EDITORIAL La calidez de la Navidad en medio del creciente frío del invierno le recuerda al corazón la importancia de detenerse, contemplar el rededor y sorprenderse con el paso del tiempo. Ese ente invisible que se manifiesta en las agujas del reloj o la rítmica aparición de los dos puntos entre la hora y el minuto. Ese que surca líneas de expresión en los rostros de nuestra gente. Ese que trae un aire a sepia, a blanco y negro, y despierta los instintos de remodelación y renovación. El tiempo, ese implacable que sala las paredes de las ciudades costeras, ese que apadrina todo nacimiento y entierro, ese que se viste de festejo y lamento, ese ya dio una vuelta más al calendario. Y de ese bus de las horas sólo se baja para entrar a la tierra o esparcirse en el viento. Otra Navidad. Otro Año Nuevo. Otro Año Viejo atrás. Y algunos padecemos la locura de la distancia, esa que se llama nostalgia y a momentos lo hiela con amargura. La tristeza, por estos días, no está permitida. Pero a veces, la felicidad surge en una lágrima liberadora de tristeza, un encuentro sublime con la propia emoción. Vivirla es distinto a padecerla. Evitarla sólo resulta en volverla crónica.
Sin embargo, ese aire cálido que suena a La Fiesta de Pilito, que huele a arroz con gandule', que sabe a tamal, lechón, empanada, coquito suave o sua-a-ve. Con el cuchicheo de la familia y los amigos entre Bachata, Merengue, Salsa, Cumbia, Vallenato, Reggaetón, Chichoque, Joropo y Rancheras. Y el aroma del árbol —así sea fresh scent de pino— junto con las luces multicolores. Esa sobre carga sensorial navideña, les confieso, me hace sentir extremadamente vivo. Y la alegría de ese momento, para mí, se carga de añoranza a que nunca se vaya, a que nunca cambie ese momento. Pero aquello sólo es preparación para el cambio atraído por el nuevo año. Para comenzar el nuevo año hace falta soltar el anterior. Soltar, perdonar, agradecer y exponer los sueños a los cuatro vientos para encontrar las palabras de aliento necesarias para alimentar el coraje y la convicción de todo nuevo emprendimiento como humano, socio, profesional, negociante o miembro de familia. Aunque también considero vital construir sobre aquello que ya se comenzó. Utilizar las bases de la experiencia que sólo el tiempo da permite sobrepasar los propios límites, llevarlos a puntos donde quizá no se imaginaba antes. El peligro es caer en la trampa del estancamiento, donde ni siquiera se cuestiona la rutina, el hábito ni los procesos. El recuerdo del calen-
dario de que ya dimos otra vuelta más al sol es un campanazo para despertar los sueños, para recordar aquello de lo que estamos hechos y de lo que somos capaces. Feliz Navidad. Feliz Janucá. Feliz Año nuevo. Merry Christmas. Happy New Year. Felices Reyes. Felices nuevos comenzares. Felices continuares. Felices días para usted y su familia. Así, con este paso del tiempo y la implacabilidad de los días, le invito a la fiesta de reunirse consigo mismo y con aquellos que comparten su intimidad. Mírele bien el rostro y reconozca si tiene alguna nueva peca, línea o cana. Bese esa nueva parte del ser amado. Hágalo parte de sí. Del mismo modo, frente al espejo, mírese de lleno a los ojos, como si ese que está en el espejo lo estuviera mirando a usted a los ojos, y dígase lo que se tiene que decir. ¿Qué estoy loco? Lo invito a que haga el ejercicio y se deje sorprender por usted mismo. Por último, deseo agradecer a todos los negociantes y negocios que son parte de este proyecto. Accent Modification: A Necessary Good or a Masking of the Cultures We Carry?
English is a living language, meaning it is a language in current transformation. Given the mass adoption of English by foreign language speakers, the inclusion both of new vocabulary and new accents is practically inevitable. However, for those interested in approximating their accentuation to the local's music, speech therapy is the solution.

As a child of Cuban immigrants to the United States, seeing the difficulties of moving to a foreign country has profoundly impacted my life and career plans. One of the biggest challenges was not precisely attributed to monetary hardship, although that was a struggle. Rather, as for many immigrants, the language barrier became the most significant challenge for my parents. Many immigrants begin to learn English, at least enough to get by, but the obstacles do not stop with mastering grammar and vocabulary. A steep challenge comes with making themselves understood to others in their new homeland, often due to retaining a “thick” or “heavy” accent from their native language. Upon arriving in this country, both my mother and father began
their studies of American English while working full-time jobs. By acquiring English as a second language in their twenties, they naturally formed what is perceived as an unconventional accent in America. Although they have lived the last three decades here in Florida, most people they have met throughout the years do not possess a full-blown “Southern” accent but more of a general or neutral American English accent. In truth, everyone has an accent they acquire over time. Recent research shows babies in the womb are already learning the patterns of intonation, vowels, and rhythms of their mother’s language and those nearby. Our different accents are due to differing ways of pronouncing the sounds, known as phonemes, that make up words.

