Choosing a new sofa can be a surprisingly important and enjoyable decision, much more than you may expect at first. Initially we can think we are choosing something practical, a shape, a colour and a size that fits our room. But very quickly something else begins to happen, we start imagining how our lives will feel around it.

Mornings when the house goes quiet or those special lazy afternoon moments. Evenings when friends and family gather perhaps without quite planning to. The place where we stretch out after a long day, or tuck our feet underneath us with a book, or snuggle up to someone we love.

Our sofa becomes the place where we can take a deep breath and life settles down. And because of that, it matters enormously that it feels right. Not just when it arrives, but years later, when it has softened into the rhythm and feeling of our home and become a treasured part of our everyday lives. That’s why I love designing sofas, they hold so many memories of a life well lived.

We’ve had thousands of conversations about sofas and have brought together this compendium of information for you. It contains everything about how and where they are made and what they are made from to guidance on how to choose the right one for you. Fabrics, styles of sofa and choosing the right type of cushion as well.

Sophie comes from a design family that has, across two generations, quietly shaped the way we live in Britain. Her father shaped the modern interior. Her mother shaped the modern table. Her brothers, in their own fields, have carried the family’s instinct for design into fashion, product and hospitality. Sophie has made the home itself her territory.

Her work, under her own name, now spans more than twenty years. Furniture, sofas, ceramics, glass, textiles, kitchenware, garden and outdoor living. All designed by Sophie, made with partners she has chosen herself, and held to a standard she sets personally.

What she has brought to the family’s design language is something entirely her own. Colour. Pattern. Warmth. The feeling of a home in use. Less the architecture of the room and more the life that happens inside it. A kitchen with the kettle on, a table laid for friends, a sofa that has been properly sat in.

Comfort That Lasts

There is a particular feeling I am always trying to create when designing a sofa. It’s difficult to describe precisely, but most people recognise it instantly when they sit down.

It’s that feeling of being properly supported without noticing where the support is. A moment of softness that doesn’t collapse, of depth that welcomes you and of a gentle and endlessly reassuring comfort.

True comfort allows our body to settle naturally, without adjustment or effort. You don’t perch or shift around searching for the right position. You simply arrive, and your shoulders drop a little and yes, you can finally relax!

Every decision we make begins with that feeling and because we each have our own definition of what being really comfortable feels like, we can tailor our sofas to the type of comfort that is right for you.

It’s What’s Inside That Counts

The true character of a sofa is built from what lives inside it. We put a great deal of time and care into what’s inside our sofas as well as what they look and feel like on the outside. Your sofa’s true character lives in the strength of the frame that supports your many years of use. In the thoughtful tension of the springs that quietly carry weight again and again without tiring. In the layers of natural materials that allow the seat to breathe, soften, and adapt over time. And of course in the way the cushions hold air, warmth, and shape all at once.

These hidden elements determine whether a sofa still feels wonderful after ten years, or whether it begins to feel tired after only a short while.

I have always believed that the things you don’t see deserve the greatest care. They are, after all, what you rely on every single day.

Made Slowly Because It Should Be

There is something deeply reassuring about knowing what things are made from, and who has made them. Every one of our sofas is built by skilled craftspeople who work with patience and attention that cannot be rushed. Sustainably sourced hardwood frames are constructed carefully with dowels, screws and glue. Springs are set by hand. Upholstery is layered gradually. Cushions are filled and crafted until they feel exactly right. Nothing is hurried in our process, because comfort that lasts cannot be hurried.

We have worked with the same family-owned textile company for over 50 years. Deeply rooted in Yorkshire’s rich textile heritage, they represent the pinnacle of British milling craftsmanship. We are proud to feature their exclusive fabrics, which bring together generations of weaving expertise with a steadfast commitment to a sustainable future.

At the heart of this collection is a range of GOTS Certified Organic Cotton. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the world’s leading processing standard for organic fibres, ensuring that from seed to finished fabric, our textiles are produced with the utmost respect for the environment and the people who make them. The result is a premium, ethically sourced yarn that feels as good as it looks, beautifully crafted right here in the UK.

Every design in our collection has its own character. Coco and Barton are generous, deeply inviting and have a relaxed softness. Others like Isobel, Felix, Henrietta and Sophia are more structured. The right choice depends on what you want from your sofa and how you like to relax.

