President’s Message Making of America
Welcome to the 2019 Cloverdale Citrus Fair
W
elcome to the 2019 Citrus Fair. This year’s theme is “Making of America.” From immigrants who traveled here in the 1800s to build railroads, to American Icons like Mickey Mouse, Neil Armstrong and Elvis Presley, leaders old and new, great inventions and inventors, all these things influenced the Making of America. There are food inventions that we consume here at the fair that we probably don’t even realize are part of America’s history. In 1880 a German immigrant served a frankfurter on a bun in the street of St. Louis and the hotdog was created. In 1897 the first cotton candy machine was built. In 1929 the corn dog was created and patented. American sporting events, fairs and festivals would not be the same without them.
There is so much to see and do at the Citrus Fair. There is something for everyone — from the new children’s area to an evening cabaret, 4-H exhibits, artwork and even citrus themed contests and exhibits. For the foodies, grab a microbrew, a glass of awardwinning wine or have a bite from one of our many vendors. For the thrill seekers, try one of the many rides. Make lasting memories with your friends and family at the Citrus Fair! There is a lot of work behind the scenes to bring you the fair. Many thanks to all the volunteers, staff, board, exhibitors, vendors and visitors. As the old saying goes, “it takes a village.” This fair couldn’t happen without you! his year marks the 127th year for the Cloverdale Citrus Fair. YOUR FAIR is one of the oldest in California and also the first fair of the season. Thank you for joining us for four days of family fun. Our talented team has planned a beautiful event full of carnival thrills, live music, spectacular citrus displays and a frontierthemed Kids Zone. I invite you to the Livestock Barns to cheer on local 4-H and FFA exhibitors and
get up close with fuzzy animals at the Friendly Farm Ag-Venture. Don’t miss the mouthwatering food, wine tasting and culinary arts on display. Try your hand at the orange juicing contest or enter your favorite orange or lemon dessert. There are so many ways to participate and enjoy your community showcase. he Cloverdale Citrus Fair Parade has been an annual tradition for decades. Thousands attend this honored community event to cheer for their favorite float, marching band or equestrian group. This year’s parade Grand Marshals are Tom and Dorothy Montoya. Tom and Dorothy came to Cloverdale in 1946. They met in high school and have been married for 68 years. The couple has been an integral part of the Cloverdale Citrus Fair for decades. Dorothy sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” on opening
night of the fair and also performed in the Cabaret show for many years. In 1963, Tom joined the Citrus Fair Board of Directors and served as Fair Manager from 1975 to 1985. He has also been a fireman serving the Cloverdale area for over 20 years and became Assistant Fire Chief until 1982. Dorothy was a Teacher’s Aide at Jefferson School until she began work as Planning Secretary for the City of Cloverdale. She retired from the City after 25 years of service. Tom and Dorothy raised their four children in Cloverdale and still annually attend the Citrus Fair.

Carnival wristbands, fair admission and season passes are on sale now at the Citrus Fair Administration office, located at 1 Citrus Fair Drive in Cloverdale. Box office hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed from noon to 1 p.m. for lunch). All major credit cards accepted. Citrus Fair Queen pageant Wine Tasting

ou won’t want to miss Friday evening’s activities at the Fair. The fun starts in the Main Citrus Fair Auditorium at 5:30 p.m. with the Lily Lemon and Oran Orange program. Twenty of the most adorable three- to five-year-old contestants will wow you with their smarts and talent. After the new Lily and Oran are crowned, stay for the Queen Scholarship Pageant. This time-honored tradition in Cloverdale is celebrating its 96th year. All former queens and their families are invited to

attend this year’s pageant. There are four young ladies participating this year: Abigail Novak, Ava Smith, Ella Black and Jannet Martinez Reyes. In order to participate, the contestants must be in school, between the ages of 16 and 19 and hold a minimum 3.0 grade point average. They are judged on poise and appearance in a judge’s interview and on stage. They will also participate in a talent segment.

E
njoy the Double Gold winners from this year’s San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition — the largest competition of wines in North America! New this year is a “Sweet Bar” where you can taste specialty desert wines and ports. The corks start popping at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 16 and Sunday, February 17. The tastings will be located in the Wine & Culinary building (Tea Room). Tasting tickets are available for purchase when you arrive at the fair and include a commemorative glass.

Live music rocks the outdoor stage at the Citrus Fair The Susan Comstock Swingtet
T
he Susan Comstock Swingtet was formed in 2003 around their collective love for the late 1940s classic pre-bebop jazz and blues styles.
With well over a century of collective professional performing experience between them, this Sonoma County, California based combo reaches back into history from a post-retro perspective, and explores classic jazz, blues, swing and Latin styles.
