Hiatt, the space has become a reflection of the life the homeowner has built. As a lifelong car enthusiast, his passion began early, shaped by growing up in the 1960s, a time when a love for well-designed, powerful cars was almost a rite of passage.
This passion carries into the design of the space itself. The result is a seamless blend of showroom and lounge, where polished surfaces and a thoughtfully designed layout create a space that feels both refined and inviting. Entertaining plays a central role here, with a large screen anchoring the room and drawing guests in from the moment they arrive. At the heart of the space is an alluring music area, characterized by the homeowner as both “artwork and chrome contemporary.” It’s a detail that captures the overall tone, sleek, luminous and intentional, while still feeling warm enough to gather in. Every element has a purpose, yet nothing feels overworked.
Having originally designed their home interiors over 20 years ago and presently in the process of resdesigning it again, Hiatt began the project with the trust and freedom to discover the right direction for the space. “There wasn’t a clear direction at first,” she explains. “We actually started with the rug.” She customized this foundational piece

specifically for the space, and it became the launching point for the entire design. This vibrant anchor in the seating area guided the palette and textures, bringing a sense of bold harmony to the room. From there, she built a scheme centered on what she calls “modern livability.” Clean lines and structured silhouettes define the furniture from KDR Designer Showrooms, while a mix of off-whites, rich navy tones and high-performance fabrics ensures the space is both functional and refined. “Everything needed to be comfortable and durable,” she says. “That’s what really brings livability into a space.”
What began as a last-resort solution for a climate-controlled car storage space has become something entirely unexpected: a destination. It’s a place where passions are on full display, where design serves both beauty and purpose and where every detail contributes to an experience that lingers long after guests leave. This stairwell needed to be almost transparent and allow light into the living area as well as being a simple, sculptural structure. Specific materials were chosen to be seamless with the warm white oak floors and glass walls on both sides of the living areas. Photography by David Papazian.

The staircase reads as a sculptural centerpiece, its floating treads and glass guardrails dissolving visual boundaries and inviting light to move effortlessly through the space. Conceived as a vertical continuation of the home’s inside-out ethos, it preserves uninterrupted sightlines while subtly linking the layered interiors to the surrounding landscape. A refined interplay of warm wood, metal and glass lends the composition a quiet elegance— both contemporary and deeply connected to nature. Photography by Benjamin Benschneider.
Ironwood Connection
This staircase features 4” thick, oversized box treads with a deep charcoal or blackened oak finish mounted to a steel mono stringer, creating a "floating" effect that emphasizes the structural purity of each step. These continuous slim profiles create a "cage" effect that provides safety without obstructing sightlines or the flow of natural light from the skylight above.

Following an integrated design approach with the architect and client, this custom floating stair system perfectly reflects the home's contemporary multigenerational design. Solid maple treads were engineered to lock into the main wall, while the spacing on the threaded rods was engineered meticulously to meet safety codes without sacrificing the open aesthetic. Baluco Homes
In this particular home, the staircase is the first element you encounter upon entry, making it a central design feature. Baluco chose a floating stair system to preserve openness and allow natural light to flow freely throughout the space. Custom white oak treads and a matching handrail were introduced to soften the contrast of the black steel structure, creating a balanced and inviting aesthetic. Photography by Clarity Northwest.
Isolina Mallon Interiors
The staircase was custom-designed as a light, sculptural element that feels almost suspended within the space, with clean glass treads that minimize visual weight. The design was driven by a desire to create openness between levels, allowing light to flow freely while maintaining a strong architectural presence. It serves as both a functional connection and a quiet focal point that elevates the entire interior.

Like a Phoenix
As one of the world’s greatest feats of architecture and epicenters for community, the development and symbolism of the Harpa makes a historical imprint on the landscape of Iceland.

Seated on the waterfront of Faxaflói Bay in downtown Reykjavík is a glorious architectural epicenter and work of art. Panoramic views of the Esjan mountain range can be seen from inside, while natural rock formations of the Icelandic coast are reflected by the shape of the glass panes on the outside. A hub for culture and community, the Harpa is a worldrenowned landmark for locals and visitors alike.
T he inspiration for the shapes in the faceted glass exterior comes from a desire to pay homage to the Icelandic landscape. Artist Ólafur Elíasson collaborated with the architects to design the iconic glass
facade to mimic the weathered interlocking hexagonal basalt columns found along Iceland’s coasts. Each facet of glass literally reflects a small piece of the surrounding landscape, drawing the visitors to admire the city’s foundation within nature.
Created to be a venue for music and conferences, Harpa has four auditoriums with flexible acoustics suited for a range of event types. Eldborg, the largest hall, seats up to 1,800 guests and is named after Iceland's renowned volcanic crater, translating to "Fire Mountain."
Har pa’s name itself is derived from the
Icelandic word 'harp,' which signifies the beginning of Spring in the old Nordic calendar. While a nod to its role as a center for music and performance, this name also represents the Harpa as a beacon of change and rebirth. In the midst of its development, the project was interrupted by the 2008 financial crisis and its effects on Iceland’s economy. Despite challenges, the team decided to continue production, and the Harpa was finished and ready to open in 2011. Now the building
serves as a reminder of perseverance and Iceland’s valiant revival—like a phoenix rising from the ashes. Today, the Harpa holds its place as a world famous landmark and Iceland’s most visited public attraction. Its story is as legendary as its beautifully steadfast appearance in one of Iceland’s biggest cities. To visitors, it receives respect and admiration, but to the people of Reykjavík, it is a fundamental aspect of the place they call home. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Transom
windows
are a way to let in more light around doorways and make use of extra wall space in rooms with high ceilings. Are they a timeless classic or just a craze that will soon go out of style?
See what the professionals have to say about the purpose and common design use of transom windows within different styles.

Susan Bower, Bower Leet Design
“Historically a transom was used above a door to allow air to flow through a space when the door below is closed. Transom windows fit with any style. No matter if it’s modern, transitional or traditional, the extra light these higher windows allow is tremendous.”
Teddy Karl, The Great Cover-Up Design “Transom windows are especially effective in rooms or homes with taller ceilings. Once you get to a nine or ten foot ceiling, the amount of blank space over a standard size window gets overwhelming, sometimes as much as three feet. A transom window over the standard double hung window will add 18-24 inches to the height of the window, creating a much taller window, filling some of the blank space and creating a nice vertical element to make the room feel larger. Add drapery side panels on a decorative rod, and you'll really accentuate the effect of the vertical line, all while letting in additional light.”
Dick Busch, Dick Busch Architects
“You definitely need a higher ceiling in order to use transom windows, and higher ceilings usually are associated with more expensive homes, so that is a consideration. Though transom windows can fit any style of home, contemporary style homes tend to just use bigger windows to get more light. Traditional style architecture uses smaller size windows, and this is where the transom is used to provide an improved look and more light.”
William D Cover, Architect LLC
“Arched transoms might be used on the main entrance of a Colonial mansion, a colonnade in an Italian villa or even in the primary room of a modern mountain lodge. I think we all intuitively understand the role a transom window plays both inside and outside the home, whether to declare importance, spark emotions or focus on a view.”