If you love to stretch out, then deeper seating like Coco and Barton will feel natural. If you prefer a more supportive profile, Felix or Isobel may suit you better. There are no rules here as finding the right sofa is such a personal choice.

OXFORD BORDER

Oxford Border cushion covers are wonderfully relaxed and cosy. They soften the overall silhouette of the sofa and give the cushions a pillow-like feeling.

Box edge cushions tend to look more structured. If you add our flat piping detail it gives them a more casual feeling.

ROUND PIPING

Our box edge cushions with round piping are very classic in style and instantly give our sofas a smarter and more formal look.

Cushion Fill Options

When it comes to building a truly exceptional sofa, true luxury isn’t just about the fabric you see; it’s about the engineering inside your sofa that you don’t see. At the heart of our Coco, Barton and Henrietta sofas lies a deep commitment to uncompromising support. While our goal is a perfect, enduring and supremely comfortable ‘sit’, the path we take to get there depends on the unique heritage of the region where it’s built.

Just like mattresses, every sofa feels different depending on what’s inside. We offer different cushion fills depending on where your sofa is made to ensure the best local materials are used.

FOAM CORE (STANDARD)

Best for a comfortable, settled-in feel with lower maintenance, offering a  soft-medium sit quality. The foam core is wrapped in a jacket of 70% duck feather and 30% goose down.

ALL-FEATHER

Best for traditional “sink-in” softness. Available as 100% duck feather or a premium 70/30 duck-and-goose down blend. These are very soft but require daily plumping.

SUSTAINABLE FOAM CORE

The same structure as our standard offering, but with an Origin™ Sustainable Foam core (made with plant-based polyols) with a medium-firm sit. Wrapped in a jacket of 70% duck feather and 30% goose down.

NATURAL LATEX CORE

Best for structure, using only natural materials. This mirrors our standard construction but replaces the foam core with natural latex.

Fabric Options

S oftly textured plain colours that pair with everything. Many are fully machine washable.

In our UK and European collections, we embrace the precision of the wire-mesh coil system, a triumph of modern upholstery engineering.

This method begins with rows of high-tempered steel coils, much like traditional springs. However, rather than tying them with twine, the top of each coil is interlaced with a flexible steel wire grid.

The Benefit: This interlocking mesh acts as a unified “bridge,” distributing your weight evenly across the entire surface area of the seat. It effectively eliminates the pressure points that cause lesser sofas to bottom out.

The Sit: The result is a consistent, reactive bounce across every inch of the cushion. The sofa retains its crisp silhouette and firm support, whether you’re sitting on the edge or lounging in the center.

The Tradition: This approach reflects a European dedication to architectural durability: a silent, “no-sag” performance built to withstand the test of time without compromising comfort.

Will it fit?

Some of our customers worry about narrow hallways and doorways and tricky access. All of our designs can be made in sections and bolted together by our delivery team to ensure they glide through even the tightest gaps.

If you have any questions relating to access, feel free to reach out to us. We have lots of experience in getting sofas into homes through all sorts of challenges with tight doorways and narrow staircases. Many of our customers will send us photos or videos of the route their sofa will need to take. Our expert delivery team will then be able to advise on the best options for you. We even have a special platform lift that can deliver up to 5 stories high for buildings where the only route in is via a window or an outside terrace in an apartment building.

Our Coco sofas have become an iconic signature design of our sofa collection. The generously proportioned cushions help make a sumptuous sofa you can sit in or lay across for hours. In fact, the wonderfully plump side cushions mean you can lay lengthways and be fully supported, perfect for lazy afternoons reading or evenings watching your favourite show.

Coco is available in a large range of sizes and different cushion and cover styles. You can even choose between different piping and leg options. All our loose covers or slip covers are easily removable simply by untying the specially made bows at the back. We also make a fully upholstered fixed cover version which works particularly well for fabrics like velvets and settings that suit a slightly more formal feeling.

For flexible living, our modular pieces allow you to build almost any configuration, whether you need a relaxed L-shape or a large U-shape for open-plan family life.