Depending on the regions where a person lives, these accents may be deemed “normal,” while others may draw attention to the speaker. When people have an unconventional way of accentuating, they may seek to minimize their accents, approximating local phonemes so as to be better understood. Accent modification is one of many services that speech-language pathologists provide as a means of helping people to produce more intelligible speech. Although popular perceptions may associate these therapists predominantly with helping children overcome speech disorders such as stuttering or lisping, they can also assist adults with modifying accents to ensure effective communication between themselves and their communities. In one-to-one sessions, the client and therapist focus on what listeners may hear and com-

prehend. Clients learn efficient ways to imitate the common sounds and phonology of the intended language, which may make them feel as if they are actors rehearsing for a play or film. In fact, many renowned voice actors work with speech-language therapists to study differences in phonology and tongue placement to imitate particular accents for a role. Accent modification, which can be as simple as mastering three nasal vowels or the “-er” phoneme, can increase clients’ levels of confidence in their speech tremendously. Modifying a person’s natural accent carries, inevitably, some controversial baggage. After all, what is a standard American English accent? “Foreign” accents can connote a lack of belonging or a deficiency of education. When people seek accent modification services, they may be driven to do so by having en-

My parents and my wider family report that they often felt inferior to those who constantly asked them to repeat themselves due to a lack of understanding. My mother, who still struggles to navigate her Cuban-inflected accent, says, “I know that when I speak, I won’t sound like your typical American with the standard accent from the movies I watched as a teenager. Even now, people still ask me to repeat what I’m saying multiple times because they don’t understand me.” This is a recurring phenomenon in different settings, especially in the workplace where much of her routine involves speaking to others. She notes that this is an issue her friends face as well since many acquired English around the same age. “I know I’m not inferior to a native English speaker, but it sure does feel like it when I am constantly being asked to repeat myself. I learned another language as a fully-grown adult, and the likelihood of others doing that decreases as we age.” As for the prospect of pursuing accent modification, she says, “I’ve
learned my own ways to get by, but I’m sure accent modification would have made my life easier by avoiding feeling ashamed. Accent or not, I got to where I am now because of my efforts. It’s part of me and my culture in a way.” She jokes that perhaps a speech therapist could help her with the difference between “has” and “have,” or how to pronounce that troublesome “Fort Lauderdale” and “Santa Claus.” One’s origin plays an integral part in one’s cultural identity. It is important to note that accent modification services do not diminish a person’s individuality. Rather, the purpose of such services is to enhance confidence in overall communication if they have noticed others struggling to understand their speech in everyday activities. For more information, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (https://www.asha.org/) shares many features on accent modification and first steps to acquire services. Finally, it's important to note accent modification does not seek to erase immigrants’ origins but rather equips them with a greater awareness and control of how they speak. This can empower them to tell their own stories, to speak up for others, and to express their journeys more clearly in their new homeland.

UN FRIDA U$34,9M Orgullo Mexicano por Mateo Blanco
“Diego y yo”, un autorretrato de Frida Kahlo, se convirtió en la obra más cara de un artista latinoamericano jamás vendida en una subasta, alcanzando 34,9 millones de dólares en Nueva York . Eduardo Costantini, coleccionista de arte y fundador del Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires mejor conocido como Malba, compró “Diego y yo” para su colección privada. Ya en 1995 había comprado “Autorretrato con chango y loro” de Kahlo, que hoy tiene el Malba. Ese mismo retrato, “Diego y yo” hace parte de mi colección de arte. Se trata de un negativo original de la primera fotografía que tomó Frida Kahlo de su obra en 1949. De acuerdo a Penta del grupo Barron’s, el récord previo lo sostenía Diego Rivera “Los Rivales”, pieza terminada en 1931 y vendida en mayo del 2018 por U$9,8 millones en Christie’s. La pintura de Kahlo es un autorretrato de la artista con lágrimas en los ojos, que tiene al pintor mexicano Diego Rivera —con el que estuvo casada dos veces— dibujado pequeño sobre su entrecejo, con un tercer ojo. La Obra muestra la relación íntima de ella con Diego. Frida y Diego tuvieron una relación muy tortuosa y la volcó en sus pinturas. Esa angustia que muestra en “Diego y yo” se su-
pone que es por el affaire de Rivera con el ícono del cine mexicano, María Félix. Sin embargo, en boca de María Félix, eso no fue más que una Amistad. “Diego y yo” fue el último autorretrato de busto que plasmó la pintora mexicana antes de su muerte, en 1954. El día de la subasta fue emocionante para mí. Se valoró con fuerza el talento de una mujer con la cual tengo una gran connexión, pues fue maestra de mi gran amigo, el maestro Arturo Estrada, miembro del grupo Los Fridos creado por Frida Kahlo. Frida, aunque no la conocí, siempre ha estado presente en mi entorno artistico. Fue, además, amiga de mi maestra Lola Vélez, una gran muralista Colombiana muy cercana al Estudio de Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo. El éxito de Frida Kahlo no es un milagro, es un conjunto de acciones de varios personajes que con sus actos y estrategias llevaron a la cima a esta artista. Por lo tanto, celebro con júbilo esta noticia, pues es momento para invertir en Arte Latino Americano. Pero eso es tema para la próxima edición, donde compartiré con ustedes información sobre cómo invertir en arte, por qué y en quién invertir. Lanzamiento del Libro "Birth of a Rican" El 2 de diciembre, el docente Manuel Hernández presentó su libro “Birth of a Rican” en el Osceola High school. Su ex-colega la Dra. Maria V. Torrey hizo la portada y el prólogo. La presentación del libro
se dio como parte de una actividad del club Coming to America, que consiste de estudiantes hispanoparlantes que están viviendo un proceso de adaptación a la vida en Estados Unidos. El Club busca rescatar las
voces emergentes del estudiantado que algunas veces puede verse cohibida por la brecha idiomática. Por eso en el club se aprecia la capacidad de hablar español y se cultiva la capacidad de comunicar en inglés.
Hasta el momento Coming to America ha producido 4 libros con las voces estudiantiles y ahora quiere hacer una revista. Para dicho propósito, parte de las ventas del libro “Birth of a Rican” financiarán la publi-

