También se llevó a cabo el Bitcoin 2022 en Miami, donde Jack Maller anunció la integración de Strike con Shopify y con NCR, esta última la proveedora de puntos de pago más grande del mundo. Esta integración permitirá realizar pagos a través de la plataforma de Strike, utilizando fiat o Bitcoin. Lo importante a saber es que le permitirá a las empresas cobrar por sus productos y servicios sin tener que pagar el usual 3% de comisión que tasan las tarjetas de crédito, centros de pago como Square o Pay Pal. Y lo que permite esta transacción prácticamente gratuita en la billetera de Strike es el settlement o liquidiación del pago en Bitcoin a través de la Lightning Network. ¿Y eso con qué se come? Bueno, no se come, pero va a servir para comprar la comida en su Publix más cercano, pagar su desayuno con café en el Café Latino, enviar su dinero a seres amados desde la comodidad de su celular, o quizá donar al Proyecto Vida INC un par de esos Bitcoin que compró por simple curiosidad por allá en abril del 2012 a $5 cada moneda. De modo que el mundo se mueve bajo nuevas corrientes financieras. Ya la necesidad de un banco central y un gobierno central para manejar la divisa es innecesaria. De todos modos han existido desde hace tiempo las divisas empresariales. Las acciones son otra forma del papel moneda. Menos estable. dor. Y por eso es más frágil y volátil, pero por eso también es más autónoma, porque puede crecer sin tener que esperar la aprobación de la Reserva Federal. De modo que la creación de acciones empresariales es un modo de posibilitar el crecimiento del dinero por fuera del que ya existe impreso, pues el hecho de sostener una acción que cambia de $100 a $200 en valor, eso hace que efectivamente exista la posibilidad de poner a circular $200 en efectivo como cambio por esa acción que en un principio costó $100. Similar al exuberante mercado de bienes raíces en Estados Unidos y aquí en Florida y la Florida Central, donde hoy compran una casa en $150k y mañana la están vendiendo en $500k. Bueno, por lo menos la habrán pintado. O similar a la manera como su banco producirá dinero al rate actual de 5.4% anual con las hipotecas de 30 años. Dinero que surge aparentemente de la nada, así mismo surge el dinero del Bitcoin, y ahora se va a poder utilizar como medio de liquidación de pagos. Por último, Comcast construirá 1,000 casas para alquiler y Disney 1,300, un retorno a la economía de la finca de algodón con el fin de combatir el gran cáncer actual de nuestras hermosas ciudades de Orlando y Kissimmee: el costo de vivienda. illionaire investor Mark Cuban has claimed that, in the near future, there will be a greater demand for Liberal Arts’ graduates than for those with degrees in finance, computer programming, and even engineering. Cuban’s provocative prediction assumes a conventional distinction between “Liberal Arts” and STEM (the acronym for studies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), between “soft skills” and “hard skills.” But distinctions between these categories of learning need not impose a rigid partition between them. STEM and the Liberal Arts can, in fact, be complementary and interdependent, especially when it comes to language acquisition. There is no need to pit the “Liberal Arts” against a subject like engineering. The Liberal Arts, historically, encompassed seven domains of higher education: grammar, logic, rhetoric, arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy. The well-educated individual sought to master
each of these domains in an integrative program. In other words, the complementarity of STEM and languages was already acknowledged at the dawn of university education. If we are now rediscovering their complementary nature, it is an ancient recognition which we only misplaced by stereotyping fields of knowledge into unnecessarily restrictive pigeonholes. The dichotomy of “hard skills” versus “soft skills” is not especially helpful. “Soft” can too easily connote weak, mushy, or feeble, when in reality “soft skills” equip a student to be intellectually nimble, versatile, strategically adaptable, agile. “Hard” can be misconstrued as obdurate, rigid, unchanging, utterly closed to questioning, and, yes, intensely difficult. We might usefully begin by offering alternatives to the terms themselves: for instance, “specific, defined, quantifiable skills” such as the ability to convert raw data to statistics and information, whereas soft skills are “supple, interperson-

l 27 de marzo se dieron cita las modelos del certamen de belleza Miss Mundo Latina USA en el Macy’s de Millenia Mall para desfilar la nueva colección de Michael Kors. Reinas actuales y pasadas junto a candidatas a la corona 2022 desfilaron por los pasillos de la tienda luciendo frescas prendas para esta temporada de primavera/verano. El desfile es uno de varios eventos que organiza Miss Mundo Latina USA para beneficio de sus reinas y candidatas como oportunidades para hacerse notar en el mundo de la moda y el modelaje local. Miss Mundo Latina USA es un certamen de belleza fundado en Orlando hace 18 años que busca realzar la belleza y valores de la mujer hispana en Estados Unidos, desde adolescentes hasta señoras. Los valores de resiliencia, esfuerzo y perseverancia los exhibe la actual directora de la organización, Yngrid Francisco. Yngrid es originaria de Santiago De Los Caballeros en República Dominicana donde estudió contaduría y fue asesora financiera y fiscal. Es madre de tres varones