There’s something so incredibly calming about a room with white sofas. I love the serenity of them so much that they seem to make me relax before I have even sat in them. These are covered in 100% Linen from Designers Guild and the colour is Chalk. It’s machine washable which is perfect for me with the dogs jumping all over them constantly! We’ve got over 40 colours available in this linen, so if you like the look, but would prefer another colour, just take a look at our website to see our full range.

With any busy family home, my sofas get a lot of use, especially it seems, from one of my many dogs who love to spend lazy afternoons lying all over them. They run in from outside, often with very muddy paws and make the leap onto the sofas without a care in the world. All our covers are fully removable and depending on their fabric type, can be either washed or dry cleaned. I find though, that most muddy marks, if allowed to dry first, will come off with a soft brush or a light vacuum.

The Henrietta Sofa Collection

Henrietta is a classic shape originating from a faithful reproduction of a late nineteenth century sofa gifted to Sophie by her mother many years ago. Rather than reinterpreting the design, Henrietta has been recreated exactly as it would have been made at the time, using traditional upholstery techniques with patience, skill, and extraordinary attention to detail.

Henrietta has a fully sprung seat base with individual coil springs, providing deep comfort and long-term support. The back of the sofa is also fully sprung, creating a softness and responsiveness that reproduces the extraordinary attention to comfort of the original.

The upholstery is immaculate, with hand-finished piping and pleating throughout. The legs are individually hand carved in Italy, with carved ball feet that lift the sofa visually and add to the sense of refinement.

The single seat cushion is filled with a 70% feather and 30% down blend, giving a welcoming, indulgent feel while still holding its shape beautifully.

The Sophia Sofa Collection

Sophie has owned the original late eighteenth century version of our Sophia sofa for over twenty years now and has loved it from the moment she first saw it. It’s a very versatile piece as it works equally well as a more formal sofa in a hallway or drawing room, an occasional sofa in a study, or an extremely comfortable dining sofa. We have carefully reproduced this sofa to the exact proportions of the original. We have upgraded the comfort with the addition of a sprung base and high quality foam removable seat cushion. Sophia is fully customisable and comes in two sizes of sofa and an armchair as standard.

Barton sofa is a treasured design within our collection as it is similar to a favourite of Sophie’s father, Sir Terence Conran, and for several decades was a best seller in The Conran Shops around the world. Barton is a very deep and generously proportioned sofa that, depending on the size, can easily double up as a super comfortable bed.

I bought two of the original Burnham sofas over 40 years ago (I can hardly believe it, but it’s true!) and I still own and totally love them. This sofa is made in exactly the same way by the same company that used to make sofas for my Dad all those years ago. Finding a beautifully tailored sofa that offers the true comfort of a bed is a rarity, which is why we designed the Coco Sofa Bed. Available in a variety of sizes, from generous doubles to practical singles perfect for a home office, each design folds out to reveal a considered bed setup, complete with a fitted valance and your choice of a fully sprung or memory foam mattress.

To complete your bedroom, our bespoke headboards are individually handmade in the UK. Crafted to standard or custom dimensions, they come with adjustable legs for easy mounting to either the bed base or the wall.

As with our entire collection, both our sofa beds and headboards can be upholstered in any of our house fabrics or in customer’s own material (COM), and finished with your exact choice of piping, ensuring the final piece perfectly complements your design scheme.

The silhouette is a classic half-tester, with a wall-mounted corona that draws the eye upward and creates a real sense of enclosure around the bed. Just like our seating, every table is handmade by skilled craftspeople in the UK. The beautiful legs are individually carved by a talented woodturner in American Black Walnut, with bespoke options available in exquisite timbers such as English Oak, Maple, and Sycamore. While they are not designed to be used as seating, they provide the perfect refined surface for displaying beautiful books and treasured objects.

Remember that sunlight is a very powerful natural bleaching agent. All our fabrics have some in-built resistance to sunlight, but it is almost impossible to create any material that doesn’t fade if left in full sunlight for extended periods of time. Please bear this in mind when positioning your sofa if you are worried about it fading. I actually quite like the look of slightly faded fabrics, they feel more lived in to me.

It never ceases to move me that something made with such care in our workshops eventually becomes the place where so many individuals and families will gather, rest, read, laugh, or simply sit quietly at the end of a long day. That transformation, from a carefully and lovingly made object to part of a life, is the whole reason we do this.
