WOMEN’S HEALTH / OCTOBER AWARENESS

Women Should Be Talking About: Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy WRITTEN BY TERRI PAIGE | CEO, MEDICAL TRANSFORMATION CENTER

Women are finally talking about their health—and it’s about time. After years of keeping quiet, we’re having more honest conversations about menopause, breast cancer, and what it really means to feel good in our own skin. With October marking both Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Menopause Awareness Month, we’re exploring the questions women need to ask, the conversations we should no longer avoid, and why speaking up about our health matters. This week, we begin with a subject that has a complicated history: hormone replacement therapy.

“Don’t neglect your hormonal health.” A magazine writer recently asked me to share five quick pieces of advice for women going through menopause. I didn’t have to think long about my first one. When we talk about menopause, we talk about nutrition and sleep, libido, hot flashes, and brain fog. What we don’t always discuss is what we can actually do about the changes we’re experiencing. Hormone therapy has become controversial, in part because of the way findings from the Women’s Health Initiative were communicated in the early 2000s. Those findings raised important safety concerns, but the risks vary by formulation, route, age, timing, and individual health history. Regulatory guidance has continued to evolve. Some people urge women to try hormones; others suggest avoiding them altogether. The most useful approach is a personalized conversation about potential benefits, risks, and alternatives.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR OPTIONS

Why Hormones Matter Think of hormones as chemical messengers carrying instructions throughout the body. They help regulate temperature, sleep, brain function, bone health, and metabolism. As menopause approaches, estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate and eventually decline. You may find yourself awake at 3 a.m., sweating through your pajamas, or struggling to remember why you walked into a room. Sound familiar? For some women, menopausal hormone therapy can relieve disruptive symptoms, particularly hot flashes and night sweats. But the decision to use it—and which approach to take—deserves thoughtful consideration.

What Does “Bioidentical” Mean? Bioidentical hormones have the same molecular structure as hormones produced by the body. Some are available as FDA-approved prescription products; others are prepared by compounding pharmacies. The term “bioidentical” does not automatically mean safer or more effective. Compounded preparations may have additional quality and dosing uncertainties. For many women, FDA-approved hormone treatments are preferred when appropriate because their safety, quality, and dosing are evaluated through a regulatory process.

So, Where Do You Begin? There is no one-size-fits-all prescription. Symptoms, medical history, risk factors, and treatment goals all matter. That’s why working with a qualified healthcare provider is so important. At Medical Transformation Center, we look at the whole picture. Not every symptom that appears during menopause is caused by hormones, and hormones alone aren’t the answer to every concern. We also consider how you’re eating, sleeping, moving, managing stress, and supporting your overall health. The goal isn’t to chase a perfect hormone number or turn back the clock. It’s to understand what is changing, make informed choices, and feel and function as well as possible in this next stage of life. Menopause may be a natural transition, but that doesn’t mean you have to navigate it without answers—or without options.
