EDITORIAL Las Gracias Saludos queridos lectores de América. Hoy celebramos el 2° aniversario de la revista con orgullo, entusiasmo, gratitud y calidez en el corazón. Este proyecto nació con la intención de resaltar el impacto positivo que somos como comunidad hispana y latina en el centro de la Florida, y ya con este número circularon 25 ediciones como testimonio de ello. También comenzamos con el deseo de descubrir eso que somos como “nuevos americanos,” una búsqueda por comprender de qué manera se manifiesta el sueño americano en nuestros paisanos, y cómo este país va forjando a nuestros hijos por caminos de nuevas oportunidades y dificultades. Así, nos sentimos bendecidos e infinitamente agradecidos por el apoyo de nuestras familias y amigos, por la fe que los anunciantes han depositado en nosotros y por el interés y retroalimentación de usted querid@ lector(a). A todos ustedes: gracias. Una luz Las historias de llegada a este país son tantas como estrellas en noches despejadas en el campo o como granos de arena en las costas de Florida. Sin embargo, hay un elemento compartido entre los que venimos de América Latina que quizá represente un impedimento para llegar a ser la mejor versión de nosotros mismos. Ese elemento es la desconfianza en el otro. Y no se me hace demasiado extraño, ya que tristemente nuestros

países cargan historias de violencia, corrupción, dictaduras, subdesarrollo y ausencia de oportunidades a pesar de ser ricos en materia prima, fauna, flora y recursos naturales. Somos una raza que ha sobrevivido a pandillas como la Mara Salvatrucha, el Comando Vermelho y el Primer Comando de la Capital. Fuerzas Policiales a las que se le va un poco la mano con la fuerza como al ESMAD, FAES y ROTAM. Guerrillas como las FARC, ELN y Sendero Luminoso. Grupos paramilitares como las Convivir, Bloque Metro y el Clan del Golfo. Las dictaduras como las de Maduro, Videla, Pinochet y Trujillo. Las Bacrim como las Águilas Negras, los Rastrojos y los Urabeños. Y consorcios del narcotráfico como el Cartel de Medellín, el Cartel de Sinaloa y el Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación. ¡Y tantos otros lastres que impiden nuestro progreso como continente! Pero aún así, aquí estamos, en busca de serenidad, paz, alegría, tranquilidad y oportunidad. En ese sentido, considero que está en nuestras manos romper con aquella desconfianza que pareciera ser parte de nuestra cultura y personalidad. Pero hay un principio americano que contrarresta aquella desconfianza. Ese principio es el beneficio de la duda. Gracias al hecho de vivir en este país debemos darnos la oportunidad de dudar sobre nuestra propia desconfianza y crear nuevas conexiones con desconocidos, ya que bajo ese principio, así como es posible que puedan hacernos daño, así mismo pueden traernos un mar de beneficios. Y es por eso que además de aprender a confiar, tenemos la tarea de preservar esa confianza y proteger

cualquier infiltración de aquella corrupción del sur y centro del continente. Es nuestro deber preservar el derecho a confiar. Sin embargo, de un tiempo acá se viene cultivando la desconfianza hacia las noticias, hacia los líderes políticos, hacia las motivaciones detrás de necesidades sociales y civiles. Se desconfía de la eficacia de la vacuna contra el COVID y se cree más rápido que la vacunación en masa es un complot para insertar nanochips de rastreo y control de la voluntad. Coloquialmente: ¡no se confía en nada ni en nadie! Pero como dijo una maestra en los tiempos remotos de la universidad, “sin confianza no hay nada.” Así, los invito a confiar en el prójimo y a recordar por qué y para qué vinimos a este país, que en esencia, fue para un futuro mejor y un presente tranquilo y feliz. Eso nos va a permitir construir una red fuerte y elástica y consolidarnos como la fuerza cultural y económica que somos en esta gran nación que nos cobija a todos, de lo contrario nuestros cimientos sucumbirán como las Champlain Towers, y nuestro discernimiento será incapaz de diferenciar al bien del mal. Condolencias A nuestros hermanos de Haití, les alargamos nuestras condolencias por el asesinato de su presidente, que peor que no saber a ciencia cierta quién fue y bajo qué motivo, es que con ello decapitaron la democracia haitiana. Sin más, que su verano sea espléndido, su trabajo sea ameno, sus negocios sean prósperos, su familia esté en armonía, y se cumpla su sueño. ¡Qué viva América!