El evento contó con rifas, fondos para momentos fotográficos y un Mickey y Minnie para los niños, quienes pudieron gozar de un reverso gigante y de los dulces de los expositores. América Magazine congratulates the winners of the 2021 Don Quijote Awards, hosted by Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando (HCCMO) & Prospera USA. The event was held at Epcot's World Showcase Pavilion and was sponsored by Disney (The Walt Disney Company) and Wells Fargo, among others. Chief Orlando Rolón won the Excellence Award and challenged all businesses present to examine their executive leadership to ensure Hispanics are well represented as leaders. Paul Gamache TV won the Lifetime Achievement award for 38 years in local media. He thanked his family and colleagues for their support during his long career and left these words of encouragement for the younger generation of professionals in our community: "Always infuse passion and heart into everything you do. Always care for others. Always have a positive attitude. Always work hard. Always embrace your culture and your language, el Español, and always love unconditionally, because that is what will stay with you forever."

Almodovar, P.E., Deputy Director and County Engineer at Orange County Public Works, won Professional of the Year. Diana made local history when, in 2018, she was appointed as the first female County Engineer in Orange County’s 150 years. “I’m proud to be a Latina and I’m proud to be a public servant in this community,” she said on stage. Camila Pachón Roldán of Capella Immigration Law won Hispanic Business of the Year of five years or less. She thanked her parents' sacrifice of coming to the United States the major driver in her success as a professional and entrepreneur in this country. Father and son duo, Rick and Christopher Castillo from Castillo Engineering won Hispanic Business of the Year of five years or more. With tearful eyes and his voice breaking, Rick thanked his son, Christopher, for being not only his

A Moment in History Part 5 The Legacy of César Chávez by Manuel Hernández
“Our ability to reach unity is the beauty of diversity” (Ghandi). Why was Ghandi so immersed into finding common ground, and reaching out to those on the other side? Ghandi’s life was filled with painstaking racial discrimination, but he discovered the power of communal work. As a result, unity paved the way for his activism, and social reform. The key in the battle was unity. Although Latinos continue to impress numerically, I still perceive a lack of understanding in its formidable weapon: “beauty of diversity”. While Ghandi was working to transform India politically, socially, and economically, César Chávez learned from him and focused his efforts on transforming the working conditions of farm workers in California and other places where migrant workers settled without the legal documentation to make a living. Chavez’s ability to find common ground and speak with a violent opposition earned him the respect of Dr. Martin Luther King, the Kennedy
brothers and other social reformers of his time. Chavez’s plea for the people went beyond racial lines. It was a battle for dignity and honor. His principles silenced internal opposition. Dr. Martin Luther King’s uproar resonated a generation later with the election of Barack Obama as President in 2008. African Americans celebrated, and we celebrated with them. Latinos supported President Obama once and even a second term for a resonant eight years in the White House. But what about us? When will we have the guts and determination to learn from Chavez’s legacy? Why can’t we be “friends” with those who speak and think differently? In times like these, it is imperative to bury our political concerns and reiterate our beauty. Venezuela had seven Ms. Universe’s. Puerto Rico gave birth to one of the greatest baseball players of all time: Roberto Clemente. Colombia’s Gabriel García Márquez was probably one of the greatest writers of all
time. Why not put all that excellence together in 2022? How about 2024? We stand united in the defense of our “mother tongue” and historically are the most difficult minority to let go of its language. Let’s use that same mother-tongue love to stand together, and ultimately decide for a superb candidate rather than vote exclusively for a color and a political party. There is no doubt that America is more divided than ever. The two political giants, the great cable tv networks and mega social networks are at war. This may be the historical opportunity for Latinos to give an example of decency, camaraderie, and unity. In writing, unity and cohesion are best integrated when the ideas flow smoothly and come together as one whole product. Now is the time for Latinos to follow their unique values as a culture and take advantage of our strengths and work towards the cohesion and unity that Chávez so gracefully represented.
