Honors Our 2020 Graduates
Logan Brake, Emma Jacobs and Grace Callaway Logan Brake is graduating Eastside High School. In his high school career, he was in the Spanish Club for two years, and the TedEd Club. He was on the Baseball team playing third base from 8th-11th grade. In addition to these he completed the Marketing Pathway.
Emma Jacobs is graduating from the University of the South; Sewanee, TN. She is graduating with honors with a degree in Environmental Sustainability and a double minor in History and Latin. Emma was active in the University Choir and was a Sustainability Fellow for three years. During this time, she created a Green Office Program for the entire University.
Grace Callaway is graduating from Georgia College and State University. Graduating with honors with a BA in Art with a concentration in Museum Studies and a minor in Theater. During her college career Grace worked closely with the Film Club in addition to, working on her Film Certificate with the Georgia Film Academy.

CLASS OF 2020 A Tale of Resilience Mason Wittner
The Class of 2020 will likely be thought of as one of the most resilient groups of seniors in recent memory. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, this year’s senior class had the final semester of their high school careers stripped from them. They were unable to spend their final weeks walking the halls of their respective schools alongside their classmates. They were unable to close out their spring athletics seasons and compete for region and state titles. They were unable to walk across a stage in May and receive their high school diplomas while being showered in praise from those in attendance. The ongoing pandemic took the world as they knew it and turned it on its head, just months before they were set to embark on a bright new adventure. And yet, in the eyes of their teachers and administrators, the Class of 2020 has persevered. As the days spent outside the classroom turned into weeks and later developed into months, it would’ve been easy for these students to hang their heads. They could’ve felt sorry for themselves and decided to mentally check out for the virtual edition of their last round of high school academics. Instead, administrators from around the area have shared nothing but high praise for the way their student bodies have responded in the face of adversity.

“These circumstances don’t define who they are,” Eastside High School principal Jeff Cher said of his senior class. “They are amazing young men and women who, when they came in as ninth graders, I challenged to achieve the best they could. They have overcome every single challenge that I have put before them, and I certainly know they’ll overcome this.” Dr. Shannon Buff, who’s in her third year as principal at Newton High School, shared similar sentiments about what she’s witnessed from her senior class. “They’ve been really resilient. That’s the best thing I can say about them, and they really have been,” Dr. Buff said. “I think we as adults probably struggled with it more than they have, to be quite honest. They’re sad and they’re disappointed, but they’ve been able to kind of move forward and know that everybody’s trying to do the best they can to celebrate them.” The Class of 2020 has continued to keep up with their online assignments. They’ve remained engaged with one another through social media platforms, continually sharing words of encouragement through tweets, Instagram stories and Facebook posts. Many students have expressed feelings of sorrow in the wake of these unorthodox circumstances, but their administrators believe this had no hinderance on their academic performance. “The truth is these kids have had to grow up faster than kids should at this age. Our kids here have done it with
lots of grace and they’ve persevered, and I think it will make them better in the long run,” said Tim Armstrong, principal of Social Circle High School. “Watching them trying to finish up over the last nine weeks, they’ve done a great job. I’m very proud of them.” As Alcovy High School principal Dr. Kristopher Williams was quick to point out, the Class of 2020 didn’t just do the bare minimum to meet expectations. They continued about their business with a smile on their faces and a desire to continue bettering themselves despite the hand they were dealt. “Your heart does go out to these students and their families,” Dr. Kristopher Williams said. “These students, they could’ve became angry, despondent, upset with the situation, but they did not. They continued to handle everything with class and dignity. I definitely could not have been more proud of this class.” This year’s seniors are special. They’ve etched themselves into history as the class who had everything taken from them their last semester, but still rose above their unfortunate circumstances. Perhaps the most valuable lesson they learned was one that could’ve never been taught inside a classroom. Life is an unpredictable journey filled with peaks and valleys, and you don’t always get to choose where you’ll end up. What you can control, however, is how you respond. The Class of 2020 chose to answer with resilience.