The Education of Latinos: In Search of Unity

W
hen I grew up in Tarrytown, New York, in the late 1960’s and 1970’s, my parents belonged to the only Spanish-speaking church in town, Rock of Salvation. There I learned about God and developed an acute interest in the Bible and its foundations. Although Latinos were probably less than 5% of the population, in church there were kids from Cuba, Ecuador, Colombia, and Puerto Rico. We worshipped, played, and had good times together. We identified with each other. Those years are like a beautiful dream that you have and do not want to let go of when you wake up in the morning. For years, I have searched for that camaraderie, togetherness, and the spirit of unity I experienced in Rock of Salvation, but I have never found that ideal display of human togetherness. What did that community have in common? Was it just a core belief in the Creator of All Things? The Pastor, as we called Louie Rios, was like a second father to me. We spent many of our weekends at the Pastor’s house. I loved him and learned to love God through him. Our respect and admiration for his care and passion were unquestionable. His leadership kept us together, wellfed and supportive of each other in times of toils and tribulations. The togetherness environment was a product of his drive to keep the community unified. The greatest minority in the history of the United States has more than a few “Pastors Louie” spread out through this great land, but the macro-togetherness of the community is still in development but in-progress. Abraham Lincoln governed through very difficult times in the history of our nation—
yet was able to keep the country together. As Latinos continue to grow at unprecedented rates, it is imperative that we Latinos search and examine strategies on how to construct bridges between each other. While there are those who fear the population growth of Latinos, there are others who take advantage of the diversification of its leadership throughout the Nation and within the two major political parties to ignore, alienate and belittle its growth and undermine its socio-economic influence. Does the Latino community have the audacity to rally in one unified voice? Are there “Pastors Louie” capable of crossing the bridge from the micro to the macro with the support of larger communities outside of their geographical areas of influence? Much of who I am and what I do today has its roots in Rock of Salvation. Not so much in the religious culture but in the socio-cultural environment of what it represented. I never want to let go of the dream of a Latino community that plays together, works together, legislates together, collaborates with each other, and yes, wins elections. Les Brown, one of the world’s greatest motivational speakers, repeats this phrase every time he gets up on the podium: “it is possible, and it is necessary.” If we Latinos want to dream big politically speaking, we are going to have to let go of our egos and dare to see potential in those who profess another political alliance other than our own. The spirit of unity is in our veins and streamlines in our blood. Let’s show the world that we too can take our mother tongue all the way to the White House. It is possible! And necessary!

The soft skills are key for thriving in the midst of volatile employment prospects, versus only acquiring a technical skill that might become obsolete at any time. STEM and languages can be complementary. Students who develop a narrow specialization in one STEM area could profoundly benefit from developing skills in a second or third language. On the most apparent level, doing so would equip them to communicate aspects of their specialist, technical expertise into that target language. It encompasses the ability to translate one’s knowledge to differing audiences, in distinct contexts, and across disciplinary boundaries which in turn increases the possibilities to achieve innovative applications of that knowledge. For their part, students of languages would benefit from acquiring first-hand awareness of one or more STEM disciplines. At the very least, they should gain a working knowledge of the scientific method. I relish the “permission” that learning languages grants us to consider any and every field of human knowledge — and to consider those fields at their most fundamental core like their terminology, lingo, jargon, and their most innovative manifestations, like how to express the latest developments on the furthest frontier of a STEM field. Ultimately, language and culture are inseparable. We cannot understand one very well, if at all, in isolation from the other. The advantage of language learning, in my view, can be summed up in one word: access — access to ideas, to cultures, to the world. Creating access is fundamentally what we do when teaching languages and literatures. When we teach a language, we create access to other ways of thinking, perceiving, and expressing. When we translate, we facilitate access to other peoples, cultures, and worldviews. When we guide
Abril 2022 | | CULTURA | 15 students through a piece of literature, we render accessible the best that has been imagined across time and place. When we help heritage speakers improve their first language, we offer access to their families’ deeper past and present. Acquiring a second or third language is an eminently transferable skill which enhances our students’ career prospects, cultural literacy, and access to greater opportunities worldwide. When students acquire another language, the world is their laboratory. All their cross-language experiences comprise their experiments. To be the most well-rounded graduates possible, and thereby to increase their employability, students would do well to take advantage of the years they have during their undergraduate studies, in whatever field, to allow themselves to read and reflect on the nature of the knowledge they are gaining: How rapidly will this knowledge become dated? How might it apply to what they’ve learned in the past and what they hope to learn next? In this vein, I encourage students to stretch themselves by reading at least two books in their field each semester other than the assigned textbooks. Even while holding down one or more part-time jobs during their studies, which many undergraduates do, they are unlikely ever to have that amount of time or energy available again for highly intentional reading and reflection. More importantly, the practice of regularly reassessing the inherent limits and latitudes of one’s knowledge cultivates a versatility of mind, akin to what I’ve been discussing here in relation to language acquisition. Contrary to what the Great Oz tells the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz, achieving a diploma does not confer some kind of substitute for brains. Real fluency, in languages as in any other form of literacy, is an ongoing proficiency one must actively maintain, even and especially after a degree certifies one’s attainment in a particular field of study. Prepare to adapt. Equip yourself to innovate.