HUman Trafficking Prevention Education for K-12 in Florida

The state of Florida ranks third in the United States as a hotspot for human trafficking after California and Texas. Within Florida, the Central Florida area ranks third behind Miami and Tampa for the most cases of human trafficking. A new Florida law aims to reduce these grim statistics by educating children about risks and sources of help.

n 2019 alone, the National Human Trafficking Hotline received 617 calls from victims and survivors of human trafficking in the state of Florida, a number that likely represents a small fraction of actual cases. Approximately 40 million people are trafficked on a global scale every year. Human trafficking is any forced or coerced labor that results in involuntary servitude, exploitation, debt bondage, or slavery. Many forms of human trafficking exist, such as labor trafficking, commercial sexual exploitation of children, sex trafficking, and child labor. Human trafficking is, in effect, modern-day slavery. Human trafficking can involve

victims of any age, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, or socio-economic status, but traffickers prey especially on the most vulnerable groups, such as undocumented workers, runaway and homeless youth, individuals involved with the child welfare system, individuals with substance abuse or addictions, and low-income individuals. On June 11, 2021, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation CB HB 519 mandating the provision of comprehensive, developmentally appropriate, and age-appropriate K-12 health education instruction in all public schools across Florida. This comprehensive health education curriculum will include instructions

that focus on the prevention of child sexual abuse, exploitation, and human trafficking. The CB/ HB519 legislation, which took effect on July 1, 2021, was sponsored by Florida Representative Clay Yarborough and Florida Senator Aaron Bean. According to the new law, the human trafficking curriculum must, at a minimum, teach children how to recognize signs of human trafficking, and how to identify resources, including national, state, and local resources. The curriculum will also include information on the prevalence and nature of human trafficking, strategies to reduce the risk of human trafficking, techniques for setting healthy boundaries and

how to safely seek assistance, and information on how traffickers exploit social media and mobile device applications. Health education in public schools has long included lessons on the dangers of alcohol, nicotine, and drugs. In this sense, the new curriculum will extend these lessons to cover how such substances can be used to lure children in or cultivate dependency. Implementing human trafficking education in our schools can create a safer environment and increase students’ chances for academic, social, and psychological success. With the passing of this law, Florida became the first state to mandate that all students in K-12 public schools receive hu-

The new legislation builds on the educational efforts that non-profit organizations across Florida have already been providing to combat human trafficking. Such organizations have been raising awareness and offering relevant educational resources to our communities. Central Florida’s very own non-profit organization, Paving the Way Foundation, focuses on providing educational resources to youth, parents, teachers, and community leaders about child trafficking and online exploitation by explaining the impact that it has on children and the actions that one can take to prevent it. Their founder and president, Jan Edwards, commented on the new law: “Paving the Way Foundation is thrilled to see that the state of Florida signed the CB/HB519 bill into a law that will help students in Florida recognize the signs of human trafficking and giving them the information and resources that they need to protect themselves against modern-day slavery.”

Since 2016, Paving the Way Foundation has educated over 14,000 youth, parents, teachers, and community leaders by visiting public schools and educating children and teachers, providing monthly online parent tech talks in English and Spanish, providing monthly awareness education, creating parenting toolkits and guides, and sharing resources on social media platforms. Human trafficking is a community-wide issue. No single group can combat it alone. We must unite as a community to protect loved ones from becoming victims of human trafficking. Prevention education about human trafficking will raise awareness about the existence of the problem and equip people to educate other community members about it. HAVANA, CUBA 11 julio – Miles de cubanos salieron a las calles para protestar contra una fuerte crisis económica que atraviesa el país caribeño debido a una reducción del turismo causada por la pandemia del coronavirus. Las protestas han sorprendido pues Cuba no es un país con tradición de protestas y el gobierno es conocido por reprimirlas. En redes sociales aparecieron videos de enfrentamientos violentos entre la polícia y los manifestantes. El presidente cubano Miguel Díaz-Canel respondió a las protestas culpando el bloqueo económico de Estados Unidos y añadiendo que las protestas eran provocadas sistemáticamente por disidentes que cumplían órdenes de EEUU. Además, invitó a los simpatizantes de su gobierno a enfrentarse con los disidentes y a defender la revolución. El cuerpo de rescatistas sólo pudo rescatar a un adolescente de 15 años de entre los escombros. También lograron rescatar a la madre, quien luego sucumbió a las heridas en el hospital. La administración del edificio había recibido en el 2018 un reporte de un ingeniero estructural que reportaba fallas severas en la estructura del edificio y recomendaba pronta atención. Dos años más tarde, la administración estaba a punto de empezar las mejoras antes del colapso.

Chaos at the Cutting-Edge: Understanding a Key Theory in Art and Science by Devin Burris In all chaos there is a cosmos, in all disorder a secret order. – Carl Jung

umans are inherently pattern-seeking, yet many of us view the universe and world as a chaotic, ever-expanding existence that can be, in a word, overwhelming. Luckily, humanity has found ways to perceive order in chaos and chaos in order. This seemingly contradictory statement is the fundamentals of Chaos Theory, which we can understand more clearly by considering science and art that make direct use of dynamic systems. Chaos Theory, as a mathematical theory, stems from the idea that the most minute change in a system can result in a very large difference in that system’s behavior. A popular formulation of this idea is the “Butterfly Effect,” which imagines that a small action like dropping a coin into the Gulf of Mexico could cause a tsunami three years later in Japan. The image is rather oversimplified and overstated, but helps us to visualize how the smallest shift in a system can have a dramatically different outcome. Realistic applications of the “Butterfly Effect” in day-to-day life are not as obvious, but scientists and artists regularly harness such patterns and potential. Chaos Theory also includes the idea that possible outcomes are non-linear, and, after initial conditions, a system will return to where it
